New research by PhD student Colby Townsend reveals striking connections between The Book of Mormon and Adam Clarke's Bible Commentary, a widely used biblical resource in Joseph Smith's time.

How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge? If you turn at my reproof, behold, I will pour out my Spirit to you.Proverbs 1:20-23“The voice of wisdom is everywhere heard: In public, in private, and in the streets. Common sense, universal experience, and the law of justice written on the human heart, all testify against evil and wrong of every kind.”Adam ClarkeAs we head into the political election of a lifetime, one must wonder whatever happened to wisdom. How is it that so many Americans have abandoned common sense and universal truths in favor of evil ideas that can only lead to destruction? Thank God the voice of wisdom is still crying in the streets! We hope you enjoy Pastor Ray's timely message, “Wisdom Cries Aloud in the Streets”.
We have Adam Clarke on to have a chat about the grain market. We cover off on grain quality, Chinese trade, local trade, ISCC and sustainability and a whole lot more.
Proverbs 14:14 Adam Clarke in his famous commentary, asks the question: “Who is the backslider?”, he then answers it in three points: 1. The man who once walked in the ways of religion, but has withdrawn from them. 2. The man who once fought manfully against the world, the devil, and the flesh; but has retreated from the battle, or joined the enemy. 3. The man who once belonged to the congregation of the saints, but is now removed from them, and is set down in the synagogue of Satan” This sermon is a warning against drifting and an exhortation to recover again the ground lost in our Christian walk.

Thou, whom He has redeemed by HIs blood - thou, whom He has upheld by His power, and fed by His providence - thou, into whose wounded soul He has poured the balm of pardoning mercy - thou, whom He has adopted into the heavenly family - thou, whom He has comforted in so many tribulations and adversities - thou, whose multiplied offenses He has freely and fully pardoned; wilt thou go away?"

At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to him, “Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you.” And he said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I finish my course. Nevertheless, I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day following, for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.' O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! Behold, your house is forsaken. And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!'” (Luke 13:31-35) Not all Pharisees hated Jesus. Obviously, there were some such as Nicodemus, and even within the Sanhedrin with people like Joseph of Arimathea, who later helped bury Jesus. Here we see that some Pharisees who were upright came to warn Jesus and sought to protect Him. But Jesus' answer is rather interesting. Tell That Fox Jesus referred to Herod as a fox. Now this may seem like a major slight in which we'd wonder, how can Jesus do that while not sinning. William Barclay, a 20th century theologian, explained this well when he said, “To the Jew the fox was a symbol of three things. First it was regarded as the slyest of animals. Second, it was regarded as the most destructive of animals. Third, it was the symbol of a worthless and insignificant man.” (Barclay) So yes, this address of calling Herod a fox is brutal, but it's honest and making the people aware that Herod was sly, destructive, and insignificant. However, to call someone insignificant seems again, not like a God thing, right? But what Jesus was stating is that even in all of Herod's power and desire to kill Jesus, Herod was completely insignificant when it came to Jesus fulfilling His ministry and mission of the cross, which would happen according to the Father's timing. This becomes clearer in the rest of what Jesus said – that He casts out demons, cures people, and that in the third day will finish His course. Jesus came to do the work of the Father and He was not only doing it, but nothing Herod could have done could have thwarted it; therefore Herod was insignificant. Jerusalem's Prophets Jesus gets a bit ironic here as He says, “for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem”. We see in the very next sentence that Jerusalem is “the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it!” Here Jesus is using irony to emphasize the point. The point isn't that Jerusalem is just awful because it has killed their prophets though. The point is in Jesus' next sentence, “How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!” Under the Wing Jesus is heartbroken at their unwillingness to let God be the good Father He is over them and the protection and comfort He would have provided them the way a hen gathers her brood under her wings. The prophets sent to them spoke the very words of God and instead of heeding their words, they stoned them. That was a direct reflection of their heart, not towards the prophets themselves, but it was a reflection of their hearts towards God. The way Jesus states “How often would I have gathered your children” is indicative that God desired to protect and comfort His people often even though the people weren't responsive to allow it. Adam Clarke, an 18th century pastor and bible scholar, gave great insight to this as well when he said, “When the hen sees a beast of prey coming, she makes a noise to assemble her chickens, that she may cover them with her wings from the danger. The Roman eagle is about to fall upon the Jewish state — nothing can prevent this but their conversion to God through Christ — Jesus cries throughout the land, publishing the gospel of reconciliation — they would not assemble, and the Roman eagle came and destroyed them.” (Clarke) You Will Not See Me The last thing Jesus said in this section is “Behold, your house is forsaken. And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!'” Now this is two-fold because He indeed came back to Jerusalem after this where we read about the triumphal entry in Luke 19: As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” (Luke 19:37-38) That would be seeing Him with their physical eyes. With any spiritual eyes, they would not see Him until the prophecy of the end times comes to fulfillment where they will look upon Him and acknowledge Him as Messiah, which they didn't do when He first came. And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn. On that day the mourning in Jerusalem will be as great…(Zechariah 12:10-11a) Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen. (Revelation 1:7) It's important to realize that Jesus prefaced this with “your house is forsaken” and fully understand what He is saying here. There are false theologies that go around that Israel has been replaced because Jesus said things like “your house is forsaken” to them, but that's not what He is saying here. That word for forsake means to let go, let be, to give up a thing. Jesus is saying that He tried to call them to Himself, and they weren't willing to gather, so He is letting them be and therefore their house is empty without Him. Jesus is not abandoning Israel; He is simply leaving them to what they want in that moment but the time will come when they look upon Him whom they pierced and weep over not acknowledging Him sooner. A Christ Follower's Application With all this being directed at Israel, what can we as followers of Jesus take away from this? We can glean several things – No matter how powerful, nothing can thwart the sovereignty of God Our sins are great, and yet God is willing to reconcile us to Himself and cover us with His wing We need to have ears to hear when God calls us and be willing to respond to Him Although we may be struck down at times, God never actually leaves or forsakes us; He always has good plans for us Be encouraged today by God's immense love for you and at the same time be challenged to tune into the voice of God more deeply, responding in obedience and worship to a great and mighty God who will never leave or forsake you!

Thursday, 11 January 2024 “and provide mounts to set Paul on, and bring him safely to Felix the governor.” Acts 23:24 A more literal translation would be, “And provide beasts, that, having set Paul upon, they might bring safely unto Felix the governor” (CG). In the previous verse, the commander directed that soldiers, horsemen, and spearmen be readied to go to Caesarea at the third hour of the night. Now, his words continue, saying, “And provide beasts.” The word kténos is used. It simply means a beast, as in a beast of burden. It could be a horse, a donkey, or a camel. Being with the Romans, it was probably either a horse or a donkey. Paul would not have to walk the long trek to Caesarea because it next says, “that, having set Paul upon, they might bring safely unto Felix the governor.” Being on an animal and surrounded by almost five hundred soldiers, there would be very little chance any harm would come to him. Once safely out of the local area, many of the soldiers would return to Jerusalem, but those continuing on would guarantee his safe passage and delivery to Felix. As for this governor named Felix, a short description from Adam Clarke will suffice – “This Felix was a freed man of the Emperor Claudius, and brother of Pallas, chief favourite of the emperor. Tacitus calls him Antonius Felix; and gives us to understand that he governed with all the authority of a king, and the baseness and insolence of a quondam slave. ... He had, according to Suetonius, in his life of Claudius, chap. 28, three queens to his wives; that is, he was married thrice, and each time to the daughter or niece of a king. Drusilla, the sister of Agrippa, was his wife at this time; see Acts 24:24. He was an unrighteous governor; a base, mercenary, and bad man: see Acts 24:2.” Life application: Imagine how safe Paul was as he was carried out of Jerusalem on his way to Caesarea. It is certain that no harm would come to him. And more, he had the assurance of the Lord Himself that he would be taken to Rome to testify concerning the risen Christ. With such security, and with such a guarantee from the mouth of the Lord, he would have had no concerns at all as he traveled along the road out of Jerusalem. We all have trials and troubles in this life, some of them are greater than we might be able to bear at the moment. And some of them will lead to our death or the death of those we love. But this is not the end of the story for those who know Jesus. We may have uncertainty about the immediate prospects in our lives but let us be as certain as Paul was that we will make it to our final destination. The Lord has spoken, and the promise is sure – “‘Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. 4 And where I go you know, and the way you know.' 5 Thomas said to Him, ‘Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?' 6 Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.'” John 14:1-6 This is a promise from Jesus Christ, the risen Lord and the eternal God. Yes, trials and troubles are the hallmark of our walk in this fallen world, but safe passage to the New Jerusalem is guaranteed. Even if the ride getting there is a bit bumpy, we shall arrive safely and be granted an eternal inheritance that will outshine any temporary darkness and difficulty we now face. Be confident in this. O God, we are grateful to You for the assurance we possess because of the wonderful and exalted work of Jesus Christ our Lord. Though our trials are many and this earthly life is often difficult, we are confident that what has been promised shall be delivered. Thank You, O God, for this wonderful surety we can hold onto. Jimmy Snuka was THE ONLY superstar to be removed from the WWE Hall of Fame. This was the result of an incident that took place of May 10th of 1983. Superfly had arrived in Pennsylvania to pre record a wrestling event. His 'on the road' girlfriend Nancy Argentino, would stay behind at the motel and wait for Jimmy to return. After arriving home after the event, according to Jimmy, he tried to rouse Nancy, with no luck. he then noticed a yellow fluid coming from her nose and mouth. He would tell responding officers, that he and Nancy had been horsing around before he had left that day, and accidentally, Nancy had hit her head, but had seemed fine immediately after the incident. He would follow paramedics after they had intubated Nancy and were trying to get her to the hospital to save her life, at the hospital, his story would change, and he would say now that Nancy had done something to upset his, and he tried to remove himself from a tense situation and he had gently pushed her, and that was how she had sustained the injury.Sadly, at about 2:30am, Nancy would succumb to her injuries. After Nancys autopsy, there was red flags everywhere. But, nothing lowers a red flag quicker than Vince McMahon and a large briefcase full of money. In 2013, a reporter named Adam Clarke would release a story about the 1983 tragedy, for the 30th anniversary. And this would shine a brand new light on Superfly. This is the story of WWE superstar Jimmy Superfly Snuka.Support the showIf you're interested in receiving bonus episodes, early release dates, an everything scary sticker and ‘thank you' as well as a shout out on our regular feed! In his Bible translation project did Joseph Smith plagiarize the work of a prominent British scholar named Adam Clarke? Or, if you don't want to call it plagiarism, did Joseph Smith “borrow” or appropriate phrases and ideas from Adam Clarke's Bible commentary (without attribution) which are found in our JST footnotes today? This is the question at the heart of the biggest modern controversy surrounding Joseph Smith's Bible Translation. In this episode of Church History Matters, we trace the origins of this controversy back to a series of interviews and articles by BYU Professor Thomas Wayment and his research assistant Hailey Wilson-Lemmon beginning in 2017 and culminating in a book chapter published in 2020. And as we are inclined to do with all things related to Joseph Smith's Bible translation, we'll look to expert Kent Jackson for his take on the claims of Wayment and Wilson-Lemmon in an article he published as a critique and refutation of their research. We examine the second of John's three letters as we near the end of this current sermon series, Letters to Humanity. Adam Clarke said, “This epistle is more remarkable for the spirit of Christian love which it breathes than for anything else.” It speaks of walking in truth and the importance of guarding the truth that we have in Christ.
We'll discuss the controversy of Thomas Wayment's recent paper about the Joseph Smith Translation & Adam Clarke. What do people get wrong? We'll also discuss some New Testament scholarship. Did Joseph Smith and/or other translators mistranslate Paul? Did Paul start Christianity? Dr Thomas Wayment has a new edition and new publisher of is translation of the New Testament! Saturday, 18 March 2023 So that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord, Even all the Gentiles who are called by My name, Says the Lord who does all these things.' Acts 15:17 In the previous verse, James began his citation of the prophet Amos. That now continues with, “So that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord.” The Hebrew of this verse from Amos reads, “That they may possess the remnant of Edom.” However, the Greek translation reads as James has cited. The name of Edom and the word “man” are very similar in the Hebrew. Thus, the Septuagint translators seem to have understood the extended meaning of what lay ahead. Further, this word translated as “mankind” is a plural noun, men. There is no reason for the NKJV to have changed it from the earlier rendering of the KJV except, most likely, political correctness. The singular is to be rejected. In the Greek, the masculine stands for all. Despite this, the meaning seems clear. The previous portion of the quote began with, “After these things.” James has shown that there is a time when Israel will again be exalted under Davidic rule, meaning under Jesus their Messiah. That will occur after certain events take place. He now says what those events will be. Until the time when that comes about, there is an opportunity for the rest of mankind to seek the Lord. Amos had talked about the punishment of Israel for rejecting the Lord leading up to the restoration of Israel. Hence, the restoration comes after the time of punishment. But during that timeframe, the redemptive plan won't just be put on hold, waiting for Israel to get its act together. Rather, while Israel is being punished according to the Mosaic Law which they agreed to remain under when they rejected Jesus, the nations (the rest of mankind) would be seeking the Lord. That is next further explained with the words, “Even all the Gentiles.” It is the same word as in Acts 15:14, ethnos. Unlike in that verse, there is an article before the word. Rather than “nations” as was argued to be the better rendering there, this is rightly translated as “the Gentiles.” The reason is that even if there are Christian nations, it is not nations that are being called through the gospel, but individuals. As nations have come and gone, the salvation of the Gentiles has remained unaffected. When the Lord calls for His people, they will rise, even if the nations they belonged to disappeared millennia earlier. James next continues the quote from Amos saying that it is these saved believers of this dispensation “who are called by My name.” The words are reminiscent of James 2:7 where he uses the same Greek word – “Do they not blaspheme that noble name by which you are called?” Though James wrote to the Jews of the church, they are still members of the church. Being called by the name of the Lord means that the name of the Lord rests upon the person. Those who call upon the name of the Lord through faith become those who are called by the Lord's name. With this understood, James finishes the citation with, “Says the Lord who does all these things.” It is the Lord who called Israel and covenanted with them. It is the Lord who faithfully blessed Israel when they sought Him out. It is the Lord who punished Israel according to the covenant made between them. It is the Lord who sent Jesus to initiate a New Covenant. It is the Lord who, when rejected by Israel, fulfilled the words of the prophecy concerning Israel's second exile and punishment. It is the Lord who called out a people for Himself from the Gentiles during Israel's time of having rejected Jesus. It is the Lord who will once again return Israel to His favor and exalt them when they call upon the name of the Lord. Everything comes back to the wisdom and hand of the Lord. As noted in the previous commentary, this must be the interpretation of these verses. The words of the citation from Amos cannot be referring to the replacement of Israel by the church. This is absolutely certain from the continued words of Amos 9, which close out the book of Amos – “‘Behold, the days are coming,' says the Lord, ‘When the plowman shall overtake the reaper, And the treader of grapes him who sows seed; The mountains shall drip with sweet wine, And all the hills shall flow with it. 14 I will bring back the captives of My people Israel; They shall build the waste cities and inhabit them; They shall plant vineyards and drink wine from them; They shall also make gardens and eat fruit from them. 15 I will plant them in their land, And no longer shall they be pulled up From the land I have given them,' Says the Lord your God.” Amos 9:13-15 In saying that He will bring back the captives of Israel (of which Amos 9:1-10 are the focus), it means Israel the people and none other. There is no provision for exile for the people of the church. There is no land grant bestowed upon the church. Israel, the nation, will be replanted in Israel the land. And more, this cannot be referring to their first exile. This is because of the final verse of the book of Amos – “I will plant them in their land. And no longer shall they be pulled up.” There is no time in history that this has occurred. After the first exile, they were pulled up a second time, something prophesied by Isaiah even before the first exile – “It shall come to pass in that day That the Lord shall set His hand again the second time To recover the remnant of His people who are left, From Assyria and Egypt, From Pathros and Cush, From Elam and Shinar, From Hamath and the islands of the sea.” Isaiah 11:11 Life application: Replacement theology is a failed system of biblical interpretation because it does not take into consideration the whole counsel of God. Nor does it rightly divide the word. But even during the time when Israel was deep in her second exile, at a time when there was seemingly no possibility that the nation would ever again be restored, John Gill (1697-1771) said the following concerning Amos 9:15 – “...by which it appears that this is a prophecy of things yet to come; since the Jews, upon their return to their own land after the Babylonish captivity, were pulled up again, and rooted out of it by the Romans, and remain so to this day; but, when they shall return again, they will never more be removed from it; and of this they may he assured; because it is the land the Lord has, "given" them, and it shall not be taken away from them any more; and, because he will now appear to be the ‘Lord their God.'” Likewise, Adam Clarke (1762-1832) says of this verse – “Most certainly this prophecy has never yet been fulfilled. They were pulled out by the Assyrian captivity, and by that of Babylon. Many were planted in again, and again pulled out by the Roman conquest and captivity, and were never since planted in, but are now scattered among all the nations of the earth. I conclude, as the word of God cannot fail, and this has not yet been fulfilled, it therefore follows that it will and must be fulfilled to the fullness of its spirit and intention. And this is established by the conclusion: ‘Saith the Lord thy God.' He is Jehovah, and cannot fail; he is Thy God, and will do it. He can do it, because he is Jehovah; and he will do it, because he is Thy God. Amen.” Despite the wave of poor theology concerning the reestablishment of Israel, these voices cried out, “The Bible is to be taken literally! God has spoken and His word cannot fail.” Now, what will you proclaim? The men who could not have foreseen the reestablishment of Israel with their earthly eyes, wholly trusted the Lord, focusing their spiritually attuned eyes on what He had spoken. Today, even today after the reestablishment of Israel to their land – exactly as the Lord prophesied would take place – much of the church refuses to accept that what was written has been fulfilled. They must receive their judgment for their lack of discernment and faith concerning God's word. But they will remain saved despite their wholly tainted theology. This is the greatness of God who saves us despite ourselves. Whether you like the Jewish people or not, something much greater is at stake in the world today. That something is the integrity of the word of God and the promise of God that He would never fully reject His people, Israel. He will bring them into the New Covenant. Have faith in this. Don't be silly but be steadfast in your acceptance of the truth of God's precious word. Lord God, how could it be that You would reject Israel when You covenanted with them? If that were so, You could also reject us when we fail You. Our salvation would be up to us. But no! You have spoken and it is done. Thank You for the wonderful assurance we possess in Christ. Thank You, O God. Amen.
Adam Clarke is the President of 1 Bold Step where he provides marketing strategy and marketing operations support.Adam has over 15 years of experiance in marketing and has worked in Sales his entire career, with a focus of changing marketing from overhead to value add. Here are a few of the topics we'll discuss on this episode of The Consulting Trap: How membership-driven business models can inform marketing strategy. Different approaches to acquiring clients. How to track the different commitments you have. How to nurture referral relationships. The idea of paying for referrals. When to refer prospects back out to other people. Indicators that someone wants to scale. Yes, marketing should always be on.”
We have Adam Clarke, a trade grain broker and high school friend of Matt, on the podcast this week. In this discussion, we chat about the impact of wet weather on grain, how the market is performing and try and get some dirt on Matt from his high school days.
The well-being of the employees is the key to everything that an organisation stands for. Well-being of staff covers both physical and psychological health. We don't function well without both. This week, in a special crossover episode, Sheila has been talking to Adam Clarke of Praxis42 about the benefits of investing in well-being, building skills, being a manager, communication, comfort zones, and much more.
Luke 6:27-36 In his classic commentary on the Bible, Adam Clarke writes concerning mercy: “A merciful or compassionate man easily forgets injuries; pardons them without being solicited; and does not permit repeated returns of ingratitude to deter him from doing good, even to the unthankful and the unholy”. Can I ask you? Are you merciful? Do you extend mercy towards those who wrong you? I understand all about justice and principles, “...they've done this to me and so why should I show them kindness in return?” Dear soul, allow mercy to have its work in you, and you'll soon be extending the hand of grace!! Hear the words of Jesus Christ, “Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful” (Lk. 6:36).

Jeffrey Mosher welcomes back Adam Clarke, President & Jennifer Jurgens CEO/Founding Partner, co-owners of 1 Bold Step, Grand Rapids, MI, to MBN. The pair shared their story when they were awardees with Michigan Celebrates Small Business. As their company continues to grow, they've looked for a new location to work from. Recently, SBAM, the City of Grand Rapids, SBA, and Consumers Credit Union came together to assist 1 Bold Step, a West Michigan Marketing Agency, in purchasing their new headquarters in the North Monroe District. The company had to navigate environmental tests as well as the SBA loan process - no small feat, and they couldn't have done it without the state and local support they received.
Abraham was now very old, and the LORD had blessed him in every way. (Shouldn't the story be over? Why are we still talking about Abe?) 2 He said to the senior servant in his household, the one in charge of all that he had, “Put your hand under my thigh. (Senior servant? Most experienced and most trusted…and the thigh?...Adam Clarke.) 3 I want you to swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living, 4 but will go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac.”
Seek First Matthew 6:25-34 (NIV) – [25] “Therefore I tell you, do not WORRY about your life… [33] But SEEK FIRST his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Luke 10:38-42 (NIV) – [38] As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. [39] She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. [40] But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” [41] “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are WORRIED and upset about many things, [42] but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” The Cure for Worry 1. Welcome Him in. “Welcomed” (hupedexato) means kindly received; she received him in a friendly manner, under her roof; and entertained him hospitably.” (Adam Clarke's Commentary) Luke 19:6 (NIV) – [6] Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy. “Consider Martha’s situation. She received Jesus into her home and then neglected Him as she prepared an elaborate meal that He did not need! Certainly, a meal was in order, but what we do with Christ is far more important than what we do for Christ.” (Wiersbe Bible Commentary) 2. Sit at His feet. “Mary of Bethany is seen three times in the gospel record, and on each occasion, she is in the same place: at the feet of Jesus. She sat at His feet and listened to His Word (Lk 10:39), fell at His feet and shared her woe (Jn 11:32), and came to His feet and poured out her worship (Jn 12:3).” (Wiersbe Bible Commentary) Psalms 46:10 (NIV) – [10] “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalms 46:10 (NAS) – [10] “Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Matthew 6:6 (NJKV) – [6] But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. “It is vitally important that we spend time ‘at the feet of Jesus’ every single day, letting Him share His Word with us. The most important part of the Christian life is the part that only God sees. Unless we meet Christ personally and privately each day, we will soon end up like Martha: busy but not blessed. (Weirsbe Bible Commentary) 3. Listen to His Word. Isaiah 48:18 (NLT) – [18] Oh, that you had listened to my commands! Then you would have had peace flowing like a gentle river and righteousness rolling over you like waves in the sea. “While the Master does appreciate all that we undertake for Him, He knows that our first need is to sit at His feet and learn His will; then in our tasks we shall be calm and peaceful and kindly, and at last our service may attain the perfectness of that of Mary when in a later scene she poured upon the feet of Jesus the ointment, the perfume of which still fills the world.” (Charles R. Erdman) 4. One thing is needed. Psalms 27:4 (NIV) – [4] One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple. “Jesus was telling Martha that the ‘one thing’ that Mary had ‘chosen’ was more important than the ‘many things’ Martha had chosen to do. The implication was that Martha should listen more and labor less. The ‘good part’ that Mary would not lose, was the blessing that comes to those who pay attention to the teachings of Jesus with an attitude of dependence on Him. (Thomas Constable’s Notes) 5. Choose the better. “Our Lord prizes our affection above our service. Service may be tainted with pride and self-importance. Occupation with Himself is the one thing needful, that good part which will not be taken away.” (Believer’s Commentary)

A few months ago, Dr. Thomas Wayment made headlines in the Mormon community when he came out with news that the Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible relied heavily on Adam Clarke's Bible Commentary. https://youtu.be/UOvu0O88sXM Thom: A student assistant of mine, Haley Wilson-Lemmon, was working for me about four years ago now. And I've worked on the JST my whole career. It's been interesting because it makes a claim to originality, at least modern Mormons claim that. And so, I've been probing it throughout my career. And, I had begun to think that Joseph Smith used a variety of sources, but I hadn't nailed it down. And so, I said to Haley, I think you should take Buck's Theological Dictionary. I think you should take Thomas Scott's Notes and I think you should take Adam Clarke and start comparing it to a series of test passages in the JST and just see what crops up because I'm suspecting there's influence, but I don't know. And she comes back, and we look at the column of Adam Clarke and it's overwhelming. There are some strong parallels. And so, over the course of about 12-14 months, Haley compared every single JST to all of these and we have a massive amount of data, and sure enough it. It's very clear. It's conclusive that Joseph Smith used Adam Clarke. And when I say use, I want to stick by that term. This isn't him simply saying, "Okay, here's three sentences in Clarke. I'm going to copy it out and call that inspiration." It's not that. He has words that come from Clarke that now come into kind of an expanded sentence that Joseph has created. Clarke will recommend flipping the order of verses and Joseph will do that. Weird words like unicorn in Isaiah, Joseph will go to [Clarke] to realize that's not unicorn. And so, he'll add [Clarke]'s statement about it or he'll say, this is re'em. What implications does that have for Latter-day Saints of faith? Thom: That's really been how the conversation has kind of taken life, which in some ways is unfortunate. In some ways it is a good moment for pause. What I see as a scholar is it's confronted a narrative about the JST that people have, that the JST is a moment of absolute revelation. No other influences happened that he was giving us the Bible as it was originally. And if you had that view, it's going to be a hard thing. And, yet as a historian, it's unfortunate. Joseph never made that claim. He never tells us that the Lord commanded him to start it. There is no revelation that currently exists where he is directed or says he was directed to go translate the Bible. We find him recording a commandment to work on Matthew but not Genesis. And so, in this sense, he never canonized it. He never, if you will, said, "This is the original Bible." And during this time, he has another statement that we refer to as a revelation. "Seek ye out learning from the best books." And for heaven's sakes, that's what he's doing it. It's really a practical process. I suspect that there are other sources. I suspect it's not just Clarke and in the coming years, I'll play that hand a little more broadly. But this is him working on the Bible. For the Latter-day Saint who feels confronted by this, we know he studied Hebrew after this. He's trying to engage both his role as prophet, so he owns the text in one sense, but he continually feels like, "I need some training." And Clarke is a really good resource of the day and a modern scholar wouldn't feel that and I don't feel that, but of the day it's very good and I think he comes to trust Clarke. I think later he says, "Well, maybe I could learn Hebrew. And he does some work in Hebrew in Kirtland 1835 period. And I think again, like he went with the Book of Mormon, he went to Luther Bradish, he goes to Charles Anthon and others to say, "Can you help me?" Or, "Can you translate this?" He has a scholarly component in every one of his translations and that to me seems pretty normal. But, maybe to the modern believer it might confront a narra...
Week 2 – Jeff Maness – August 12th, 2018 If pride as at the root of your heart then noise will be the fruit from your heart. We have to get love to the root so that love becomes the fruit. In this culture of noise, only a love that is not jealous, boastful, proud or rude will rise above the noise. Love Is Louder – Pride When love is at the root of my heart then love will be the fruit from my heart. Big Question: What is the fruit of love? Main Scripture: 1 Corinthians 13:4b-5a Free YouVersion Bible app events search “Element Church WY” 2 1 Corinthians 13:4b-5a 4 Love is not jealous (literally does not envy) or boastful or proud 5 or rude. Romans 1:29-30 29 Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip. 30 They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents. 1. Love celebrates with others James 4:1-2a 1 What is causing the quarrels and fights among you? (Noise) Don't they come from the evil desires at war within you? 2 You want what you don't have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can't get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Love is not grieved because someone else possesses a greater portion of earthly, intellectual, or spiritual blessings. Those who have this pure love rejoice as much at the happiness, the honor, the wealth, and the comfort of others, as they do with their own. They are ever willing that others should be preferred before them. — Adam Clarke 2. Love sacrifices for others He who would love must be self-renouncing. All true love is a self-sacrifice. Where true love is, self-seeking cannot also be. Self is ever before others as an object to be served, and to be surrounded by a halo of honor from others. Love seeks to serve, and to lift others up with honor. — Sermon Bible Commentary People say, “I'm looking for a church that can meet my needs.” What we should be saying is, “I'm looking for a church who's needs I can meet.” 3. Love surrenders all others Love does not act improperly. (unbecomingly, unseemly)
