I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Wednesday morning, the 19th of February 2025, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start with Obadiah 1:21: "…And the kingdom shall be the Lord's."Then we go to Psalm 22:28:"For the kingdom is the Lord's, And He rules over the nations."The last scripture is Matthew 25:34: " Then the King will say to those on His right hand, 'Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world."The kingdom of God shall never fall! Where are we investing our time and energy? We live in a time when nothing is secure and solid. Where do you invest your money? Where do you go for peace and quiet? What country in this world is at peace at the moment? In 1939, Neville Chamberlain, the Prime Minister of Great Britain, went across to Munich, Germany, to meet with Adolf Hitler, who was bent on conquering Europe then. Chamberlain wanted peace, so Hitler said to him, and I quote: "No more territorial demands to make in Europe." He flew back to Britain. Photographed as he got off the plane - that very famous photo of him showing the people of Britain that he had got a peace agreement with Hitler - No more war. Folks, he had barely said that, and Hitler continued his conquest of Europe and declared war against Britain. Where do we find peace? Where do we find solitude? Only when we meet the Prince of Peace! Peace is freedom from anxiety and war - but the peace I am talking about this morning is your peace of mind, folks. Jesus is the Prince of Peace. In John 14:27, He says: "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." Today, let us invest in eternal things; let's invest in the peace of God; let's spend time with Him.Father, I pray for my friends listening to this message right now. I pray that You will give them Your peace. Peace that cannot be found in this world, peace that will last forever. In Jesus' name, Amen.God bless you and goodbye.

In episode two of our Case Studies season, Just Science sat down with Tim Fayle, Training Capability Lead for IDEMIA Australasia and Chair of the International Association for Identification's Latent Print Certification Board, to discuss the utility of friction ridge detail inadvertently captured via photographs as a valuable and potentially underutilized type of evidence within a variety of case types. While the use of latent fingerprints recovered from crime scenes has been established as an important type of forensic evidence for decades, the increasingly widespread use of social media and other digital platforms has contributed to even more opportunities to garner friction ridge detail evidence following a crime. Practitioners and researchers alike have demonstrated the value of utilizing photographs presenting inadvertently captured finger and palm friction ridge detail – obtained via social media posts, other digital forums, and cellphone data – to identify perpetrators and help bring justice to victims. Listen along as Tim describes several cases where inadvertently photographed friction ridge detail was utilized to make an identification to a perpetrator, the various methods and techniques latent print examiners can add to their toolkit to analyze and compare this type of friction ridge detail, and his recommendations for ensuring this type of evidence is not overlooked or underutilized within future cases. This episode is funded by the National Institute of Justice's Forensic Technology Center of Excellence (Award No. 15PNIJ-21-GK-02192-MUMU).

Photographed by Adrian Pingstone in March 2007. Aviation News GE and NASA to accelerate understanding of contrails The "Contrail Optical Depth Experiment" (CODEX) is a research project conducted through a NASA and GE Aerospace partnership to study the formation and behavior of contrails. Contrails are clouds of ice particles that airplanes can create when they fly through cold and humid air. Persistent contrails are thought to contribute to climate warming. The primary goal of CODEX is to accurately measure the optical depth of contrails, which indicates how much light is blocked by the contrail. In the project, a GE Boeing 747-400 creates the contrails and NASA's G-III research aircraft (a modified Gulfstream III business jet) follows and scans the 747's wake with Advanced LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology to analyze the contrails produced by different engine configurations. This will hopefully lead to the development of engine technologies that reduce contrail formation. NASA Gulfstream G-III NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California, operates the Gulfstream G-III aircraft, NASA tail number 804, as an aerodynamics research test bed. Work with the aircraft is funded through NASA's Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate (ARMD) as part of the Environmentally Responsible Aviation (ERA) project under the agency's Integrated Systems Research Program. F-15E Pilot Recounts Having To Switch To Guns After Missiles Ran Dry During Iranian Drone Barrage An F-15E Strike Eagle shot down so many Iranian drones aimed at Israel that they ran out of air-to-air missiles. The crew was ordered to continue and use any weapon available, which left the Strike Eagle's 20mm Gatling Gun, capable of firing around 6,000 rounds per minute. Operating this gun is said to be risky with small, low, slow-moving targets. In this instance, the F-15 did not stop the drone. The Airbus Space-Flex galley and lavatory concept. Airbus says the A321XLR features a 4,700 nm range, 180-220 seats, and 30% lower fuel burn per seat than previous generation aircraft. The plane was launched in 2019 at the Paris Air Show. Compared to other A320 family aircraft, the A321XLR carries more fuel, has strengthened landing gear, and includes a revised wing trailing-edge flap for takeoff performance. Airbus offers two engine options: the CFM LEAP-1A and the Pratt & Whitney PW1100G. The first A321XLR was delivered to Iberia on 30 October 2024 and conducted its first revenue flight on 6 November 2024. The first long-haul flight with passengers was on 14 November 2024, from Madrid to Boston. Missouri woman Cassidy Rainwater was down on her luck in 2021. She told family that she was staying with an acquaintance, James Phelps, until she could get back on her feet, When Cassidy's family could not get in touch with her, they called in a welfare check. Police went to James' home and he told authorities that Cassidy had left in July 2021 to move to Colorado. Soon after Cassidy disappeared, an anonymous tip was sent in to the FBI. The tipster said that there were photos of Cassidy on the dark web. In the images, Cassidy could be seen being held captive in a cage. James Phelps and a friend of his, Timothy Norton, would end up being arrested for Cassidy's murder. The men attacked Cassidy while she was sleeping and ended up dismembering her body. Packages of her flesh were found in a freezer and had the date ‘July 24;' written on them. During court proceedings, the men admitted to going to their local Walmart in an attempt to find other victims. Both men are now serving life in prison. The old adage that 'a picture is worth a thousand words,' was never truer than when faithful Christians told stories of injustices, not with words, but through photos. At a time when photography was new technology used more for entertainment, Alice Seeley Harris, an English missionary, documented the horrors of human rights abuses in the Congo under the regime of King Leopold II of the Belgians. Children and adults with limbs cut off as punishment. Thousands of miles away, Jacob August Riis, a Denmark native, was exposing the squalid conditions of New York City neighborhoods. On this episode of Lighthouse Faith podcast, best-selling author Christina Stanton delves deeper into their stories that she first told in an article published last year, "Capture This: How Christians Used Cameras To Expose Injustice." What's disheartening about Riis and Harris' stories is how over the years secular media has ignored their Christian faith, even while honoring their work. Yet, it was their faith that compelled them to expose grave injustices at the turn of the century in parts of the globe that had been forgotten by Western culture, even when it was in their own backyards. The much-anticipated reunion between the Harry and his Charles was notably brief, lasting only about 30 minutes.Photographed upon his arrival at Clarence House shortly after 3:15 PM, following a 10-hour flight escorted by police, this marked Harry's first encounter with King Charles since the Coronation nine months prior. Despite the brief thirty minute length, it is notable that Charles made the decision to postpone his helicopter journey to Sandringham in order to have the 30-minute meeting with Prince Harry. sign for the family's dynamics. An insider told The Sun: “Charles always keeps a tight schedule and had a planned itinerary to leave London to rest and recuperate in Norfolk. He is very fastidious about time-keeping but it was significant that he delayed the flight to Sandringham when he knew Harry was visiting.”“After all, the Duke of Sussex had flown all the way from California at short notice and he accepted the gesture. There is cause for optimism.” Meghan Markle stayed behind in Montecito, California, as the couple now lacks a UK residence after their departure from Frogmore Cottage. After the meeting, the King and Camilla proceeded to their Sandringham estate, with their helicopter taking off from Buckingham Palace and arriving in Norfolk shortly thereafter.PR expert Ryan McCormick told the Mirror that Meghan would not be "received well by the public" unless she shows "the utmost concern for both Charles and Harry".Ryan said when “various news outlets reported that Meghan Markle was staying in LA while Harry rushed to Prince Charles' side in wake of his cancer diagnosis. On Twitter both #MeghanMarkle and #Markle hashtags are not trending favourably."Like any well-known figure, Markle's actions are constantly scrutinised. If she doesn't join Harry soon, speculation will build as to why and rumours will begin swirling."McCormick also pointed out the optics of Meghan not having visited her ow father, Thomas Markle.Harry reportedly stayed the night at a luxury hotel in London, and did not see his brother. It's also worth noting that Harry presumably will not be visiting Kate, to whom he was once close. We share that note without passing judgment, as it is not known if Harry asked, or didn't ask, or if Kate would want that.Piers Morgan was a little more direct, tweeting, “ William would rather shoot himself than see his traitor brother."

Ep.167 features Ayana V. Jackson, (b. 1977 in East Orange, New Jersey; lives and works between Brooklyn, NY and Johannesburg, South Africa) she uses archival impulses to assess the impact of the colonial gaze on the history of photography. By using her lens to deconstruct 19th and early 20th century portraiture, Jackson questions photography's authenticity and role in perpetuating socially relevant and stratified identities. Jackson's practice maps the ethical considerations and relationships between the photographer, subject, and viewer, in turn exploring themes around race, gender and reproduction. Her work examines myths of the Black diaspora and re-stages colonial archival images as a means to liberate the Black body. The various titles of her series nod to the stories she is reimagining. Jackson often casts herself in the role of historical figures to guide their narrative and directly access the impact of photography and its relationship to the human body. Jackson's work is collected by major local and international institutions including The Studio Museum in Harlem (New York, New York), The Newark Museum (Newark, New Jersey), J. P. Morgan Chase Art Collection (New York, New York), Princeton University Art Museum (Princeton, New Jersey), The National Gallery of Victoria (Melbourne, Australia), The Museum of Contemporary Photography (Chicago, Illinois) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (Seattle, Washington). Jackson was a 2014 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellow for Photography and the recipient of the 2018 Smithsonian Fellowship. In 2022, Jackson founded Still Art, an artist residency program focused on emerging Southern African contemporary artists of all disciplines in Johannesburg. In April 2023, Jackson opened her first major institutional exhibition at the National Museum of African Art - Smithsonian Institution. Photographed by Andile Buka. There is a mysterious object that, since the days of Nikola Tesla, has been detected numerous times in low earth orbit. An object cloaked in secrecy. An object that has been known to emit detectable but indecipherable radio signals that can be heard by even the most rudimentary equipment. Photographed for the first time in the late 1990's, it has been sighted and photographed again in 2023. What exactly is in these images? Who made it? A photograph from a scientific expedition to Catalina Island in 2021 shows what some believe is a wormhole to a parallel universe. This alone might not seem like much but when you consider the U.S. Government is actively trying to open up and break into said parallel universes as we speak you might reconsider how important this news is. Listen in to learn more.
Ep.155 features Shannon T. Lewis (b. 1981 in Toronto, Canada; lives and works in Berlin, Germany). She is an artist of Caribbean descent who reconfigures human forms and the spaces they inhabit within her complex and vivid paintings. Lewis begins with assemblage — the forefront of her practice — utilizing fragments of form and space. Particularly inspired by social cues of ethnicity, whimsical aspects in the work evoke a notion of freedom by examining marginalized identities. The use of architectural elements is a recurring element, oftentimes inspired by ornate iconography. Painted and interlaced limbs reconnoiter the history of femininity and its relation to Blackness. Lewis offers a window into freedom and body politics as the figurative compositions explore surrealism. Haunting portraits derived from archival and personal sources, Lewis imbues the past and the present to construct a utopian future. Lewis has exhibited in Canada, the United States, Trinidad, Switzerland, England, and Germany. She has a Bachelor of Arts from OCADU in Toronto (Canada) and a Master of Fine Arts from Goldsmiths, University of London (UK). Portrait of Shannon T. Lewis, 2022. Photographed by Evan Jenkins. Nick Brandt's photographic series always relate to the devastating impact that humankind is having on both the rapidly disappearing natural world and now on itself, as a result of environmental destruction, climate change and human actions. In the East African trilogy, On This Earth, A Shadow Falls Across The Ravaged Land(2001-2012), Nick established a style of portrait photography of animals in the wild similar to that of humans in a studio setting, shooting on medium format film, and attempting to portray animals as sentient creatures not so different from us.In Inherit the Dust(2016), Nick photographed in places in East Africa where the animals used to roam. In each location, life size panels of unreleased animal portrait photographs were erected, setting the panels within a world of explosive human development. It is not just the animals who are the victims in this out of control world, but also the humans.Photographed in color, This Empty World(2019) addresses the escalating destruction of the East African natural world at the hands of humans, showing a world where, overwhelmed by runaway development, there is no longer space for animals to survive. The people in the photos are also often helplessly swept along by the relentless tide of ‘progress'. Each image is a combination of two moments in time shot from the exact same camera position, once with wild animals that enter the frame, after which a set is built and a cast of people drawn from local communities. The Day May Break (2021) is the first part of a global series portraying people & animals impacted by environmental destruction. Photographed in Zimbabwe and Kenya, the people in the photos have all been badly affected by climate change - displaced by cyclones that destroyed their homes, displaced & impoverished after years-long severe droughts. The photos were taken at 5 sanctuaries/conservancies. The animals are almost all long-term rescues, due to everything from poaching of their parents to habitat destruction & poisoning. These animals can never be released back into the wild. Now habituated, it was therefore safe for strangers to be photographed close to the animals in the same frame.Nick has had solo gallery and museum shows around the world, including New York, London, Berlin, Stockholm, Paris and Los Angeles. All the series are published in book form. Born and raised in London, where he originally studied Painting and Film, Nick now lives in the southern Californian mountains. In 2010, Nick co-founded Big Life Foundation, a non-profit in Kenya/Tanzania employing more than 300 local rangers protecting 1.6 million acres of the Amboseli/Kilimanjaro ecosystem. On episode 199, Nick discusses, among other things:Why he moved to the USAHis 18 ‘wasted' years making filmsHis first trilogy of projects: On This Earth, A Shadow Falls Across The Ravaged LandHaving a niche that enabled him to start making a livingOnly taking photographs to exist on printsInherit the DustGoing in to each project both ‘excited and scared shitless'This Empty WorldThe Day May BreakHow he was personally impacted by wild fires at home in CaliforniaThe story of Kuda and Sky IIHis level of optimism about climate changeReferenced:Martin McDonaghRichard AvedonIrving PennArnold NewmanGreta Thunberg Website | Instagram“Every project I go into I have no bloody clue whether it's gonna work. Dorothy Catherine Draper is a truly forgotten figure in American history. She was the first woman to ever sit for a photograph — a daguerrotype, in the year 1840, upon the rooftop of the school which would become New York University.Catherine was the older sister of professor John William Draper, later the founder of the university's school of medicine. The Drapers worked alongside Samuel Morse in the period following his invention of the telegraph. The experiments of Draper and Morse, with Catherine as assistant, would set the stage for the entire history of American photography. The legendary portrait was taken when Miss Draper was a young woman but a renewed interest in the image in the 1890s brought the now elderly matron a bit of late-in-life recognition. To see the photograph of Draper and other early photography, visit our website. This episode originally appeared on Greg's podcast called The First which had a respectable run a few years ago. The feed for that show will be going away soon so we wanted to present some of that show's greatest hits over the next few months, in between regular episodes of the Bowery Boys as bonus stories about American history. Enjoy!
Today, we have an experimental episode in store. Having had some amazing guests on the show who have told us their backstories and shared with us their inspirations, why limit them to those that still walk the earth today? One of the historical figures that are very intriguing is Frederick Douglass, an abolitionist that was born a slave, and eventually became one of the most prominent abolitionists of his time, even heralded as the most famous Black man in the world, and the most photographed person in all of America in the 1800s.To share Douglass' fascinating life story, today's guest is Professor David W. Blight, the world's foremost expert on the life of Frederick Douglass. He is the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Douglass biography, Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom, which combines stories and insights, drawing from a repository of Douglass' letters and papers from the latter third of his life, which have not previously been written about. David is the Sterling Professor of African American studies and the director of the Guider Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition at Yale University, not to mention an award-winning author of seven other books, plus multiple op-eds. In this episode, Professor David Blight shares a bit about his personal relationship with Black history and what attracted him to Frederick Douglass, and goes on to share Douglass' story, from the reinvention of his life out of human bondage to discovering the power of language, and becoming a speaker during the golden age of oratory as performance, to his rise to stardom after writing his books, his mastery of multiple witting styles, and his declining mental health. David also explains the relationship Douglass had with his wife and his family, his foray into writing history, and his problem with the pleasures and perils of fame, as well as the legacy he has left us in his words.
