This highly anticipated 20th installment is signature Berry, an unputdownable tale steeped in real history and locations – including a kidnapped Swedish princess, a precious medieval book with a controversial backstory, unforgettable and atmospheric locations across Stockholm and Sweden, cat-and-mouse spy games involving elite agents from the US and Russia, and so much more. When the younger sister of Sweden's King Wilhelm I is kidnapped, former Justice Department operative, Cotton Malone, is called in to quietly investigate before the public finds out. The ransom demand? An 800-year-old book – the Codex Gigas – the largest illuminated medieval manuscript in the world that has been kept in Stockholm for nearly 400 years. Along the way it has also acquired another more mysterious moniker... The Devil's Bible. But there's a problem: to gain entrance to NATO to protect themselves from an increasingly hostile Russia, Sweden has already agreed to return the Codex Gigas to the Czech Republic to secure their holdout vote towards membership, something Russia will do anything to prevent. It's up to Cotton Malone and his associate Cassiopeia Vitt to locate the king's sister, secure the codex, thwart the Russians and most of all, diffuse what could be an explosive international situation. Trusted allies become hostile enemies, long-standing enemies suddenly shift into partners, and nothing is as it seems. In the end, Cotton and Cassiopeia come face-to-face with the unthinkable, changing both of their lives forever.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

The stars on the rim of the galaxy are going for a ride. They’re bobbing up and down like the horses on a merry-go-round. They’re also rippling outward, away from the center of the Milky Way. The Milky Way consists of a thin disk of stars and gas that spans a hundred thousand light-years or more. For decades, we’ve known that the rim of the disk is warped like the brim of a wide hat. It’s bent upward on one edge, and downward on the opposite edge. A recent study found that stars on those edges are moving along a big wave. Astronomers looked at the locations and motions of more than 20,000 bright young stars logged by the Gaia space telescope. The stars are as much as 45,000 light-years from the galactic center. Gaia found that the stars are bobbing up and down as much as a thousand light-years above or below the plane of the galaxy. And they appear to be sliding outward at thousands of miles per hour. The wave might have been created by a close approach of a smaller galaxy hundreds of millions of years ago. Its gravity disturbed the tranquility of the Milky Way’s outer precincts – sending the stars there for a ride. Under dark skies, the Milky Way is in good view tonight. In early evening, it extends along the body of Cygnus, the swan, in the west-northwest; through M-shaped Cassiopeia, higher in the sky; then down between Orion and the twins of Gemini, in the east-southeast. The stars appear to rotate in the sky, raising the question of how birds can use stars to navigate during migration. Ornithologist Stephen Emlen brought Indigo Buntings to a planetarium, tracking their movements as the simulated night sky changed above them. The buntings oriented themselves using star patterns that appear to rotate the least — especially the North Star, Ursa Major and Cassiopeia.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org.Want more BirdNote? Kovi and Benjamin got together for slice at Jupiter Pizza. They loved the menu - some wood fired pizza options were the Cassiopeia, the Io, Galileo, Gaia, Mercury, Ares, and Triton. As fun as those names are, they pissed off Benjamin something royal. You see, the names are all spacey, yes, but pick a theme! We've got some planets (Ares was the Greek name fo the planet we now call Mars), random moons (from different worlds, mind you), an explorer, a constellation... It's all over the place! The eatery is called Jupiter Pizza - you'd think they'd have, at the very least, four pies named after the Galilean moons Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. Nope! They didn't even refer to pepperoni as 'great red spots' - and that's just off the top of the head! Anywho, this episode was thought up in a pizzeria called Jupiter - so let's talk about places here on Earth named after places in space!

Like the Sun, Rho Cassiopeia is a class G2 star. That means their surface temperature is the same, so they both look yellow. But that’s just about the only thing they have in common. Rho Cass is one of the most impressive stars in the galaxy. And it faces a much more dramatic fate than the Sun does. Rho Cass is a yellow hypergiant. If it took the Sun’s place in our own solar system, it would engulf the four innermost planets, including Earth. It’s about 40 times more massive than the Sun, and hundreds of thousands of times brighter. So even though it’s more than 8,000 light-years away, it’s visible to the eye alone – one of the most-distant stars we can see without help. Rho Cass is nearing the end of its life. That’s made it unstable, so its outer layers puff in and out. The star produces a massive eruption every 50 years or so, and smaller outbursts every 20 years or so. During the last one, Rho Cass blew out enough material to make about 10,000 Earths. And it may be building up to a huge outburst – a supernova. That would blast away its outer layers, with its dead core collapsing to form a black hole. On the other hand, Rho Cass might be massive enough for the entire star to become a black hole – and vanish from sight. For now, though, it’s in good view. It’s high in the north at nightfall, to the upper left of the letter M or W outlined by Cassiopeia. Script by Damond Benningfield
Star clusters line up in the evening sky at this time of year like pearls on a necklace. As the sky gets nice and dark, they climb straight up the northeastern sky. They stretch from the bright star Capella, which is quite low; up through the “W” of Cassiopeia; then to Cygnus, the tail of the swan, high overhead. There’s a good line of clusters because that path outlines the Milky Way – the subtle glow of the disk of our home galaxy. Most of the clusters are classified as “open.” All of the stars in such a cluster were born together, from a giant cloud of gas and dust. But as the clusters orbit the center of the Milky Way, they’re slowly pulled apart. So over time, all the stars in such a cluster go their own way. Perhaps the highlight of this path is the Double Cluster – two clusters in Perseus, just below Cassiopeia. Under dark skies, they’re visible to the unaided eye as a faint cloud of light. Individually, the clusters are known as NGC 869 and 884. They’re about 7500 light-years away. Combined, their stars and gas add up to about 20 thousand times the mass of the Sun. And they’re quite young as stars go – about 14 million years. At that tender age, the clusters haven’t had time to fall apart. And with their great mass, they’re likely to hold together longer than most clusters – perhaps several hundred million years. Tomorrow: the crescent Moon and the “evening star.” Script by Damond Benningfield

A star in Cassiopeia refuses to die. If astronomers are correct, it was “born” from the merger of two corpses. Such a collision usually blasts both stars to bits, but not this time. The combined star survived – also as a corpse. But it may not be completely dead. It’s producing a strong wind – a sign of possible rejuvenation. The star appears to be the remnant of a supernova that was seen in the year 1181. It remained visible for six months. The supernova may have formed from the merger of two white dwarfs – dead stars that are the final act for stars like the Sun. In most cases, such a merger makes the combined stars too massive to survive. The merged object blasts itself to cosmic dust. In this case, though, only a fraction of the mass of the two stars was blasted away. The rest formed a white dwarf heavier than the Sun. It’s the hottest star yet seen – hundreds of thousands of degrees hotter than the Sun. A recent study showed that the star is blowing a “wind” of particles into space at about five percent of the speed of light. The types of particles indicate that nuclear fusion has fired up in a thin layer around the core of the white dwarf – new life for a star that refuses to die. Cassiopeia is in the northeast at nightfall. It looks like a sideways letter W. The possible supernova remnant is near the tip of the bottom left point of the W – about 7500 light-years away. Charles Messier was a comet hunter. But he kept coming across annoying objects that resembled comets. So he compiled a catalog of them to keep both himself and others from wasting time – more than a hundred in all. And 250 years ago tonight, while studying a comet in Cassiopeia, he discovered object number 52 – a star cluster that’s thousands of light-years from Earth. Astronomers have been studying Messier 52 ever since then. Yet they still don’t know all of its details. That includes its precise distance. Measurements made in recent years have ranged from less than 5,000 light-years to more than six thousand. And without knowing the cluster’s distance, it’s hard to nail down its other characteristics. Its age, for example, could range from 120 million to 160 million years. A study a few years ago counted 369 stars in the cluster, although the total’s probably much higher. Many of the stars are crowded in its middle. But some of them are dozens of light-years from there. At the cluster’s edge, stars can be pulled away by the gravity of the rest of the galaxy – reducing the size of this family of stars. M52 is well up in the northeast at nightfall. It’s above the sideways letter W formed by some of Cassiopeia’s brighter stars. The cluster is too faint to see with the eye alone, but it’s an easy target for binoculars. For most Americans, the Milky Way is more of an idea than a reality. Light pollution blocks the view of the Milky Way and much more. So for most, the only way to see the Milky Way is to get out of town – to visit dark locations far from city lights. Fortunately, there are still quite a few places where the skies are dark enough for the Milky Way to shine through. The International Dark Sky Association certifies many “dark-sky” locations – parks, towns, and even entire regions. Such locations have taken steps to ensure that their skies remain dark. They use streetlamps that have a redder glow, which is less troublesome than blue light, for example. They ban certain types of outdoor lighting, and require that other types be shielded so their light goes down, not up. There are about 140 certified sites in the United States. This year alone, the association has certified towns in Texas and Utah, a wildlife area in Michigan, and a large chunk of Oregon. The list includes many national parks, such as the Grand Canyon. And McDonald Observatory is inside one of the world’s largest dark-sky sanctuaries, in West Texas. If you have nice, dark skies, tonight is a great time to look for the Milky Way. At nightfall, it arcs from the “teapot” of Sagittarius, in the south; through the swan, high in the east; and down to W-shaped Cassiopeia, low in the northeast – the magnificent glow of our home galaxy. Betelgeuse grew dramatically fainter a couple of years ago. The supergiant star blasted out a giant blob of gas, which cooled to form a dust cloud that blocked part of the star from view. And a similar star might recently have gone through the same process. RW Cephei is at least 900 times the diameter of the Sun, making it one of the larger stars in the galaxy. It’s also hundreds of thousands of times brighter than the Sun. In late 2022, though, it dropped to a third of its usual brightness. By last summer, it was recovering. Astronomers analyzed some especially sharp images of the star. The pictures showed that it was blobby, with bright and dark regions many times larger than the Sun. The astronomers later found that RW Ceph had grown brighter than usual in 2019. It may have blown out a huge blob of hot gas not long after that. The gas cooled and condensed to form a cloud of dust grains. The cloud moved in front of the star, causing it to fade. As the cloud dispersed, RW Ceph returned to its usual brilliance. The hypergiant star is near the end of its life. It’s expected to explode as a supernova sometime in the next million years or so – just like Betelgeuse. RW Cephei is low in the northeast at nightfall. It’s about halfway between Deneb, the star at the tail of the swan, and W-shaped Cassiopeia. Even at its best, though, you need binoculars or a telescope to see it. Script by Damond Benningfield
So it's come to this: the conclusions (perhaps?) of all three Paldean paths. And boy, do Don Joey's knights finally get the glorious battles they were thirsting for—along with a hefty side dish of lengthy cutscenes. We take on Arven/Arwen/Billy, undoubtedly not helping with his daddy issues; finally find out who Cassiopeia is (the one character NOT played by Clavell); and go toe-to-toe with La Roux, Baby Poppy, King Larry, a weeping German, and La Primera in the Pokémon League. Plus, Nemona simply won't stop battling us. Doesn't she have student council things to do? Seems like the academy is pretty loose with its rules-enforcement.
