Explore lessons from the life of Abdullah ibn Mubarak the Author of Kitāb az-Zuhd wa'r-Raqāʾiq by Imām Ibn al-Mubārak (رحمه الله), a timeless work on breaking the dunya delusion.
This week and the weeks following, we will draw from the timeless wisdom of Kitāb az-Zuhd wa'r-Raqāʾiq by Imām ʿAbdullāh Ibn al-Mubārak (رحمه الله) (736–797 CE). A scholar, muḥaddith, jurist, and ascetic. Known for his depth, balance, and protection of the vulnerable.Zuhd isn't about looking poor or avoiding life's blessings. It's about keeping the heart detached from worldly things, even when they're within reach. Ibn al-Mubārak exemplified this. Though he had wealth and dressed well, he lived simply, gave generously, and stayed focused on Allah.

We keep asking what's gone wrong with Muslims today—but we're ignoring the one thing that's always brought nations to their knees. From the people of Nuh, to Aad and Thamud, to the people of Lut—every collapse began with the same root cause. In this episode of The Disease and the Cure by Imām Ibn al-Qayyim, Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan explains how sins—when ignored, normalised, or made public—have always led to destruction, and how that same legacy is unfolding again today. Are we walking the same path? Are we prepared for what follows? fWotD Episode 2901: Muhammad IV of Granada Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 14 April 2025 is Muhammad IV of Granada.Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ismail (Arabic: أبو عبد الله محمد الرابع), also known as Muhammad IV (14 April 1315 – 25 August 1333), was the ruler of the Emirate of Granada on the Iberian Peninsula from 1325 to 1333. He was the sixth sultan of the Nasrid dynasty, succeeding to the throne at ten years old when his father, Ismail I (r. 1314–1325), was assassinated. The initial years of his reign were marked by conflict among his ministers, who vied for control of the young sultan's government. This escalated into a civil war between the party of the vizier Muhammad ibn al-Mahruq and that of the powerful commander of the Volunteers of the Faith, Uthman ibn Abi al-Ula. Uthman declared Muhammad's uncle, Muhammad ibn Faraj, as a rival sultan and secured support from Alfonso XI of Castile (r. 1312–1350), Granada's Christian neighbour to the north. Muhammad IV requested help from Abu Said Uthman II (r. 1310–1331) of the Marinid Sultanate in Morocco and gave him territories in the Iberian Peninsula, including Ronda, Marbella, and Algeciras, probably in exchange for Marinid troops. The civil war ended in 1328 when Muhammad, who despite his youth had begun taking a more active role in government, reconciled with Uthman ibn Abi al-Ula, and ordered Ibn al-Mahruq assassinated; the pretender Muhammad ibn Faraj was sent to North Africa. In 1329 he appointed his childhood tutor Abu Nuaym Ridwan as the hajib (chamberlain), outranking his other ministers; this was the first time the title appeared in the Emirate of Granada. In 1328 and 1329, Alfonso XI formed an anti-Granada alliance with another Iberian monarch, Alfonso IV of Aragon (r. 1327–1336). Both Christian kingdoms invaded Granada in 1330, with Alfonso XI leading his army to take Teba and pillage the Granadan countryside. Muhammad sought terms, and secured a treaty with Castile on 19 February 1331. Alfonso XI soon broke the treaty by stopping food exports to Granada as had been agreed, while Aragon did not join the treaty and was invaded by Granadan forces. In September 1332, Muhammad sailed to the Marinid court at Fez to request help. The new Marinid Sultan Abu al-Hasan Ali (r. 1331–1348) sent 5,000 troops, led by his son Abu Malik Abd al-Wahid, to Algeciras in early 1333. The troops besieged the Castilians at Gibraltar: the town surrendered in June 1333 but was in turn besieged by Alfonso XI. Muhammad raided Castile in a diversionary attack before marching to relieve Gibraltar. This resulted in a stalemate that ended with a truce on 24 August 1333 that lifted the siege of Gibraltar and restored the 1331 treaty. One day later, Muhammad was assassinated (aged 18) on the orders of the sons of Uthman ibn Abi al-Ula (who had died in 1330), who resented either the sultan's alliance with the Marinids or his friendliness with Castile. He was succeeded by his brother Yusuf I (r. 1333–1354).This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Monday, 14 April 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Muhammad IV of Granada on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Ruth.
Bell2Bell's latest podcast features Steven Dresner, CEO of Walk-in Dermatology, a modern, patient-focused dermatology practice. During the interview, Dresner discussed Walk-in Dermatology's mission and vision. “Walk-in Dermatology is really a cross between traditional dermatology and urgent care. The concept is very straightforward. In dermatology and other areas of medicine, patients tend to wait too long to be seen by a medical provider. We are focused on providing high-quality, same-day care. The services we perform are the exact same as you would find in a more traditional dermatology practice, but we are making those services more accessible to people who want a same-day appointment or just want to walk in… If you wake up with a rash or acne or some other issue and your dermatologist can't see you for two months, that's not going to help you very much. That's the market that we serve.” Join IBN's Carmel Fisher and Steven Dresner, CEO of Walk-in Dermatology, as they discuss how Walk-in Dermatology's economics compare to traditional practices, including metrics like patient acquisition cost and visit frequency. Bell2Bell's latest podcast features Will Gray, Founding Partner, CEO & Director of New Era Helium Inc. (NASDAQ: NEHC), an exploration and production (E&P) company sourcing helium from natural gas reserves in the Permian Basin. During the interview, Gray discussed New Era Helium's mission and vision. “We are an upstream natural gas and helium producer that's focused within the Permian Basin. We own and operate approximately 137,000 acres hosting 400-plus wells with substantial proved and probable gas reserves that have helium associated with them… When you look at the number of publicly traded, small- and micro-cap, upstream helium companies, a lot of them are in the exploration stage. They have large acreage positions, but not yet commercialization. We're actually producing helium and natural gas now… We're looking to vertically integrate with our own processing plants and our own infrastructure. That's really what we're doing as we speak. That's how we differentiate in the market. We offer a lower-risk scenario with proved helium reserves.” Join IBN's Carmel Fisher and Will Gray, Founding Partner, CEO & Director of New Era Helium, as they discuss the company's efforts to develop a 250MW net-zero energy AI/HPC data center through a partnership with Sharon AI. (NASDAQ: KGEI) (TSX: KEI), a North American energy company focused on finding and exploiting energy projects in oil and gas. During the interview, Regener discussed Kolibri Global Energy's efforts to sustain healthy margins despite oil price volatility. “It's all about the wells that we have drilled performing, but we have enough production history that it shouldn't be a big risk. We're also drilling new wells, so there's always some variability. Despite this, we try to be conservative in our forecasts and drill in proven locations to avoid taking big risks. We do have one well that we're drilling this year that has a higher risk profile. We have a 46% interest in that project, and a large integrated oil company is our partner—people can probably figure out who that is. That partnership reduces some of our risk and enables us to prove up even more reserves, because those are not in our reserve report right now. Bell2Bell's latest podcast features Tamir Poleg, the Co-Founder, Chairman & CEO of The Real Brokerage Inc. (NASDAQ: REAX), which is revolutionizing the residential real estate industry by pairing best-in-class technology with the trusted guidance of an agent. We provide a digital brokerage platform for agents, while working to build a better end-to-end home buying experience for consumers. During the interview, Tamir Poleg discussed what makes The Real Brokerage's business model so compelling. "We are the most efficient real estate brokerage in the market because of the fact that we implement software instead of putting more and more humans to work, meaning that as we grow, as we scale, as we add more and more agents, we do not grow our operating expense at the same pace. And we have a very compelling ratio of one employee for every 140 agents, whereas the average in the industry is one employee for every 20 agents at any other brokerage. We have very few employees that process actions due to a lot of automation and software that we built that can automate all of the processes that typically are done by a human. So this is a huge competitive advantage because nobody can actually compete with us on efficiency and This is why we can scale just in the first two weeks of January of 2025, we added 1000 agents in two weeks." Thomas Bauer's "A Culture of Ambiguity" stands out as one of the most important contributions to Islamic Studies in recent decades. First published in German in 2011, it wasn't until 2021 that it became available in English. Bauer's three decades of knowledge and expertise shine through in the work, which earned him the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Award in Germany. It is rare for an academic book rich in insights for specialists to also be engaging enough for general readers, yet this is exactly what Bauer has achieved. However our guest today has an essay published in the Maydan journal online journal interogating Bauer's conceptualisation of "ambiguity" and its application in the history of islamic culture. Faheem A. Hussain is an independent researcher. He has a BA (Hons.) in Arabic and Islamic studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, a PGCE in Religious Studies from Roehampton University, and an MA in philosophy from Heythrop College, University of London. His writings can be found at https://faheemahussain.substack.com/ and https://x.com/FaheemAMHussain. Faheem's article: https://themaydan.com/2024/08/ambiguity-as-a-master-key-critically-reading-thomas-bauers-culture-of-ambiguity/ https://x.com/FaheemAMHussain/status/1772736085627457970 Timestamps 02:11 You say in your essay: Now this does not pretend to be anything but a critical review of Bauer, interrogating his ideas of ambiguity, its coherence and implications, and despite my best efforts in civility, there's no hiding my polemical intent. Even so, I wish to insist that this book is a product of a fine mind and generous soul, and that I have no doubt that if anyone reads the book, they will only leave more humbled, indebted as well as greatly enriched by reading it. Without a doubt, this is a book that should be read as well as kept on a shelf. Before we start why don't you give us an overview of the book and what he liked best about it. 16:23 At the heart of Bauer's work is this concept of Ambiguity. Tell us what he means by this and your reservations. 37:52 For me, my favourite parts were on the divergent readings of the Quran and the difference between the comfort of medieval scholars about that, particularly Ibn al-Jazari and the anxiety of modern Muslims. Though at first blush the late Saudi-Salafi cleric, Sheikh Ibn al-ʿUthaymin and the Pakistani activist al-Mawdudi, God be kind to their souls, might seem apart yet they share the same modern anxiety about ambiguity according to Bauer. It seems you are more on board with him on this then his other applications of ambiguity in the cultural history of Islam. 49:25 Like you, I wasn't convinced by his thoughts on the concept of foreigness in Islamic cultural history. You also take him to task on his take on homoerotica. I also feel that with current debate about gender and the like whether it makes sense to say there is a lack of ambiguity in contemporary culture. I feel if we had experts on medieval, early modern and modern Europe as Bauer is an expert on medieval Arabic whether we would have better insights on ambiguity as a concept. 01:03:52 And finally before we end tell us where listeners can turn next to learn more about today's topic and what are other current projects that listeners can anticipate? Works mentioned in episode: Pieter Coppens, Did Modernity End Polyvalence? The word “آية” (āyah) in Arabic refers to a “verse” in Scripture. It can also mean a “sign” or “miracle.” Its root in Semitic is ء-ي-ي (hamza-ya-ya) or ء-ي-ن (hamza-ya-nun), depending on the classical derivation one follows. The equivalent of “آية” (āyah) in biblical Hebrew is אוֹת ('ot), which means “sign,” "proof," or “mark.”“And He said, ‘Certainly I will be with you, and this shall be the sign אוֹת ('ot) to you that it is I who have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God at this mountain.'” (Exodus 3:12)In Exodus, God himself spoke to Moses. The fact that God spoke is itself the sign, and Moses, in turn, is his sign—living proof of God's promise: “Certainly I will be with you, and you shall worship me.”“If they will not believe you or heed the witness of the first sign ('ot), they may believe the witness of the last sign ('ot).” (Exodus 4:8)“But I will harden Pharaoh's heart that I may multiply my signs ('otot) and my wonders in the land of Egypt.” (Exodus 7:3)In Exodus, Moses is living, functional proof that God himself has spoken. Moses is the 'ot elohim, the “آية الله” (āyat allāh), the “sign of God,” the ”proof of God” to Pharaoh. But as Moses confirms in Deuteronomy, the signs in Exodus are not the miracles and wonders themselves, but rather, the verses that carry them, the āyāt that record what God has spoken. These verses serve as the true “signs,” the otot that carry God's will and instruction to the people. In turn, all those who proclaim these verses—for example, Jesus in Luke's Gospel—are judged by those who shun God. Yet, in fulfillment of God's command, even Jesus would not judge them before the time. His only purpose was to give God's signs as proof in anticipation of the one Judge whose Kingdom rules over all. This week, I discuss Luke 6:37.Show NotesThe word “āyāt” in Arabic is written as آيات. It is the plural form of “āyah” (آية), which means “verse” or “sign” and is commonly used to refer to the verses of the Abrahamic texts. “They have sold the proofs' of God at a cheap price and turned away from? His path; evil is what they did.” (Surah Al-Tawbah 9:9) ש-פ-ט (shin-fe-ṭet)To judge, to rule or govern, a judgment, to administer justice. Related to the function ש-ל-מ (mem-sheen-lamed), mashal—can signify a parable but also signifies ruling, judging, and making comparisons. It can also mean “to rule” or “to have dominion.” In Arabic م-ث-ل (mīm-thāʾ-lām) is “to resemble” or “to compare” مثل (mathal).ר-ש-ע (resh-shin-‘ayin) / ر-س-ع (rā-sīn-‘ayn)To be wicked, to act wickedly. A wicked person. In Arabic, رَسَعَ can mean looseness or slackness of limbs. From the Hadith of Ibn Amr ibn al-As: “بَكَى حَتَّى رَسَعَتْ عينُهُ” (baka hatta rasa‘at ‘aynu) “He cried until his eye changed, became damaged, or its eyelids stuck together.” The word رَسَعَتْ (rasa‘at) here means: 1. Changed or became altered, 2. Became damaged or corrupted, 3. The eyelids stuck together due to excessive crying. Here we are with another special radio episode. Not only is this the return of the IBN Radio but it's the return of Valentine's Day...IBN style. DJ Wildcard kicks things off with a little help from Barry White and doesn't slow down the momentum at all throughout the broadcast. Remember to always lead with love and cherish your loved ones today just like you would on any other. God is LOVE and LOVE is kind, and were made in GODs image. So we are all love and have the capacity to experience it at its PUREST form. Special thanks to the youtube channels that have songs played on the broadcast. Untitled By Matias (Sample Blends) and Jarred Rankins (8Ball & MJG/Simply Red). Also special thanks to Kiondra Bell, Dominique Walker and my mother, Iris Allen, for sharing their unique thoughts on what love means to them and their experiences of it. Thank you all for listening. Have a great day This episode is a re-upload from 2/14/24 for technical reasons. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ibn87dc/message
