Did you know that as a resident of Los Angeles, you have an attorney? The City Attorney is elected to represent and fight for the people of Los Angeles and to serve as the City's lawyer. Deputy Attorney General Marissa Roy recently announced her campaign for Los Angeles City Attorney, campaigning to protect workers from wage theft, renters from illegal evictions, and consumers from fraud. Marissa is running against our current City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto. In stark contrast, Hydee has opposed affordable housing for Los Angelenos, sued journalists, prosecuted protesters, and surveilled the emails of her employees.Find out more about Marissa and her campaign here. Fatal and devastating fires recently upturned the lives of many Los Angelenos. Even now, with the fires thankfully extinguished, things aren't back to normal. As you may know, we record several episodes in a day, that's allowed us to keep publishing during these difficult days. Some on our staff are still dealing with significant issues in the aftermath which have unfortunately prevented us from recording a show for you this week. As we take care of some real-life business, we wanted you to know we aren’t going anywhere, we’ll be back NEXT WEEK with more of the zany, mind-blowing, off the wall science, pop culture, news of the day nonsense you’ve come to expect from us.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
At our most recent BGB Actors Summit, Risa and Steve gathered with actors from all over the world- from Rio de Janeiro to Mumbai, from Glasgow to San Antonio, from Buffalo to all over Los Angeles. They offered the fundamental and practical steps necessary to nurture and rebuild your career, your collaboration with other creative professionals, and your art. These are essential practices that take you on the journey to success- from care for yourself and who you are as an artist through to expressing that art in and with the support of a strong creative community. And then, with that foundation and support- through training, practice, and a full creative life in conjunction with other artists- you have the tools to build an amazing reel, impactful headshots, scroll-stopping self-tapes,and relationships with representatives and the entire Industry. AND you get to be a full, happy, vibrant actor with whom everyone wants to work!We recorded the Summit so that we could share it with you here on The Acting Podcast, as Audio & Video. We are grateful that we could all come together in the midst of the LA fires that have devastated our Los Angeles communities, while, at the same time, Los Angelenos have come together for each other in the truest spirit of community. Listen in, watch the video, and share with anyone who needs to hear this. We invite you to join our amazing community of artists!More On RisaMore On SteveSubscribe! This week, the girls are two hermit crabs in search of a shell. They thank the Deep Dive Community for their concern, share the beautiful things Los Angelenos are doing to take care of each other and marvel at the resiliency of the human spirit. Then, June tells us to let them eat cake, HOW we want to eat it and WHEN. Take care of each other, Deep Divers. We love you. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On this episode of “Sara Gonzales Unfiltered," Sara and Matthew Marsden discuss the dynamics at play between the five living presidents at Jimmy Carter's funeral. Trump and Obama appeared rather chummy at times, and it's alleged that the two discussed needing an urgent meeting away from the funeral. Oh, to be a fly on that wall. Sara then asks Matthew about the politics at play in Los Angeles regarding the raging wildfires. Matthew does not hesitate, stating Newsom has failed the state with over-regulation and that the real burdens won't be visible until Los Angelenos attempt to rebuild their homes and their lives. Sara welcomes Texas GOP Chairman Abraham George, and the two discuss the heated Texas House speaker race. The episode concludes with Sara interviewing Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters, who provides a thorough explanation on how schools can combat woke ideology and protect our children from radical indoctrination. Sara is joined by BlazeTV contributor Matthew Marsden, Texas GOP Chairman Abraham George, and Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters. Learn more about your ad choices. President Trump calls on Gavin Newsom to resign as Los Angelenos ask - Where was the water? Where were the firefighters? What happened to the insurance protection? Where was the help? LA Mayor Karen Bass refuses to answer questions about her Ghana trip during one of the worst fires in California history as America grows ever more aware of democrat identity-politics incompetence. Californians now rightly ask where their BILLIONS went to build a nonexistent high speed rail system and a $7.5B water storage project that has never even come close to completion.
Los Angelenos tired of increased crime and rampant homelessness overwhelmingly voted out soft-on-crime, far-left district attorney George Gascón on Tuesday in favor of Nathan Hochman, a prosecutor with a more moderate approach. Hochman, a former federal prosecutor and a Republican-turned-independent, won the race with 61.5 percent of the vote to Gascón's 38.5 percent, according to Los Angeles County Registrar vote totals as of Wednesday morning. The Associated Press called the race for Hochman early Wednesday.
Subscribe to Throwing Fits on Substack. Charged up off those Beijing batteries. This week, Jimmy and Larry have a little save the date for all our Los Angelenos next week before running through sleeve length math, James reviews his new Rier fleece, proper quarter-zip croppage, marathon signs and voting stickers, Lawrence got hit by a car but cheated death and still made his dinner reservation, flying too close to the sun with flow team Instagram Stories bits, Zyn gets its big New York Times trend piece and we evaluate where it currently stands against cigarettes and vapes in 2024, Big Tobacco doesn't care about the culture war, A.P.C.'s Jean Touitou dropped his own wine, where non-alcoholic beverages meet millennial olive oil, Young Thug is finally free and much more.
Hosts Amanda Freitag and Daniel Holzman are on the West Coast where they welcome friends and business partners Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo to On the Line. Jon & Vinny changed the way Los Angelenos eat, literally, and on this episode they talk about their origin story, making their way from Florida to California, their early days of catering, opening restaurants in Los Angeles (animal, Son of a Gun, Jon & Vinny's, Petit Trois), and so much more! Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Keaton Talmadge, great-granddaughter of silent film comedic genius Buster Keaton and silent film star Natalie Talmadge. It's a good thing we love silent film as well as talkies because talkies we did with Keaton. What about you ask? Some things you might expect and some you might not. For instance, how at one time in her life, Keaton would mention the name Buster Keaton and get a blank stare. Was there ever such a time? We also talk about Buster's legacy in the ‘20s……of the 21st century, not 20th. We also learn about the outrageously famous and somewhat wacky Talmadge sisters. Los Angelenos today would know them from apartment buildings and street names in and around Hollywood. But their legacy, and that of their mother is not so much a lost story but one that isn't frequently told. It's a good one, especially if you like the ‘golden age of Hollywood.' We discussed at length on this episode We also hear about Keaton carrying on the acting tradition, when so many family members prior did not. Her voice-over work you have surely heard. We learn about her time learning acting in college, auditions and a strange but not so strange new company she started recently that isn't just for kids. This was a very fun episode and we learned a lot. And of course, this is the Rarified Heir Podcast and everyone has a story. This one goes back to the silent era.
As far as ensemble "a few days in the life of a bunch of people" movies go, Short Cuts is not only one of Robert Altman's best...it's one of the best anyone has ever made. He maintains a consistent tone and pace beautifully for over 3 hours. It's even pretty tense for a character study. Altman also ties all these Los Angelenos together brilliantly, even though Raymond Carver's short stories aren't inter-connected the way the film is. And that's the key word because this is a movie about people trying to make connections...and often failing miserably. The actors---Lemmon, Robbins, Moore, Tomlin, JJ and so many more---are mostly tremendous...with some notable exceptions (cough cough the baker). Just like Short Cuts itself, these characters are flawed, but they are oh so human and relatable. So get comfortable, but keep your clothes on as our 520th episode analyzes a truly excellent picture made by a master filmmaker. Well, Actually: Madeleine Stowe is in fact fully naked when she's posing for Julianne Moore's painting...we just don't see bottom nudity like we do with Moore later on. Also, Tim Robbins was in Pret A Porter, so he DID work with Altman again. Also also, Jack Lemmon died in 2001, not 2000. Sparkplug Coffee is your destination for spectacular beans. Congratulations are in order for Richard Blade. Los Angeles Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez will introduce a resolution declaring June 9, 2023, “RICHARD BLADE DAY," with the award presented on JUNE 6th for the best-selling author, world-renowned on-air personality and radio show host. It turns out Richard Blade may just be an "Imposter". Los Angelenos know him as the voice that introduced a generation to 80s music bands like Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Pet Shop Boys, INXS, and The Cure. In fact, you can still hear him seven days a week on SiriusXM's 1st Wave channel. However, the truth is that Richard Blade is ALSO a writer...and a good one at that. His latest book is Imposters, based on the true story of Mike Evans and John "JT" Thomas". Mike was one half of the morning show at KROQ in the early 80s. It was Mike that sat Richard down and told him this incredible story that Richard felt compelled to share with the world. It was a real treat to have Richard enter our virtual studios and we discovered so much more than we expected of his own unique story. As Richard might say, "It's gonna be great!" Billy Joel: The Video Album Volume II is another back and forth across Billy's discography. The ten selections here vary from promo reels shot in the 1970s, unvarnished black-and-white live footage and barebones soundstage performances in the early 80s, to full-blown stylized and choreographed productions from the peak of the MTV era. Once again, we're treated to a revue of how music videos progressed as an art form as MTV changed the way people consumed music and viewed the people who made it. Billy fans in particular can enjoy up-close-and-personal live footage of songs like “Los Angelenos” and “Everybody Loves You Now,” shot in a small club. And the cuts from Glass Houses also feature the band as they'd perform on stage or in rehearsal. These vignettes sit alongside the entry for “Uptown Girl,” arguably his most well-known video, along with other highly-dramatized productions for songs like “Allentown” and “The Longest Time.” Join us as we dig deep into BIlly Joel: The Video Album Volume II. ------ Email us: glasshousespodcast@gmail.com Glass Houses - A Billy Joel Podcast on the web / social media: Website: http://www.glasshousespod.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/glasshousespodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glasshousespod/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/glasshousespod Discord: https://discord.gg/6G6cMRFu7T Support the podcast: Paypal: https://paypal.me/glasshousespod Venmo: @MGrosvenor Produced by Michael Grosvenor & Jack Firneno for Groove Music Marketing

Hosted by Fritz Coleman and Louise Palanker, Media Path takes you along on a scenic tour through books, movies, TV, podcasts and music related to a given topic of captivation. We are exploring entertainment, politics, history, true crime, world events and all of their intriguing intersections. Go beyond binging with Media Path. “And now, here's Fritz Coleman with the weather.” For nearly four decades, Los Angelenos came to know and love Fritz Coleman through his gig as the weather reporter on KNBC, where his affable demeanor (honed in his early years of stand-up comedy) made him a staple of local news. But when he retired from his weather gig two years ago, Coleman knew he wasn't done working. “That 11 o'clock news kept me from a lot of things,” he recalls. “Now I could do all those things that massage my soul, be curious more, and discover more.” That's the impetus behind MEDIA PATH PODCAST, co-hosted by Fritz and Louise Palanker, veteran radio producer and documentarian. With 100 episodes released so far, MEDIA PATH is a look back at what has defined our media for the past half-century. With guests as eclectic as Congressional leader Adam Schiff, television legend Henry Winkler, Grammy winning songwriter Diane Warren, and “Double Dare” host Marc Summers, each week is a journey down a new path of remembering, learning, and reevaluating our shared memories and histories. Every show includes discussion of current cultural events and recommendations from the hosts, as well as extended, deep-dive discussions with figures who have had meaningful and memorable impact on the media world we experience. While many of the subjects will be familiar to Baby Boomers and Gen X'ers, the spirit of inquisitiveness, curiosity, and sharing that Fritz and Louise bring to each episode will ring familiar to newer generations who may be hearing about these subjects, people, and stories for the first time. For Louise Palanker, who has been producing radio entertainment for decades and successful podcasts since 2005, that sense of serious and thoughtful discovery and discussion is what drives the podcast: “We can rediscover the things that matter to us and celebrate what we love.” For Coleman, the show is a new way for him to share his passion and curiosity about the world in the same charitable spirit that earned him Congressional recognition as “Humanitarian of the Year” for his work with the American Red Cross. “It's a great release valve of the pent-up energy from forty years of weather reporting,” he says. Evan & Andrew are joined by Ena Da to discuss the detestable but also detestably catchy song Sugar. There are just so many problems. Not least, how do we understand "sugar" and "red velvet" in light of recent illuminations of Adam Levine's idea of romance? More fundamentally, is Maroon 5 even still a band? Or just five guys cosplaying as a rock band while they sing along to Mike Posner studio tracks? And why are they giving themselves out as wedding presents to unsuspecting Los Angelenos? Part 1 From the majestic peaks of the snow-capped Sierras to the parched valley of Payahuunadü, “the land of flowing water,” (Owens Valley, CA) Manzanar Diverted: When Water Become Dust is a brand new documentary having its national broadcast premiere on PBS's POV on July 18th, 2022. The film recounts more than 150 years of history, showing how Payahuunadu (Owens Valley, CA) is tied to the city of Los Angeles and how the forced removals of two peoples -the Nüümü (Paiute) and the Newe (Shoshone) who were marched out of the Valley in the 1860s and the Japanese Americans who were forcibly brought to Manzanar from their West Coast homes and incarcerated in a World War II concentration camp are intergenerationally connected. In addition, the film's central character is piyah (water) and the film's narrative weaves the intergenerational telling of settler colonialism violence, stolen waters from the Nüümü (Paiute) and the Newe (Shoshone) nations, cultural genocide, and more given the severe drought impacting Mother Earth and all that she provides. Payahuunadu (Owens Valley, CA) is beginning point of the Los Angeles Aqueduct that channels water to Los Angelenos. Tune in for this and more. Today's panelists discuss not only the film's importance but also how it relates to the ongoing water and environmental issues to protect all life that Mother Earth provides. In addition, there is a July 17th, 2022, Day of Action Impact: Remembering Forced Removals; Uplifting Water and Land Protectors. For information, visit the Manzanar Diverted website. Guests: • Kathy Bancroft (Nüümü [Paiute] Nation), and Anne Kaneko, director and producer of Manzanar Diverted: When Water Become Dust, and Jin Yoo-Kim join us for the first segment of today's program to provide listeners an critical and in-depth and intergenerational history of water in relationship to the Nüümü (Paiute) and the Newe (Shoshone) nation, Japanese Americans incarcerated at Manzanar, the City of Los Angeles, the importance of water as life, the corresponding day of action, and where listeners can watch the film. Los Angelenos is the second song on Streetlife Serenade and the 4th track on Songs in the Attic. The song was originally written with Rod Stewart in mind. If anyone can hook us up with Porchfest 2022, we'd greatly appreciate it. We didn't know what it was either until we recorded this episode. Now, it's all the rage. A new monument is designed to showcase the rich cultural history and beauty of the predominantly Black community in Crenshaw. A stop for the metro line is being added and usually the comes with gentrification and eradication of culture. So maybe the most critical goal of the project might be this: to show Los Angelenos and visitors to the city that the Crenshaw community—most famously portrayed on film in Akeelah and the Bee and Boyz n the Hood—isn't a neighborhood to be passed through. It's a destination worth traveling to. It's a community that is worthy of art, beauty, economic investment, and most importantly—honor and respect. Parts 1 and 2: From the majestic peaks of the snow-capped Sierras to the parched valley of Payahuunadü, “the land of flowing water,” (Owens Valley, CA) Manzanar Diverted: When Water Become Dust is a brand new film recounting more than 150 years of history, showing how Payahuunadu (Owens Valley, CA) is tied to the city of Los Angeles and how the forced removals of two peoples -the Nüümü (Paiute) and the Newe (Shoshone) who were marched out of the Valley in the 1860s and the Japanese Americans who were forcibly brought to Manzanar from their West Coast homes and incarcerated in a World War II concentration camp are intergenerationally connected. There are several free, public screening of the film, including on 11/4/2021 at the Los Angeles Historic State Park in the traditional territories of the Tongva/Gabrielino nations. Guest: • Kathy Bancroft (Nüümü [Paiute] Nation), and Anne Kaneko, director and producer of Manzanar Diverted: When Water Become Dust, joins us for the entire hour to provide listeners an critical and in-depth and intergenerational history of water in relationship to the Nüümü (Paiute) and the Newe (Shoshone) nation, Japanese Americans incarcerated at Manzanar, the City of Los Angeles, and the importance of water as life. Q&A on the Showtime series The L Word: Generation Q with actor Rosanny Zayas. Moderated by Mara Webster, In Creative Company. Bette Porter, Shane McCutcheon, and Alice Pieszecki intermingle with a younger generation of Los Angelenos experiencing love, heartbreak, sex, setbacks, and success.
It turns out Richard Blade may just be an "Imposter". Los Angelenos know him as the voice that introduced a generation to bands like Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Pet Shop Boys, INXS, and The Cure. In episode 9, Kenny, Arnaz, and Del, discuss three movies that deal with the power of nature. First, they take us inside a 10.0 Earthquake that is rocking (pun intended) Los Angeles and the only hope for Los Angelenos is a chief engineer and a rookie scientist. Then, the Brothers take us to Puerto Rico in the midst of a category 5 Hurricane, where a heist is in progress and two cops get caught in the middle of it all. Finally, the Brothers take a look at a team of evolutionary immortals, whose centuries old crusade shape the history of mankind. Using their patented 3P rating system of "Play, Pass, Pause" they'll decide if these movies are or are not worthy of your attention. 10.0 Earthquake (2014) Amazon Prime (33:13) Force of Nature (2020) - VOD (47:12) The Old Guard (2020) – Netflix (1:03:52) Thank you for listening and please subscribe and rate us wherever you listen to podcasts! If you’re on social media, browsing horror content online, you’ve likely seen a few of the wonderfully goofy “self-isolating” Michael Myers videos floating around. Now, it’s time to meet the man behind the (Myers) mask: Craig Layton!Unlike Michael Myers, Craig talks and he had a lot to say about his videos, his history as a horror fan, his frustrations with online content theft, his hopes for future collaborations, and he even offered some valuable tips/encouragement for fellow independent filmmakers. If you enjoyed this episode, please share it with your friends! And, if you love the HorrorFam.com Podcast and want to support it, please consider donating via PayPal (button in the sidebar) or Patreon. ♥Links for MORE Craig Layton:Follow Craig on Twitter: @craiglayton07Follow Craig on Instagram: @BadPhotoshopGuySubscribe to Craig’s videos on YouTube: YouTube.com/MrCraigLaytonUpdate (7/11/2020): Since recording this episode, Craig Layton has updated the visible display name on his online platforms from “BadPhotoshopGuy” to “StabbyTimeTV;” however, the links above are still correct/valid URLs.An Important Note from Lauren Spear:Image by Gerd Altmann from PixabayWhen listening to this episode, I think it’s important to remember that Mr. Craig Layton is based in Nova Scotia, Canada.I realized, upon re-listening to my discussion with him to edit/polish the episode, that some of his comments regarding the current pandemic/lockdown (and even some of his comments regarding Halloween mask availability back in the day!) may confuse some of our American listeners — particularly those who hail from Los Angeles (where I’m based). While Nova Scotia eased nearly all of their COVID-19 restrictions on May 1st and, as of this writing, essentially lifted their “lockdown” in full on July 3rd, that is not the case in the United States. Especially not in my hometown of Los Angeles, where we’re still under very strict lockdown/stay-at-home orders.Anyway, I didn’t want any of my fellow Los Angelenos (or anyone else still in active/strict pandemic lockdown) hearing Craig’s statements about the quarantine ending and returning to his full-time job to get needlessly excited/confused.PLEASE continue to follow the lockdown guidelines for YOUR area. If we all continue to work together, we may still have a chance to save Halloween 2020. (Prayer’s up!).That said, I hope you enjoy Episode 13 of the HorrorFam.com Podcast! It was a pleasure talking to Mr. Layton about his humorous take on Halloween‘s Michael Myers and his history as a horror fan and independent filmmaker. Hang in there, Everybody!! WEAR YOUR MASKS, even if it’s a Michael Myers’ mask. ~Lauren*FULL Written Transcript: https://horrorfam.com/craig-layton-interview
In this episode of "Ojai: Talk of the Town," we check in with Ojai's Rotie's co-owner and chef, Claud Mann. A wonderful storyteller, Claud talks about being on the front lines feeding Ojai residents during this pandemic, trying to keep as many of his talented staff employed as possible. Claud talks about the business of restaurants, the low-profit margins, the hard work, and that moment when a chef realizes who he's cooking for, and why. We talk about what Ojai might look like after the stay-at-home order is lifted and millions of Los Angelenos, cooped up for months, are looking for an escape. We talk about how so many people are baking during this quarantine, and the chef makes a generous offer — contact him at Ojai Rotie and he will teach you about sourdough, with some training and a simple recipe. After growing up in the Bay Area — training as an actor as well as learning his way around a kitchen — Mann fed AIDs victims, before moving to Los Angeles, meeting the love of his wife, the renowned singer Perla Batalla, then getting out of the restaurant business to raise his family. When a new opportunity came knocking, he was ready, developing with Turner Broadcasting Systems and their vast film archives, a show called "Dinner & A Movie," pairing Chef Claud's creations with comedian-hosts. The show ran 900 episodes from 1995 to 2011. But when it became clear that the network wanted to him to pitch unhealthy food products, it was time to move on to the next stage of his life, developing healthy nutrition programs for Santa Barbara County students, funded by the Orfalea Foundation. We also talk about Mann's obsession with the Memphis Barbecue Festival, where after being introduced to it as a correspondent for Southern Living, he was inspired to put together a crew to take on the world's best pitmasters. Listen for the surprise ending to that story. Next year, second week of May, there may be well an Ojai barbecue crew in Memphis. Reading and watching recommendations from our conversation include Harold McGee's classic, "On Food & Cooking: The Science and Lore of the Kitchen." And the Mandarin language show on Netflix, "Flavorful Origins." We agree that small-town life is the best. That his wife's career has really taken off since we moved here, and how wonderful it was to see his wife and daughter singing their hearts out on stage at Libbey Bowl. What connects his kitchen skills and his wife's singing skills is that they are both gifted people, and they are sharing their gifts with Ojai. In the ending monologue, I talk about my encounter with Pulitzer-prize winner Jonathan Gold, and how he taught me that food is at the heart of a culture. We do not talk about the Sumerian cuneiform, the CA-25 district congressional race or the creation of the Oxford English dictionary.
Andy Keiler hosts this show but, for those that aren't familiar with his music, has also put out almost 50 albums as AndyK. Born in Reston, VA, he grew up in a musical family obsessed with record collecting. He started playing piano and keyboards at age 5 and took up guitar at 14. After attending Jam for Man and numerous shows in DC, he formed his own funk rock band called Blotter Otter with Mike Tarr and Dennis Hoy. In college at Emory University, he continued his musical education and expanded his repertoire with turntables and a sampler, DJing parties and putting out his first solo albums. He explored several genres at once like musical heroes the Beastie Boys and Red Hot Chili Peppers, playing a blend of rock, punk, funk, and hip hop. After moving to Los Angeles, he continued to produce music for his students while also collaborating with other musicians in bands such as Ramona and the Red Lights, the Singularity, Junior Blind, Danimal, and currently Los Angelenos. Special guest Derek Douglas interviews AndyK as he describes his musical journey that has always been heavily influenced by Northern Virginia and explains why he started the Jams for Man podcast. You can find more of his music at https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/andyk/319141795 particularly his newest album Gun n Bass. He also has a Bandcamp site at atothek.bandcamp.com and a Soundcloud page at https://soundcloud.com/user7308315.
Jeff Green is Managing Director of Global Occupier Services and Leader of The Automotive Advisory Group at Cushman & Wakefield. As a recent transplant from New York, the first thing one notices is the love Los Angelenos have for their cars. Whether they are pick-up trucks, new electric vehicles or old vintage sports cars, automobiles are the clear method of choice for transportation here. While this may be an obvious fact of life for those already living in sunny Los Angeles, as an east coaster, it certainly takes some getting used to. To help me make sense of the LA transportation scene and its impact on commercial real estate, I recently spoke with Cushman & Wakefield Executive Directors Justin Collins and Kevin Turner, where we shared some of our reactions and commentary around the latest report in the company’s “Tech Disruptor Series”, entitled Mobility Shifts and Commercial Real Estate - Implications of Ridesharing; Autonomous Vehicles; Micro-mobility and Electric Vehicles. Highlights from our conversation include: · Parking Infrastructure o With most buildings in the Downtown LA area having been built in the early 1980s, companies and local government officials are contending with outdated city codes and ordinances that no longer apply to transportation today. o Today, building owners and occupiers have to consider things like electric vehicles and the prerequisite charging stations, as well as ridesharing zones (i.e. designated pick-up and drop-off locations.) · Commercial Trucking and Ports o As the West Coast’s largest and busiest port, stakeholders in Los Angeles are examining ways to improve efficiencies across all aspects of the industry, from how autonomous vehicles will impact trucks and truck drivers to warehouses and logistics. Issues like dock availability, warehouse floor teams, queuing lanes and even amenities for the truck drivers moving in and out of the port, are all evolving, with companies leveraging all the management technology at their disposal to improve efficiency. · The Olympics in 2028 o The podcast even touched on the impending 2028 Olympics. While it is still a decade away, we speculated on the changes in infrastructure the city would need to make in order to accommodate the games and its millions of attendees.

Authors Ivy Pochoda and Galt Niederhoffer join co-hosts Eric Newman and Medaya Ocher to talk about their new noir novels. Pochoda's heralded Wonder Valley weaves a tale of striving, wayward Los Angelenos, from Skid Row through gentrifying neighborhoods and out to a New Age Desert commune; a 21st Century update of the gloom beneath LA's glamour. Niederhoffer's intimate Poison, a harrowing portrait of betrayal, is drawn from the author's own experience (she accused her ex-partner of trying to murder her); which inspires a discussion about “gaslighting,” MeToo, and the need to challenge the underlying logic of patriarchy that informs these treacherous times. Also, author and avid reader Dan Lopez returns to recommend Sadness is a White Bird by Moriel Rothman-Zecher.

What Michaela Watkins does in Casual, Hulu's dramedy about self-involved Los Angelenos, is low-key remarkable. Her character, Valerie, is outwardly pulled together and the smartest woman in the room. But inwardly, she's falling apart, constantly dragged down in spirals of her own narcissism and self doubt. Watkins's trick is that she makes this both relatable and weirdly sympathetic. You can hate Valerie -- and many devoted Casual viewers do -- but you can never quite escape all the ways she's just like you. That means Michaela and Todd had a lot to talk about when it comes to her acting technique, but also what it means to make a show about such rich, privileged people in a world where those monikers increasingly sound like epithets. Take a gander at Billy Joel's major label sophomore slump, 1974's "Streetlife Serenade." Rushed into the studio before he had a chance to write much new material, Joel scraped the bottom of the barrel and mostly came up with fingernails full of splinters. Features: "The Entertainer," "Los Angelenos," "Root Beer Rag" and "Streetlife Serenader." #billyjoel #joelhole
Don't believe Los Angeles has always been a creative city or that Los Angelenos love local history? Don't believe it. Listen to Los Angeles Hashtags Itself's conversation with Artbound executive producer Juan Devis and learn what can happen when you dedicate multiple online platforms, streaming video capabilities, and the power of social networks to telling the story of Southern California's rich and diverse arts and cultural offerings.
Jennifer Pashley is the guest. Her debut novel The Scamp is available now from Tin House Books. Jennifer and I had a mix-up on time. She thought we were scheduled for a different day. She also had a migraine headache. She got into an Uber with a migraine and raced across Los Angeles to be here. Shanna Mahin (my guest in Episode 365) was with her. I had to be somewhere in an hour. We were up against the clock but we got it done. Jennifer is from New York state and is one of the rare people I've met who has lived in the same place for her entire life. Maybe it's not that rare. It seems rare to me. I live in Los Angeles and most people in Los Angeles seem to have come here from somewhere else, or else they left at some point and then came back. I do know a few Los Angelenos who never left. I'm not denigrating that choice, by the way. I envy it. I envy people who have a real sense of place. But I'm sure there are downsides to it, too. The grass is always greener, and so on. Anyway, it was great fun talking with Jennifer, migraine headache and all. My monologue is about time and sleep-deprivation, the two main themes of my life right now, and maybe always. I feel like I have a lot to do and lack the time and/or brain power to do it. But of course this is temporary, I think it's temporary. Everything is temporary. It had better be temporary. It's temporary. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Today’s show is about casual hookups, friends with benefits, and all different types of non-committal sex. What exactly constitutes casual sex? Emily and Menace welcome a panel of four single Los Angelenos to navigate the seas of sex without commitment! Together, they share and compare unique personal stories, experiences, and opinions about making love sans the love part. The table offers up their own take on how to hang in this new hookup culture, as well as the quality of one night stand sex and the importance of oral. They also tackle an email that raises the issue of slut-shaming. Is there still a stigma associated with women having casual sex? This Sex With Emily podcast is a melting pot of stories from singles, sexual experiences, and defining what casual sex is for each person. Whether you’re looking for more, or keeping as little as possible, this show is one everyone can relate to and is not to be missed!
