AP records the same voice through four very different microphones and sends the files around without revealing what they are. George, Robert, Robbo and a bunch of trusted audio ears rank them purely on what they hear. Then the mics are revealed. The result is a pretty good reminder that price, reputation and specifications only tell you so much. What matters is how a microphone actually sounds on the voice and for the job you need it to do. And just to make the point beautifully, Robbo put the overall winner dead last. LIBSYN FULL DESCRIPTION It's time to Guess That Mic. AP started out making a sample of one microphone for someone. As tends to happen around here, that simple job turned into four microphones, multiple preamps, a pile of audio files and a blind listening test involving ten people. The idea was simple. Listen to four mystery microphones on AP's voice. Don't worry about the badge, the price or what you think you're supposed to like. Just rank them. The result? Almost nobody agreed. George liked 3, 4, 2, 1. Robert went 4, 3, 2, 1. Robbo went 2, 1, 4, 3. And the more people AP asked, the more interesting the results became. Once all ten votes were scored, the final result was: 1st, Mic 3, 27 points Equal 2nd, Mic 2, 25 points Equal 2nd, Mic 4, 25 points 4th, Mic 1, 23 points So what were they? THE BIG REVEAL Mic 1 Microtech Gefell M 92.1 S tube condenser with M7 capsule Recorded through a Grace m101 Mic 2 Microtech Gefell M 930 art Mic 3 Austrian Audio OC818 Mic 4 AKG C414 EB with nylon CK12 capsule Mics 2, 3 and 4 were recorded through a Neve 1073. No processing or high pass filtering was deliberately added to the comparison. And yes, the Austrian Audio OC818 won the overall vote. Robbo ranked it last. Which rather neatly sums up the entire episode. This was never intended to be a scientific microphone test. It was about something arguably more useful, what happens when people actually listen without knowing the name or price printed on the microphone. A mic one person describes as smooth and full, someone else hears as dark. One person hears useful presence, someone else hears too much top end. One listener's first choice becomes another listener's fourth. Not over hyped anywhere with a good natural midrange. Mike guessed it might be a 416 and picked it as his favourite "by a country mile". Mic 2: Sibilant around 7.5 kHz, less lower mids and consequently less full sounding. Definitely not Mike's cup of tea. Mic 3: Subdued top end with a very full bottom end. Mike wondered whether it might be a ribbon. Mic 4: Mike thought this sounded like a TLM 103, noting the bass lift and saying he would probably reduce some of that for AP's voice. Matt McKenzie Smith Mic 1: Matt heard harmonic resonances around 470 Hz and 980 Hz, plus some additional energy around 2.5 kHz. Mic 2: "Sounds lovely", with a little more prominence around the 4 to 5 kHz area. Mic 3: Hotter in the low end and sounding great, although Matt noticed a prominent phase offset. Mic 4: Similar phase offset, along with great low end extension. Matt's final ranking was: 3, 4, 2, 1 And perhaps that is the real conclusion of the whole exercise. There isn't a microphone that everybody is going to prefer. The expensive one isn't automatically better. The one with the flattering frequency response on paper isn't automatically better. And a microphone that sounds gorgeous solo might not necessarily be the one you'd choose when that voice has to fight its way through a commercial mix. The show details viewing techniques for globular and open clusters—highlighting targets like the egg-shaped globular M19, the historical Ptolemy's Cluster (M7), and the beginner-friendly M23. Additionally, they explore iconic Milky Way nebulae, including the active star-forming Lagoon Nebula (M8) and the nearby Trifid Nebula (M20) with its distinctive three-lobed dark dust lanes.   1. M10 & M12 (Globular Clusters in Ophiuchus) - Binoculars: Sweeping through central Ophiuchus reveals these two bright globulars in the same binocular field. They appear as soft, distinct bluishgray spheres. - Telescope: In an 8-inch telescope, M12 resolves well into individual stars across its core, while M10 appears somewhat more tightly packed, brighter toward the center, and slightly fuzzier at the edges. - Compare the two side-by-side: Despite being located near each other in our sky, M12 has lost a significant portion of its lower-mass stars due to repeated passages through the Milky Way's dense galactic disk.   2. M107 (Globular Cluster in Ophiuchus) - Binoculars: A challenging target for binoculars; requires dark skies and averted vision to spot as a minute, faint smudge. - Telescope: Small-to-medium telescopes reveal a delicate, somewhat un-concentrated patch of light with a loose core. - M107 contains noticeable dark dust lanes or obscuring regions, which is relatively rare for a globular cluster, giving it a unique visual texture in medium-to-large scopes.   3. M9 (Globular Cluster in Ophiuchus) - Binoculars: Similar in scale to M107, though slightly brighter and easier to catch in 10x50s on a clear night. - Telescope: Small scopes show a bright, unresolved central nucleus surrounded by a faint, grainy halo. - M9 is located remarkably close to the Galactic Centre—only about 5,500 light-years away from it. It lies near dark nebulae like Barnard 64, making the surrounding starfield visually compelling.   4. M19 & M62 (Globular Clusters in Ophiuchus) - Binoculars: Separated by about 4 degrees, both fit easily into a standard binocular field of view south of M10/M12. They look like round, soft patches brightening toward their centers, with M19 appearing noticeably brighter. - Telescope: Smaller telescopes show compact, fuzzy disks. Moderate magnification begins resolving outer stars on both. - M19 is famous for being one of the most distinctly oblate (egg-shaped) globular clusters known, likely due to tidal forces from its proximity to the galactic core. - M62 has an asymmetric core, heavily deformed by galactic tidal forces, and hosts a rich population of millisecond pulsars.   5. M6 (The Butterfly Cluster) & M7 (Ptolemy's Cluster) Scorpius - Naked Eye: Both are bright and obvious to the naked eye under dark skies near the "stinger" of Scorpius. - Binoculars: Binoculars provide the absolute best view. Both clusters fit together in a wide 10x50 field. M7 is larger and brighter; M6 displays a striking butterfly-like star arrangement. - M7 is one of the oldest recorded deep-sky objects, noted by Ptolemy in 130 AD. - The orange giant star BM Scorpii, which sits on the wing of the "Butterfly" in M6 and adds a nice pop of stellar color contrast.   6. M8 (The Lagoon Nebula) Sagittarius - Naked Eye: Appears as a distinct, hazy patch in the Milky Way band above Scorpius. - Binoculars: Shows as a huge, glowing oval patch—larger than the full Moon—with several bright stars embedded within it. - Telescope / Filters: A UHC or O-III filter enhances the dark dust lane ("the lagoon") bisecting the bright nebulosity. - M8 is an active star-forming region containing Bok globules (collapsing clouds of protostellar gas) and the famous "Hourglass Nebula" region at its core.   7. M20 (The Trifid Nebula) Sagittarius - Binoculars: Located just 1.4 degrees northwest of M8. Appears as a faint, ghostly glow surrounding a central triple/multiple star system. - Telescope: Medium scopes under dark skies reveal the dark dust lanes splitting the bright emission portion into three distinct lobes. - M20 is a rare "triple threat" nebula containing an emission nebula (red in photos), a reflection nebula (blue in photos), and a dark dust lane network (Barnard 85) that gives it its name.   8. M21 (Open Cluster) Sagittarius - Binoculars: Situated right next to M20. Appears as a small, compact, bright knot of stars. - Telescope: Low-power views easily resolve 20–30 stars packed tightly together. - The "Trifid Trio": In wide-field eyepieces or binoculars, you can view M8, M20, and M21 all in a single field of view, offering one of the most spectacular Milky Way vistas available to visual observers.   9. M23 (Open Cluster) Sagittarius - Telescope: Low magnification is key. Small telescopes easily resolve over 80–100 stars spread across a wide field in subtle arc-like patterns. - M23 sits against a rich background Milky Way star field, making low-power wide-field views ideal. Depuis l'arrivée de la puce M1 en 2020, Apple avançait avec un calendrier presque parfaitement régulier. Mais cette mécanique semble désormais s'emballer. Selon Mark Gurman, de Bloomberg, la firme aurait déjà terminé la conception de sa puce M7, seulement six mois après celle de la M6, alors même que les premiers produits équipés de cette dernière ne sont pas attendus avant la fin de 2026.La feuille de route reste officieuse, Apple n'ayant rien confirmé. Les premiers Mac dotés d'une puce M6 arriveraient donc à la fin de cette année, avant une génération M7 dès le début de 2027. Les versions M7 Pro et M7 Max suivraient à la fin de 2027, puis le M7 Ultra en 2028. La génération M6 pourrait ainsi connaître une carrière particulièrement courte. Apple aurait même abandonné les versions M6 Pro et Max afin d'accélérer le passage à la génération suivante. Pour Mark Gurman, cette cadence montre surtout que l'intelligence artificielle ne constitue plus une simple fonction ajoutée aux processeurs Apple : elle influence désormais directement leur architecture et leur calendrier de développement.Le chiffre le plus spectaculaire concerne la mémoire. Le futur M7 Ultra serait conçu pour gérer jusqu'à 1,5 téraoctet de mémoire unifiée. Dans les Mac Apple Silicon, cette mémoire est partagée entre le processeur central et la puce graphique, ce qui facilite le traitement de charges lourdes. Une telle capacité représenterait environ le double de celle envisagée pour le M5 Ultra et l'équivalent de la mémoire de 96 MacBook Air d'entrée de gamme réunis. Mais rien ne garantit qu'Apple commercialisera réellement cette configuration. La décision dépendra du marché des composants, alors que la mémoire reste rare et coûteuse. Tim Cook a déjà justifié de récentes hausses de prix des Mac par l'augmentation du coût de la RAM.Une machine équipée de 1,5 téraoctet cumulerait donc tous les facteurs inflationnistes : beaucoup de mémoire, sur un composant cher, dans un produit très haut de gamme. The company is said to be skipping the M6 Pro and M6 Max entirely, jumping from the M5 generation straight to the M7 for its high-end laptops. A standard M6 chip will still arrive this year in an entry-level ‌MacBook Pro‌, but there will apparently be no Pro or Max variant in that family.As a result, Apple's first high-end OLED laptop will use the existing M5 Pro and M5 Max chips rather than newer silicon. First-generation buyers would therefore be paying a premium for a redesigned machine featuring the same processors already found in the current ‌MacBook Pro‌, with M7 Pro and M7 Max models expected to follow in the second half of 2027.The launch window remains fluid. The device was long expected to arrive in late 2026, but memory chip constraints and Apple's recent price increases have pushed it toward early 2027. A second-generation model with M7 chips is already planned for late 2027, meaning the first Ultra could remain on sale for a relatively short window.The overlapping releases make for a crowded and confusing roadmap. Across roughly a year, Apple is expected to ship a base M6 ‌MacBook Pro‌, a redesigned base M7 model in the first half of 2027, two M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Ultramodels, their eventual M7 Pro and M7 Max successors, and perhaps new high-end ‌MacBook Pro‌ models with the M7 Pro and M7 Max. Notably, the entry-level M7 model is set to get the new design first, ahead of the pricier high-end ‌MacBook Pro‌ models.The headline changes are reserved for the top-tier "Ultra" model. It is expected to be the first Mac with an OLED display, using the same hybrid tandem ‌OLED‌ technology as the iPad Pro, along with the first touchscreen on a Mac, a Dynamic Island in place of the notch, and a thinner chassis. Both 14-inch and 16-inch sizes are expected. Built-in cellular connectivity for the first time on a Mac is also rumored.Apple is reportedly positioning touch as “touch-friendly, not touch-first," letting users move between touch, trackpad, and keyboard rather than treating the Mac like an iPad. That marks a reversal for a company that long resisted the idea. Steve Jobs argued in 2010 that vertical touchscreens cause arm fatigue, and as recently as 2021 hardware chief John Ternus said the Mac was "totally optimized for indirect input."Signs of the shift are already visible in macOS 27 Golden Gate, which adds direct touch control to Sidecar, so users can tap and interact with macOS elements using a finger on an ‌iPad‌. A reinforced hinge is also expected, so the display does not wobble when tapped. Pricing is likely to be steep. Apple raised prices across the Mac lineup in June, and the current 14-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌ now starts at $1,999, rising to $2,499 with the M5 Pro chip and $4,099 for an M5 Max.
