Remote Cameras at Weddings

Behind the Shot - Video

I've always been fascinated by the use of Remote Cameras, but it's not something I've had the chance to try, unfortunately. The last time I cover it on the show was on the episode Using Remote Cameras with Canon Explorer of Light David Bergman, and then I also had the legendary Peter Read Miller Miller talking about how he used them in Sports Photography. I, however, had never thought about using them for Wedding Photo Photography, that is until I was talking to Canon Explorer of Light Bob Davis at Imaging USA this year. His presentation on the Canon stage was on just that topic, and after watching how he was using remote cameras, in his case for both wedding and wildlife photo, I knew this would be a conversation a lot of people might find fascinating. Bob & Dawn Davis are an international wedding photography and design husband and wife team based in the Chicagoland area. When I first met them back in 2020 for an interview at WPPI, it was immediately clear that this couple was an amazing team. I've since seen them both together, or as part of a panel, or individually, on the Canon stage at a conference multiple times, and the passion they bring to what they teach is amazing. What a lot of people don't know is Bob's history behind the camera. Bob began his career in the newspaper industry as a photojournalist, and over drinks one day, while we were looking through his old Chicago Bulls photos on his phone, I was blown away how this guy can shoot anything so damn well. The last time he was on the show was for an episode about Bob and Dawn's wildlife photography: Photograph in the Wild. Bob & Dawn Davis Photography & Design has a client list reads like a “Who's Who” of entertainment's elite. They have had the honor of photographing “A” list weddings such as Eva Longoria & Tony Parker's wedding in Paris, Salma Hayek & François-Henri Pinault's wedding in Italy, La La Vazquez & Carmelo Anthony's TV wedding in New York, Tracey Edmonds & Eddie Murphy's wedding in Bora Bora, ABC's TV show The Bachelorette Ashley's wedding to J.P. in California, along with many other fabulous events with Oprah Winfrey. Bob was also commissioned to work on the book America 24/7 that was featured on the Oprah Winfrey show and was a New York Times Best Seller. Their work has been featured in publications such as People, OK, O Magazine, InStyle, Inside Weddings, Town & Country, Munaluchi, Grace Ormonde, Modern Luxury Brides, The Knot, Ritz-Carlton magazine, Professional Photographer, Rangefinder, Popular Photography and more. Bob is in that small and highly elite group of photographers known as Canon Explorers of Light, along with being a member of the Westcott Top Pro Elite, SanDisk Extreme Team, and a ProMedia Gear Influencer. Together Bob and Dawn are the authors of two books, Lights Camera Capture, and We're Engaged! Earlier I used the word "passion" when talking about their willingness to teach and share their craft, but that word can be used to describe many areas of Bob and Dawn's world. They are passionate about their faith, their marriage, their family, and making the best of their lives. This a power couple. Bob and Dawn also lead wildlife photo workshops to places around the world, like Africa, or Alaska for their Alaska Brown Bear Adventure Workshop, which at the time of this writing still has 3 spots left for their next trip in Sept of 2025. Join Canon Explorer of Light Bob Davis and me as we do a deep dive into how Bob and Dawn use remote cameras on their wedding shoots, and we'll touch a little on how they use them for wildlife shoots too, on this episode of Behind the Shot. A brand of camera that we've talked quite a bit about on this show is Pentax, but in every episode where this brand came up, the same book and author gets brought up as a great resource for screw mount Pentax and Takumar lenses, which is "The Ultimate/Definitive Asahi Pentax Collector's Guide 1952-1977" by Gerjan van Oosten.  While this is a great book to read, this is a podcast, so we like to talk to people, so for Episode 75, rather than continue to talk about a book, we went straight to the source and got the book's author, Gerjan van Oosten to join us! For this episode, we were missing Theo, but joining Anthony, Paul, Mike, and Gerjan are returning callers Patrick Casey and Wannes Scheipers.  Gerjan discusses some of his least favorite Takumar lenses, backwards compatibility of Takumar lenses, what's so special about the 8-element Super Takumar 50mm f/1.4 lenses, why the Spotmatic doesn't actually have a spot meter, what Honeywell had to do with Pentax, export market cameras like the Asahiflex H2 and Asahi Pentar, and a fun discussion about a prototype camera called the Pentax Metalica. In addition to Pentax camera and lens GAS, we get into discussions about why so many early SLRs had 58mm lenses, a little bit of Nikon history, Anthony's recent habit of breaking into churches, shooting the Horseman Convertible, and Mike's thoughts on the Leica M5. Gerjan covers his book and that there's three editions of the camera, all with significant changes from the earlier versions.  Only the latest 2023 edition is currently for sale direct from him, so if you're interested in buying this excellent book straight from him, he sells them direct on eBay at the following link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/335212596808 We had a lot of fun recording this episode, but we will be taking a break from new shows for a little while.  Although we have some ideas for future shows, nothing is planned at the moment, nor do we know when the next episode will be recorded, so be sure to look out for our show announcements on our Camerosity Podcast Facebook page, the Camerosity Discord server, and right here on mikeeckman.com. We usually record every other Monday and announcements, along with the Zoom link are typically shared 2-3 days in advance. In the first episode of Season 3 of the Camerosity Podcast, the guys and I opened up the call-in lines for the first time since late July and asked everyone who has travelled lately, what their ideal travel cameras are.  When deciding to take some cameras on a trip, what makes the cut or doesn't, and why.  In addition to travelling with cameras, what are your tips for getting through airport security, is it worth getting your film hand checked, or should you separate your film from your cameras into separate luggage. Joining Anthony, Paul, Theo, and Mike are returning callers Mark Faulkner, Patrick Rapps, John Roberts, Howard Sandler, and first time callers Maxwell Whitaker, Mina Saleeb, and Kevin Knipp who all help us answer those questions. In addition to our travel tips, we also stray into the world of mirror lenses and other strange lenses of the 20th century like the Voigtländer Zoomar, KMZ Rubin-1, and the Minolta Rokkor-X 40-80mm f/2.8 "Gear Box Lens".  As we often do, much praise is heaped upon Voigtländer and the Bessamatic SLR and Cosina Bessa Rangefinders, we share our opinions of Minox submini cameras, the Carl Zeiss Jena Werra, AGFA Karat 36, plus many, many others. Later, hear Anthony admit that he's struggling with the decision of whether he needs to rebuy another Leica M3, whether or not people mix digital and film on vacations, and how many times Paul has bought the same camera more than once. As always, the topics we discuss on the Camerosity Podcast are influenced by you!  Please don't feel like you have to be an expert on a specific type of camera, or have the level of knowledge on par with other people on the show.  We LOVE people who are new to shooting and are interested in having an episode dedicated to people new to the hobby, so please don't consider your knowledge level to be a prerequisite for joining! The guys and I rarely know where each episode is going to go until it happens, so if you'd like to join us on a future episode, be sure to look out for our show announcements on our Camerosity Podcast Facebook page, and right here on mikeeckman.com.  We usually record every other Monday and announcements, along with the Zoom link are typically shared 2-3 days in advance. Todd has been on the show before, but in this the 51th episode, he gets center stage, talking of his role at the Eastman Museum, the origins of George Eastman and how his company got started.  In this episode, you'll learn about George Eastman making dry plates in his mother's kitchen, his motivation for making the original 1888 Kodak, where the name "Kodak" comes from, early 20th century Kodaks, prewar, postwar, and everything in between. Also joining us on the show is the only person in the US I would trust with Kodak Retina repair, Paul Barden.  Back in 2022, long time Retina guru Chris Sherlock hung up his lens spanners and retired from Retina repair.  Not willing to leave a void in quality Retina service, Chris passed on his knowledge to Paul, who lives on the west coast of the United States.  This not only means that there is still a quality option for Retina repair, but for those of you in the US, shipping rates are much cheaper than to New Zealand!  Listen to this episode as Paul talks about his work repairing Retinas, what some of his favorite models are, and what models he does and doesn't repair. In addition to Todd and Paul's massive amount of Kodak knowledge, we go deep into some of the best Kodak cameras ever made, the Kodaks Ektra, Medalist, Monitor, and Regent get discussed here.  We talk about Walter Dorwin Teague, Dr. August Nagel, and Hubert Nerwin.  Mike shares what his all time favorite Retina is to shoot, Anthony discusses his nomination for a medium format Retina, Todd and Mike talk about Joe Mihayli and his contributions to Kodak's legacy. As always, the topics we discuss on the Camerosity Podcast are influenced by you!  We would love to hear from more listeners, especially those who are new to shooting film or collecting cameras. Our next episode of the Camerosity Podcast will be our widest ever, as the gang discusses panorama photography and panoramic cameras.  If you've ever wanted to know what it's like to shoot a Hasselblad XPan, Soviet Horizont, Noblex, or a Widelux camera, this is the episode for you!  Episode 52 will be recorded on Friday, June 30th.  We hope to see you there! Why deal with 2 items, extra weight, extra movement, and the more time needed when using separate optics?  Skipper gives us the tech skinny on the BX-4HD Range, plus a look at the new hunting-appropriate, highly advanced 2-10x Leupold Mark 5 riflescope. We also talk through spotting scope selection; using a spotter with a reticle to calculate antler width on moose in Alaska when a bull must be 50 inches wider to be legal; adequate magnification for long-range shooting, and more. There are rankings in photography that I had no idea even existed. For example, the #1 Fearless Photographer in North America, and Top 3 in the World, for 2021 is Jason Vinson. He's also ranked as one of the Top 100 Fearless Photographers of all time. I am intrigued, and that alone makes me want to meet him. Jason is a multi-award winning wedding and documentary photographer, based out of Northwest Arkansas, and the awards list is impressive, with awards from Junebug Weddings, World Best Wedding Photos, ISPWP, Masters of Wedding Photography, Documentary Family Awards, and more. Recognitions like that bring with them an audience that wants to learn, and Jason is a skilled speaker, instructor, writer, and content creator for establishments such as WPPI, Portrait Master, Rangefinder, PPA, Fstoppers, to name a few. Jason is also a Stella Pro Ambassador, for the Stella Pro line of lighting from Light & Motion. I saw these lights for the first time at this year's WPPI, and again at NAB, and I am seriously impressed. I might need to get some of these. With all of that, I think the part on his "About" page that struck me is this list: lover of extreme sports self proclaimed beer snob dinosaur impersonator mexican food junky technology nerd Three of the five mean we will clearly be friends.
