This episode was recorded in front of a live studio audience on the banks of the Mississippi River in Keokuk, Iowa. In this episode, we answer questions from the litners that are on the Standard of Truth Tour in Missouri and Illinois. Question: An LDS press was destroyed in Independence, but it was a big deal when the City of Nauvoo destroyed the Nauvoo Expositor. Other than LDS bias why was it different or was it different? Question: How can we start a Mormon Reparations movement? Question: Gerrit, Disney has their top 10 villains. Who would you say are the top 10 villains of the restoration? I'm guessing Doctor Philastus Hurlbut, John C Bennett, Gov Boggs, Thomas Marsh, George Hinkle, and Thomas Sharp would make the list. How does that align with your list? Who else should be added? Today we had the incredible opportunity to talk to Matthew Godfrey about a unique character in LDS church history, John C Bennett. Matthew shares John's fascinating story and explains how he fits in church history. Matthew is a historian for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (otherwise known as the Mormon Church). He has done extensive research for the Joseph Smith Papers and continues to work with the church in sharing church history. John C Bennett had a variety of professional interests throughout his life including a medical background and military background. He reached out to Joseph Smith to express his disappointment in how Joseph had been treated. He then meets Joseph and joins the young LDS Church. He quickly gains popularity in the church, becoming the mayor in Nauvoo, and an assistant president to the First Presidency of the Church. However, soon John finds himself in the midst of controversy.
The team discusses controversial allegations of sexual impropriety against Joseph Smith and John C. Bennett in Nauvoo, the existence of the Danites as a violent vigilante group, Bennett's subsequent exposes of Mormonism after his excommunication, the succession crisis and various Mormon offshoots after Joseph Smith's death, and questions around the authenticity of Mormon truth claims such as the golden plates. There is debate around the accuracy of some historical sources, as well as acknowledgment that early Mormonism contained cult-like elements such as polygamy and unquestioning loyalty tests. Gerrit and Richard continue discussing John C. Bennett's role in claiming Joseph Smith ordered Porter Rockwell to murder Boggs and put up a reward for it. They examine what Joseph did say about Boggs and then discuss the California settlement of both the Saints and Boggs and the likely origin of the rumored prophecy...Gerrit can't help himself and mentions the Compromise of 1850 and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and goes on a tangent about a scheme to make a Mega Giant California when it first became a state. In this two-part conversation, Richard and Gerrit discuss a listener's inquiry about a rumored Joseph Smith prophecy about the death and grave of former Missouri Governor Lilburn Boggs, of Extermination Order infamy. Gerrit discusses some of the background surrounding Boggs and of course gets angry about what happened in Missouri. He gets more angry when they start talking about John C. Bennett. As Joseph Smith quietly practiced plural marriage in Nauvoo in 1842 and 43, all was not well. Three people in particular complicated things for Joseph. The first was John C. Bennett, a highly gifted convert who's meteoric rise to civic and church leadership in Nauvoo abruptly ended when he was exposed for his secret practice of “spiritual wifery,” which was nothing more or less than illicit serial adultery. Bennett's defamatory opposition to Joseph after his excommunication was fierce and directly impacted Joseph's own private practice of plural marriage. Surprisingly, Joseph's own brother and member of the First Presidency, Hyrum Smith, was openly opposed to polygamy during this time and sought to use his influence to put down any hint of it in Nauvoo, all the while suspecting that his own brother and others of the apostles may be living it. Yet amidst his opposition, in one key moment, everything changed for Hyrum. Joseph's wife Emma Smith was the third and most important person in his life to complicate his practice of plural marriage. Although she sought for a time to embrace it, Emma struggled mightily with this practice on many levels—to the point that it almost ended their marriage. In this episode of Church History Matters we discuss each of these three individuals—John C. Bennett, Hyrum, and Emma Smith—and how each factored in to the complexities and troubles of living plural marriage in Nauvoo. Dr. Bennett joins us in third chair discussing his song suggestion: Batzorig Vaanchig's rendition of the traditional Mongolian song Chinggis Khaanii Magtaal (Ode to Genghis Khan/In Praise of Genghis Khan). During our discussion of the great Khan's life, we pontificate on the idea of ensuring your own immortality (it may involve conquering most of the world and fathering hundreds of children by multiple women), what the "retvrn to tradition" gang might be getting wrong, and the finer points of khoomei (Mongolian/Tuvan throat singing). While the song lyrics are relatively minimal historically speaking, this may be our most cerebral and dense episode yet. Enjoy! Much is said and thought of John C. Bennett from Nauvoo Mormon history, but what do the documents actually say? Today we go through a brief deep dive into this fascinating figure. He became a close friend and then personal greatest enemy of Joseph Smith throughout a complicated sequence of events. Bennett is most renowned for his 1842 expose, The History of the Saints, which he wrote after his abrupt removal from all church, government, and military appointments. We deal with the charge that he was providing abortions and what the implications which follow actually mean. After that we review Reign of Fire, a Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey dragon movie with surprisingly deep interpretations. We wrap with some happy news from the Lego company to help children undergoing medical procedures. Mark your calendars! Evangelical Steven Pynakker reviews the definitive biography of one of the most infamous characters to inhabit the orbit of Joseph Smith. In this review you'll find out that Bennett had a fascinating life and history both before and after his encounter(s) with the Restoration. From being an early advocate of the health benefits of tomatoes, developing two new breeds of chickens, and founding diploma mills, you'll find a much more complex person than what you've been taught. Here is a link to the book: https://www.amazon.com/Saintly-Scoundrel-Life-Times-Bennett/dp/0252022823
In the summer of 1842, Joseph Smith was busy. He implemented the endowment, entered plural marriages, dealt with John C. Bennett’s fallout, and went into hiding from an attempted extradition. BYU’s Jordan Watkins is an editor of the Joseph Smith Papers publication covering this pivotal time. In this episode, we learn learn about events from this demanding period of Joseph’s life, but also how those events gave rise to his revelations, showing the beauty of an eternal that encompasses the temporal.

On this episode, the Fosters, the Higbees, and the Laws in May of 1844 continue at the forefront of our examination. This week we focus in on the Higbee brothers, Chauncey and Francis (Frank). The Higbee families joined the church in 1832 during the Kirtland era before moving to Jackson County, Missouri to join the Mormon settlement there. They were forcefully removed from the county with the rest of the Mormons in late 1833 through early 1834. Francis helps with the Kirtland Temple construction then returns to Missouri to rejoin the rest of the Higbee families. When Joseph Smith, Sidney Rigdon, and the Quorum of Apostles are removed from the Kirtland leadership, Francis and Chauncey join their families in defending the Mormon settlements during the 1838 Missouri-Mormon conflict. Francis Higbee even joins the Danites (Joseph’s underground enforcement squad). Francis and two of his uncles are arraigned in the November Court of Inquiry when the Mormon settlements surrendered. The Higbees were released and helped the Mormons resettle in Illinois after the Extermination Order by Governor Lilburn Boggs. Francis and Chauncey both team up with John C. Bennett during his public defection and expose publishing efforts. Both Francis and Chauncey would remain on the blacklist of dissenters from that time forward. Both deal with public character assassination by the prophet and his cronies. Both deal with the fallout of polygamy and the clandestine leadership keeping it under wraps. Both join hands with the Fosters and Laws in May of 1844. On this episode, Nauvoo has a lot of secrets to hide. We talk about Orrin Porter Rockwell and his trip to Missouri in May 1842. We discuss his “confrontation” with Governor Lilburn Boggs, of which Boggs was none the wiser until he awoke days later with multiple gunshot wounds. Joseph and his BFFs escape/bribe the guards to get out of jail and run off to a malaria-ridden swamp in Illinois. He heads to D.C. to take the saint's grievances to Pres. Van Buren, saving the passengers of a runaway coach along the way. Van Buren doesn't help them, so they start the trek back to Illinois. John C. Bennett enters the timeline by becoming Joseph's unofficial second in command. He's a politician/lobbyest whose sway is critical in the creation of the city of Nauvoo. That Nauvoo charter grants Joseph some broad powers that will come in quite handy in the future (but we're not there yet). It's the episode where free will doesn't exist!!! On this episode, Jo goes on a smear campaign against the POTUS, Martin Van Buren. Jo claims his dog is more fit to run the country than Van Buren, likely giving him the confidence and social clout to run for President in the 1844 election. After that, Jo introduces baptisms for the dead and the waters of the Mississippi in Commerce were continually troubled by people getting dunked for loved ones. We wrap up the historical portion with discussing just how much John C. Bennett influenced Jo throughout his short time with the Saints. After that we bring on an old friend, Kaitlyn McKenna, to see how she’s been doing for the past two years since we last spoke after she was kicked out of her parent’s house and was forced to start a gofundme campaign for basic living essentials. [paypal-donation] The RLDS Church was founded on the claim that Joseph Smith never practiced polygamy. Even on her death bed, Emma Smith made the startling claim to some that Joseph never practiced polygamy. Conservative bloggers such as Rock Waterman (see his post here) and even Denver Snuffer have made the claim that Joseph Smith was a monogamist. However, current RLDS Church prophet/president Stephen Veazey has made the claim that historical records show that Joseph Smith did practice polygamy. What does Dr. Brian Hales believe about these allegations about monogamy and Joseph Smith? I have an article that I have been pitching to different people to publish on the denials. To be quite honest with you, there are at least two other denials that clearly were not senility, were clearly not specially phrased questions where Emma just comes right out and they're fairly well documented, said “Joseph did not practice polygamy.” How do I deal with that? I don't know. I do not have a good explanation. I think Emma was an amazing woman. I look forward to meeting her someday. You know in our theology that's a possibility. She had the worst row to hoe of all the polygamist wives in my view. She did remarkably well. She stumbled, but I believe there's plenty of forgiveness on these things for her, but I honestly don't know how she was able to say these things that she said. Hopefully these will be published. I've put them together, I just haven't got them published yet. It's pretty clear that she just denied it flat out. I don't know how she made that work for her, but they're there. I also asked Brian how he deals with the idea that Joseph practiced only monogamy. Brian: You know it's interesting, Rick, that you would bring that up because by the time this interview is aired, The Interpreter {a Mormon history journal} will have published a very long article that I have written where I don't just give evidence that Joseph did it, but I actually attack the arguments by, I mention Rock Waterman, I mention the Prices, and then Denver Snuffer who is in my view just the latest false prophet. Remember I started looking at Mormon fundamentalism and I documented and wrote articles on men or came as great leaders who came for this reason or that reason and then they just fall by the wayside. There's a number of these that I talk about in my book. I think Denver is just the latest in all of this type of a pattern. For those who have questions, the easiest way probably to detect Denver is he said Joseph didn't practice polygamy, and then just look at the evidence. I outline it all here. It is true that most of the evidence that Joseph practiced plural marriage is from late sources, but not all of it. The Nauvoo Expositor states right in there that Joseph Smith had a revelation. It was read to the high council. We've got testimonials from William Law and Jane Law saying that Joseph was teaching polygamy. These are contemporaneous. There are entries in William Clayton's journal. John C. Bennett clearly had heard some rumors. I don't know that he was ever in confidence of Joseph with it. But to say that it's all old is not true. There are some very important contemporaneous sources. What do you think of the arguments Brian makes against monogamy? (As a reminder, this is part 10 of our conversation with Brian. Check out parts 1-9 to learn the facts behind polygamy.) The Temple Lot Case is one of the most important sources for polygamy documents. The RLDS Church wanted ownership of the temple lot in Independence, Missouri but another group, sometimes known as the Temple Lot Church owned the property. The LDS Church assisted assisted the Temple Lot Church and had women testify about their polygamist relationships with Joseph Smith in order to counteract the RLDS claims that they were the true successors to Joseph Smith. Dr. Brian Hales describes this important court testimony. This is a continuation of our previous conversation about young bride Helen Mar Kimball, as Brian discusses her relation to the Temple Lot case. If we didn't have the RLDS Church saying Joseph wasn't a polygamist, we wouldn't have the 1869 affidavits, we wouldn't have the 1877 collection by Andrew Jensen, and we wouldn't have the additional information from the Temple Lot Case. Together those three are 75% of what we know, and it's scary for researchers on polygamy to think about what we would know about Nauvoo polygamy if the RLDS Church had not taken the stance that they did. It's really scary. You'd have John C. Bennett. You'd have William Law, and you would not know even a fraction of what we think we know about it today.
