As a young girl growing up in Atlanta, chemistry and math were a passion for Stephanie Espy, our podcast guest, this week. This passion followed Stephanie to college, where she earned her bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from MIT. Upon earning her degree, Stephanie became one of the women who earned 19 percent of bachelor's degrees in engineering, as well as one of the minority women awarded 3 percent of bachelor's degrees in engineering.  Stephanie went on to further her education by graduating from UC Berkeley with a master's in chemical engineering and obtaining an MBA from Emory University.With a strong career path projected before her, Stephanie felt compelled to set her own course, focusing her work on making STEM subjects more relatable and engaging for kids and highlighting women role models in STEM. Stephanie started her own business in 2008 and is the Founder and CEO of MathSP. Additionally, she authored the book STEM Gems, a book for girls and young women to explore STEM careers through the stories of 44 inspiring women STEM leaders.  In my conversation with Stephanie, who is recognized as the #1 LinkedIn Top Voice in Education, I asked her who were her role models growing up, how she had the courage to leave a stable industry job and start her own business, and she shares the entrepreneurship lessons she learned along the way.

Stephanie Espy is one of the 19% of women (and 3% of women of color) who earn an engineering degree in America. Growing up in a family surrounded by scientists, engineers, and mathematicians, she considers herself “lucky” considering such grim stats. Lucky because she had a type of exposure growing up that many girls and young women don't.  * After working as a chemical engineer and eventually pursuing an MBA, she decided to start a business, MathSP, a premier STEM-focused academic and test prep coaching company. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Through MathSP, Stephanie blends the skills she learned working in industry with her mission to reach the historically disadvantaged and underrepresented in the educational system. * Her outreach efforts became front and center stage with the premiere of her acclaimed book, STEM Gems. That book soon became a national movement and found Stephanie on stages, in classrooms, and facilitating events. * And then the pandemic happened. Just when it seemed the momentum she gained was in jeopardy, Stephanie and her team quickly sprang into action. Today on the show, I am chatting with Stephanie Espy. With chemical engineering degrees from both MIT and UC Berkeley and an MBA from Emory, Stephanie's background is indeed impressive, but not nearly has impressive as her current mission to inspire and educate the next wave of female STEM leaders as the founder of MathSP based in Atlanta Georgia. Stephanie and I chat about growing up in a family of engineers, the scarcity of girls, especially minorities in STEM, and how she juggles being a mom and a business owner.  We discuss her mom and grandmother's influence, as well as, the 44 incredible STEM women she has interviewed in her book STEM Gems.  All of this and so much more. Girls are underrepresented in STEM. Chemical Engineer Stephanie Espy is trying to change that. Her book, STEM Gems, exposes girls to 44 different STEM professionals. Stephanie Espy earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Masters degree in Chemical Engineering from Berkley in California as well as a Masters Degree in Entrepreneurship and Marketing from Emory University. Stephanie worked at Merck for a couple of years but went on to pursue her own company MathSP. MathSP is an academic and test prep coaching company that has mastered the art of equipping students with a “math state of mind” while arming them with the strategies and insider “tricks” they need to ace standardized tests and attend the schools of their dreams. Stephanie is also the author of the book STEM Gems targeted at high school girls looking at STEM and shares 44 stories from women in STEM all in different STEM fields. [0:50] Stephanie started working at Amoco (now BP) and also did research at UC Berkley and was involved in Natural Rubber manufacturing. [2:07] Describes what a Chemical Engineering Process Engineer would do. [3:41] Why she chose Chemical Engineering over the other STEM/Engineering fields. She was a fan of Math and Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is a combination of both. [5:51] Stephanie’s area of expertise: Plastics and Polymers along with Oil and Gas. [6:45] What has her really fired up today – what can she do as a woman to help expose females to engineering careers. Which is why she wrote STEM Gems. Put in link….. [9:04] You get your best products when you have diversity in the workplace. You may go to college and major in a STEM degree and there may only be a couple of women in the classes, and people may actually tell you, this is not the right career for you. Don’t listen to them! Find and organization that will support you, like SWE – Society of Women Engineers. [12:08] An ah-ha Stephanie turned into success; being the only women at her workplace inspired her to write the STEM Gems book. Also, in graduate school she was tasked with how to get a natural rubber plant to produce higher quality rubber and better yield – this had never been done before. She spent 3-4 months tweaking an experiment to figure out the problem – she finally got it to work and was able to publish 2 papers on her results and was very rewarding. You have to persevere and just stick with it and don’t give up on yourself. [16:20] Getting through college – Stephanie says here number one thing was how important it is to ask for help and not work alone. In high school she could read the book do the work and do just fine, that was not the case her freshman year in college. She did not even know that it was OK to ask for help in college. [19:17] Best advice ever received is to “give yourself permission” and a personal habit for her success is to have a to-do list and write things down, use a planner and also live in the moment but also plan for the future. Diva Tech Talk interviewed Stephanie Espy, Founder and CEO of MathSP (https://mathsp.com/) and STEM Gems (http://stemgemsbook.com/).  Stephanie shares a common goal with Diva Tech Talk (www.divatechtalk.com) to support the next generation of female STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) practitioners. Both of Stephanie’s parents are engineers and three of her siblings are connected to STEM. “Engineering and science are two main career paths my family has taken.” Stephanie was also influenced by “really fabulous teachers”as early as elementary school, extending through secondary education and college. After high school, Stephanie moved from Georgia to Massachusetts to attend MIT (www.mit.edu ). There she “thrived because of the community” and obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering.  Her penchant for bonding with others in her dorm, in her major and “with other women of color on campus” got her through the “difficult moments.” Stephanie successfully completed research projects and worked at many internships which “helped solidify my understanding of how engineers make a difference in the world.”  She matriculated to the University of California, Berkeley (https://www.berkeley.edu/) for her graduate degree in chemical engineering.  She also accrued corporate experience, working with polymers in a manufacturing plant; using various rubber-producing plants at the U.S. Department of Agriculture to improve quality and yield of U.S.-grown natural rubber; and as a chemical engineer in the oil and gas industry at BP (www.bp.com).  She also decided to get a business degree to complement her graduate degree in chemical engineering.  “I landed at Emory University’s Goizueta Business School” (http://www.goizueta.emory.edu/) where Stephanie earned her MBA.  At Goizueta, she “shifted gears; I got this entrepreneurial ‘bug’ and that drove me to want to create something, my own way of helping to close the gender gap in STEM.” Stephanie said “most of my experiences had been in male-dominated environments. I yearned for more representation” by women and people of color.  She founded MathSP a decade ago. “S stands for strategies; and P stands for problem-solving.” The company’s premise is “in order to enter a STEM career, you must have a solid foundation in math and science.” Her venture helps male and female students at all levels “uncover gaps in their foundation and close them, helping them become more ‘STEM-fluent:’ better problem-solvers, independent thinkers and life-long learners.”   She also saw a need to serve girls “in their own special way.”  In 2014, Stephanie founded STEM Gems (http://stemgemsbook.com/), which began as a book but has morphed into “a movement.”  Its aim is “to expose girls and young women to careers and role models in STEM.”  It offers its audience exposure to career opportunities that “they did not even know existed.”  In addition to the variety of career choices, STEM Gems also give girls exposure to role models working in science, technology and math.  “These are things you, as a girl, can do!” The STEM Gems book features 44 different women and their diverse careers, like data science, global health science, environmental engineering, archaeology, entomology, biotechnology, animation and a plethora of others.   “There are so many careers out there that people don’t really think about,” Stephanie exclaimed.  STEM Gems is shining a light on many of them. “A lot of research went into finding STEM women leaders, highlighting their accomplishments and advice, interviewing all of them,” and spotlighting the biggest thing: “how they make a difference in the world and help people.”  A challenge was also to put those stories into the language of children “so a 10-year old girl could pick up the book, read it, and understand. It has touched so many lives, both through the book and the STEM Gems Clubs!” The clubs focus on groups reading the book and following a curriculum (with adult community members leading). They began in the last 12 months, and have spread through the United States.  “It is a ‘tribe setting,’ and shows you that you are never alone in your pursuit of greatness,” Stephanie said. Stephanie has learned many leadership lessons throughout her career: “Never, ever, give up, despite the odds.”  Do not be intimidated. “Walk into a room and sit at the table…” invariably letting your voice be heard. Speak up and speak out. And “you cannot shy away from a challenge.” Get comfortable “being a trailblazer.” Stephanie’s parting tips for women and girls to succeed include: “Be a part of the community. You can’t do much alone.”   To that end, she recommends membership in many of the national and regional professional associations that offer resources, support and fellowship. “Be a mentor to the next generation.
