Episode 290 of “The Sports Experience Podcast” is here & we're continuing our block on some of the NFL's best postseason games of all time.In this episode we're discussing the 1983 NFC Championship between the Washington Redskins and the San Francisco 49ers.Expectations were high for a game which featured the Super Bowl champions from the previous two seasons.Washington dominated the first half of play with their defense, and led San Francisco 7-0 at half time. The lead could have been bigger had kicker Mark Moseley not had an off day.Washington took a commanding 21-0 lead by the time the third quarter ended thanks to a touchdown run by John Riggins and touchdown catch by “Downtown” Charlie Brown. At that point, all appeared lost for the 49ers until Joe Montana led a furious comeback. In just over eight minutes, Montana threw three touchdown passes to tie the game with 7:08 to play.Washington then went on a drive which lasted 6:12, and were assisted by two controversial penalties by San Francisco's Eric Wright and Ronnie Lott.It all came down to Moseley, who had missed four field goals in the game, to make a 25 yard field goal to put the Redskins ahead 24-21. Moseley drilled the kick and Washington was off to Super Bowl XVIII in Tampa.Connect with us on Instagram!Chris Quinn: @cquinncomedyDominic DiTolla: @ditolladominicProducer: @ty_englestudioInstagram: @thesportsexperiencepodcastIf you enjoy this podcast, please help support us @:https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-sports-experience-pod/support#sportspodcast#comedypodcast #washingtonredskins#sanfranciscofortyniners#nflplayoffs
On December 20, 1980, teenage sweethearts Sabrina Gonsalves and John Riggins were supposed to attend a birthday party but never arrived. 36 hours later their bodies were found by police in a California ravine. The case went unsolved. Then in 2002, using advanced DNA technology, police were able to match samples stored in a FBI database to a convicted rapist. “48 Hours" correspondent Troy Roberts reports. Rerun: Hooters, the beach bar chain famous for its flirtatious waitresses, first flung open its doors in Clearwater, Florida on 4th October, 1983. Its publicity-friendly ‘Hooters Girls' - and a chance visit by John Riggins, star fullback for the Washington Redskins - ensured the concept took off, spawning 425 outlets in 30 countries. However, more recently, Hooters was hit by rival ‘breastaurants' Tilted Kilt and Twin Peaks, and a slow generational shift away from ‘male' environments in which exclusively female serving employees are forced to wear sexualised outfits and banter with customers. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly consider the clever but disconcerting clauses within Hooters' employment contracts; reveal the thinking behind the safety briefings on-board short-lived airline Hooters Air; and explain how Hooters Girls kept U.S. troops entertained in Afghanistan… Further Reading: • ‘Wanna do a Dad a really big favor? Next, they discuss George's all-time performance in the 1999 NFL Playoffs, how George compares to Hall of Fame power backs John Riggins, and Larry Csonka, and the 10,000 Rushing Yards Club (15:55). Finally, they deep dive the overlooked statistic of carries and why we should care about 300+ carry seasons (42:30), before making a final call on whether or not George deserves a place in the HOF (49:20).

Adam Harstad examined production among older NFL players and he's stumbled upon a "What" without a "Why." He and Matt Waldman discuss on this week's RSP Film and Theory. Footballguys staff writer Adam Harstad joins RSP Film and Data as Matt Waldman's cohost for the 2023 football season to discuss practices that will make you a better fantasy GM and NFL fan. There are a lot of excellent writers and analysts in the fantasy industry. There are few that I hold in as high a regard as Adam. He's a forthright human being with a tremendous intellect whose approach to analysis in this space differs from most. He's also an excellent fantasy GM in re-draft and dynasty formats. Unlike Dwain McFarland, whose work delves into the statistical process, Adam spends a lot of time examining results and dealing with broad themes of decision-making that help us become better fantasy players and fantasy analysts. Topic I'll let Adam Harstad's intro from his Footballguys feature, Dynasty, In Theory, do the job of teeing up this week's topic: For a long time, it was taken as an article of faith that advancements in training, nutrition, and medical science (as well as an increased focus on player health and safety) would extend careers. And a few high-profile outliers likely convinced many that that was taking place. Tom Brady won an MVP at age 40 and was a second-team All-Pro at 44. Travis Kelce is likely to make his ninth straight Pro Bowl at age 34 and is a good bet to earn his fifth first-team All-Pro while he's at it. Adrian Peterson had 1200 scrimmage yards at 33, 1000 scrimmage yards at 34, and even recorded a 100-yard effort in his first game with a new team at age 35. Frank Gore started 14 games at 37. But outliers have always existed. Marcus Allen logged 1100 scrimmage yards at age 35 and 36 back in the '90s. John Riggins logged 380 touches and was a first-team All Pro at age 34 in the '80s. Joe Perry was a regular starter to age 35 back in the '60s. Y.A. Tittle won an MVP at age 37 back in 1963. Don Maynard, Charlie Joiner, and Jerry Rice set standards for longevity in the '70s, '80s, '90s, and '00s. The best way to track longevity is not through the single oldest player at a given position but through the prevalence of old players in general. And on that count, the last decade has been one of the worst in history. And of course, if you want to know about the rookies from this draft class, you will find the most in-depth analysis of offensive skill players available (QB, RB, WR, and TE), with the 2024 Rookie Scouting Portfolio for $21.95–currently available for $19.95 via early-bird discount that runs through December 21, 2023. Matt's new RSP Dynasty Rankings and Two-Year Projections Package is available for $24.95 If you're a fantasy GM interested in purchasing past publications for $9.95 each, the 2012-2023 RSPs also have a Post-Draft Add-on that's included at no additional charge. Best yet, proceeds from sales are set aside for a year-end donation to Darkness to Light to combat the sexual abuse of children.

The Brian D. O'Leary Show December 21, 2022 Bill Schonely “… wherever you may be…” The Final Goodbye for “The Schonz” https://youtu.be/wna_mCmHQeI Franco Harris Steelers Hall of Fame RB Franco Harris, author of 'The Immaculate Reception,' dies at 72 Starting with the 1980 season, Harris became the career rushing leader among active players. The 1984 Seattle Seahawks did have the “Original” Curt Warner on the roster, but the 3rd pick of the 1983 NFL Draft out of Penn State was injured in the opening game versus the Cleveland Browns, ending his season. Franco Harris—coming off a season in 1983 where he rushed for 1,007 yards—was released by the Steelers during training camp before the 1984 season, over an ostensible pay dispute. After the 1983 season, Harris was only 363 yards away from breaking Jim Brown's career rushing record. Harris joined the Seahawks in September, but only ended up playing in 8 games and ended up with 170 yards rushing on the season. He never played in the NFL again. After taping this episode, John Ziegler tweeted that Franco had been at work on a podcast of his own about the Penn State-Paterno-Sandusky case. NFL Legends Greg Lloyd and Delvin Williams, Plus Guardian Caps Founders Lee & Erin Hanson Join Us... Greg Lloyd shares his disdain for "this game you call football now." We also get his thoughts on the current state of the Steelers, plus we get the story behind his now famous "I wasn't hired for my disposition" t-shirt. Delvin Williams talks about his college career at the University of Kansas and talking with the 2 star RBs that came before him, Gale Sayers and John Riggins. We hear about what it was like growing up poor in Houston's 5th Ward, being drafted by the 49ers, the hurt feelings when they traded him to Miami so San Francisco could trade for OJ, and the difficulty of being suddenly retired when you're cut and the phone doesn't ring again. Lee & Erin Hanson take us back to when and why they designed Guardian Caps which you see now on every helmet during training camp and practice. We hear about the long journey to getting their device approved by the colleges and the NFL, plus other safety-related products they're working on.

Then, they discuss his role as the lead blocker for John Riggins' famous touchdown run in Super Bowl XVII, the movie "The Blind Side", whether or not Jacoby was better in the 1980s than HOFER Jimbo Covert, and break down the top left tackles of the 1980s (11:45). Finally, they debate who was actually the best "Hog" on that famous Washington offensive line (40:11), before making a final call on whether or not Jacoby deserves to be inducted into the HOF (55:01).
In this episode of Sports the NEMO way we bring the Washington Commanders to the table for discussion.

Hosted by Paul C. Cuthbert and Robert Kuney.Episode 52 was the Honchos Super Bowl hangover episode, so it was (almost) all football, all the time. After some show-opening small talk about vacations and family, the Honchos started the festivities with the “Who Wore It Best” segment. Today they paid tribute to NFL Hall of Fame linebacker Ray Lewis who wore number 52 with the Baltimore Ravens. Before leaving the non-football portion of the showgram, there were a few Headlines, which included snow blower rampages, Valentine's Day candy, and the worst Black History Month tribute ever. There was only one thing in the sack of sports and that, of course, was a thorough autopsy on Super Bowl 56. The Honchos tackled (see what we did there) all aspects of the big game, plus the halftime show of course, as the Honchos waved goodbye to football as it went into hibernation for the Winter and Spring. Just because there can never be enough football yak, the Honchos also rapped about the newest NFL expansion team, the Washington Commanders, including thoughts from the great John Riggins on what a new name and logo mean to the players of the past. After such a gluttonous feast of football, the only dessert can be the Dope of the Week. This week's winner was Jonathan Allen, DT for your Washington Commanders. All lived and archived shows at sportshonchos.com.Follow everywhere @sportshonchos.com

The 1982 NFL season wasn't a marathon, it was a sprint. A players strike reduced a 16-week schedule to nine that season, leaving teams scrambling to reach the playoffs. Most clubs appeared frantic and rusty after the layoff. But the Washington Redskins dominated all comers under head coach Joe Gibbs. Washington hired Gibbs in 1981, and just one season later, had molded the team in his hardnosed image. The offensive line, nicknamed The Hogs, was equally adept at blasting holes for fullback John Riggins as they were protecting their Pro Bowl passer, Joe Theismann. Powered up front, Washington muscled through the final stretch and lost only once during the regular season. From there, the postseason was expanded to four rounds and included 16 teams. But while the road to Super Bowl XVII was a unique one, Gibbs Redskins won the NFL title by sticking with its tried-and-true running game. Led by a big day from Riggins, Washington ran over the Miami Dolphins, 27-17.

Steve Shull was a Captain for the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl XVII when Washington Redskins Hall Of Fame running back John Riggins ran over a Dolphins defender and broke off a 43 yard touchdown on a 4th and 1 play which is still known as one of the most defining moments in Super Bowl history. This run overshadowed what may have been the biggest hit in Super Bowl history when Steve Shull knocked the Redskins Clarence Harmon unconscious on a key block that led To a touch down that gave the Dolphins the lead before succumbing to the Redskins in the second half. Steve's journey to the NFL was extraordinary. He was recruited by one small school out of high school and after a solid Collegiate career he was an undrafted free agent for the Miami Dolphins Don Shula the winningest coach in NFL history . As an undersized linebacker from a small College Steve defied all odds and outworked the competition to earn the final roster spot and become a linebacker and stand out on special teams . The lessons engrained in him on the gridiron —work ethic, mental toughness, thinking big and discipline have served him well in his post NFL career. He's the founder and CEO of Performance Coaching where he coaches some the biggest real estate agents in world each closing hundreds of millions of dollars in home sales each year. This is the real life story of a long shot overcoming impossible odds, proving once again that relentless hard work and preparation always beats talent on and off of the field.
