This episode is packed full of six fantastic women, from the stars of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One to a programmer for the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, which Girls On Film will be attending on July 3rd 2023. Host Anna Smith's first guest is Susanna Fogel, the co-writer of Girls On Film fave Booksmart, and now a director on the miniseries A Small Light. The series stars Bel Powley as a Dutch woman who sheltered Anne Frank's family during World War II. Susanna discusses Bel Powley's character and how she wanted a female character who was an ‘everywoman' and not afraid to fight for what was right, going against the canonically ‘strong woman' trope. Next, we find out more about the film festival in the pretty Czech town of Karlovy Vary. Programmer Anna Korinek talks about the diverse range of filmmakers the festival is championing and the platform it provides to underrepresented countries. She als shares how the public can get involved by attending screenings or tuning in online to KVIFF.TV. Finally, Anna Smith chats to the four main female stars of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One: Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Vanessa Kirby and Rebecca Ferguson. They discuss the relative complexities of the female characters and ask whether action movies are making progress in terms of gender. They also talk about working with Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie, otherwise known as “McQ”. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One is in UK cinemas 12th July 2023. Masih Alinejad, Iranian American journalist, women's rights campaigner and a Time Woman of the Year 2023, is an outspoken critic of the Iranian government. She joins Anita to talk about her fight for women's rights in Iran. ‘Just Saying' is a memoir by the bestselling author Malorie Blackman, former Children's Laureate, best known for her Noughts & Crosses series for young adults. Malorie received eighty-two rejection letters before she finally found a publisher. Seventy published books later it is no exaggeration to say that Malorie Blackman has changed the face of British literature forever. Malorie joins Nuala to discuss her life and works. 650 years ago a woman we only know as Julian of Norwich produced a book which challenged the ideas of the time about sin and suffering. It presented a radical vision of love and hope that “All Shall Be Well and All Shall Be Well and All Manner of Things Shall be Well”. We hear from a listener, Sophie, about the words that she turns to for motivation and encouragement. Blended families are created for all sorts of reasons. Because of break-ups or the death of a parent, through fostering or adoption. Kate Ferdinand, previously Kate Wright of The Only Way is Essex fame, married the former footballer Rio Ferdinand in 2019, four years after his first wife Rebecca and mother of their three children, had died. As a new step mum she struggled partly because she felt very alone and that no-one understood what she was going through. But there was also very little out there to help someone in her situation – the step-parenting parts of books and websites were tiny, she says. Kate has now written her own book - How to Build a Family. She joins Anita to discuss her experiences. Most of us are familiar with the story of Anne Frank, the young Jewish girl who wrote a diary while hiding from the Nazis with her family, in Amsterdam during the Second World War. You are probably less familiar with the name of the woman who agreed to keep them safe in those secret attic rooms. Miep Gies was Otto's secretary, and when they were eventually located and sent to their deaths, it was Miep who found Anne's diary and kept it. A new TV series tells the whole story from Miep's perspective, and she is played by the British actor Bel Powley. Bel joins Nuala to talk about playing an ordinary woman who displayed extraordinary courage. Plans have been announced to allow more patients to use high street pharmacies for some common drug prescriptions and routine tests to ease the pressure on busy GPs. Pharmacies are being asked to take on the prescribing of drugs for seven common ailments, including sore throats, earaches, shingles and urinary tract infections or UTIs. Women are up to 30 times more likely to get a UTIs than men. Half of women will have at least one in their lifetime and 20% will have more than one. So is easier access for women for UTI treatment a positive move? Mary Garthwaite, a former consultant urologist and chair of the Urology Foundation joins Nuala to discuss. As voters in Thailand head to the polls on Sunday for a general election, who are the frontrunners and what are the issues that female voters care about? Women played a key role in the 2020 pro-democracy protests and many are seeing the election as a way to challenge the power of patriarchal institutions such as the military and the monarchy. The current Prime Minister has been trailing behind opposition candidates in the polls, including Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who gave birth just two weeks ago. Nuala is joined by Jonathan Head, the BBC's South East Asia correspondent, to discuss. We hear the next in our series about how relationships are changed and put under strain when life happens. Zoe and James talk about how 'Ed' which is what they call Zoe's eating disorder has affected them since they got together as a couple when they were at school. Zoe's anorexia was 'atypical' - her weight wasn't low but she was in the grip of anorexia, all the behaviours and disordered thinking were there  - her body was under terrible stress and she was regularly collapsing. Only James was really aware of what was going on, a fact that put their relationship under pressure. Jo Morris went to meet Zoe and James in Lincolnshire and they tell their story. What was your experience with theatre when you were at school? Was there that one show you saw that inspired you and that you'll never quite forget? Playwright Hannah Lavery and writer and actor Sarah Middleton have recently taken to the stage with their respective plays, Protest, and SHEWOLVES, which are aimed at teenagers and ensuring that young women's voices are heard on the stage. They join Nuala to discuss the impact theatre can have on young people. Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Hanna Ward

Marielle Heller's sister had gifted her the diaristic graphic novel “The Diary of a Teenage Girl: An Account in Words and Pictures” by Phoebe Gloeckner, and Heller instantly connected with it. She adapted it into a play and then, with Gloeckner's blessing and film rights, into a script. With the help of The Sundance Institute, Heller built the cast and team of creatives that would help her bring her vision to life. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Coming of Age Debuts series with Heller's 2015 film The Diary of a Teenage Girl. Does watching The Diary of a Teenage Girl feel like we're reading a diary? It's funny how the diary in the film is an audio one, recorded by Minnie, our protagonist and titular teenage girl. Is it weird that she's an artist always using her hands but recording an audio diary? A bit. That being said, it's not a gripe of ours at all, just something we noticed. We really connected with this story of Minnie coming into her own sexuality and figuring out what that means, even if it's not always in the best ways. Still, what Heller and Gloeckner give us (along with the stellar lead performance by Bel Powley) is a complicated character taking her own complicated path to figuring herself out, at the end of which we've seen true growth. It helps that Alexander Skarsgård plays opposite her, even if it is a bit... shall we say awkward?... that they connect given that he plays her mom's boyfriend and definitely someone who consciously makes the choice to sleep with a minor. But that allows for a conversation about finding your own sexuality, and how complicated that window of time is when you have your own sexual awakening, which almost always is before the official age of the adult label of 18. And certainly Minnie isn't shying away from sleeping with boys her own age either. We also love Kristen Wiig, Christopher Meloni, and the rest of the cast. The look captured by cinematographer Brandon Trost, production designer Jonah Markowitz, and costume designer Carmen Grande (not to mention hair and makeup) bring this world to life. It's a fantastic film, albeit a challenging one, but one worth watching and discussing. Check it out then tune in. The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins! Bad Dads Film Review

As impossible as it is to imagine if all you ever do is listen to his razor sharp mental gymnastics and displays of intellectual acuity on the podcast, but Bad Dad Dan can from time to time be forgetful so it wasn't completely clear to me at first whether this week's Top 5 Ice was chosen despite having the similarly themed Snow selection by Dan himself only a few weeks back. And hopefully whilst you ruminate on that shock revelation about the reliability or otherwise of Dan's memory, it will distract you from the fact that I don't actually have a proper way to end this paragraph. THE KING OF STATEN ISLAND is in some ways a very conventional Judd Apatow film: aspiring tattooist and self-medicating slacker Scott Carlin (Pete Davidson) is an acerbic 24-year-old with delayed onset adulthood. When firefighter Ray (Bill Burr) begins dating his mother (Marisa Tomei), Scott struggles to accept their relationship whilst finally being forced to confront the death of his father, also a firefighter, who died in action heroically attempting a dangerous rescue. Apatow's body of work often places male protagonists with arrested emotional development in situations of extreme life crises, but this is an unusually poignant and moving story arc, made even more authentic and real when you realise that Davidson's own fireman father died during 9/11. An honest and real, if not always likeable, depiction of someone with depression and anxiety processing real-life trauma, the movie finishes with just enough hope to feel uplifting without being corny. Excellent support from Maude Apatow and especially Bel Powley levels out what is a male-heavy cast which also features a great turn from real life former firefighter Steve Buscemi.  Dan picked THE LOUD HOUSE on his daughter's recommendation, so we watched two episodes "Left in The Dark" and "Get the Message". 11-year-old Lincoln Loud is desperate to watch the live season finale of his favourite tv show about the Academy of Really Good Ghost Hunters (ARGGH) but as the only boy in a family of eleven, he'll have to come up with a way to occupy all ten sisters before he can commandeer the TV. An instantly relatable premise turns out to be a great way to introduce the siblings, with each character getting an early  chance to make an impression and some wholesome values on display as whilst the siblings fight it's clear that they respect, love and look after each other which is especially important given that the unexplainedly absent parents are almost certainly drug addicts or dead. The show has extremely strong representation which is something that we like to see with an interracial gay married couple, a trans character and a bisexual. Bit of everything really, so that's nice. Continuing the long tradition here at Bad Dads of finding out that art we like has been made by people of dubious character, writer Chris Savino was Me Too'd like so many other pieces of sh*t we have talked about on the pod. What a majestic world we live in.We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Try us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review or on our website baddadsfilm.com. Until next time, we remain... Bad Dads

Sam Cheung, Carlyn Greenwald, and Ivan Vukovic, three regular everyday Americans, sit down to talk about Julian Jarrold's 2015 film A Royal Night Out, starring Sarah Gadon, Bel Powley, Jack Reynor, Rupert Everett, and Emily Watson. Together, they break down all the bad accents, attempt to decode the confusing character motivations, and try to remember the last movie that they saw in a theater. Table Manners with Jessie and Lennie Ware

Now that we can record outside, it was a pleasure to have over the treasure that is Naomi Scott for a Tuna Nicoise salad and Orange & Almond cake.We first met at a Vogue x Tiffany fashion party for the BAFTAs and I adored her. Everyone knows her for playing Princess Jasmine in the Aladdin remake, but now she has turned her hand to fictional podcasting, producing and starring in 'Soft Voice' alongside Olivia Cooke and Bel Powley. It's fab. Naomi talks about growing up as the Pastor's daughter, her Nan’s cooking and early memories of making Chapati's together. She also talks about her (very handsome) husband who she met at 16 at church and growing up surrounded by gospel music in Hounslow. By the way if you haven't heard her voice, you will soon. It's incredible. We agree that Naomi has good table manners and I believe she is the first guest to list a banoffee pie as her last dessert (made by cousin Hannah). Great choice!!! Lennie can't get a word in edge ways (sorry mum), we loved her coming over! Xx See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Talk about a meteoric rise in the Hollywood! Naomi Scott’s star power went through the roof when she was cast in the 2017 Power Rangers movie and since, she’s starred alongside Kristen Stewart in the Charlie’s Angels remake and became a Disney princess courtesy of the live-action Aladdin. That’s already a lot to discuss right there, but there is so much more to Scott’s experience in the industry thus far and it all contributes to continuing to prove her promise in the business and her passion for her craft while also highlighting that she’s just a downright lovely individual to have an hourlong chat with! Scott joined us for an episode of Collider Ladies Night in honor of the release of her brand new podcast/audio series Soft Voice. Scott leads as Lydia, an all-star estate agent who seems to have it all - a thriving career, a barrister boyfriend and then some. Lydia attributes much of her success to the voice in her head, Soft Voice, played by Bel Powley. One day, Soft Voice vanishes and is replaced by Dark Voice (Olivia Cooke) who’s absolutely had it with the rigid, straight and narrow lifestyle Soft Voice created. Check out this edition of Ladies Night to hear all about how Scott was first discovered by Kéllé Bryan, what it was like for Scott when Terra Nova was cancelled, joining the Power Rangers film franchise, becoming Jasmine in 2019's Aladdin, getting cut out of The Martian and so much more! In this episode of the Roald Dahl Retrospective, Patricia, Arun, and special guest Eli "TheHeroofTomorrow" Stone discuss about the 2016 BBC two-part animated TV movie Revolting Rhymes based on the 1982 book of the same name starring Dominic West, Rob Brydon, Tamsin Greig, Rose Leslie, Gemma Chan, Bertie Carvel, David Wailliams, Isaac Hempsey Wright, and Bel Powley. The story adapts from Roald Dahl's interpretations of Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, The Three Little Pigs, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Cinderella. The plot focuses on a wolf wanting to get revenge on Little Red Riding Hood as she killed his nephews by eating her two young children. Revolting Rhymes was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short, but lost to Dear Basketball written and narrated by the late Los Angeles Lakers basketball player Kobe Bryant and animated by legendary Disney animator Glen Keane. It received mixed to positive reviews from critics calling it a short, charming film that captured the essence of Roald Dahl's stories, but not as memorable as the other animated adaptations. What do Patricia, Arun, and Eli think of the film? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/old-school-lane/support

That's right, it's a new year and another new episode of The Flickcast. Let's keep it rolling! Even though we've dropped a few episodes this year already, we never really got a chance to say "Happy New Year" yet (or did we?). So anyway, here it is . . . and what a new year it's turned out to be. Things are definitely looking up! On this week's show Chris and Joe go deep into the new Marvel/Disney+ show WandaVision and discuss their personal theories about the characters, what's happening on the show and what's with those weird commercials. They also talk about Sam Esmail's upcoming version of Battlestar Galactica, more on The Expanse (which is having an amazing season), why other shows like Supernatural and Stargate had such long runs, upcoming movie and TV versions of Dungeons & Dragons and what the hell happened with Game of Thrones.  Picks are also back this week with Joe choosing the show Letterkenny, which is now on Hulu, and Chris picking the Judd Apatow 2020 film The King of Staten Island with Pete Davidson, Marisa Tomei, Bill Burr and Bel Powley.  It's another big show. Let's keep 2021 going in the right direction. Thanks for listening! WARNING: This episode may contain discussions about COVID-19, mental health and quarantine. This was one of Todd's brain storms. I had seen the trailer and I still had no idea what this was. I am not a huge Pete Davidson fan. His likeability quotient is not high. Everything I've seen him in he plays a character that is confrontational, awkward, and most of the time self-loathing. That is not the description of people I want to spend a lot of time hanging out with but I'm thinking maybe he won't be like that in this movie. He is exactly like that in this movie and maybe worse. The movie opens with Scott, played by Pete Davidson in his car going full speed down the road. All of a sudden he shuts his eyes in the middle of traffic in what seems to be a suicide attempt. It is a very tense moment that could make you feel sorry for someone who has come to this point in their life, making you sympathetic of Scott. The fact that he is willing to kill a fair number of innocent people leaves him looking like a selfish jerk. And it only gets worse from there. Scott at 24 is happy to sit in the basement with his other loser friends smoking pot all day, every day. He has a sweet, sometimes girlfriend Kelsey, played by Bel Powley, who he treats like crap.    He has an ambitious younger sister Claire, played by Maude Apatow, who is graduating high school and starting college, which makes him look like even more of a loser. His mother Maggie, is played by Marisa Tomei and she is fantastic. Scott has no redeeming qualities, and has never made a good decision in his life. He wants to be a tattoo artist and open a restaurant where you get tattoos while you eat. He actually tattoos a 9 year old kid just for the heck of it. This does not go over well with the kids father Ray, played by Bill Burr. Bill Burr was a surprise, I love his standup, and it turns out, he's also a really good actor.       The storyline mirrors Pete Davidson's life in more than a few ways. In the movie Scott's dad was a firefighter that died on a call when he was 7. Pete's dad was a firefighter that died on 9/11 when Pete was 7. Pete's dad was named Scott. Both movie Scott and real life Pete spent their early lives as drug addicted losers. They both suffer from depression and Crohn's disease. You really want to give Scott a break and hope the best for him but he just won't let you.       The movie is a long 2 hours and 12 minutes, rated R for language, drug use and sexual content. It's also Rated R for really depressing.       Now that is the bad news. The good news is, the surrounding cast that I mentioned, along with Steve Buscemi who actually was a New York firefighter, plays a New York firefighter, are all excellent! And as depressing and long as the movie was, the last 22 minutes almost made me glad I watched it. Appatow does a great job in making this movie seem like real life. No great big moment that makes Scott's life turn completely around. No epiphany, but an ending I was very satisfied with. I still wouldn't want to hang out with Scott, but I wound up being glad he opened his eyes when he was driving the car.       The question is, do you spend $20 to rent this and sit through the first 115 minutes to get to the last 22? Maybe you invite 4 people over and it's only $4 apiece. Or you just say to hell with it. Your call.        My Score: 1 Bud for the first 115 minutes, 4 Buds for the last 22 minutes.
