Welcome back to this week's episode of Trudge Report. Thank you for supporting the show.We kick things off going around the horn with some long-awaited sunshine for the Ohio boys. Danny celebrates his 42nd birthday, softball season, new jobs, grilling weather, and a few proud parenting moments as the guys share updates on family life. From there we take a detour into Dave Matthews Band weekend. Corey and Shawn recap the concert experience, rare songs, setlists, and the disappointment of missing a longtime favorite. This leads into a spirited discussion about the juncture where music and politics meet, and if this should even be the case. Do musicians have a right to use their platform on stage however they want for their political views or should they just play music and rock out? How much political rhetoric is too much or any at all? We then shift into the recovery segment and pick up where last week's conversation left off. The guys take a deep dive into Vivitrol, Suboxone, maintenance medications, and the difference between staying alive and finding lasting freedom through a spiritual experience. We discuss whether recovery tools can become crutches, the role of personal responsibility, and what it actually means to address the underlying problem rather than simply removing the substance. At the end of the day helping people stay alive long enough to find a better way remains something we can all stand behind.Without action, gratitude is just a pleasant emotion  - anonymousDon't forget to like, share, rate, and download the podcast on all of your listening platforms. In today's episode Simone reflects on the aftermath of the intersection of disability and race/racism at the BAFTA awards 2026. Specifically the institutional choice to air the involuntary words shouted by John Davidson, a white Tourette's syndrome campaigner, towards two Black actors, the lack of accommodations and planning around the event, the lack of accountability and adequate apology around the impact of racism from both BAFTA as an organisation and by the individual involved. Simone considers the intersection of these two systems of oppression from the point of view of a white disabled person who has been paying attention to the voices of Black disabled people, specifically referring to the work of Imani Barbarin, a Black American writer, public speaker, and disability rights activist who goes by the username Crutches and Spice: https://crutchesandspice.com/Subscribe, rate and review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music or wherever you get your podcasts.

Health Hats walks & floats through ancient Maya caves in Belize with forearm crutches, teamwork, trust, and shared decision-making every step of the way. Watch this episode on YouTube. Audio is published, but not the same Podcast episode on YouTube Summary What does it take to go cave tubing in Belize when you use forearm crutches and have no electric wheelchair? For Danny van Leeuwen, it takes the 3 T’s: Time (a half-mile walk), Trust (in guides and companions), and Talk (real-time decisions about stairs vs. river crossings). HHP245 is a first-person GoPro video of Danny floating through the sacred Caves Branch River — ancient Maya ceremonial grounds — with his wife and friend Linda. It’s part adventure, part health advocacy, and part proof that with the right team, you can push your capabilities further than you thought. Click here to view the printable newsletter with images. In Belize, floating in a tube through caves and snorkeling stretched me. How can tubing stretch anything? It's passive floating. The event included a mile-long walk to the cave entrance – relatively flat with some steps and wading across the river, a mere six-inches deep. No electric wheelchair, just my forearm crutches. Our guide and my compatriots shared in the decision-making and assisted me. This video episode was taken with a GoPro camera hanging around my neck. Watch the video. Reading will not give you the flavor. Narrative Let me tell you a little bit about where we are what you’ll see. Excuse me, as I will be certainly butchering some of the names of stuff. So where we are is Nohoch Che’en Caves, Branch Archeological Reserve, also called the Caves Branch River. It’s in the Cayo District, and districts are like provinces or states. It’s by far the most famous cave tubing destination in Belize and one of the most unique in the world. So this was sacred to the ancient Maya. They were considered portal to Xibalba, the Maya underworld. This wasn’t just mythology. The Maya actively used these caves for religious rituals and ceremonies, particularly during times of drought when they needed to communicate with the rain God, chaac. I don’t know. Archeologists have found ceramic offerings, jade artifacts and human remains inside; evidence of sacrificial rights dating back over 2000 years. The caves were largely forgotten after the Maya civilization declined and weren’t widely known to the outside world until the 1980s and nineties when the Belizean guides and explorers began documenting them and it became a active tourist destination in the early two thousands. So the Caves Branch River flows through a network of limestone caves carved out over millions of years. The system I floated on. Is part of a much larger Karst landscape riddled with interconnected caves. Some of them still unexplored. Pretty amazing, huh? Reflection That was it. Fifteen minutes of about an hour total time and 30 minutes of recording. I hope it gives you a flavor of what we did. It was awesome. I will be producing a couple more videos from Belize over the next few months. The next video will be of the Mayan ruins, then making tortillas and tamales, and then, we'll see. What is your podcast crutch? We all have them.So I was sitting at a  Detroit Tigers game with a friend the other day. Sadly, we were at a Detroit Tigers game. And we were talking about the WJPZ at 50 podcast that I had done. And he was teasing me that the "whispered wow" is what he called the hallmark of any JAG podcast. When somebody says something compelling or interesting, I tend to sit back and say, "Woooow."And I thought about it. He was probably right. And then he joked that other people have stolen it from me. I don't think it's original to me. That said, I was recording a podcast the very next day and I caught myself saying, "Wow," when somebody said something interesting. Now, there's nothing wrong with occasionally using a crutch or occasionally having a trademark of your podcast. And my friend wasn't criticizing me, but it got me thinking. We all have verbal crutches.I know one podcaster that as she gets ready for her next question, she says, "aaaaand," until she thinks of what she wants to look for. Some people say, um, uh, you know, like- those words that we all use in regular conversation. And this is not something that you are going to know off the top of your head what it is.My challenge to you, once you're 10, 15 episodes deep in your podcast, go back and listen to yourself. Now, I know this is something that's difficult for a lot of people because physiologically, your voice does not sound the same on a recording as it does inside the bones conducting inside your skull. Nobody likes how they sound recorded. But go back and listen to yourself and see if you can find certain crutch words you use and be aware of them. That way you can sort of...try to avoid using them, or at least overusing them in the future. It's okay to have crutch words, but as with everything in podcasting, all things in balance.Okay, one pet peeve for this week before we wrap up. The lavalier mic. These guys here. If you're a podcast or especially on YouTube, I see this all the time on YouTube.Do not use a clip on tiny lavalier mic as your interview mic. I can't tell you how many times he somebody on YouTube go back and forth, hey, quick, quick, let's do this. These mics are designed to clip on to a lapel and be "this far" from somebody's mouth, not right up here. It's going to sound distorted. It's not going to sound good. Then that goes for these old school lapel mics, lav mics and these new school mics that clip on.And Rode makes these, this is a knockoff version of a those. They're designed to clip on and be a certain distance from your mouth. You risk having the audio distort and clip and be too loud if you don't use mics as they're designed. If you're going to interview somebody, have a handheld mic and do it the old school way. Use mics the way in which they're designed. If you need me, I'll be telling the neighborhood kids to get off my lawn and their music is too loud. Lata! Today on part two the Rarified Heir Podcast, we continue our conversation with Sharyn Felder, daughter of the late, great songwriter Doc Pomus and trust us, this episode is as jam packed and fun-filled as part one from last week. Last week we spoke to Sharyn on the release day of a new box set of her father's music, You Can't Hip a Square: The Doc Pomus Songwriting Demos on Omnivore Recordings, a six-CD set of lost, archival tracks. We continue that conversation today and learn that there just may be more tracks in her father's archive that have never been released co-written by a very famous musician from New Orleans. We also hear more about her father's second career as a card player when the royalty money dried up in the 1970s and the characters who inhabited that word – the mobsters, the octogenarians, the hypochondriacs, the gun-toting security and more. We also learned why the games stopped (take a guess) and how Doc began the second phase of his songwriting career, years after his career started. Sharyn's colorful stories on this episode include two very popular music business folks who absolutely hated each other, Doc Pomus' connection to a massive film in the 1970s that launched a comedy duo and became part of pop culture icons, how a bathhouse singer gained massive fame via Doc's help but never acknowledged it publicly and much more. Part two is every bit as good as part one as you will hear right now on this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.

In this week's episode, we talk about some more adventures that we went on. We were lucky enough to have some pretty good once in a lifetime seats at a New York Mets game. We also mention a pretty cool time we had at the American Dream Mall and being in a room filled with giant balloons. We also talk a bit about the UFC and what could quite possibly be our favorite food stand ever made at this year's Halloween Horror Nights. Did Greg and his softball team win their Championship series on Sunday and how did Greg end up needing to use crutches? Give this one a listen to find out!

Crutches of Self-Worth

The endless pursuit of achievement, validation, and perfection has become the silent struggle of many Muslim women today. We dive deep into a profound dilemma: the confusion between self-worth and value that keeps high-achieving women trapped in cycles of burnout and spiritual disconnection.Your worth was never meant to be earned. Before your name, before your body, even before your first breath, your soul stood before Allah SWT and acknowledged Him as your Lord. That moment, not your accomplishments, sealed your worth forever. Yet many of us use "crutches" to hold up our self-worth: career success, perfect motherhood, flawless homemaking, or even our spiritual practices. These virtuous pursuits become burdens when our identities depend on them. What crutches are you using to hold up your self-worth? What would change if you believed you were already worthy? Free yourself from the need to prove, perform, or please. Your worship, your work, your relationships can all flow from a place of inherent worthiness rather than desperate striving. This isn't just easier—it's sacred.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------If this podcast has benefited you, imagine the value of a one-on-one meeting with me! Female friendships provide irreplaceable support as our cheerleaders, therapists, and comedy specials rolled into one, but they can subtly transform from empowering sisterhoods into dependency cycles that erode self-trust. The danger lies in constantly seeking validation from others instead of trusting our own judgment, slowly outsourcing our decision-making and disconnecting from our inner guidance.• The difference between seeking advice versus seeking permission• How dependency on external validation chips away at self-respect• Why constantly polling friends for decisions teaches us our judgment isn't enough• Common subconscious lies we tell ourselves about friendship and decision-making• Reframing discomfort as an invitation to reconnect with yourself• The paradox that less approval-seeking creates deeper connections• Practical steps to rebuild self-trust while maintaining meaningful friendships• Why true friendships reflect your power back to you instead of replacing itMay our relationships be sources of love, growth, and peace, with our confidence always rooted in Allah alone.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------If this podcast has benefited you, imagine the value of a one-on-one meeting with me!
