Dr. Lynelle Schneeberg, PsyD, is a sleep psychologist, an assistant professor at the Yale School of Medicine, and Director of the Behavioral Sleep Program at Connecticut Children's Medical Center. She's also a Fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. She works with adults who have insomnia and has a particular passion for helping parents whose children have sleep difficulties. She is the author of "Become Your Child's Sleep Coach: The Bedtime Doctor's 5-Step Guide, Ages 3-10. "Today, Lynelle give us her expert advice and education on and around sleep difficulties experienced by new parents and parents of young children. Recognizing that sleep deprivation is a bona fide torture tactic, our discussion delves into the negative effects of interrupted sleep for new parents, which can affect them for months and even years. Lynelle clarifies the four stages of sleep, and how much of each stage we tend to require. She also explains how the body prioritizes deep sleep and can brilliantly adjust sleep cycles to compensate for those late-bedtime streaks or the evenings we're awake with insomnia or broken sleep. Lynelle debunks sleep myths (such as, "Can we only obtain deep sleep between the hours of 10pm and 2am?") and helps us to understand: healthy sleep architecture; the various kinds of insomnia; and, the benefits of micro-naps. She provides strategies for getting children to go to bed more easily, and tells us what to do - and what not to do - when it comes to getting good sleep back into your life. **********Down to Birth is sponsored by:Needed -- Optimal nutritional products to nourish yourself before, during, and after pregnancy DrinkLMNT -- Purchase LMNT today and receive a free sample kit. Teen Challenges (0:00:00) The rise in social media use has led some teens to go to extreme lengths to gain popularity. A popular method of gaining followers is to do trending social media challenges. These challenges range from silly tricks (like the water bottle challenge, where teens had to try and flip a water bottle and get it to land right-side up), to downright dangerous dares. In 2018 a viral challenge called the “Tide-Pod Challenge” encouraged teens to videotape themselves biting down on highly toxic Tide-Pods. In one year nearly 220 teens were hospitalized in one year because of this challenge. So what is it about these virtual challenges that appeal to teens? Why are they willing to forgo all common sense to get a few more followers? Here to discuss with us the addictive nature of teen challenges is child psychologist, Dr. Nicole Beurkens.   Money Conversations with Family (0:18:58) Depending on whether or not you are used to talking about this in the home or not, the topic of money is consistently uncomfortable. It's such a sensitive topic. But it should be something we can discuss openly with our family members. So how can we start having open, financial conversations with our spouse or our kids? To answer all of these questions and explain why we should talk about money in the home, we've invited Jen Smith, the founder of Modern Frugality, here with us today.   Teen Addiction (0:32:43) As many of you know, here at The Lisa Show, we try our best to broach important conversations. Sadly, some of the most important conversations we should be having are emotionally difficult or have stigmas surrounding them. Today, in an effort to break stigmas and open up helpful discussions, we've invited Susan Burrowes on the show. Susan is the author of Off the Rails: One Family's Journey Through Teen Addiction, in which she shares her experience as the mother of teenager dealing with addictions. And she is here to discuss ways to find hope and healing for families with teen addiction.   Virtual Reality (0:52:50) Virtual reality games have become more and more popular with kids and adults over the last few years. They've also been the subject of many sci-fi novels and movies like Ready Player One or even Jumanji. While many praise the Virtual Reality experience, others fear the idea of it replacing the real world. So, we wanted to get down to the bottom of Virtual reality and find out what's good about it and what might be dangerous. Here with us today is Robert Scoble, tech evangelist, to help us better understand what virtual reality is and its future.    Teens Teach Technology (1:07:05) Quarantine has made us more dependent on technology than ever before. But during this transition to near completely virtual lives, what about the generation that doesn't have the same knowledge about technology that we do? Many of these older adults are being left behind without any opportunitiesto learn how to use these devices. This is the mission of Teens Teach Technology, a youth organization led by teenagers dedicated to teaching older adults how to properly use their technology. Today, we're joined by their founder, Asmita Mittal, and Nicole Lau, their head of PR. They're here to talk with us about their efforts to make us more media literate.   The Last Blockbuster on Earth (1:20:30) There was something magical about taking a trip to a Blockbuster, checking out the new releases, re-watching classics, and grabbing snacks. Unfortunately, you can no longer find a Blockbuster on every corner, but there is one corner—the last corner in the world—where you can relive those golden days. The last Blockbuster on earth is still operating out of Bend, Oregon! Here to tell us how they've been able to stick it out for so long is store manager, Sandi Harding.   Sleep Training Kids (1:32:03) The routine goes something like this: you coerce your child into their pajamas and into brushing their teeth, you've read their favorite book (twice), made up a new bedtime story for them, and then spent the next 20 minutes letting your arm fall asleep in the hopes that the child curled up on it will too. Finally, you gingerly extricate your arm, tiptoe out, and get cozy in your own bed only to have your child walk in and announce that they can't sleep. This is a cycle that you rinse and repeat nightly. So how can we effectively sleep train both our littlest kids and our toddlers? Here to this question and discuss effective techniques for sleep training is a Fellow at the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and Director of the Behavioral Sleep Program at Connecticut Children's Medical Center, Dr. Lynelle Schneeberg.

COVIDsomnia is its own special brand of sleep disorder, brought on in one way or another by COVID-19. Sleep experts say it's not only the physical toll the virus is taking on the people who've been infected. It's also keeping people awake at night with worry about whether they or their loved ones will get sick, too. We cover COVIDsomnia this week with a couple of experts dealing with very different groups of patients. First, Neil talks with https://drschneeberg.com/ (Dr. Lynelle Schneeberg). She's an Assistant Professor at Yale School of Medicine and Director of the Behavioral Sleep Program at Connecticut Children's Medical Center. She's also the author of the terrific book for parents, https://amzn.to/3keeI4g (Become Your Child's Sleep Coach). (Affiliate link.) Then, we look at COVIDsomnia with Dr. Seema Khosla from the North Dakota Centre for Sleep. You might also have seen her just recently as the sleep expert on Good Morning America. Seema talks about the eleven patients in her practice who've tested positive. We cover a lot of ground in these two conversations. COVIDsomnia sparks discussion about everything from sleep apnea to delaying school start times. LINKAPALOOZA You've heard Dr. Schneeberg on the show before. She was first on with us last October to talk about her book, Become Your Child's Sleep Coach. She also joined the show February 10 to talk about sleep crutches and how they affect kids and adults. She came back in September to talk about wearable sleep trackers. And she was back again last week to talk about the crazy COVID dreams people have been having. That chat was an early intro to the COVIDsomnia conversation in this week's episode.

(*Lisa and Richie, discuss this!) Most of you would probably say cookies, a grilled cheese, or a yummy butter pasta. But if you've ever been to the Minnesota State Fair, you would see butter creations that put your sugar cookies to shame. Every year at the fair in August, butter artists create self-portraits for the winners of the Minnesota Dairy Princess Program, using 90-pound blocks of butter as their canvases. Joining us on the show today is the famed butter sculptor Linda Christensen. She's here to discuss her history with butter sculpting and its use as an art medium.   Creation Museum (0:25:22) For many people, the Bible can be confusing and hard to understand. For some, the accounts told in its ancient pages seem distant and removed from the world today. And for others, despite wanting to know more about the book, they don't know where to start or how to make sense of the writing. Well a museum out in Petersburg, Kentucky—called the Creation Museum—has set out to bring the Bible to life through its exhibitions in order to instruct and inspire its guests. Here to tell us all about it is Roger Patterson, from the museum.   Sleep Training Kids (0:39:14) The routine goes something like this: you coerce your child into their pajamas and into brushing their teeth, you've read their favorite book (twice), made up a new bedtime story for them, and then spent the next 20 minutes letting your arm fall asleep in the hopes that the child curled up on it will too. For some, working out is a chore that would rather be avoided, but for others it can be an addictive and healthy way to pass time. Dr. Lynelle Schneeberg has always had an interest in the area where psychology and medicine intersect, finding it fascinating how correcting a psychological issue can translate to the correction of a physical problem. She found sleep medicine at the center of this intersection and has devoted her life to helping people improve their lives by improving their sleep. She works as a sleep psychologist and assistant professor of clinical psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine and centers her focus on cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBTI). She discusses a common mistake people make once they realize they're not getting enough quality sleep, which is to start allotting more time to being in bed and opting out of activities they would otherwise be doing, such as going to the gym or engaging in social activities. Dr. Schneeberg explains, however, that by doing these things, they're actually just perpetuating the problem.   She joins the podcast to discuss a range of other topics, including the details of how and why CBTI works, and the “three Ps model” that underlies it--referring to precipitating factors, precipitating events, and perpetuating factors. She explains each one in detail, and how CBTI helps people identify and change the way they influence sleep. The two foundational techniques of CBTI are restriction and stimulus control; Dr. Schneeberg explains how she implements both in her work with patients and the kinds of results her and her patients are seeing.   Tune in for all the details and visit drschneeberg.com for more information.
