Episode 155 Chapter 16, Other European Electronic Music Studios. Works Recommended from my book, Electronic and Experimental Music  Welcome to the Archive of Electronic Music. This is Thom Holmes. This podcast is produced as a companion to my book, Electronic and Experimental Music, published by Routledge. Each of these episodes corresponds to a chapter in the text and an associated list of recommended works, also called Listen in the text. They provide listening examples of vintage electronic works featured in the text. The works themselves can be enjoyed without the book and I hope that they stand as a chronological survey of important works in the history of electronic music. Be sure to tune-in to other episodes of the podcast where we explore a wide range of electronic music in many styles and genres, all drawn from my archive of vintage recordings. There is a complete playlist for this episode on the website for the podcast. The stars of the Big Dipper dip quite low at nightfall at this time of year. In fact, from south of about Kansas City, one or more of its stars dip below the horizon and out of view. And from south of about Dallas, the entire dipper vanishes. Like all the stars north of the celestial equator, the stars of the dipper circle around the north celestial pole, which is marked by the star Polaris. How high or low the dipper stands depends on your latitude. From the northern half of the United States, the stars are “circumpolar.” That means they never set – they’re always above the horizon, both night and day. In many cultures, such stars were described as “eternal” or “undying.” That made them especially important in the skylore and mythology of those cultures. From the southern half of the country, the dipper isn’t circumpolar – not all of it, anyway. From some locations, one or two stars drop below the horizon. From others, the entire dipper sets. Even from those spots, though, it climbs back into view within a few hours. So the dipper is in sight for at least part of the night every night of the year. As twilight fades this evening, viewers at northern latitudes can see the dipper roughly parallel to the northern horizon. From southern latitudes, it might be hidden. But it will climb back into view after midnight. And no matter where you are, the Big Dipper will stand high in the sky at dawn. Script by Damond Benningfield

The thirteenth-century Muslim mystic and poet Jalal al-Din Rumi (1207–1273) is a popular spiritual icon. His legacy is sustained within the mystical and religious practice of Sufism, particularly through renditions of his poetry, music, and the meditation practice of whirling. In Canada, practices associated with Rumi have become ubiquitous in public spaces, such as museums, art galleries, and theatre halls, just as they continue to inform sacred ritual among Sufi communities.  The Dervishes of the North: Rumi, Whirling, and the Making of Sufism in Canada (University of Toronto Press, 2023) explores what practices associated with Rumi in public and private spaces tell us about Sufism and spirituality, including sacred, cultural, and artistic expressions in the Canadian context. Using Rumi and contemporary expressions of poetry and whirling associated with him, the book captures the lived reality of Sufism through an ethnographic study of communities in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver. Drawing from conversations with Sufi leaders, whirling dervishes, and poets, Merin Shobhana Xavier, Associate Professor of Religion at Queen's University, explores how Sufism is constructed in Canada, particularly at the nexus of Islamic mysticism, Muslim diaspora, spiritual commodity, popular culture, and universal spirituality.  In our conversation we discussed the history of the Sufi communities in Canada, Rumi's rise in popularity in North America, the public performance versus the ritual practice of whirling, poetic remembrance ceremonies, the commemoration of the death anniversary of Rumi, gender dynamics in Sufi rituals, women's positions of authority, the appropriation and commodification of Rumi, and future directions in the study of “Sufism in Canada.” The book is available an as open access title HERE. Solitude – craving it brought you to this remote place. You enjoy being alone under stormy skies, free to spend time with your own thoughts, just listening to the rhythm of the rain on the roof. Focusing, you identify the hollow metallic plink of individual drops. You hear the difference between the torrent rushing through the downspout and the rain dripping from the eaves. How is it that you've never noticed these sounds before? Each drop tapping overhead is unique, but together they form a melody that embraces you, soothing your soul. Whirling thoughts become measured and time is unhurried. Your solitude has arrived. ---

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: "Diamondoid bacteria" nanobots: deadly threat or dead-end? A nanotech investigation, published by titotal on September 29, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Confidence level: I'm a computational physicist working on nanoscale simulations, so I have some understanding of most of the things discussed here, but I am not specifically an expert on the topics covered, so I can't promise perfect accuracy. I want to give a huge thanks to Professor Phillip Moriarty of the university of Nottingham for answering my questions about the experimental side of mechanosynthesis research. Introduction: A lot of people are highly concerned that a malevolent AI or insane human will, in the near future, set out to destroy humanity. If such an entity wanted to be absolutely sure they would succeed, what method would they use? Nuclear war? Pandemics? According to some in the x-risk community, the answer is this: The AI will invent molecular nanotechnology, and then kill us all with diamondoid bacteria nanobots. This is the "lower bound" scenario posited by Yudkowsky in his post AGI ruin: The nanomachinery builds diamondoid bacteria, that replicate with solar power and atmospheric CHON, maybe aggregate into some miniature rockets or jets so they can ride the jetstream to spread across the Earth's atmosphere, get into human bloodstreams and hide, strike on a timer. The phrase "diamondoid bacteria" really struck out at me, and I'm not the only one. In this post by Carlsmith (which I found very interesting), Carlsmith refers to diamondoid bacteria as an example of future tech that feels unreal, but may still happen: Whirling knives? Diamondoid bacteria? Relentless references to paper-clips, or "tiny molecular squiggles"? I've written, elsewhere, about the "unreality" of futurism. AI risk had a lot of that for me. Meanwhile, the controversial anti-EA crusader Emille Torres cites the term "diamondoid bacteria" as a reason to dismiss AI risk, calling it "patently ridiculous". I was interested to know more. What is diamondoid bacteria? How far along is molecular nanotech research? What are the challenges that we (or an AI) will need to overcome to create this technology? If you want, you can stop here and try and guess the answers to these questions. It is my hope that by trying to answer these questions, I can give you a taste of what nanoscale research actually looks like. It ended up being the tale of a group of scientists who had a dream of revolutionary nanotechnology, and tried to answer the difficult question: How do I actually build that? What is "diamondoid bacteria"? The literal phrase "diamondoid bacteria" appears to have been invented by Eliezer Yudkowsky about two years ago. If you search the exact phrase in google scholar there are no matches: If you search the phrase in regular google, you will get a very small number of matches, all of which are from Yudkowsky or directly/indirectly quoting Yudkowsky. The very first use of the phrase on the internet appears to be this twitter post from September 15 2021. (I suppose there's a chance someone else used the phrase in person). I speculate here that Eliezer invented the term as a poetic licence way of making nanobots seem more viscerally real. It does not seem likely that the hypothetical nanobots would fit the scientific definition of bacteria, unless you really stretched the definition of terms like "single-celled" and "binary fission". Although bacteria are very impressive micro-machines, so I wouldn't be surprised if future nanotech bore at least some resemblance. Frankly, I think inventing new terms is an extremely unwise move (I think that Eliezer has stopped using the term since I started writing this, but others still are). "diamondoid bacteria" sounds science-ey enough that a lot of people would assume it was already a scien...

Hello and welcome to Cause of Death – 100 Seconds to Midnight. I'm your host, Jackie Moranty. I changed my mind mid-script. I decided that I needed to finish this season with a 100 Seconds to Midnight Episode on extinction. I thought that would be more appropriate, so this week, I'm going to talk about the last disease in this season. We're going to look at Whirling Disease in Fish. Let's begin with etiology and pathology. This will be a new pathogen for us. Myxobolus cerebralis is a myxozoan parasite. Whirling disease is caused by the actinosporean spores of the parasite Myxobolus cerebralis. This parasite has a complex two-host lifecycle. The parasite alternates between the sludge worm, Tubifex tubifex and the salmonid host. I've hit 15,000 downloads! That's a big deal. I never thought this podcast would attract as many listeners as it does and I want to thank everyone for coming back and passing the word. EK On the Go

Join us in this episode (the first of a two-part series) for stories of the B & I Circus Store, founded by Earl Irwin in 1945 in Lakewood, WA. Our guest today is Earl Irwin's son, Ron Irwin, who ran the store for decades following his father's passing. Ron is joined by Earl Borgert, the founder's grandson, family archivist and President of the I.V.A.N. Foundation. What began as a military surplus outlet housed in an unassuming 500 SF cinderblock storeroom became a prototype for the postwar American shopping mall, eventually expanding to over 300,000 SF. Under Irwin's exuberant and tireless leadership, the B & I charmed multitudes, attracted by spectacles that transformed the store into a destination for extraordinary adventures. Recently discovered reel-to-reel recordings allow us to enjoy Earl Irwin's own voice for the first time since his death in the 70's. Woven into this audio tapestry are voices of Power of Place listeners—all of whom visited the B & I as children—recalling endless hours of reverie: Whirling on a carousel, collecting autographs from their best-loved sports and movie heroes; and discovering a revolving menagerie, including the store's resident lowland gorilla, Ivan. "The mall—with the leased departments under one roof (so they don't have to drive to get in their car and drive to another location for clothing or another location for sporting goods)—hadn't been invented yet. It hadn't really been done anywhere before.” - Ron Irwin

Joseph Curiale joins us to share about his long -standing experience in the music entertainment field as a Master Composer, Conductor, Arranger and Orchestrator. We meet at a unique time in his life when he's departing from his former body of work to start a new life outside the US. While his own works like his music on the CD "Awakening", “In The Sound”, I'n Autumn”, “The Music of Life” and “Dinkytown”, are rare and unforgettable, Joseph has also worked with so many Music Legends, that the list is confounding. If you would like to see the staggering list of talent he has worked with, Click the Link Below: https://www.josephcurialemusic.com/cv He's been a composer, arranger, orchestrator, conductor, or a collaborative songwriter in The London Symphony Orchestra, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, The Check. Joseph has worked with The Boston Pops and performed with The Tonight Show, Frasier, The Emmy Awards, The Television Academy Hall of Fame and so many more! Joseph has also worked with Michael Jackson, Barry White, Tower of Power, Patti Austin, Gino Vanelli, Sami Davis Jr., Quincy Jones, Oprah Winfrey, Paul Williams, Earth Wind & Fire, The Spinners, Michelle Legrand, Marilyn & Alan Bergman, Anita Baker, Ricky Martin, Chaka Khan, Little Richard, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, etc… Nothing with Joseph Curiale is small. He participated in The Hollywood Bowl Celebration of Music and The Inauguration of several Presidents. In this interview, we whirl through Josephs' experience in the music business and dialogue into his most personal experiences and revelations, including, who has made profound contributions in his life and calling and who formed who he is as an instrument of musical expression and as a human being.
