On November 8th, the Anchorage School District Superintendent announced that they would not be following through with a plan to bring pre-school through second grade and some special education programs back to in-person learning. This was at least the third time this year that ASD has had to reverse course in reopening schools, due to the coronavirus pandemic. In order to better understand this saga, in this episode we’re talking with Marty Lang, a director of secondary education for ASD, who supervises the high schools. ATMI senior producer Quinn White spoke with him about the ever-changing plans to bring kids back into schools, balancing different risk factors, precautions they’re taking to ensure safety, and much more. They spoke on October 21st, 2020, when ASD was still planning on bringing younger students back. Hosted by Sam Bernitz. Music by Devin Shreckengost. This week we got to talk with filmmaker and educator Marty Lang (for the third time). He is teaching the first college level class in the world, on crowdfunding and he's using his own film as a case study on the process. He's got a lot of information to share and this episode is chock full of great information and advice because of it!
I used to be a filmmaker and a crowdfunding consultant and then life happened. When the COVID-19 Pandemic hit, my wife wondered if maybe I should get back into it. But, I've been out of the loop for so long, I need to get up to speed. I thought an interesting way to do that would be a podcast where I both get up to speed and interview people with ideas on where creatives go from here. What happens when society shuts down? How do you move forward? How do you get your work out there? In the first episode, I talk to filmmaker and film professor Marty Lang about his campaign for STAY WITH ME, the difference between crowdfunding 10 years ago and now, and what a filmmaker might do in a pandemic. At least, when my toddler isn't interrupting. This is very much a work-in-progress. Normally, I'd plan more and add a lot more polish, but things are moving quickly as the world falls apart. In July of 2017, 50-year-old Marty Lang seemingly vanished into thin air. He made it to his rural property outside of Newport after work and set down his lunchbox. It was found about a foot or two from the driver’s side door. Those who knew him best believe there was a deadly encounter in his driveway. The sheriff isn’t so sure.
