If you're the type of person who slows down to see a multi-car pileup, you'll love the listener mail in this week's Telegraph. Our 100th episode of Shat on TV: Westworld examines the link between Dolores and Mexican independence, sympathy for Serac, things the Season 3 finale did well, and reasons why viewers felt betrayed by HBO. Things get downright brutal, Big D reads the McDonald's gourmet menu, Ashley basks in plot holes, and Gene argues that Dolores and Caleb had First World Problems. While the Internet grumbles about the Season 3 finale, the Shat Crew gets down to business asking tough questions in an effort to find Westworld's core: Did Dolores have a master plan? Why hide the key inside one of the world's most wanted men? And who's really dead? This Deep Dive, covering Episode 8, "Crisis Theory," also rounds up plot holes, questions Rehoboam's omniscience, puzzles over why Lawrence was selected, and theorizes about why Neo-Los Angeles high-rises are exploding. We also get into characters finally getting their propers, how tiny Aaron Paul really is, Charlotte turning mega-heel, and different ways to watch "Westworld." Plus, there's fresh Man in Black tinfoil and an invitation to play Mortal Kombat X. "Holy Guacamole!" cries Ashley Schafly as Westworld's season finale kills off key characters, does some serious soul-searching, and depicts the quietest of riots. "Crisis Theory" felt more like springboard into a distant Westworld Season 4 than an end to Season 3, but that's not to say it wasn't full of big answers about Serac, the Man in Black, Charlotte, Dolores, Maeve, Rehoboam, and Caleb. Plus, Bernard finally got the episode he deserved, and tons of dudes got shot in the foot. "Westworld" listener mail this week focuses on why William thinks he's "the good guy," whether host pearls are irreplaceable, how bad a mom Charlotte was, how to pronounce Serac (again), and the season's biggest reveal: Big D is a robot. This Telegraph, covering Episode 6 of Season 3, also features email about the book young William was reading, a cryptic conversation between the Man in Black and Robert Ford, and the possibility Westworld has jumped the shark. Listener Ken L. writes in with legal jingles, a caller might be a serial killer, and Ashley informs us HBO has approved a Season 4. Listen to more great music from Simon: www.soundcloud.com/simonsteric Westworld Episode 6 Summary:Serac recovers Martin's pearl and places it in the Warworld simulation, while Maeve is also returned to the simulation to question Martin about Dolores' plans while a new body is made for her. Serac also orders two other hosts—Hector and one other—be made. Charlotte tries to prevent Serac from seizing control of Delos and resorts to poisoning the Delos board and stealing the host data from Delos' servers. She destroys Hector's pearl during her escape. Cherlotte tries to run with her son and ex-husband, but Serac has them killed with a car bomb; a disfigured Charlotte survives. Bernard and Ashley locate Serac's facility in Mexico, where they find William. William has been subjected to an experimental alternative reality therapy where he confronts and kills previous versions of himself, coming to realize he is the "good guy". Maeve's pearl is placed in a new body and she watches as the third host emerges from the tank. It only took six episodes, but Gene finally has tinfoil! Find out why he thinks Charlotte Hale was acting weird, and hear Big D's far more plausible explanation. Ashley adds to the mix with a breakdown of William's WWE group therapy, and we round out coverage of Westworld Season 3, Episode 6, by discussing the identities of the hosts being printed at Delos. In this "Decoherence" Deep Dive, the Shat Crew also delves into William's mysterious blood protein, Charlotte's incredible outfit, one particularly familiar orderly, and who was behind the car bombing that shocked us all. What a save! Episode 6 seemed to pump the brakes on all of Season 3's momentum in the opening minutes but finished with a real bang as our Westworld warriors found violent new motivations that set the stage for an explosive finale. Big D loved the William group therapy session, and Ash was intrigued by the changes happening in Charlores. Gene just relished Decoherence's multiple bloodbaths and incredible action sequences starring Tessa Thompson. Going into Tuesday's Deep Dive, the Shat Crew touches lightly on William's blood tracker, the mystery hosts being printed, and how far the Dolori can stray from their maker. Ashley beat-boxing, Gene struggling with the N-word, Big D confusing real life with "Universal Soldier"—this Telegraph edition of Shat on TV is a doozy. "Westworld" Season 3, Episode 5, inspired listeners to write and call in about Caleb's biblical allusions, Rehoboam's limitations, Dolores' missing copy, Stubbs' secret, Maeve's fate, music choices, and HBO's misrepresentation of Brazil. Listen to more great music from Simon: www.soundcloud.com/simonsteric Westworld Episode 5 Summary:Dolores and Caleb escape with Liam with help from Ash and Giggles, and convince him to give his private key so they can escape from Serac's men, which also allows Martin and Bernard to access Rehoboam. Martin sends Dolores files on Serac from Rehoboam before sending every individual on the planet the data and plans Rehoboam has on them, and the world descends into chaos. Ashley arrives to free Bernard, and Martin instructs them to find Serac's facility where he kept high-risk individuals, including Serac's brother, that would have disrupted the system. Martin then sacrifices himself and kills several of Serac's agents in an explosion. When Dolores reports Liam is no longer necessary, Ash kills him for what she had discovered, but reveals there is more to Caleb than he knows. Gene was left wondering, "Why Caleb?" Ashley raised an eyebrow at how Bernard and Stubbs knew so much, and Big D scribbled down a timeline that would make Carrie Matheson proud. Beyond Westworld – An Aftershow companion to the HBO series Westworld
The Absence of Field Analysis Welcome to Beyond Westworld, and boy do we have a future narrative for you… Charlotte Hale is front and center this week as we learn what has been happening over a Delos since the incident in the park. Turns out Serac and Incite have been busy buying up shares to take a controlling interest in Delos. Not only is this happening right under the big wigs noses, but Charlotte is also a SPY! Turns out the S1 storyline of smuggling data out of the park was true but it wasn't to oust the man in black. It was to transmit Delos intel to Incite, but for what purpose remains to be seen. Meanwhile Dolores and Caleb's story picks back up right after the events of episode 1. Looks like either Delos, Incite, or the system is looking for Dolores but Caleb knows better. Caleb and Dolores escape and then she takes him on a Caleb this is your life journey not only looking at his past, but also telling him how Rehoboam has already predicted his future. So he can either let it play out and commit suicide in 10 years, or he can take control and fight back at Dolores' side. Be sure to answer our park satisfaction questionnaire this week down in the comments. Who the HALE is in Charlotte Hale? Will Caleb ever learn the truth of who Dolores is? Will Charlotte learn the truth about who she is? Will we? Tune in next week for another vacation Beyond Westworld! The one-hour drama series is a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the evolution of sin. Is the "real world" just a simulation? Is Francis a fidelity test? What's Incite up to, and why is Gene Lyons so happy? We answer these questions and more in Shat on TV's first "Westworld" Deep Dive of Season 3. Episode 1, "Parce Domine" brought us a Bible lesson, a new face for artificial intelligence, a missing Delos board member, updated opening credits, and a frank examination of personal data. Plus, Big D brings up "Robopocalypse" yet again; Gene laments freedom of choice, and Ashley talks opera. Westworld Episode 1 Summary: "Parce Domine" Three months after the Westworld massacre, Dolores uses a false identity to get close to Liam Dempsey Jr., the son of the co-founder of Incite. Liam is the public face of the company and its flagship program Rehoboam, a sophisticated artificial intelligence, which Dolores is trying to gain access to. Liam knows little himself, but as he is about to reveal the name of one who knows, Dolores is knocked out by Martin, Liam's head of security who discovered Dolores' deception. Martin intends to kill Dolores, but she instead lures him into a trap, which allows her to replace Martin with a host of Martin to get that information. She is wounded in a firefight but rescued by Caleb, a former soldier that is trying to eke out an existence as a construction worker and petty criminal who had seen Martin try to kill her. Westworld Season 3 started off with a bang, literally, as new characters stepped onto the scene, familiar faces got their hands dirty, and HBO reminded us why it's the king of TV production. The sets were amazing, the vision of the future was painstakingly detailed (if not derivative), and nudity was abundant. In this instant reaction episode, we highlight performances by Lena Waithe, Aaron Paul, and Marshawn Lynch; welcome the new "benevolent dystopian" vision laid out by "Westworld;" and theorize on the significance of Incite and Rehoboam. Also, Big D coins the term "Bernard Reverse Valet Mode," Ash draws parallels to "Black Mirror," and Gene drools over the soundtrack. Elsewhere, Bernard stays ahead of a manhunt for him and intends to travel to Westworld, while the Charlotte host takes control of Delos. Maeve wakes in a World War II-themed park with Nazis. This week an inquest found that Cranberries lead singer Dolores O' Riordan died by drowning as a result of alcohol intoxication. The coroner, Dr Shirley Radcliffe, said: “There’s no evidence that this was anything other than an accident. There was no intention, this seems to be solely a tragic accident.” The findings prompted us to discuss the media coverage of Dolores' death at the time, and celebrity deaths in general. Although death is an inevitable part of life, we still don't have the language to discuss it meaningfully - and struggle to both report on it and talk about it in daily life. At this point we'd love to encourage you to listen to "About Death" - a recent episode of Racheal Bland's "You, Me and the Big C" podcast. Racheal died this week after a cancer battle, and the episode will truly change how you think and talk about death. Before Brunch Podcast is the perfect Sunday morning hangover cure. In this episode, Mr. Daniel Babcock and I consider Westworld Season 2 Episode 5, "Akane No Mai." We encounter parallels between (a) Westworld and Shogun World, (b) Dolores' totalitarianism and Maeve's libertarianism, and (c) consider the relationship between archetypes, suffering, and the birth of consciousness. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/alexander-schmid9/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/alexander-schmid9/support
The third episode of Westworld's second season gave us a ton of insight into Dolores' mindset while also making us question everything about Dolores' mindset. In this week's episode we talk about Westworld season 2 episode 2. As always Spoiler Warning so make sure you are all caught up before giving a listen. Though this episode was a tad more straightforward than the first, there are some key things to point out with Dolores' story line as well a returning character or rather characters. Roger treats us to a brain-blasting religious sermon, and Gene takes bets on which characters will succeed or fail And finally, Big D introduces the thought process that made us question reality, stumble upon a massive realization, then completely lose our composure. On this week's show, we talk to Latina icon Dolores Huerta and music legend Carlos Santana. They spoke to me about their new documentary DOLORES that focuses on the impact Huerta and Cesar Chavez had in the life of millions of Latino immigrants in the 60’s in this country. Then we head to Cali, Colombia, that is via Narcos Season 3, and I talk to its Colombian director Andrés Baiz who tells me in a very candid and honest interview about how he wrestles with the dilemma of being a Colombian and filming a cartel show that reopens wounds for many of his people. Also, what is the ultimate fate of the Spanish language in the United States? Will it become Spanglish or will it eventually disappear? Should Univision and Telemundo become English-language networks, should MTV welcome Spanish-language videos and should Miami Latinos stop speaking Spanish so much and embrace English more? New York Times national correspondent, Simon Romero, drops by the show to discuss his new article on the relationship Latinos have with Spanish in the US. Beyond Westworld – An Aftershow companion to the HBO series Westworld
Westworld puts the game into motion as "The Well-Tempered Clavier" sets us up for next week's exciting season finale. On this week's episode, we discuss Maeve's path to independence, Bernard's sad journey, Williams dark passage, and Dolores' final revelation. This is one tense episode as Aaron and Troy discuss everything, including the cornerstone of the human condition, on this episode of Beyond Westworld. Read more... Topics discussed: Why the MIB is really looking for the maze (he wants a game with consequences), what makes the gameplay in Westworld so unsatisfying (there's no Minecraft element to it), Jane's so-crazy-it-just-might-work theory about who the MIB really is (and what the maze really is too!), how many timelines are floating around inside Dolores' head (yes we are finally coming around to the multiple timeline idea), whether it's cheating on your partner if you have sex with a robot (it's more complicated than you might think), how many people are actually robots (it could be everybody), Maeve's incredible new story-changing abilities (she's the ultimate gamer now), the tragedy of loops (and the horror of memory), how Westworld invites viewers to interact with the series like it's a game (and stay up late reading theories on Reddit), and whether there's something inherently limiting about the Western story (maybe we're about to see Futureworld soon?).
This week's Westworld fan mail is bursting with strong theories: Dolores' role as a custom narrative for William, Teddy being based on William, Arnold being the man depicted ushering Dolores toward consciousness, Hector improvising poetry in his blacklisted conversation, and more. Other theories are a little more out there: Logan is Charlotte, Ford is using ghost hosts and Westworld is in space. But no theory brings together the calculated and the crazy quite like Big D's Unified Field Theory of Westworld. Like a novice Wheel of Fortune player, Dick thinks he's got it all figured out with three episodes (and another season) to go. Listen to his rant and let us know if you think Big D is on to something. Or a complete tinfoil asshat. This might be the best episode of LIW Westworld Review ever. Not just yet but for the foreseeable future too. Phoenix West recorded this at 1 AM, just hours before the 2016 presidential election started. He was drunk. He didn't feel drunk but he sure rambled like he was drunk. Not in an incoherent way but in an awesome way. Anyway, he talks about the wild west town, touches more on William being Man In Black (that's why they milk him wearing a white hat in his introduction), the large black cock of the waiter, Thandie Newton's body, that large black cock on the waiter, the lab assistant and how he will never accomplish anything in life, the weird shot of Dolores' on the train where William and Lawrence disappear and then he briefly touches on the large black cock on the waiter. This episode is just the biggest black cock you've ever heard. www.LIWstudios.com Our other shows: Video: American't, Shitty Movie Showdown!, Nic Cage Cast, Hack From The Future Audio: The Phoenix West Show!, LIW Movie Review, LIW The Twilight Zone Review, LIW (Fear) The Walking Dead Review, LIW American Horror Story Review, LIW Westworld Review, LIW Improv Theater
Topics discussed: The state of Dolores' mind (Arnold and a bunch of other things are in her head), Ford's freaky conversation with the MIB (a treat to watch), the economics of Westworld (it's hemorrhaging cash), the economics of the real world (MIB says it's peachy, but the poor med tech Felix is terrified he'll lose his job), the two faces of Lawrence (El Lazo!), what's going on in Pariah (and are the Confederados linked to Wyatt?), how guns work in Westworld (here's what we've figured out so far), why it's important that the bots use GPS (we have to be on Earth, under open sky), and how the two most popular fan theories about Westworld just got nuked (bye bye double timeline).
Craig Carter is joined by his friends Jake Ratliff and Heather Barefoot. They dive deep into episode two “Chestnut.” They discuss Dolores’ midnight stroll (3:20), William and Logan’s arrival at Westworld (5:17), trouble in Delos (17:43), “these violent delights...” (20:39), hats and trains (23:16), The Man in Black and Lawrence (28:20), Maeve and her “faults” (32:11), getting acquainted with the Devil (37:50), William and Logan in the park (41:45), war and historical inaccuracies (42:49), Dolores and Bernard (49:13), 20% more aggression (53:36), Theresa and Bernard and corporate (55:56), Logan stabbing things and making William uncomfortable (58:47), is sleeping with a robot cheating? (1:04:44), the workshop (1:08:25), The Man in Black and Lawrence Part II (1:12:14), Ford and mini-Ford (1:20:06), Bernard and Theresa and coitus (1:23:25), Maeve's nightmare (1:25:42), Dolores' second midnight stroll (1:36:32), Odyssey on Red River (1:37:03), and a new segment: Theory of the Week! (1:42:15).
