It's a tall order. “The task of writing is to take a character and put him up a tree and start throwing rocks at him,” notes novelist, screenwriter, comic book writer, and television showrunner J. Michael Straczynski. The two-time Hugo Award-winning author is perhaps best known as the creator of the television series “Babylon 5”, and as the screenwriter for the 2008 Oscar-nominated Clint Eastwood film “Changeling.” He is also the author of the Superman: Earth One” trilogy of graphic novels, and for many years he was the writer for Marvel Comics' “Thor,” “Fantastic Four,” and “The Amazing Spider-Man” series, as well as for DC's “Superman,” “Wonder Woman,” and “Before Watchmen” titles.     These days, Joe is spending most of his time throwing rocks on behalf of his late friend Harlan Ellison, the legendary writer of speculative fiction, who is having a bit of a moment more than six years after his death. As the executor of the Harlan Ellison estate, Joe has been the driving force behind the re-release of the first two installments of Ellison's landmark story collections Dangerous Visions and Again, Dangerous Visions, which the author had always imagined as a trilogy. Now, thanks to Joe Straczynski's dedication, the long-awaited third installment of “the most significant and controversial Science Fiction collections of our time,” will finally see the light of day with the publication of The Last Dangerous Visions, due from Blackstone Publishing in October 2024. “Harlan was my friend, and I have an obligation to him to get his work where it needs to be, in front of a mainstream audience,” Joe reflects on a year that has also seen the publication of a new collection of Ellison's stories (Greatest Hits) as well as a novel of his own (The Glass Box).  Join us as we talk with J. Michael Straczynski on his influences as a writer, on the art and craft of storytelling in all its many forms, and on what it has meant to him to be able to breathe new life into the work of an artist hailed by the Los Angeles Times as “a twentieth-century Lewis Carroll.” Learn more about  J. We've discussed Mormon endtimes on numerous episodes, but this time we will also discuss some results. Mormonism breeds dangerous men; men who believe the end of the world is coming. Bruce R. McConkie loved the idea of the endtimes. He wrote about it so much that we decided to cover what Mormon Doctrine says are the signs of the endtimes. Then, because we know you just can't get enough of McCrankie, Shannon will give the 5th segment of Millennial Messiah which, surprise surprise, is all about the death and destruction that is going to happen in the second coming. Then we actually will end the episode leaving you with a feeling that the world isn't completely on fire with some really cool news about green infrastructure. So fasten your seatbelts. Finally, the long-awaited deep-dive of Paul H. Dunn! Dunn was a General Authority of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a consummate liar. He tweaked or fabricated dozens of stories with a spiritual bend which caused Mormons to feel the spirit that what he was saying was true. He also committed financial fraud by cashing in on his high church rank and grandiose public personality. When all this came to light, shelves of believing Mormons came crashing down worldwide, and he was sent to a pasture up north by the apostles. He was, however, successfully insulated by church leadership from any legal repercussions. After that we review Plan 10 From Outer Space, a 90s Mormon sci-fi flick! In 1978, five young men went to a basketball game a few towns over from their own, and never returned home. Months later, the emaciated and frozen remains of four of them were found scattered in the woods some 50 miles from the route they would have been driving. The whereabouts of the fifth man (Gary Mathias) remains unknown, as do the “how" and “why" of his friends' fate. This week, Hannah tells Katy the story of the Yuba County Five, an unsolved mystery that still haunts those involved to this day. The girls discuss the ways mental health diagnoses have changed in the past 40 years, their own theories on how and why The Boys (as they were known by their family) ended up in the perilous situation that ultimately ended their lives, and what, if anything, could have been done to prevent it. This one is both tragic and mysterious, and if you want a more detailed dive into what happened, check out the 7-part podcast, Yuba County Five, by Mopac Audio and Glassbox: https://open.spotify.com/show/2oslJQ3GClTWyiE6gk1s4fSources: https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/1978/07/06/5-boys-who-never-come-back/f8b30b11-baeb-4351-89f3-26456a76a4fb/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuba_County_Fivehttps://podcasts.apple.com/lu/podcast/the-disappearance-of-the-yuba-county-five/id278981407?i=1000415551785

We examine the fascinating era of the 1970s feminist Mormon history studies. We focus on the central figure of Claudia Bushman and her push to build a non-existent world within Mormon studies. A group of east-coast women scholars began publishing controversial history in the form of Mormon Sisters and the resulting Exponent II quarterly journal. The official church historian, Leonard J. Arrington, encouraged and assisted where he could, but the General Authorities, especially Ezra Taft Benson, Mark E. Petersen, and Boyd K. Packer, couldn't handle the prospect of women scholars publishing in academic journals about Mormon women's issues. The retaliation, blacklisting, and PR fights quickly followed Claudia Bushman, Marueen Ursenbach Beecher, and Laurel Thatcher Ulrich as they worked to advance the burgeoning field. Hey guess what. It's Gen Con time. AGAIN! It keeps showing up every six months. Go figure. In this episode we talk about what slipped through the cracks of this General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. And yes, the timestamp is accurate. It's a long listen, but hearing us dissect #GenCON is much, much, MUCH better than actually watching the 10 hours for yourself, right? This episode has a general content warning as there are talks involving some damaging concepts including death of a child, suicide, and, of course,  LGBTQ+ issues because those mormon leaders just won't stop being bigots. So fasten your seatbelts. It's going to be a bumpy night!   Show notes:  Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/GlassBoxPod  Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/glassboxpodcast Twitter: https://twitter.com/GlassBoxPod  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glassboxpodcast/  Merch store: https://exmomerch.creator-spring.com/ Be sure to use discount code GLASSBOX for a tithing off your order!!!

It's time to break into our next long-form review of Mormon literature; Bruce R. McConkie's Millennial Messiah! We get an idea for the purpose and objective of the book as well as McCrankie's pet issues right off the bat. He speaks of the heresies integral to false prophecy and warns of the various movements and political groups are anti-Christ. But before we crack open the spine of this tome, our main segment is a brief deep-dive into Mormon prophecy. What is it? From where does it come? How reliable are Mormon prophecies and can they be trusted? And the greatest question with which some believers may wrestle, what's Joseph Smith's batting average? We round out the show with some happy news about government diversity in Portugal!   Show notes:  Mormon Prophecy: https://www.fairlatterdaysaints.org/archive/publications/the-truth-about-the-god-makers/ic https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_prophecies_of_Joseph_Smith https://www.josephsmithpapers.org/paper-summary/journal-march-september-1838/41 https://www.josephsmithpapers.org/paper-summary/journal-1839/2#historical-intro#josephsmithpapers https://abn.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/history/topics/prophecies-of-joseph-smith?lang=eng&adobe_mc https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tariff_of_1833 https://www.jstor.org/stable/43200790 https://mit.irr.org/joseph-smith-william-miller-and-prophetic-speculation   MOGP:  Book of Common Prayer: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Common_Prayer  Edward VI: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_VI  Indulgences: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indulgence  Protestant Reformation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reformation    Happy News:  https://www.portugal.com/news/portuguese-government-announced-the-majority-of-ministers-are-women-for-the-first-time-ever/   Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/GlassBoxPod  Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/glassboxpodcast Twitter: https://twitter.com/GlassBoxPod  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glassboxpodcast/  Merch store: https://exmomerch.creator-spring.com/ Be sure to use discount code GLASSBOX for a tithing off your order!!!   iTunes reviews: We need more!
