What does Laylat ul-Qadr really mean — and why has it been reduced to just another night on the calendar? This is not only about reward, but about revelation, destiny, and the kind of night that can change the direction of a life. Listen in as Dr. Abu Talha explains why this night is far greater, deeper, and more urgent than most people realize.

This segment is titled: Embracing the Crescent Moon: The Magic of RamadanRamadan is one of the most profound and beautiful months in the Islamic calendar—a time when over two billion Muslims around the world come together to fast, pray, reflect, and build community. Far more than simply not eating or drinking from dawn to sunset, Ramadan is a spiritual reset button: a month-long journey of self-discipline, gratitude, empathy, and drawing closer to God. It's a celebration of faith that transforms ordinary days into moments of deep meaning and shared joy.Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and one of the Five Pillars of Islam. For 29 or 30 days—depending on the sighting of the new crescent moon—adult Muslims who are physically able fast from just before sunrise (the pre-dawn meal called suhoor) until sunset (the meal that breaks the fast, called iftar). The fast includes abstaining from food, drink, smoking, and intimate relations, but it also means guarding against anger, gossip, dishonesty, and negative thoughts. The goal is spiritual purification, increased devotion, and a heightened sense of compassion for those who go hungry every day. The day often begins with the quiet alarm of the pre-dawn call to prayer, followed by suhoor—a light but sustaining meal to carry people through the hours ahead. Throughout the day, many increase their prayers, read the Quran, give charity, and practice patience. At sunset, the fast is broken—usually with dates and water in remembrance of the Prophet Muhammad's practice—followed by a larger iftar meal shared with family and friends. Special nightly prayers called taraweeh fill mosques with beautiful recitations, and the month reaches its emotional peak during Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Power), believed to be the night the Quran was first revealed. The month ends with Eid al-Fitr, a joyous three-day festival of feasting, new clothes, gift-giving, and gratitude for the strength to complete the fast.Ramadan's roots reach back to 610 CE in the deserts of Mecca, when the Prophet Muhammad received the first verses of the Quran from the angel Gabriel during a period of intense spiritual retreat in the Cave of Hira. That night—later called Laylat al-Qadr—marked the beginning of Islam's revelation.Fasting itself became obligatory about a decade later, after the Muslim community had migrated to Medina. The practice built on earlier traditions of fasting found among Jews and Christians in Arabia, but Islam gave it a distinctive form and purpose: a month-long act of worship open to the entire community, rich and poor alike. The name "Ramadan" comes from the Arabic root meaning “scorching heat” or "intense burning,” symbolizing both the blazing desert sun and the way fasting burns away impurities from the soul.Over the centuries, as Islam spread across continents, Ramadan absorbed beautiful local customs while retaining its core rituals. From the grand iftar banquets of the Ottoman palaces to the quiet devotion of early African American Muslims who fasted in secret, the month has always been a unifying force. Ramadan turns neighborhoods into living tapestries of light, sound, and generosity. Streets fill with lanterns, fairy lights, and colorful decorations. In many countries, people exchange special greetings—“Ramadan Mubarak” (Blessed Ramadan) or “Ramadan Kareem” (Generous Ramadan)—and share food with neighbors, even those who are not fasting.Mosques become community hubs, bustling late into the night with taraweeh prayers that feel like spiritual concerts. Charity surges: food drives, donations, and zakat al-fitr (a mandatory giving before Eid to ensure the poor can celebrate too). Families gather every evening for iftar, turning meals into moments of laughter, storytelling, and reconnection. Al-Qadr[1] القدر, "Power, Fate") is the 97th chapter (sūrah) of the Qur'an, with 5 āyāt or verses. It is a Meccan surah[2] which celebrates the night when the first revelation of what would become the Qur'an was sent down. The chapter has been so designated after the word al-qadr in the first verse. It is mainly about power Summary 1 – The Quran or a divine illumination vouchsafed to Muhammad on the night of al Qadr 2–5 – The night of al Qadr described and lauded [3] Laylat al-Qadr Quran 97 describes Laylat al-Qadr, the "Night of the abundant portion of blessings" in Ramadan on which Muslims believe the Qur'an was first revealed. The night is not comparable to any others in view of Muslims[4] and according to a tradition, the blessings due to the acts of worship during this night cannot be equaled even by worshipping throughout an entire lifetime. The reward of acts of worship done in this one single night is more than the reward of around 83 years (1000 months) of worship.[5] Laylat al-Qadr is referenced in the Quran:[6][4] The "Spirit" mentioned in verse 4 is commonly interpreted as referring to the angel Jibreel (Gabriel). The "peace" referred to is called by Mujahid "security in which Shaytan (Iblis) cannot do any evil or any harm", while Ibn Kathir quotes Ash-Sha'bi as saying that it refers to the angels greeting the people in the mosques throughout the night. Laylat al-Qadr occurs during an odd-numbered night within the last ten days of Ramadan, but its exact date is uncertain; due to the promises made in the chapter and in various hadith. Muslims consider it a particularly good time for prayer, supplication, and repentance to God. This event marks the descent of the first revelation of the Quran to Earth. The official Islamic teaching is that Muhammad received the revelations that formed the Quran piecemeal for the next twenty-three years of his life up until the time of his death. Shia Muslims believe that Ali (the first Shia Imam, and the fourth caliph of the Rashidun Caliphate to Sunnis) had special insight and intimacy with God on this night.[8] VERILY we sent down the Qur'an in the night of al Qadr. And what shall make thee understand how excellent the night of al Qadr is?The night of al Qadr is better than a thousand months.Therein do the angels descend, and the spirit of Gabriel also, by the permission of their LORD, with his decrees concerning every matter. It is peace until the rising of the morn.[7]

Surah Al-Qadr (القدر) is the 97 chapter of the Qur'an. The surah titled in English means “The Power” and it consists of 5 verses.Surah Qadr is also referred to as “power of fate” and it celebrates the night which the first verses of the Qur'an were revealed by Jibreel. This surah also describes significance of Laylat al-Qadr which is the “night of decree” or “night of power” which happens during the last 10 nights of Ramadan, typically an odd-numbered night. The night of Qadr is the night in which the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (SAW). The word ‘Qadr' means “power.” On this night, Allah exhibits his power over everything and is the sole provider. As a result, Laylatul Qadr is an important night in Muslims' calendars. This surah focuses on the “Night of Ordainment,” also known as Laylat al-Qadr, one of three auspicious nights that occur throughout Ramadan. In reality, Allah Almighty revealed the whole of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad (SAW) throughout the night. On this night, Allah Almighty also gives his final approval to all that has transpired over the year. According to Allah Almighty's explanation in this surah, angels will descend to earth on this night to offer believers with peace that will remain till the break of morning. As a result, one night is more significant than a thousand months combined. 1. Inna anzalnahu fee laylati alqadri1. And what will make you realize what the Night of Glory is? 3. Laylatu alqadri khayrun min alfi shahrin3. Reflection delivered on April 27th, 2022 On the 27th night of Ramaḍān, Shaykh Amin was the honored guest panelist for Al Balagh Academy's Webinar: Seeking Laylat al-Qadr and Attaining the Closeness of Allah ﷻ and Love for Rasūlullah ﷺ. Shaykh began with a call for deep reflection and understanding: “Practicing Islam itself is proof that we are connected to the will of Allah ﷻ. For every connection and relationship, we must also appreciate with whom our relationship is…who is Allah ﷻ and who is the Rasūl ﷺ to us, as individuals and as a part of the Ummah.” While recognizing the importance of individual appreciation, in this talk Shaykh Amin highlights the need to establish the appreciation for a communal understanding of Islam and a communal action based plan. “Because we are all in this search and quest for knowledge and for Laylat al-Qadr together, as one whole community.” He shares 3 principles that are some of the first steps in creating love for Allah ﷻ: to understand the Qurʾān, to recite the Qurʾān, and to act upon the Qurʾān. It is through the coming together of these principles that we are shown how to express love for Allah ﷻ and His Prophet ﷺ.
