Mad About You. For most of us, our tendency is to feel others deserve judgment while we deserve grace, mercy and comfort. In the end, what's most concerning to God gets overshadowed by what's more concerning to me.
On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with Emmy award-winning and Golden Globe-winning comedy writer, actor, and comedian Monica Piper. After a smash-hit run off-Broadway, her one-woman show, “Not That Jewish,” returned to The Braid in Santa Monica for the show's 10 year anniversary; it runs through the end of May. Piper was a high school English teacher, before she left to try comedy and eventually create this show. She has been a standup comic, a writer for “Roseanne” and “Mad About You,” and head writer on “Rugrats.” “Not That Jewish” is a love letter to being Jewish, as Piper tells stories of her family - particularly her funny father and passing on the humor gene to her son - and her foray into comedy. “Someone asked me what's my favorite thing about being Jewish … there's so many things, but right up there was food,” Piper shares. “They said, ‘Even gefilte fish?' Yes, even gefilte fish.” In fact, a chopped liver sandwich, one of Piper's go-to comfort foods, is something she strongly associates with her Jewish identity. “Food is so much a part of life and Jewish life, but it's the comradery,” Piper says. “As a child, my memories [of Shabbat at my aunt's home with] people talking and arguing and laughing is so much a part of me, so I associate that with food.” Monica Piper shares food memories, the importance of laughter, and her “Not That Jewish'” origin story, which came with encouragement and assistance from The Braid founder and artistic director Ronda Spinak. There are also tangents on the Instant Pot, goals, and a shared fandom of The Braid. Taste Buds host Debra Eckerling recently did a Sunday at the Braid event for her new book, “52 Secrets for Goal-Setting and Goal-Getting,” via Zoom, hosted by David Chiu and along with Katie Chin and Elaine Hall, who are in the book. The Braid's newest salon show, “For the Love of Animals,” opens next week. Learn more about “Not That Jewish” at The-Braid.org/Monica and the new show at The-Braid.org. Watch Debra Eckerling's Sundays at The Braid conversation at @TheBraidStories on YouTube. For more from Taste Buds, subscribe on iTunes and YouTube, and follow @TheDEBMethod on social media.

Hank Azaria is used to putting on other personalities. You probably know him best from his work as a voice actor on “The Simpsons,” where he plays Moe the bartender, Professor Frink, Chief Wiggum and Snake Jailbird, among many others. His list of credits in stage plays, movies and TV shows is prolific, including roles like his Tony-nominated performance in “Spamalot,” Phoebe's boyfriend on “Friends” and the dog walker on “Mad About You.” But at a certain point in his life, Azaria realized that he was using humor and acting to be anyone but himself, and that it was affecting his real-life relationships. After five devastating heartbreaks, he resolved to look inward, address his codependency issues and become his most authentic self.In this episode, Azaria tells us how he found authenticity and reads the Modern Love essay “In Defense of My Emu Tattoo,” about an author who masks his true self by using humor but eventually finds love by learning to be himself. How to submit a Modern Love Essay to The New York TimesHow to submit a Tiny Love Story Unlock full access to New York Times podcasts and explore everything from politics to pop culture. Hey, Behind the Velvet Rope listeners! I'm dropping in with something I know you're going to love. You know Jesse Tyler Ferguson, right? Modern Family's Mitch, Broadway star, and all-around delightful human? Well, Jesse's got an amazing podcast called Dinner's On Me where he takes celebrity guests out for dinner at some of the best restaurants in Los Angeles and New York City. It's like being a fly on the wall for the most fun and fascinating conversations. The conversations? Juicy. Fun. And always filled with surprises. And let's be honest, who wouldn't want to listen in on dinner with Lisa Kudrow? That's right, —Jesse recently sat down with none other than Friends legend Lisa Kudrow and they got into something fascinating: how Lisa played Ursula, the quirky waitress from Mad About You, even before she landed the role of Phoebe on Friends. When Friends came along, NBC didn't want to lose Lisa's magic on Mad About You, so they made Phoebe and Ursula twin sisters to connect the two shows. It's such an amazing bit of TV history, and of course, only someone like Lisa could pull it off. To hear more about Lisa's time on Friends and Mad About You, plus the fascinating career moments that only Lisa could have, head over to Dinner's On Me with Jesse Tyler Ferguson. In April 1997, Ellen was on the cover of Time magazine declaring, “Yep, I'm Gay.” Then a few weeks later, her sitcom alter ego came out on TV. It was watched by 42 million people. The next year, in 1998, Will & Grace premiered on NBC. This was a watershed moment for gay representation. Then came: The Pursuit of Happiness, Mad About You, Spin City, Chicago Hope, Melrose Place, NYPD Blue, My So-Called Life, Fired Up, The Crew, Profiler, and High Society—which all started to include gay characters. The whole decade consisted of landmark moments for gay rights. In May 1996, the Supreme Court decided in Romer v. Evans that Colorado's 2nd Amendment, which denied gays and lesbians protections against discrimination, was actually unconstitutional, and in May 1998, Bill Clinton signed an executive order that made it illegal to discriminate based on sexual orientation in federal workplaces. The gay-rights movement in America was making real progress. Then, something horrific happened. On a late October night in 1998, in a little town called Laramie, Wyoming, a 21-year-old college student named Matthew Shepard was killed. The details of the murder were brutal. He was pistol-whipped 18 times, beaten, tied to the bottom of a split-rail wooden fence in a remote part of town, and left there unconscious to die. When he was found, it was said that he looked like a scarecrow. One of the first responders said Matthew's face had so much blood that the only place you could see his skin was where the path of his tears had fallen and washed away the blood. He died a few days later in a nearby hospital. In the weeks and months that followed, a narrative took shape. Matthew Shepard was killed by two men who he did not know—Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson—because he was gay. It was a hate crime, and it was deplorable. As the news spread, celebrities and politicians around the country spoke out. President Clinton told journalists at the White House, “In our shock and grief one thing must remain clear: hate and prejudice are not American values.” The story of this anti-gay hate crime came to represent the very thing that many gay Americans feared America was at its worst: a place of deep bigotry, where violence against gay people is rampant, where a young man could be targeted and killed simply for being gay, and a country where there are whole cities and towns, maybe even whole regions, where gay people aren't safe. The death of Matthew Shepard became the most notorious anti-gay hate crime in American history. “Shepard is to gay rights what Emmett Till was to the civil rights movement,” as New York congressman Sean Patrick Maloney said. But what if the story wasn't true? What if Matthew Shepard wasn't murdered for being gay, but rather for something more common—though equally tragic? And why did so many people refuse to believe it when investigative journalists discovered the truth? Those were the questions on reporter Ben Kawaller's mind when he went to Laramie earlier this month, where he interviewed residents, journalists, and former detectives who have a lot to say about the Matthew Shepard case and what really happened. Today, the real Matthew Shepard story and why the full truth is still important. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
For most of the past 40 years, NBC has absolutely owned Thursday nights. The network was never more successful in that endeavor than during the heyday of its "Must-See TV" programming block in the 1990s and early 2000s. Legendary comedies provided the anchors for smaller, but still great, sitcoms to find their footing, and tentpole dramas closed out the night. While the best days of "Must-See TV" are likely behind us, the Great Pop Culture Debate podcast wants to look back and determine the best NBC "Must-See TV" Show of all time. Join host Eric Rezsnyak and GPCD panelists Amy Pilott, Jim Czadzeck, and Kevin Dillon as they discuss and debate 16 series that aired as part of NBC's legendary Thursday-night programming block. Red Bull's Playbook for Creating Engaging Content Geoffrey left the ad business to work as a studio executive on shows like Mad About You and Dawson's Creek when an old friend contacted him about an ailing agency that needed his expert advice. At that agency, he helped turn things around and became part of the team that made Red Bull a brand that pushed the limits by doing things differently. One of the things they discussed when trying to establish Red Bull as a rebel and unique brand was leveraging entertainment content. They truly excelled at content creation, with a strong focus on pushing the limits and doing things differently. Years later, Red Bull has become a leader in the marketing space creating engaging and unique events that serve as content generators. Red Bull's approach to content creation has set a strong playbook for other brands to follow. With Red Bull Media House, a separate entity focused on producing and distributing content, they've been able to monetize its marketing content, a strategy that has proven to be successful for the brand. By leveraging entertainment content for the brand, Red Bull has engaged with consumers in a meaningful way and created a strong connection with its audience. With this, they've been able to build a loyal fan base and establish itself as a leader in the industry by thinking outside the box and taking risks. 3 Keys to Crafting Compelling Brand Stories Brands can tell wonderful stories that resonate with their audience and create a lasting impact. How can you guide them to discovering these stories? For Geoffrey, there are three very important aspects: Talk to clients about giving their marketing a sense of purpose. It has to be informative, engaging, or entertaining or no one will pay attention to it. Influencer marketing is like word of mouth on steroids. It may not be seen as authentic as when it first exploded but it's very effective and there's a way to do it right. As a brand, don't give up control of how your product will be presented, and make sure to search for influencers who line up with your brand. Driving fandom. Fandom goes way beyond just liking a brand. It has to do with creating passion and loyalty for that brand. Building fandom through brand passion involves creating a strong emotional connection with consumers. If you can find a way to create the level of fandom that saved brands like Apple and Jeep, you'll have an audience that can get you through hard times. Personal Interaction as a Powerful Tool to Create Connection Personal interaction is a key component in building relationships and fostering loyalty in business. It is particularly relevant in the agency world, especially in the context of building and maintaining client relationships. This is where a podcast becomes a powerful tool agency owners can use to create a personal connection with clients and prospects. By sharing insights, thoughts, and expertise through a podcast, they can showcase their personality and expertise, allowing clients to get to know them on a deeper level. This personal connection can lead to stronger relationships and increased loyalty from clients. Once you've established yourself as an expert, you won't need to pitch. You'll be invited to projects and assess whether or not your agency would be a good fit with the brand but you won't be asked to compete for the company's attention. Boosting Agency Performance Through Amazing Leadership and Trust Agencies go through several inflection points while growing their teams and clientele. At some point what worked before won't be as effective and you have to adapt. When he came in as an expert consultant to help Red Bull grow as a brand, Geoffrey noticed a need to improve communications and how the team was staffed. If you're having similar problems at your agency, look at your leadership team and see what you need to fix to ensure strong leadership at the top and set the tone for the entire organization. By ensuring that the leadership team consists of top performers, the rest of the team is more likely to follow suit and excel in their roles. Geoffrey focuses on two main issues: Effective communication. As he spent some time at the Red Bull offices, he noticed everyone spent their day emailing each other. This is a creative business and interaction is a very important part of sparking that creativity. So he shut off the email services for 48 hours to incentivize communication in their open-space office. Trust as a form of empowerment. Geoffrey believes in giving people reign to innovate. This motivates people once they feel free to create and grow beyond their skill set. It's not about giving up control but rather giving people the space to develop and grow. Trusting Your Gut to Weed Out Toxic Team Members and Preserve Morale As human beings, we have innate instincts that can guide us in making decisions in difficult situations, which can apply when it comes to hiring and managing employees. Trusting your instincts and being able to act on them can prevent toxic individuals from negatively impacting the team and the organization as a whole. Geoffrey encourages agency owners to use their instincts to stay vigilant and proactive in addressing issues within a team. One or two individuals with negative attitudes can bring down the morale of the entire team. As a manager or leader, it is crucial to recognize when someone is not the right fit for the team and take swift action. Delaying the decision to remove a toxic team member can lead to bigger problems down the line. Do You Want to Transform Your Agency from a Liability to an Asset?
