Sometimes it's the music of a thing that really and truly makes it sing....Up for multiple Emmy nominations this year, 'Palm Royale' is yet another fantastic show on Apple+ that you should probably check out as the fantastic Kirsten Wiig leads a fantastic ensemble through the dark corners of high society in 1969. Something that really ties this show together is it's choice and use of music and we had the pleasure to speak with the composer of it all the one and only Jeff Toyne, who happens to be a double Emmy nominee this year not only for music throughout the show but for the opening title sequence (it's actually two categories....who knew?)We talked with Jeff about getting the job, the use of music on the show, what drove him to compose for the screen and so very much more....'Palm Royale; is on Apple+ now.
Back To The Blockbuster is celebrating its two year anniversary and the team is ringing in the milestone by revisiting two films that each of the co-hosts once disliked. In one corner, Gaius didn't care for the 2017 film Mother!, when he first saw the film in theaters. Directed and written by Darren Aronofsky, the film stars Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, Michelle Pfeiffer, Domhnall Gleeson, Brian Gleeson, and Kirsten Wiig. In the film, a young woman finds her tranquil life with her husband at their country home is disrupted by the arrival of a mysterious couple. In the other corner is Jackson, who didn't care for the 2019 film, Us. Directed and written by Jordan Peele, the film stars Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke, Elisabeth Moss, Shahadi Wright Joseph, and Evan Alex. In the film, a woman and her family are attacked by a group of menacing doppelgängers. Will their minds change all these years later on their respective films? Before finding out, the duo covers a bit of news, most notably the ongoing issues with Marvel and their respective movies and TV shows.
When it was clear that a Ghostbusters 3 was never going to happen, Sony rebooted the franchise with Ghostbusters: Answer The Call. The movie stars Kirsten Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones. Besides being well known for their comedy, they are also notably women. And that made some people mad. Despite critical praise, the movie underperformed at the box office. But today, all we care about is what works! And with star making performances from newcomers, and a script jam packed with jokes and gags, we found plenty to celebrate. A few months back Sidey, Dan and Reegs sat down to talk about PAUL (2011), the Simon Pegg and Nick Frost comedy in which two sci-fi fans tour of the USA's UFO heartland crosses paths with an extraterresterrial named Paul. It really was a great episode, probably one of our strongest ever, but unfotunately none of us bothered to press the record button that night so several weeks later we attempted to review it again, occassionally misremembering things and being less confident in our take etc. Having time to think about it again I didn't like it all that much. Paul is just Seth Rogen, Pegg and Frost are lost without Edgar Wright, qouting lines from other iconic franchises in by-the-numbers scenes does not constitute telling jokes in my opinion and there's a slightly sneery and superior pride in the movies atheism, often at the expense of crude jokes about christianity which is really just unnecessary. Just not funny enough given the collective talent here, supervised by SUPERBAD's Greg Mottola and a supporting cast featuring Kirsten Wiig, John Carrol Lynch, Jason Bateman and Jeffrey Tambor. The other guys liked it though so what do I know?

I wonder how long it’ll be before they ban alcohol on aircraft? You have a two pronged problem here of course. On the one hand, intoxicated passengers losing the plot and driving everyone else on board nuts, as well as. The airlines who must find this annoying, also unfortunately being driven by the bottom line, therefore keen on the revenue generated from alcohol sales. Liquor, beer and wine account for more than half of all in flight sales, so that’s a lot of money to turn down. Not all airlines provide or sell alcohol of course, and for many passengers, pre-loading is more of the problem, passengers tanking up at the airport before they even set foot on board the plane. But as we inch ever closer as a society towards less tolerance of bad behaviour, it begs the question: how much longer will drunken antics on board flights be tolerated? The ultimate example of drunken mid-air antics is played out in the hilarious scene by actress Kirsten Wiig in the movie Bridesmaids. Arguably one of the funniest plane scenes ever, it surely wouldn’t have been if it was a real flight and you were a real passenger stuck on it.According to one report, “incidents involving unruly airline passengers” are on the rise. The International Air Transport Association says almost a third of these incidents are alcohol related. And the consequences have a domino effect on many people, from the airline staff, to fellow passengers, to flight crew, to airport officials on the ground at the other end.The question’s been asked; if airlines can ban smoking on board, why can’t they ban drinking? Will they perhaps look at limiting numbers of drinks? But then how does that work if passengers have pre-loaded pre-flight? And what about people who add pills to the mix and only need one vodka to make a dangerous cocktail of intoxication? Inebriated passengers can be dangerous, not only to other passengers, but also to flight safety. Classic example being the passenger who once drunkenly mistook the emergency exit for the toilet door. Not all passengers drink to excess of course, and not all of them are out of control, but as incidents of poor plane behaviour continue to rise, and with alcohol a contributing factor, it makes you wonder how much longer the bar will be open mid-air.

Welcome to episode 41! Eleanor and Jenny from Story Etc return for The Diary of a Teenage Girl, Eleanor’s choice. A 2015 coming-of-age comedy-drama set in the late 70s San Francisco starring Kirsten Wiig and Bel Powley in a breakout role. It follows Minnie’s sexual awakening and creative growth as an artist. Surprisingly explicit it tackles inappropriate relationships in a refreshing, non-judgemental and unapologetic way and features great performances by all the leads. Don’t be fooled by its cover, there is humour but it’s not a quirky indie comedy, in a reversal of the manic pixie dream girl Minnie isn’t defined by saving a lost middle-aged man and she is in control of the sexual situations. Scores [supsystic-tables id=43] There was a lot of love for this from the guests and hosts and The Diary of a Teenage Girl scores 4.2, not quite on the Rolodex of watches but recommended! Dennis welcomes Eliot Laurence to the booth of truth to talk about the movie he wrote, "Welcome to Me" starring Kirsten Wiig that is currently playing in selected theaters across the country, on VOD and on Itunes. Eliot talks about the inspiration for the offbeat story, getting Oprah to let the film use her clips, Kristen's nude scene in the casino, how hard it is to make James Marsden look less dreamy and Wes Bentley soulfully eating a cheeseburger. He also shares the Cinderella story behind getting the movie made, what it's like to walk the red carpet at film festivals, his strategy for reading reviews and the amazing projects he's working on currently. Other topics include: the day job that was hard to leave, the worst job he ever had, writing on The Big Gay Sketch Show, the sudden passing of his friend and comedy partner Stephanie in 2006, a particularly gross on-stage accident and why he loves being a writer. (Dennis's audio is a little distorted at times. Sorry about that, folks. Will get it right next time.)
