August 1, 2007. Powder Springs, Georgia. After not being heard from for over 30 hours, 46-year old Jane Kuria and her two daughters - 19-year old Isabella and 16-year old Annabelle - are found bludgeoned to death inside their home. Jane's eight-year old son, Jeremy, and her eleven-year old nephew, P.K. Thande, are also severely beaten and left comatose, but while they wind up surviving their injuries, they are unable to provide much information about who attacked them. Since the Kurias originally hailed from Kenya and had been seeking asylum in the United States, investigators explore a number of different scenarios, including the possibility of some family friends being responsible for the murders, but the case is never solved. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a horrific and baffling crime known as the Kuria family murders.  Additional Reading: https://unsolvedmysteries.fandom.com/wiki/Kuria_Family https://unsolved.com/podcasts/the-kuria-family-murders/ https://unsolved.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/108-The-Kuria-Family-Murders-Web-Final.pdf https://www.gwinnettdailypost.com/archive/police-question-survivor-of-attack-that-killed-3-in-georgia-home/article_aa17ad8f-fd8d-5827-b222-886708c23c60.html https://www.wave3.com/story/6875529/police-searching-for-suspect-in-attack-that-killed-3-in-georgia-home/ https://mshale.com/2007/09/06/detectives-progress-on-murders-of-kenyan-mother-daughters/ https://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/02/us/02attack.html https://www.11alive.com/article/news/investigations/gone-cold/gone-cold-a-family-massacred-a-case-left-cold/85-511736512 https://www.fox5atlanta.com/news/powder-springs-community-rallies-around-teen "The Trail Went Cold" will be appearing at the True Crime Podcast Festival, taking place at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Boston North Shore in Boston, Massachusetts on July 18-20, 2025. May 28, 1981. Milwaukee, Wisconsin. 30-year old Christine Schultz, the ex-wife of police officer Fred Schultz, is shot to death inside her home and Fred's current spouse, Laurie “Bambi” Bembenek, is soon charged with the crime. Even though Laurie insists that she was framed by the police and the evidence against her was planted and fabricated, she is convicted of first-degree murder and receives a sentence of life imprisonment. In 1990, Laurie manages to escape from prison with the assistance of her new spouse before they are recaptured in Canada, but even though Laurie continues to maintain her innocence, she is allowed to walk free after agreeing to enter a plea of “no contest” to the crime. Was Laurie “Bambi” Bembenek actually responsible for the murder of Christine Schultz or was she the victim of an elaborate frame-up job? Last week, in Part One of our series, we chronicled the events in this case leading up to Laurie Bembenek's prison break. This week, we will share the rest of the story and provide our theories and analysis about this very controversial and sensationalistic case. Today, we're revisiting a conversation with a guest who has profoundly impacted me and, I believe, represents the true potential of hospitality. Craig Poole, a three-time Hilton Connie Award winner and the American Hotel and Lodging Association's General Manager of the Year, has set an incredible example at the DoubleTree in Reading, Pennsylvania. His hotel excels financially and has redefined what it means to be a community cornerstone.Craig's story offers a powerful reminder of how hospitality can drive transformation—not only for guests but for employees and entire neighborhoods and cities. His work shows us that when we genuinely care for people, we inspire loyalty, change lives, and create long-lasting impacts on communities. Craig hires locally, often bringing in people who others might overlook, including those with past challenges. His approach to “second chance hiring” and deep community engagement has turned his hotel into a place of opportunity and pride for the city.Listen in to hear how Craig has created a culture of selflessness, where “loving people where they're at” goes hand-in-hand with business success. His vision is about more than just a hotel; it's about creating a place where people feel a part of, valued and supported. His words remind us that hospitality is about more than beds and meals—it's about hearts and lives. Craig's journey shows us that when we lead with purpose and stand behind our people, we create waves of positive change that ripple far beyond the walls of our businesses. Also see: Follow Me and I Will Be Behind You (Craig's documentary)Send Josiah a text A few more resources: If you're new to Hospitality Daily, start here. Inspired by recently unveiled controversial portraits of King Charles III and Catherine, Princess of Wales, Brandon Zech and Gabriel Martinez discuss portraiture's privileged place in art history. "For the entire history of portraiture, the goal has been to depict the person as they are because it has been the only way for us to be able to tell how people looked. But now that images of famous people can be ubiquitously found on the internet, artists have a little more freedom to play with the idea of what a portrait is." Seven people have died at a hotel-turned-shelter for Denver's homeless people since it opened in December, according to the city's medical examiner. The former DoubleTree by Hilton hotel serves hundreds of homeless people under a campaign by Mayor Mike Johnston to move 2,000 individuals out of the city's streets by the end of this year. That figure counts the 1,000-plus homeless individuals who moved into temporary shelters, including at the former DoubleTree hotel, last year. The hotel, located at 4040 Quebec St., came under scrutiny following a double homicide on March 16, when police said two victims were found dead inside a room. The medical examiner's office later determined they were shot to death. In addition, five other deaths occurred at 4040 Quebec St. since Jan. 19, according to the data obtained by The Denver Gazette via a public records request. The causes of death remained unclear, though the medical examiners said it is awaiting toxicology results. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/darien-dunstan3/message

December 6, 1991. Austin, Texas. After responding to a fire at a local yogurt shop, the authorities discover the burned nude bodies of four victims who have all been shot in the head: 17-year old employees Eliza Thomas and Jennifer Harbison; Jennifer's 15-year old sister, Sarah Harbison; and Sarah's 13-year old friend, Amy Ayers. Nearly eight years later, investigators arrest four suspects for the murders and while the charges against two of them are eventually dropped, the other two – Robert Springsteen and Michael Scott – had confessed to the crime, so they wind up being convicted at their respective trials. However, both men's convictions are overturned due to civil rights violations and forensic testing reveals the presence of DNA on the victims which does not match any of the alleged perpetrators. In 2009, the charges against the two defendants are dismissed and they are released from prison, but there are no conclusive answers about who actually committed the crime. This week, “The Trail Went Cold” will be releasing the first part of a special two-part episode about one of our most highly requested cases: the Austin Yogurt Shop Murders. January 28, 1981. Bossier Parish, Louisiana. The decomposed body of a young woman is discovered in the woods next to a remote logging road. Suspicion turns towards John Chesson, the man who reported the discovery of Carol Ann's body to the police, as his daughter was certain that Carol Ann had stayed at their family's residence prior to her death and Chesson would go to prison for murdering another person several years later. May 10, 1967. Hannibal, Missouri. 13-year old Joey Hoag, his 11-year old brother Billy Hoag, and their 14-year old friend Craig Dowell leave their homes to explore some caves, but never return. Even though a massive search effort is conducted of all the caves in the area, they fail to turn up any trace of the boys or evidence of what happened to them. Over the years, there is speculation that a construction project caused Joey, Billy and Craig to become trapped in a cave or that they may have been abducted and murdered by an unknown third party, but there is no conclusive evidence to support any scenario. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the tragic unsolved disappearance of three children who have become known as “The Lost Boys of Hannibal”. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Hannibal Police Department at (573) 221-0987. May 26, 1989. Kelowna, British Columbia. While taking a lengthy backpacking trip through Canada, 20-year old British national Charles Horvath cashes a cheque at a bank, but soon vanishes without a trace. After not hearing from him for several months, Charles' mother, Denise Allan, travels to Kelowna to perform a search and learns that Charles was staying at a local campground until he abruptly disappeared and left his personal belongings behind. Over the years, there are a number of leads, including an anonymous note which states that Charles was killed at a party before his body was dumped in a lake, but no evidence is found to indicate what happened to him. Did Charles Horvath become a victim of foul play? If not, what actually caused his disappearance? On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we cover an unsolved missing persons case involving a victim who vanished while travelling through our podcast's home country of Canada. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Kelowna detachment of the RCMP at (250) 762-3300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). May 15, 1981. East Chicago, Indiana. Jay Given, a 51-year old attorney and political operative, attends a political fundraiser at the local Elks Club, but is fatally shot through the back of the head while exiting through the building's front doors. While a shell casing and a slug are collected from the crime scene and placed in an evidence drawer at the police station, it is later discovered that the items have been tampered with. The investigation turns towards the town's deputy police chief, John Cardona, who attended the fundraiser, owned a similar firearm to the murder weapon, and had a motive to kill Jay. While a grand jury investigation takes place, the authorities ultimately believe that the evidence against Cardona is not strong enough to file charges. Was John Cardona actually responsible for the murder of Jay Given? Was a cover-up orchestrated to ensure the perpetrator would never be prosecuted? On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore an unsolved case from a town where corruption and political maneuvering were rampant. If you have any information about this case, please contact the East Chicago Police Department at (219) 391-8400. We were honored to be invited to the inaugural celebration of Monster Fest 2023, produced by our good friends Seth Breedlove and his crew at Small Town Monsters. Taking place at the DoubleTree hotel in downtown Canton, OH, the evening of Friday, June 2, saw the premiere of STM's latest documentary, On the Trail of Bigfoot: Land of the Missing, at the historic (and haunted) Canton Palace Theater. Saturday, June 3, was the main event which featured a packed and exciting ballroom full of vendors with the most creative and coolest wares on display, expert researchers, authors, artists, podcasters, filmmakers, speakers, special guests... and then there was us, along with legendary screenwriter Rich Hatem. No question, we loved catching up with friends in our fields and meeting new contemporaries. Still, meeting so many of our wonderful listeners was an even bigger highlight. And we're all fortunate that several generously and bravely shared their stories of paranormal encounters for our live taping in front of an audience, which is what you'll hear on tonight's episode. We hope you'll enjoy this first-of-a-kind show for us and take comfort or trepidation in knowing that when it comes to our weird world, we're all in it together.
