That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits
Nick sits down with podcast host David Stern from Eckhartz Press for a nostalgic, laugh-filled conversation about growing up with Saturday Night Live and how the show shaped his sense of humor and creative path. David shares memories from his teenage years glued to the TV, the cast members who left the biggest impression, and why SNL still holds a special place for him decades later. The discussion turns into a countdown of his all-time favorite sketches, including the absurd Royal Deluxe II commercial, the classic Superhero Party sketch with Bill Murray as Superman and John Belushi as the Hulk, and an essential stop at Celebrity Jeopardy featuring Darrell Hammond as Sean Connery and Norm Macdonald as Burt Reynolds, also known as Turd Ferguson. It's an easy, funny exchange between Radio Misfits cohorts that celebrates SNL history, unforgettable performers, and the sketches that still land years later. [Ep 158]
The category is 1990s SNL and the answer is "this comedian was an SNL mainstay, a huge movie star, and an internet comedy pioneer -- plus he played a mean cowbell." Of course the question is "Who is Will Ferrell" -- this week's legend. Thank goodness that Will Ferrell was bored at the prospect of being a sportscaster and hooked up with the Groundlings improv troupe. When Lorne Michaels came looking for players to rebuild the SNL cast back in the late 1980s, Will was ready. Through great character work, sharp impersonations, and just plain silliness Will became one of the most beloved cast members in SNL history and he rode that popularity to a decade of comedy movie hits. Along the way he helped found Funny or Die, a pioneering comedy website. No word if he ever one-upped Sean Connery during a round of Celebrity Jeopardy. As always find extra clips below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Will Ferrell? Can't do a Will Ferrell episode without his most famous SNL sketch -- grab your cowbell and play along. https://youtu.be/cVsQLlk-T0s?si=6PcKygaU9TXf2FGg On SNL when the Jeopardy! theme music played you knew it was time for Celebrity Jeopardy -- and a battle of words was sure to ensue between Will's Alex Trebek and Darrell Hammond's Sean Connery (among others). https://youtu.be/bEghu90QJH4?si=6OsaWEEYzeCfi4RB Will and his writing partner Adam McKay were co-founders of Funny or Die, a website where viewers can vote for their favorite clips. This clip, featuring Will bickering with a 2 year old landlord was an early classic on the site. https://youtu.be/SIdxVR_7ikg?si=Ewrtb5BsEU0Snh42 Anchorman was a wicked take on the glory days of tv news anchors. One bit was how Will's character was tied to the teleprompter and would read ANYTHING. Might want to turn the speaker down on this if you are at work! https://youtu.be/NMXRxNbPvGI?si=Dho1A-YplaNdrDMu
That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits
Nick revisits one of the most uneven and troubled years in Saturday Night Live history — Season 23. On paper, it should have been great: a powerhouse cast featuring Will Ferrell, Jim Breuer, Chris Kattan, Molly Shannon, Cheri Oteri, and Tim Meadows, plus the first season with Tina Fey on the writing staff. But instead, the year was marred by misfires, controversy, and heartbreaking loss. There were dreadful episodes — Sylvester Stallone flopped, Jon Lovitz coasted, Rudy Giuliani was exactly what you'd expect, and audiences were left wondering who Roma Downey was. The deaths of Chris Farley and Phil Hartman cast a long shadow, and Norm Macdonald's firing over his O.J. Simpson jokes only deepened the chaos. Still, bright spots broke through the gloom. Nick highlights the funniest sketches of the season, including Helen Hunt's great monologue with a surprise guest, a classic Mary Katherine Gallagher moment, a hysterical Celebrity Jeopardy featuring David Duchovny's spot-on Jeff Goldblum, and the debut of Tim Meadows' The Ladies Man. A messy, emotional, and unforgettable chapter in SNL's long history. [Ep 147]

It's another week with multiple champions, and for some reason, the Jeopardy! fans are FUMING about it! They complain when a champ wins too many games, but also when they win not enough. But hey, we have a nice time, as we get to meet a slew of new players this week, almost all of whom we like. Ken also basically says "shitpoo" on national TV, the noble "dik-dik" once again appears, and we go very, very deep on Dred Scott. If you want to go deeper on our show, why not donate to the Patreon? By donating $5/month at patreon.com/jeopardypodcast, you'll get a brand-new bonus episode every month, access to our Discord, and MORE! With the Masters almost over, we will have our exclusive coverage of the tournament only available on our Patreon, and last month, Andy Richter joined us to discuss his three appearances on Celebrity Jeopardy! It was a blast and you won't wanna miss it. SOURCE: Missouri Digital Heritage: "Missouri's Dred Scott Case:, 1846-1857" Special thank you as always to the J-Archive and The Jeopardy! Fan. Kamau tells host Rachel Belle about the delightfully different flavor of attention that came with winning Celebrity Jeopardy, how rare it is to find his favorite kind of burrito in California's Bay Area, a region famous for burritos, and how losing a family member means he'll never taste his favorite birthday cake again Watch Rachel’s Cascade PBS TV show The Nosh with Rachel Belle! Kamau Bell has a long and impressive resume, including hosting seven seasons of the CNN docuseries United Shades of America, winning a Peabody Award for We Need to Talk About Cosby, and winning the third season of Celebrity Jeopardy, and he’s about to take off on his “Who’s With Me” standup tour. Kamau wore a T-shirt on TV that read, “Not All Macaroni and Cheeses are Created Equal,” a political message and “insider Black conversation” that he explains to host Rachel Belle. We’ll also learn the true history of mac & cheese in America, a narrative that took 200 years to uncover, with James Beard Award-winning food historian Michael W. Twitty and Gayle Jessup White, a descendant of both Thomas Jefferson and James Hemmings, the enslaved head chef of Jefferson’s Monticello kitchen. Kamau tells host Rachel Belle about his experience traveling to Kenya with Anthony Bourdain, where his unadventurous eating tendencies were seriously challenged, and of course he shares his last meal.
