Hello Hustlers!!! Welcome back to another Friday of inspiration and determination. This week, we have esteemed guest host Anne- Laure Orosco. We are rising bright and early today alongside a true Hustler Lynn Yap. It may be shorter to list what Lynn hasn't done, but we love to brag about our Hustlers. From taking companies public on Wall Street, writing and publishing a book, learning 8 languages, mentoring young women and running a consulting business full time, Lynn has things on lock. Finding meaning in a multidimensional world is one thing, creating meaning on multiple levels is an accomplishment we all hope to achieve. Lynn has blazed many trails in her lifetime, one of these plays with the question of “what if young women have role models in business and leadership?” Starting at age 13, Lynn's program opens up worlds to young women that could be totally foreign to them and helps develop leadership skills, familiarity, and enables them to explore in a positive environment. In these three months the work these women do, will help accelerate them in their careers and push them to living authentic lives. Another incredible achievement is “The Altruistic Capitalist”, a fantastic book written about how we as individuals can change the outcome of the world through how we have conversations. Conversations about business, ethics, and how our choices and actions in business will be the tone set for the future of humanity. I talk with the author of “the altruistic capitalist” Lynn Yap. She shares stories of how business can be used as a force for good, with examples like the sneaker with the lowest carbon emissions, to empowering elderly folks with electronics. In the research she conducted for her book, she pulled out three key mindsets of the altruistic capitalist. Here she tells us what they are and shows different ways they can show up at work (some of these things can be implemented almost immediately). She talks about why the dog-eat-dog mindset no longer works and the shift which is now coming through where care for employees, distributors, customers etc is becoming more and more important (rather than only pleasing shareholders). And if all this change seems too big, she talks about why we shouldn't be afraid in the face of its magnitude. All net proceeds of Lynn's book "the altruistic capitalist" go towards girls education. And anyone who purchases a copy in December will see the proceeds donated towards Action Aid (https://actionaid.org.au/) Find out more about Lynn Yap here: Lynn@AltruisticCapitalist.com https://www.altruisticcapitalist.com/ https://www.instagram.com/altruisticcapitalist/

Our guest on the podcast this week is Linn Yap, the founder of the Activ8 network, whose mission is to increase the participation of women in technology and entrepreneurship. She started her career as a corporate attorney, graduated from the Wharton School with an MBA, and worked in investment banking. Her curiosity led her to write about business as a force for good. Her book the Altruistic Capitalist brings together conversations with leaders at for-profit corporations, entrepreneurs, and investors, and her personal experience, all in service of the changes the world needs. As Lynn says we can no longer rely on governments and non-profit organizations alone to solve our social and environmental problems. Today Lynn shares her experiences of becoming a corporate attorney in investment banking and how a personal request that was declined during the Facebook IPO changed everything for her and catalyzes her passion for working with organizations that embrace all stakeholders within the business. Listen in as we talk through what it means to be an “altruistic capitalist”, and we begin to unpack the challenges facing leaders and the unique opportunities that exist today. Lynn speaks with a deep passion about having an open mindset, about curiosity and its role in social impact, and about the value of collaboration and partnerships. As she says “It's not about profit only, it's about growing the pie”. She shares some exciting data from the World Economic Forum that shows that business is already heading in this direction, and it's no longer a choice we have whether to embrace this perspective or not, it's something we need to do if we want our business to survive in the longer term. If you work with leaders or you want to step into your leadership in a better way, this is a conversation you don't want to miss. I suspect you'll enjoy this lively discourse as much as I did. Key Takeaways Lynn's dynamic perspective on how to lead in a capitalist economy The difference between focusing solely on profit and focusing on all stakeholders and its impact on the bottom line. How can we turn a profit while also creating a sustainable business with positive impacts? How can companies scale impact to provide benefits to the environment and community? Her book speaks to leaders, social entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs, and innovators who want to change the relationship between business, our people, and the planet. We can no longer rely on governments and non-profit organizations alone to solve our social and environmental problems. As we look urgently to the business world for solutions, this kinder, more mindful brand of capitalism just may provide a pathway out. In this interview, Lynn chats with us about the path that led her to start her journey focusing on businesses that can be a force of good. While working at Adidas, she saw how various collaborations and partnerships with different startups enabled Adidas to maximize value and develop new innovations. This and other such experiences led her to write the book. As a business owner, Lynn tells you you need to understand what, your purpose is, what drives you and your organization, what are the values that motivate your organization, and, follow those, your profit comes after that. She stresses the point that in today's world, there is no trade-off between a company that focuses on environmental or people goals and a company that focuses on profits. Both these scenarios have to go hand in hand, it's a win-win situation so as to maximize value for everyone. In her book, The Altruistic Capitalist leader has three mindsets: Mindfulness, curiosity, and Grit. Lynn focuses on the goals are around collaboration, candidness, and transparency really make for a much greater outcome in your company such as Creating win-win partnerships. Focusing on partnerships that end in innovations that solve social problems together.
