Rose Manley and Jo Rowsell cast their eye over one of the most hotly anticipated races of the year, Milano-Sanremo Donne. The last time the race was staged for women was 20 years ago, leaving plenty of intrigue over how it would be approached by this current crop of riders. This season's battle of SD Worx versus Demi Vollering was expected to continue into this race. The Dutch team boasted both World Champion Lotte Kopecky and super sprinter Lorena Wiebes in their line-up, making them the team to beat. With old grudges and new rivalries playing out on the gravel roads of Tuscany, Strade Bianche offered up plenty to talk about in this month's episode of The Cycling Podcast Féminin. Rose Manley and Denny Gray are joined by cycling broadcaster Rebecca Charlton to discuss all the juicy details, plus they look ahead to the return of Milan-Sanremo with a mini-feature about the race's predecessor, the Primavera Rosa. Ever since Demi Vollering's move to FDJ-Suez and Anna Van der Breggen announced her return to the peloton last year, anticipation of a fierce rivalry between the pair has been rising. After Strade Bianche and their first meeting at Setmana Valenciana, it is fair to say that the match-up has already more than exceeded expectations. Van der Breggen has proven to be the only rider in the peloton capable of matching Vollering for power and tactical nous, although Vollering has thus far always come away with the spoils. Strade Bianche also saw former world champion Pauline Ferrand-Prevot take third place, in her first spring Classic since 2018. Plus the race was a welcome showcase for the top riders in the peloton after something of a stalemate at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad which saw a surprise victory for Lotte Claes.  In anticipation of the inaugural Milano-Sanremo Donne, we take a look back at the race's precursor – the Primavera Rosa – which ran for seven editions from 1999 until 2005. The race took place on the last 118 kilometres of the men's Milan-Sanremo, on the same day and included the same Poggio and Cipressa climbs and Via Roma finish. Sir Chris Hoy is a British sporting icon who has battled his way to the top of the Olympic podium multiple times, but little did he know that the toughest battle was awaiting him in midlife. At the age of 47, Chris was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer. In this episode, Chris opens up about the shock and emotion of the first few weeks and months, and how he tried to use all the tools he'd learned from his time as a professional athlete to get through the treatment that was keeping him alive. It was an honour to record this episode. We overuse words such as ‘hero' and ‘inspiration' but Sir Chris Hoy is both. Not only is he one of Great Britain's most successful Olympic athletes (during a record-breaking career as a sprint cyclist, he won six gold medals, one silver medal, and 11 world championships) but he's currently living with a Stage 4 prostate cancer diagnosis. In September 2023, a seemingly routine trip to the doctor's turned into a waking nightmare when he was given between two and four years to live. His beloved wife Sarra was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis a month later. And yet, these two extraordinary people say they are lucky. Olympic cyclist Sir Chris Hoy is calling for more prostate cancer testing after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Prostate cancer can often present without symptoms, and for people like Sir Chris, this can mean it isn't diagnosed until it has spread and become incurable. Unlike breast, bowel, or cervical cancer, there is currently no national screening programme that routinely invites men for prostate cancer testing. Instead, men over 50 can request what's known as a PSA blood test from their GP, but it's not automatically offered. Sir Chris wants that to change and is calling for the test to be made more easily available for men under 50, especially those with a family history of prostate cancer. But, expanding prostate screening is a divisive issue. While it could help detect cancer earlier in some cases, there are potential drawbacks. It's not about the end goal, it's about enjoying the steps along the way. I had the pleasure of catching up with Sir Chris Hoy recently, and it reminded me that he is one of those relatively rare high performers who retain humility and stay truly grounded while enjoying huge success, as he did in winning gold medals at three Olympic Games. So many people put so much stock in the outcome alone, and what it supposedly says about them as a person, that they don't enjoy what they do for its own sake.
