Send us a textLike Sir Chris Hoy, who last month revealed that he has terminal prostate cancer, Kevin Griffiths is determined to turn his own experience of living with stage four cancer into a positive. The Stoke-based cyclist, who hails from two of Britain's most revered cycling families, launched the Cancer My Arse initiative this year after discovering that his bowel cancer was terminal, four years on from initially undergoing treatment for the disease.Inspired, he says, to “create a positive out of a negative”, Griffiths hopes Cancer My Arse will galvanise a global community of fighters, survivors, and supporters to collectively raise significant funds for cancer research and support services, primarily through one simple, very unique, and rather difficult challenge – cycling out of the saddle for as long as possible. In a moving and inspiring interview, Kev details how he attempted to juggle running a fledgling business with his initial cancer treatment, how he came to terms with his terminal diagnosis, and why he hopes his campaigning – along with the positivity and optimism exuded by Hoy following his own terminal cancer announcement – will change the perception of what life can be like living with stage four cancer. And in the first part of the podcast, Ryan, Dan, and Emily celebrate Mark Cavendish's ‘official' retirement by sharing their favourite moments from the Manx Missile's storied 18-year pro career.
The English-born conductor talks about the brand-new recording "Spotlight on John Williams", the debut album of the Swiss-based City Light Symphony Orchestra, a 2-CD collection of some of John Williams' film masterpieces Spotlight on John Williams presents the City Light Symphony Orchestra conducted by English-born Maestro Kevin Griffiths in a 100-minute musical journey throughout some of John Williams' movie masterworks, featuring such acclaimed soloists as Valentine Michaud, Reinhold Friedrich and Paul Meyer. The selections include 21 tracks, including music from many of the popular film franchises the composer is associated with – the Star Wars saga is represented by a 4-movement suite from The Force Awakens and the Indiana Jones movies with the riveting “End Credits” suite from The Temple of Doom, while the Harry Potter wizarding world is featured with four selections from The Sorcerer's Stone, The Chamber of Secrets and The Prisoner of Azkaban. The stirring themes from such beloved film scores as Hook, Jurassic Park, Superman are also represented, but there is space for other Williams' gems like “Viktor's Tale” from The Terminal, the patriotic themes from JFK and Born on the Fourth of July, the jazzy 3-movement “Escapades” suite for alto saxophone from Catch Me If You Can, the lively opening credits from The Adventures of Tintin, and the stirring Americana of The Cowboys Overture. The recording is a real showcase of the City Light Symphony Orchestra's brilliance – the performance is tight and vigorous, the spectrum of sonorities they bring out is sparkling, full of colours and nuances, but always focused and sharp at the same time. In this conversation, conductor Kevin Griffiths talks with The Legacy of John Williams about the challenges of recording the album, how the project was put together and how he worked with the City Light Symphony Orchestra to bring out all the marvelous nuances and details of John Williams' music. He also talks about the differences of conducting live to picture vs. traditional symphonic setting, how the audience's perception of film music has changed throughout the years, and what John Williams' music meant for him since childhood, while also reflecting on the legacy of the Maestro. Spotlight on John Williams is released on Prospero Classical For more information, visit https://thelegacyofjohnwilliams.com/2021/04/09/kevin-griffiths-city-light-interview/

In a highly saturated market there is a lot to be said for record labels who trawl the earth to revitalize music which was perhaps thought lost to the depths of Discogs and glory seekers the world over. Isle Of Jura issued a statement of intent when they announced their debut release in the early months of last year. Their first release came in the form of a reissue of a highly sought after disco record from the 1980's, Escape From New York's "Fire In My Heart". An out of reach record was made attainable once again and the demand rocketed. The label then went on to re-release a balearic masterclass in the form of Chayell's "It's Never Too Hot". What lies ahead for the label in 2017 is a mystery, but expect the unexpected. We spoke to the label founder Kevin Griffiths as he delivers a flavour of the label.
One of the more enduring house labels over the years have been Tsuba Recordings, a label incubated in the UK and celebrated world-wide. Known for pushing and releasing the more underground side of house, Tsuba has developed into a label that is pretty much played by everyone who loves a good groove, with producers like Detroit Swindle, Spencer Parker, Sebo K, Galcher Lustwerk and more, all boasting a Tsuba guernsey. Just have a listen to ‘Kung Fu Cantona’, arguably the labels biggest track (it did spend 2 months at number 2 on Beatport’s Deep House chart), to get an idea of the what Tsuba is all about - it’s smoky and hypnotic groove is hard to resist. The man behind that track, as well as the Tsuba label, Kevin Griffiths, is also next in line to deliver the next Balance Selections podcast. Over the past 8 years Kevin Griffiths have toured around the globe, and has graced the decks at the world’s most prestigious venues ranging from London’s fabric to Berlin’s Watergate. Now based in Adelaide, Australia, the Tsuba main man is showing no signs of slowing down with his productions and label, announcing projects like the vinyl-only pseudonym Midnight Special, a collaboration with ex-Peace Division main man Justin Drake, and also various Tuba releases (singles, EPs and compilations). Kevin Griffiths is truly a house disciple, and his podcast is a fine representation of all different degrees of house, from deep to tech to acid. It’s time for a session of some proper underground, head-down and hazy house vibes. Tracklisting and interview: http://www.balancemusic.com.au/news/balance-selections-011-kevin-griffiths-tsuba/
Metroline Episode 45 is finally here. Our guest DJ for our latest Podcast chapter is Spanish producer Bolumar who has released a 4 tracker on the label, his release called Hypnotic Trip EP was out on May 5th and include a remix by Alessio Mereu. Originating from the beautiful and historic Spanish stronghold of Valencia, Jose Bolumar Molina alias Bolumar, has prominently emerged from the city increasingly vibrant underground music scene as one of its most cherished musicians. Complimentary to his natural Spanish elegance and charismatic demeanor, Bolumar brings a very unique and infectious sound; something which truly sets him apart from the rest, the combination of which has ignited his ascension to becoming one of Valencia most promising underground tacticians. Influenced by the likes of Fuse front man Enzo Siragusa, Tsuba boss Kevin Griffiths, and one of Frankfurt hottest exports Vera, to name but a few, Bolumar follows through with a music style very much suited to that of his native city unassuming vibe; minimalistic, deep and techy. With his career commencing during his impressionable teenage years, Bolumar initially established himself through playing experimental gigs at small-time venues and parties in his hometown. It was through playing such gigs that he developed a real attitude for DJing and a raw passion for electronic music. Gaining early recognition for injecting his infectious melodies and creativity into consistently unforgettable sets, this consecutively led Bolumar to gain a well-deserved residency at one of Valencia most revered underground venues, Miniclub. It was here where Bolumar took-hold of the weekly Thursday night event Klinik Music Club, captivating his clubbers and creating a real lasting impression with his intelligently fused selection of deep, dubby house and minimal tech sounds. Having firmly established his capabilities behind the turntables, in 2010 Bolumar attentions turned towards production; three years on those efforts have started turning heads well beyond his local realms, with Bolumar music creating a real buzz amongst his industry peers, both across Spain and Europe.
