Way back in Episode 27, the Camerosity gang went on a three hour tour to a tropical paradise and asked everyone what would be their idea of three "desert island" cameras that they would want to be stranded with if they couldn't have anything else. That discussion proved to be a fun one and something we had wanted to revisit again. It would take us all the way to Episode 88 when we would finally put out the call for another Desert Island episode. Joining Anthony, Paul, Mike and our new regular host Stephen Strangways, are returning callers A.J. Gentile, Andrew and Christopher Wells, Ira Cohen, Will Pinkham, and first time caller Robin Stone. Starting with this episode, we are welcoming Stephen as one of the regular hosts to the show. His presence and knowledge on many previous episodes has impressed us, and after considering regular scheduling conflicts with the four regular hosts, we thought it was time to add a fifth person. Although Theo has missed the last two episodes, he is still very much apart of the show and will return soon. With a fifth host, in the event one of the "original four" have a scheduling issue, we can continue without hesitation. On this episode, we go through a tremendous amount of GAS, covering many unexpected models including multiple Horseman cameras, a Fuji G617, Argus Brick, Nikon F2, Leica CL, Zeiss-Ikon Tenax II, and many, many others. In addition to commercially available cameras, both Andrew and Christopher Wells share with us their own home made 3D printed large format creations. Custom cameras built to use any combination of lenses, shutters, and film backs in a million different combinations are truly one of the more fascinating aspects of this hobby. And if 3D printing your own camera isn't cool enough, Andrew took it a step further and even made his own bellows! In addition to tropical island GAS, we answer the question of why the Nikon F mount is backwards of almost every other interchangeable lens system and the Wells brothers give us a quick update of the state of current Polaroid Originals instant film. Meet Anthony, Paul, and Mike: If you are in the vicinity of Cincinnati, Ohio on Saturday, March 22nd, come to the Ohio Camera Swap at the Hilton Garden Inn Cincinnati/West Chester and say hi to us. Who knows, maybe even some other Camerosity Podcast regulars will show up as well. While you're there, maybe you can buy something from us! As always, the topics we discuss on the Camerosity Podcast are influenced by you! Please don't feel like you have to be an expert on a specific type of camera, or have the level of knowledge on par with other people on the show. We LOVE people who are into shooting or collecting cameras, no matter how long you've been doing it, so please don't consider your knowledge level to be a prerequisite for joining! The guys and I rarely know where each episode is going to go until it happens, so if you'd like to join us on a future episode, be sure to look out for our show announcements on our Camerosity Podcast Facebook page, the Camerosity Discord server, and right here on mikeeckman.com. We usually record every other Monday and announcements, along with the Zoom link are typically shared 2-3 days in advance. For our next episode, we will be discussing camera failures and home repairs. What are some of the most common problems vintage cameras face and what can you do to get them back up and working? While the Camerosity Podcast fully recommends professional CLAs to keep vintage cameras going as long as possible, we understand that a full service on every vintage camera is impractical, so sometimes you have to take matters in your own hands. If you aren't afraid to go inside a camera and possibly make it worse, the next episode may be for you! We will record Episode 89 on Monday, March 10th at 7pm Central Daylight Time and 8pm Eastern Daylight Time. (Note that Daylight Savings Time starts in North America on Sunday, March 9th, so be sure to check your local time if you plan on joining the show!) The Season 4 Finale wraps up with an episode exploring DAG overhauls: Leica M3 and the DAG days of Summer. Can a previous CLA on a Leica guarantee a better selling price? Also: my newly acquired Leica M3 - the ultimate classic camera from the 1950s & why I have finally reached the top of the Leica mountain. Downsides: the only truly hot Leica on eBay is still the ever price-increasing M6; hence, no offers on my cosmetically imperfect yet Sherry Krauter CLA'd M4, let alone my DAG CLA'd Leica CL. Included: Don A Goldberg, DAG, Sherry Krauter, Leica M3, Leica M4, Leica CL, Leica M6, using DAG LEICA as a saved search. Bringing It All Back Home will return for Season 5 in September!
Season 4 Episode 22 - Henri Cartier-Bresson & the Leica SBOOI. Today's episode explores the shortcomings & solutions for the (film version) Leica CL — particularly a combo that can overcome the issue of its cluttered, small, not so bright viewfinder. Hence: an episode all about the Leica SBOOI, Henri Cartier-Bresson, as well as his not so well known project spending a week photographing various locations in New Jersey. Also: a bit about a recent upgrade to the Epson V850 HCB in New Jersey; https://americanarchive.org/catalog/cpb-aacip-75-902z3dv6 More about the SBOOI: https://johnnymartyr.wordpress.com/2022/03/21/shining-a-light-on-bright-line-viewfinders/ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/charles-kershenblatt8/message
Season 4 Episode 13 - Leicaflex SL. Today's episode concentrates on finding genuine Leica goodness without going crazy on your budget. Focusing mostly on the R-bayonet series Summicron, as well as the made-in-Wetzlar Leicaflex SL camera, this episode will attempt to sort out 3 different price ranges: under $400, under $600, under $1100 . Topics include: Oscar Barnack, Leica CL, 50mm Summircon-R, 40mm Summicron-C. Walter Sandler, the "Willem" effect on eBay prices, as well as finding joy in the look, feel, performace, & outcome of your gear. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/charles-kershenblatt8/message
Season 4 Episode 10 - Leica CL - Is it for you? Did you catch Willem Verbeeck using one recently? Bringing It All Back Home takes a deep dive into whether or not it is worth it to consider the LEICA CL as your first M-mount system. Crowded frame-lines, faulty plastic take-up spools, awkward film loading method - it all gets a serious evaluation. Are you experienced with 40mm? Can you be sold on the Summicron-C 40 cult? How does a $450 DAG CLA make you feel? Tune in and consider the CL options. Buying a film camera can be very confusing. After all, you can't really ask questions about the megapixels. Further, the autofocus doesn't have things like face and eye detection. Film cameras let you do things much differently from digital. They're fun! In 2022 though, it's nonsensical to ask yourself the same questions folks did back in the '90s and prior. You could say that your camera took good pictures, but it would be the film that did it along with the lenses. We're diving into the questions you should ask yourself about how to buy a film camera. And I'm sharing my experience from buying them for over a decade. You can view this article and much more with minimal ads in our brand new app for iOS, iPadOS, and Android. Table of Contents Choose the Right Shops (eBay, Blue Moon Camera, and More) Point and Shoot, Rangefinder, or SLR? Medium Format, Large Format, or 35mm? Your Best Bet Is All Mechanical Check Out the Lens System (If There Is One) Choose the Right Shops (eBay, Blue Moon Camera, and More) First off, choose the right shops. If you're wondering how to buy a film camera, don't get it from an awful source. You can't always trust Craigslist. And so let's dive into this a bit more: Some retailers do nothing to prep the camera for resale. Some will buy it straight from a buyer for a stupidly low price, and then sell it straight to you for more than they bought it for. I wouldn't go with any of the big guys unless it's a really big purchase of a camera that's also very rare. Even the people I know who work at the big camera shops don't buy their used film cameras there. Some retailers go as far as revamping and refurbishing the cameras. Blue Moon Camera, our partner for the Rare Camera Store initiative, does this! eBay can have good shops, but be sure to check the ratings. Etsy can be an awesome place to buy cameras if you can get them at the right price. Look around at prices on the market. Don't be afraid to be confrontational. The truth is that you're not going to be sitting there one day when you retire regretting you were confrontational. Hold them accountable. If the store you're looking at is charging more, ask them what's justifying the extra cost. Good shops will be transparent with you. Point and Shoot, Rangefinder, or SLR? There are lots of tough questions you need to answer as far as how to buy a film camera. One of them is about the camera type. A point and shoot will keep things simple. A rangefinder is one of the smallest and most versatile. Plus, they can transition easily into digital if you're reaching for something with Leica M-mount. An SLR can transition into digital too, though a bit poorly these days. SLRs show you what you're getting in the viewfinder, while other cameras give you an approximation. Personally, I reach for point and shoots and rangefinders. There are affordable SLR film cameras, but I've got a good enough experience with modern day mirrorless! Medium Format, Large Format, or 35mm? Here's another big question! What format are you intending to shoot? 35mm is a small format, but if you think about how to buy a film camera and what you're buying it for, it could be the tactile experience. If you're going for 35mm, get it because it feels good, the film you want is easier to get in 35mm, or it's just fun. Otherwise, just go medium format or large format. Most digital cameras can outdo what 35mm film does these days. But medium format can outdo digital in many ways. Your Best Bet Is All Mechanical THIS IS A BIG ONE!!! Cameras with electronics are prone to failure. Some cameras are a combo of both mechanical and electronic. For example, look at the Leica M6 or Leica CL. They're mechanical cameras but the meter uses electronics. If anything, your Leica M6 will just become a Leica M4! Mechanical cameras will also mean that they'll keep working pretty much no matter what. If your camera needs a battery to power the shutter, buy with caution. Check Out the Lens System (If There Is One) S...
Ever find it impossible to see what's right in front of you? Season 2 comes to an end with an episode about rediscovering an amazing lens, waking up from medium format bias — and happily plunging back into the cult that is Leica. Join Bringing It All Back Home for an episode celebrating the Leica CL, as well as the hidden gem of high resolution and Leica rendering that is the 40mm Summicron-C. As you already know I'm starting this series of interviews to document what is going on with this pandemic. We are featuring an array of people from different places in the world, so we get an even picture of what is happening. Today's guest is Paul Lefko, another good friend of mine from the West coast of America - Los Angeles. Paul was one of the few that used Instagram as a platform in a good way and we became mates through. So much so not only has Paul appeared on the podcast on episode 21, back in 2018, but also co-hosted a few shows with me! We have been mates for a while now and finally got to meet up last year while he had a layover in the UK. Paul is not only a great photographer, who shoots models and aspiring musicians around Hollywood but also a great travel photographer too. However, that is not his full story, Paul is also a full-time therapist and a father of two. So listen to this show as we talk about: schools + Chromebooks future of teaching unemployed a cleaner earth ventilators, ICU & staying at home hospital costs + health insurance E.R. staff laid off Paul's work + telephone medication working remotely Photography Paul also briefly talks about finding a Fuji x100 in his gear and compares this to a Leica CL he's just playing with. Since his travels to Africa last year, he's been invited back to help with future workshops too, so exciting times to come! Mirrorless question of the month: Hi, first of all, a big thank you for the great photography podcasts that you release each month. You guys have become one of my favorite photography outlets :) I’m actually a better painter than a photographer but my question involves both art forms. I paint on large canvas and would like to create high-resolution files of my paintings for archiving and digital post-processing. The paintings are much too large to scan. I own an old Nikon D7000 with 16MP and have been wanting to upgrade to a recent mirrorless camera. I’m looking at Panasonic and Olympus cameras as the 4:3 aspect ratio fits that of my paintings and both cameras have a high-resolution mode that can produce 80MP images from the 20MP sensor. Do you think that the high-resolution mode will enable me to get good quality large files of my paintings or is this just a marketing gimmick? And which lens would you recommend me to get? On this episode #9 “We Shoot Mirrorless” podcast episode for December 2017, Marco invited guest co-host Joseph Linaschke, also known as PhotoJoseph on social media, to discuss these new products and mirrorless topics: This show is sponsored by: COSYSPEED and PhotoShelter Joseph introduces himself and shares why and when he switched to mirrorless cameras for his professional work. Panasonic announced a new camera. The LUMIX DC G9 has the latest 20.3 MPix m4/3 sensor (same as GH5 but tweaked and improved jpg image processing quality. It shoots up to 20 fps with continuous AF and its 5-axis sensor stabilization reduces shake up to 6.5 stops (it supports Dual IS, too). It has 225 AF points and an AF point selector joystick. The EVF has a huge magnification of 0.83x OLED EVF with 3.68 Mio dots next to a 3” fully articulating tilt-screen. Images can be stored on two UHS-II SD card slots. And connectivity options include HDMI, Mic, Headphone, Flash Sync, USB3, wired remote and WiFi 802.11ac standard. It shoots video in UHD 4K 60fps using the full sensor without an extra video crop. The lens is also freeze proof and weather sealed B&H: https://bhpho.to/2AZDfaT Amazon DE: http://amzn.to/2yMLAZG Leica announced the compact CL camera. It’s and L-mount camera with a 24 MPix APS-C sensor. And compared to the Leica TL2, which heavily relies on a touchscreen menu control operation, the Leica CL is a bit more conventional with two exposure dials, a 4 way-controller and a few physical buttons. The CL also has a built-in EVF with 2.36 Mio dots (this has to be purchased as an extra attachment for the TL) and it has a small “current settings” LCD on top next to the shutter release. The rear LCD is also touch sensitive. B&H: https://bhpho.to/2AYmKeZ Leica also released the Noctilux-M 75mm f1.25 ASPH lens. This lens will offer a very shallow depth of field and should produce an amazing bokeh. The Minimum focus distance is 85cm or 3 ft, but the weight of approximately 1kg or 2.3 pounds is quite massive. B&H: https://bhpho.to/2yKT5jN Sigma introduced the new 16mm f1.4 DC DN lens that will be shipping now for Sony APS-C (classic 24mm FOV with f1.4) and m4/3 cameras (32mm FOV equivalent). It has a stepping motor for fast and silent AF that should work well for still as well as video work. It’s dust and splash proof and has 9 rounded aperture blades for a circular bokeh wide open. The lens is also treated with an advanced lens coating to minimize flare and ghosting. The lens weighs 405g or 14.3 oz B&H: https://bhpho.to/2yM5vrD Amazon DE: http://amzn.to/2yM994B Fujifilm updated the FW for many interchangeable lens cameras in the past month. The biggest upgrade came to the X-T2 with FW upgrade 3.0. The biggest improvement was made to the AF tracking algorithm for moving subjects. According to Fuji, it enhances the AF-C to track subjects twice as fast as previous FW as well as the ability to track moving objects up to 50% smaller than before. The FW also ads the ability to use “Fujifilm X Raw Studio”, improves radio flash controller usability, ads RGB histogram highlight warnings, and fixes a problem in Auto ISO setting with exposure compensation set to C. I'm in process of selling my Nikon D300s camera (way to heavy for my age and use) with the intention to get a Fujifilm X-T2. I plan to get the EF-x500 flash too, primarily for fill light for indoor shooting. However, I have read that this flash does not work well and it dies after a few uses (poor manufacturing or design flaw..!) the word is the OEM manufacturer "Nissin Digital i60A" flash does a much better job. I know from the podcast that you don't use flash much. But I wanted to know your understanding/recommendation on to which flash to get - the Fujifilm EF-x500 or Nissin Digital i60A or a different one? I'll appreciate any advice.
