This week, we're fixin' to do somethin' dumber than hell but we're gonna do it anyway, as we close out No-Theme-ber by circling back to the coin-flip best movie of 2007, a gravely serious and barbed-wire-taut neo-western crime thriller that the Coens still manage to sneak an enormous amount of low-key goofy comedy into. It's 2007's No Country For Old Men, written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, based on the book by Cormac McCarthy, and starring Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, Tommy Lee Jones, Woody Harrelson, Kelly Macdonald, Garrett Dillahunt, Tess Harper, Barry Corbin, Beth Grant and Stephen Root. It's Hayley's nomination for November's canon consideration as we use the last Friday of the month to induct another classic into the pod pantheon. Plus: J Mo's trip to Gladiator II has us recounting memorable bad audience behavior from our years of going to the theater. If you'd like to watch this week's movie before listening to our discussion, No Country For Old Men is now streaming on both Amazon Prime and Netflix in Canada at the time of publication. Other works referenced in this episode include Wicked, The Stand (1994), The Stand (2020), Station Eleven, Bridesmaids, Ghostbusters: Answer The Call, Super 8, Star Trek Into Darkness, The Fabelmans, The Holdovers, Transformers One, Jack Reacher, Robin Hood (2010), Abigail, Maximum Overdrive, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, The Blues Brothers, The Big Lebowski, Grindhouse, There Will Be Blood, Inherent Vice, W. and Deadpool 2 among countless others. We'll be back next week to kick off another theme month as the last month of 2024 sees the return of A DePalmber to ReMalmber! That's right, we're going back to the well for DePalmber: Part De, which begins next Friday with The Untouchables, and continues with Body Double and our December canon entry, Blow Out. (We'll take a quick break from DePalma to celebrate Shaqmas with Shaquille O'Neal in Blue Chips.) Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

This week, as Ryan Reynolds rides into theatres with the big screen release of I.F., we wind it back a few years to another movie he's in that adds a couple extra letters to that pair: 2017's Life, directed by Morbius helmer Daniel Espinosa, and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, Ryan Reynolds, Hiroyuki Sanada and Ariyan Sanada. It's a space-set creature feature that aims to evoke Alien but doesn't quite hit those same classic heights. Is it still passable? Our hosts are split, as this unseen selection from Hayley's collection was a J Mo rewatch, and the movie plays a bit differently perhaps when you know its twists. Otherwise we're hyperfixated on live pro wrestling and the TV show LOST, so it's a pretty standard week around here. Also, has anyone else noticed that Ryan Reynolds kinda sucks? If you'd like to watch Life before listening to our discussion, it is currently streaming on Netflix in Canada at the time of publication. Other works referenced in this episode include Speed Racer, Party of Five, The Witcher, Expend4bles, Masters of the Universe, The Fall Guy, Jungle Cruise, Ghostbusters: Answer The Call, Love and Basketball, Planet of the Apes (2001), Big Brother Canada, I.S.S., Sunshine, Venom, Deadpool, Executive Decision, The Suicide Squad, Underwater, Passengers, Baby Driver, Rough Night, Hacks, Resident Evil, Starship Troopers, Free Guy, Two Guys A Girl and a Pizza Place, Red Notice, R.I.P.D., and many more. We'll be back next week with our first ever episode recorded live in the same room, as Hayley's come out to the coast to watch Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes in IMAX, and we will have a full reaction recorded almost immediately after seeing the film in theaters. So look forward to that, as well as the week after, when we close out May by inducting Mad Max: Fury Road into the podcast canon. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Ben & Rob marvel at 'Ghostbusters: Answer The Call', the 2016 reboot of the Ghostbusters franchise starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon and Chris Hemsworth. Set in a whole new universe where the original cast briefly appear in different roles but still shout fan service catchphrases, this film was unfairly reviled and bullied by a majority male audience on it's release and since. Does that mean we think the film is good? Well... no, but it's not because of the female cast. The Ghosbusters franchise as a whole had been in development hell for decades; can we unravel the mystery of how this film came to be the fan-reaction disaster it so famously became? What was Dan Aykroyd's original idea for the abandoned 'Ghostbusters 3'? And can Ben and Rob find any silver lining in a film that even the studio wants everyone to forget ever happened?!CONSUUUME to find out all this and much, much more!PLUS! When it was clear that a Ghostbusters 3 was never going to happen, Sony rebooted the franchise with Ghostbusters: Answer The Call. The movie stars Kirsten Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones. Besides being well known for their comedy, they are also notably women. And that made some people mad. Despite critical praise, the movie underperformed at the box office. But today, all we care about is what works! Scott and Tom discuss the film's clear identity crisis, it's use of cameos, the fan backlash, great scenes & performances that get overlooked, the hit & miss homages to the originals, problems with the plot, the use of modern CGI/3D effects and the incredible amount of promising jokes that get self sabotaged. Plus, the clear signs of second guessing with noticeable cuts, edits and rumoured use of costly reshoots.

Episode 216 - Bad Brew: Ghostbusters: Answer The Call We're guessing you can all remember where you were four years ago when you saw the events that unfolded before our eyes. 2016 is a year that will live in infamy for years to come. We watched the news in stunned silence as we thought to ourselves, “how has our country come to this?” Now four years later, the embarrassment continues for some, while others have embraced, what they consider to be, a new movement. Regardless of which side of the metaphorical ‘aisle' you sit on, there is no doubt that Ghostbusters: Answer The Call has divided us as a nation, and we feel it is our civic duty to once-and-for-all decide if this film deserves the hate that has been spewed at it for four long years. So grab some Chasing Ghosts Double Dry-hopped Double-hazy IPA from Epic Brewing, and join us as we discuss, what is hands down, the most outrageous thing to happen to our country in the year 2016. When there's something strange in the neighborhood, who ya going call? Ghostbusters! And these ladies had better answer the call, cause we have a ghost problem. Our complaints about this movie have little to do with the fact that it is an all-female cast, well one of us as a problem with one cast member. Why on Slimers greenback is this movie not a sequel or even acknowledge the other movies? This was a huge misstep for this franchise.

This movie was Ghostbusters: Answer The Call starring Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Chris Hemsworth and Directed by Paul Feig. Reboots. The internet loves 'em. Especially when the reboot makes changes to the source material. Everyone says collectively "hmm…that's a really interest choice, I am looking forward so seeing that." Then we go see the movie and afterwards everyone has a pleasant, polite conversion about whether they liked it or not. Yup, that's the internet we know and love. As you know, a couple years back Sony gave Paul Feig the Ghostbusters franchise to play with and he said "all the Ghostbusters are women now" and the internet said "oh, neat!" and we never spoke of it again…until now. If the level of sarcasm in this post were a Twinkie it would be thirty-five feet long and weigh approximately six-hundred pounds. That's a big Twinkie. On with the show!

How can exposition twist your story in new directions? In the second part of Draft Zero's two-part episode on "Exposition", Stu & Chas take an even deeper look at this notoriously challenging part of screenwriting. For many stories there are pre-existing facts (or given circumstances) that need to be communicated to an audience, and often we rely on dialogue to do it. But exposition can do more than just communicate, it can serve as dramatic revelation that twists a story into a new direction or provides an emotional payoff - or both!. So how do great writers make exposition work for the story, rather than just tell audience stuff they need to know? And how can writers go wrong? To that end, we look at GONE GIRL, SHUTTER ISLAND, GHOSTBUSTERS: ANSWER THE CALL, THE MATRIX, THE MATRIX RELOADED, and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. Audio quotations are included for educational purposes. It should go without saying but in case you missed it SPOILERS AHEAD. Even though there are two fantastic filmmaker commentaries on the extended cut of the film, we've got sort of a "pseudo-commentary" of sorts for you. This isn't scene specific, but Troy and Chris talk about the additions and the changes in the extended cut, as well as what the two hours of deleted and alternate scenes have revealed with the release. And while it's not a proper, in-sync, scene-specific, it does match up to the film Dark Side of the Moon style if you start the episode around the same time as the podcast!

The reboot of Ghostbusters has been one of the most hotly debated reboots that anyone can remember with horrible trailers leading to angry rants coming from both sides as things got super heated and rumour mills ran wild. But is the movie any good? The new Ghostbusters face a ghost invasion of Manhattan, that leads to paranormal enthusiasts Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) and Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy), nuclear engineer Jillian Holtzmann (Kate MCKinnon), and subway worker Patty Tolan (Leslie Jones) band together to stop the otherworldly threat. Highlights of the film: - The first 5 minutes which highlight the super talents of Zach Woods (the best 5 minutes in comedy of the year) - Kate McKinnon stole the show out of the 4 Heroines - she is a superstar - Cameos from old favourites Lowlights of the film: - Over use of Chris Hemsworth - Poor development of villain and his motivations - Over use of CGI - Poor soundtrack Score: Karlos 6.5/10 Jono 5.5/10 It's okay, and no where near the train wreck described. If you are die-hard Ghostbusters fan you will not like it, if you liked the Real Ghostbusters cartoon or other Paul Feig Films you will like this film. it has similar short comings to other recent reboots which hark back to past too much which just reminds you that the reboot is just not as good as the original. The first 5 minutes with Zach Wood are woth the price of admission alone. Whoever was responsible for the film trailers is never to create a trailer again! All this heartache over not too much really. The film is okay ... not great ... but okay.

[School of Movies 2016] To get a really good meta conversation going wherein we still managed to focus on the movie for what it was rather than what we wanted it to be we recruited Bob "Moviebob" Chipman. Maybe the most anticipated follow-up since Star Wars and maybe the least wanted reboot, New Ghostbusters had some enormous boots to fill and an immense amount of people to prove itself to. Considering one of the possibilities mooted since 1989 and the deflating balloon that was Ghostbusters 2 was Adam Sandler and his wretched cronies squeezing into the overalls to bust ghosts with all the enthusiasm and respect for the source material that they brought to Pixels this movie could have been far, FAR worse!
