To ensure that we don't become misled it is important that we understand truth so well that we can spot a counterfeit a mile away. It is for this reason I wanted to do this two-part series on the Nemenhah Record. With that said last week me and Justin Francom broke down the Nemenhah Record and explored some pretty problematic teachings found in this alleged book of scripture. Today Justin joins me again as we finish our examination of the Nemenhah Record, and spoiler alert we are about see where the Nemenhah Record really disagress with the Book of Mormon and other principles of the Restoration as taught by the Prophet Joseph Smith. Today we cover what the Nemenhah Record says about changing the ordinance of Baptism, Plural Marriage and some damning evidence on timelines that really puts the record at odds with what has already been revealed by the Prophet Joseph Smith. I would ask that you please share these episodes with your family and friends who have bought into this record so that they might not be deceived

THE PRIESTHOOD LAW OF PLURAL MARRIAGE, Chapter 7 of The Church and The Priesthood    Pages 99 to 108   I am the Lord thy God, and will give unto thee the law of my Holy Priesthood, as was ordained by me and my Father before the world was. (D & C 132:28) [Then follows the law pertaining to plural marriage.]   Today there are approximately 30,000 Fundamentalist Mormons who believe in plural marriage. They have faith that by righteously obeying that law, they will receive corresponding blessings in the hereafter. Thus, they defend and obey the law of plural marriage even though they know it is against the laws of the LDS Church, the state and the nation. Many of these people were formerly active and loyal members of the Church, holding positions in their wards and stakes; yet they are willing to suffer excommunication, condemnation and alienation from church, family and friends because of their firm religious convictions. They believe plural marriage is a Priesthood law that can be lived outside of and separate from the corporate LDS Church.   Using the words of early general authorities and other prominent Saints, several (20) questions are briefly answered in this chapter showing that plural marriage is an eternal Priesthood law. It is just one of several doctrines and laws that the Church can vote to accept or reject, but that does not change their eternal nature.

These revelations received by our prophets and seers are all of God, and we cannot repeal or disannul them without making God out a liar, and God cannot lie. . . . I wish to remind you of a certain revelation given through President Taylor. The command was given to set our quorums and houses in order, and the promise was that if we should obey the command, God would fight our battles for us; but we did not obey the command, so God did not fight our battles for us. If we [192] had obeyed that command and revelation given through President Taylor, there would have been no Manifesto. (Smoot Investigations 1:8, Jan. 28, 1901)

PLURAL MARRIAGE, Part 3 of Chapter 12 of The Church and The Gospel  Pages 186 to 191 Joseph Smith (1843) The same God that has thus far dictated me and directed me and strengthened me in this work, gave me this revelation and commandment on celestial and plural marriage and the same God commanded me to obey it. He said to me that unless I accepted it and introduced it, and practiced it, I, together with my people, would be damned and cut off from this time hence forth. And they say if I do so, they will kill me. O, what shall I do? If I do not practice it, I shall be damned with my people. If I do teach it, and practice it, and urge it, they say they will kill me, and I know they will. But we have got to observe it. It is an eternal principle and was given by way of commandment and not by way of instruction. (Contributor 5:259) Heber C. Kimball (1856) You might as well deny “Mormonism”, and turn away from it, as to oppose the plurality of wives. Let the Presidency of this Church, and the Twelve Apostles, and all the authorities unite and say with one voice that they will oppose that doctrine, and the whole of them would be damned. What are you opposing it for? It is a principle that God has revealed for the salvation of the human family. (JD 5:203-204) Brigham Young (1865) There is no half-way house. The childish babble about another revelation is only evidence of how half-informed men can talk. The “Mormons” have either to spurn their religion and their God, and sink self-damned in the eyes of all civilization at a moment when most blessed in the practice of their faith, or go calmly on to the same issue which they have always had.

PLURAL MARRIAGE, Part 2 of Chapter 12 of The Church and The Gospel  Pages 179 to 186 Because the revelation was received in 1843, the command to live that principle also came with it. Many men such as Brigham Young, John Taylor, Orson Pratt, William Clayton, Heber C. Kimball, and many others were commanded to obey it. Some men, however, such as William Law (Joseph's second counselor), Stake President William Marks, and High Councilmen Leonard Soby and Austin Cowles, rejected the revelation. This division began a split in the Church which has continued ever since. Men who opposed the revelation set up a printing establishment in Nauvoo with the intent to expose the plural marriage doctrine. The first and only edition was published as The Nauvoo Expositor on May 10, 1844, and it referred to the revelation on the “plurality of wives, for time and eternity.” Before the Prophet Joseph was killed, he predicted that his death would not end the persecutions that would come from the Saints living plural marriage: It is thought by some that our enemies would be satisfied with my destruction; but I tell you that as soon as they have shed my blood, they will thirst for the blood of every man in whose heart dwells a single spark of the spirit of the fulness of the gospel . . . . It is not only to destroy me but every man and woman who dares believe the doctrines that God hath inspired me to teach to this generation. PLURAL MARRIAGE, Part 1 of Chapter 12 of The Church and The Gospel    Pages 174 to 179   An Ancient Doctrine Polygamy, polygyny, or plural marriage certainly did not start with the Mormons. All the people of the Orient, who are descendants of Japheth, the son of Noah, have accepted it as an integral part of their marriage practices. All of the Arabic nations, who are descendants of Abraham, have continued to allow plural marriage because it is a principle of their religion that was practiced and honored by father Abraham. All through the Bible the great and grand prophets, patriarchs and kings believed that God gave that principle as a divine revelation. Hence, it has been acceptable in most nations. This gave the Apostle Orson Pratt reason to say in 1852: Plurality of wives is a doctrine very popular among most of mankind at the present day. It is practiced by the most powerful nations of Asia and Africa, and by numerous nations, inhabiting the Islands of the sea, and by the Aboriginal nations of the great Western Hemisphere. The one wife system is confined principally to a few small nations, inhabiting Europe and to those who are of European origin, inhabiting America. It is estimated by the most able historians of our day that about four-fifths of the population of the globe, believe and practice, according [175] to their respective laws, the doctrine of a Plurality of Wives. So there has been a lot of revisionist history that has made its way into Mormon circles as of late in conjunction with this, it has required those pushing these false narratives to either twist or flat out lie about what the scriptures say. With this in mind I want to address some of the lies and wishful thinking. One of the more pernicious ideas is that scripture denounces the practice of celestial plural marriage. Well today I have Jacob Vidrine back on the podcast to address this idea. Jacob and I will breakdown the scriptures (in context) to give you a fuller picture of what the scriptures have to say and not say about the practice of celestial plural marriage. Towards the end of the podcast, I name names of those pushing this narrative and also the repercussions of buying into those lies. Grab a pen and paper to take some notes so you can push back on these lies when they arise.  --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dave-kirkenbower/support

In 1852, only eight years after Joseph Smith's death, Church leaders in Utah publicly announced to the astonished world what some had suspected—that Latter-day Saints did indeed practice the principle of plural marriage. But now that it was out there in the open, it could be openly challenged and attacked. And it was. Relentlessly. For decades.   In today's episode of Church History Matters we'll walk you through the history of how plural marriage came to a rocky end under the draconian legislation and crushing pressure of the United States government. We'll dive into the George Reynolds trial, President Wilford Woodruff's Manifesto, the Reed Smoot trials and the Second Manifesto, the resignation of the two members of the Quorum of the Twelve over this, the beginning of the FLDS Church, and more!    For show notes and transcript for this and other episodes go to https://doctrineandcovenantscentral.org/church-history-matters-podcast/

In June and July of 1843 tensions ran high in the marriage of Joseph and Emma Smith. After she had tried but failed to embrace the principle of plural marriage earlier that May, and after Hyrum Smith had tried but failed to convince her of the rightness of plural marriage even with a copy of Doctrine and Covenants 132 in hand, records indicate that Emma became for a time rebellious, bitter, resentful, and angry. In fact from July through September of 1843 Emma became confrontational to Joseph's other wives trying (sometimes successfully) to drive them away from him.  In this episode of Church History Matters we dive into the details of this challenging time as well as the reconciliatory place Joseph and Emma ultimately seem to come to on this. We'll also dig into how Joseph's practice of plural marriage was a major factor behind the conspiracy which ultimately led to his martyrdom. As Joseph Smith quietly practiced plural marriage in Nauvoo in 1842 and 43, all was not well. Three people in particular complicated things for Joseph. The first was John C. Bennett, a highly gifted convert who's meteoric rise to civic and church leadership in Nauvoo abruptly ended when he was exposed for his secret practice of “spiritual wifery,” which was nothing more or less than illicit serial adultery. Bennett's defamatory opposition to Joseph after his excommunication was fierce and directly impacted Joseph's own private practice of plural marriage. Surprisingly, Joseph's own brother and member of the First Presidency, Hyrum Smith, was openly opposed to polygamy during this time and sought to use his influence to put down any hint of it in Nauvoo, all the while suspecting that his own brother and others of the apostles may be living it. Yet amidst his opposition, in one key moment, everything changed for Hyrum. Joseph's wife Emma Smith was the third and most important person in his life to complicate his practice of plural marriage. Although she sought for a time to embrace it, Emma struggled mightily with this practice on many levels—to the point that it almost ended their marriage.  In this episode of Church History Matters we discuss each of these three individuals—John C. Bennett, Hyrum, and Emma Smith—and how each factored in to the complexities and troubles of living plural marriage in Nauvoo. Plural marriage—a form of religious polygamy (or polygyny to be technical)—is one of the most controversial and faith-challenging aspects of the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was difficult when it was first introduced in the early Church and, although it was discontinued over 130 years ago, it is still a difficult issue for many both within and outside of the Church to reckon with.  So why was it introduced into the Church in the first place? When did Joseph Smith first learn that this practice would be restored? Why did he delay practicing it? How did he and others who were asked to live it initially respond? And what were the four theological reasons given by the Lord in the Doctrine and Covenants to justify the practice of plural marriage?  In this episode of Church History Matters we explore the best sources to answer these and related questions. And while we know that learning the answers to these questions may not fully remove one's wrestle with this issue, we believe it can sure help. This episode continues the adventures of Thomas L. Kane, who left his home in February 1858 and set out for Salt Lake City.  His self-imposed mission was to stop the Utah War.  His plan was, as his wife Elizabeth later wrote, was somewhat hazy:  “Tom's plan was to go in disguise to Utah by way of California, winter though it was, and make his unexpected appearance at Brigham Young's very gates, relying upon his own mental force and Young's knowledge of the sincerity of his goodwill to the Mormons. He actually intended to turn a whole people's will and make them ask for peace in the hour of their triumph.”  But before he could get to Brigham Young's gates, he first had to pass through the towns of Los Angeles and San Bernadino. At the time, both these towns were hornet nests of anti-Mormon frenzy.  On this episode, we recount:  o  How Thomas Kane assumed the identity of "Doctor Osborne," and came up with a cover story about needing to get to Utah to collect specimens of western flora. We recount how (somewhat ham-fisted) effort at undercover work.       o  Just how dangerous Los Angeles and San Bernadino were for Latter-day Saints in 1857 - 1858.  For background, we recount the (mis)adventures of William Wall, who passed through San Bernadino on his way home to Provo from a mission to Australia.  He was pursued by a lynch mob, but managed to evade them twice. But he had a final confrontation as he prepared to leave the City.  We recount how, as William Wall was surrounded, he bore a "powerful testimony of the Gospel."  Then, he bore a different kind of testimony with what he called a "splendid double-barreled shotgun" and a "good Bowie knife," impressing upon the mob that some of them would die along with him.     o The Vigilance Committee of San Bernadino's efforts to hunt the mysterious "Doctor Osborne."    o How Kane saved from the violence of the Vigilance Committee by Frances Swan Clark and Colonel Alden Jackson.  To learn more about the stories in this episode, please check out these (excellent!) sources:     o  Ardis A. Before Lot Smith's raid on the Wagon Supplies, conventional wisdom in the Government and the Nation seemed to be that talk of the Latter-day Saints actually resisting the Army was just that – Talk.   But when news of the raid finally reached the states, it was shocking. Overnight, Johnston's Army lost roughly half its supplies for the campaign. Johnston and his troops would spend a hungry, freezing winter on half-rations in the ashes of what had once been Fort Bridger – which also had been burned by the Nauvoo Legion to deny shelter to Johnston's troops.        But Lot Smith's raid sparked a dangerous escalation of the conflict.  A Grand Jury hastily handed down indictments for treason against Church Leaders, raising the grim prospect of death by hanging.  Army leaders -- Johnston, McClellan, William T. Sherman, Harney -- all longed for a pitched battle against the Mormons.  Latter-day Saints faced danger and new threats from the north (with native tribes turning against them), from the south (with the intrepid Captain Randolph Marcy on the verge of finding a way through Utah's arid red rock desert), and from the west (as California's clamored to raise a force to attack Utah and avenge the murders of the Baker-Francher Wagon Company at Mountain Meadows).    On this episode, we explore what easily could have been the most precarious and dangerous moment the Latter-day Saints have ever faced. For the materials and sources in this story, we owe a special thanks to Utah War historian William "Bill" MacKinnon - His two-volume set, "At Sword's Point: A Documentary History of the Utah War to 1858" is an extraordinary resource for anyone interested in learning more about the Utah War.    Search Terms: Utah War, William McClellan, "Little Mac", William Tecumseh Sherman, Albert Sidney Johnston, William Selby "Squaw Killer" Harney, Brigham Young, John Taylor, Poerter Rockwell, Civil War, Mormon History, Latter-day Saints, Utah Territory, Polygamy, Plural Marriage, U.S. Army,  Fort Bridger, Lot Smith, Salt Lake City, 2LT James Henry Martineau, George Watts, Echo Canyon, Albert Sidney Johnston, Brigham Young, Charlie Becker, James Ferguson,  Wild Bill Hickman, Nauvoo Legion, International Latter-day Saints, Immigration, Prisoners, Law of War, Law of Armed Conflict, Russia, British Empire, Alaska, British Colombia.

In the 1920s, an elderly and well-respected Oregon Rancher, Charlie Becker, prepared a sketch of his adventurous life, the places he had seen, the adventures he had lived, and the hardships he had overcome. He also disclosed that, as a young man, he had served as a Civilian Teamster accompanying Johnston's Army during the Utah War.  In an unguarded moment, he allowed himself to be captured by a Latter-day Saint Raiding party. He would spend the next months a prisoner in the Utah Territory, where he would be one of the few outsiders to see up close the lives of the Latter-day Saints in their mountain home.  On this episode, we will explore the story of Charlie Becker, a prisoner of the Utah War. This episode covers:- How Charlie Becker was captured by a Mormon raiding party; - His interrogation by Lieutenant General Daniel H. Wells and the General Staff, including the hot-tempered Irishman, Adjutant General James Ferguson;- How Daniel Wells quickly stomped out James Ferguson's suggestion that they find ways of "forcing" Becker to disclose more intelligence ("Tut! Tut! None of that, Mr. Ferguson!");- How Charles Decker brought Charlie Becker to his house, where he met two of Decker's Wives: Lena Young Decker (the daughter of Brigham Young) and  Margaret Jane Maxfield Decker and how, to his shock, the two women "[got] along splendidly, like an older and younger sister."   - How he was confined, with other prisoners, in Salt Lake City during a Christmas celebration, and how the prisoners and the good-natured Danish guard decided to celebrate  with a rousing game of "Blind Man's Bluff" -- and made so much racket they inadvertently summoned the notorious killer, Wild Bill Hickman, who promptly arrested the guards and replaced them with "a monstrous, surely Swede."  - How he was released and returned to COL Albert Sidney Johnston, where he reported how the Mormon people had treated him with great kindness (especially the Decker family, whom he describes as "a most lovable Mormon family").  For the materials and sources in this story, we owe a special thanks to Utah War historian William "Bill" MacKinnon - His two-volume set, "At Sword's Point: A Documentary History of the Utah War to 1858" is an extraordinary resource for anyone interested in learning more about the Utah War.    See also Rebecca  Bartholomew & Leonard J. Hank Hanegraaff, president of the Christian Research Institute and host of the Bible Answer Man broadcast, continues to reflect on the passing of famous individuals—specifically, John Madden and Harry Reid (both died December 28, 2021). Madden might be called the high priest of football. NFL games are highly ritualized and liturgical, and for many people, the NFL has become an object of worship—their idol. Madden, who won a Superbowl in 1976 with the Oakland Raiders and became the face of a videogame empire based on the NFL, was a coaching phenomenon and football's greatest evangelist. But he now has passed from this life into eternity. And then there is Harry Reid, who led the Senate from 2007–2015. The Democrats grumbled about his ban on partial-birth abortion and his opposition to Roe v. Wade—and he was a died-in-the-wool Mormon. Thus, Reid passed from this life believing that “God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens” (Joseph Smith). He believed that Jesus Christ is not the self-existent Creator of all things but is, rather, the spirit-brother of Lucifer, conceived in heaven by a celestial Mother and then came in flesh as a result of the Father having sex with the virgin Mary. He believed that “the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion” (Joseph Smith). He held to the four Mormon standard works—the Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, Pearl of Great Price. It's worth noting that Doctrine and Covenants is a compilation of divine revelations that includes the doctrine of polygamy. Not until the Mormons were threatened by the federal government did Mormon president Wilford Woodruff receive a revelation relegating polygamy to the afterlife. And Pearl of Great Price is notorious for having been used by Mormonism to prevent those of African heritage from entering the priesthood and from being exalted to godhood. Reid believed that Temple Mormons will make it to the Celestial Heaven, but only those who are sealed in secret Temple rituals will make it to the third level of the Celestial Kingdom and become gods of their own planets. Because of such teachings, and many others, Mormonism has little to do with true Christianity. What is vitally important for all of us to recognize is that there is a true faith—the true faith once for all delivered to the saints (Jude 3). Everything else is a corruption of the true faith. Consider how important it is to be in the true faith, because no one gets out of this world alive. Let us glorify God in all that we think, say, and do. The doctrine of eternal marriage is foundational to the purpose of mortality. Perpetuating our marriage and family relationships into eternity is not only something that is possible through faithfulness to sacred covenants with God, but it is something our hearts long for. Even those who are married "until death do you part" tend to feel in their hearts a hope that their family relationships will continue after death. Learn in this episode about not just the act of marriage but the doctrine of eternal marriage.  In this "Come, Follow Me" episode, we also address the early practice of plural marriage by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This isn't a comprehensive discussion about every facet of the practice, but it does seek to shed light on some answers to common questions about the practice within the context in which it was revealed to the Prophet Joseph Smith and likely other Old Testament prophets who were also commanded to practice this law.
