Matt Pond PA - "Imagining Everything" from the 2024 album Call and Response on 131 Records Today's Song of the Day marks a homecoming for singer/songwriter Matt Pond who launched his career in 1998 as matt pond PA, but tried to ditch the name the past few years, releasing an album under the moniker The Natural Lines in 2022. But now, he's re-embraced his original band name with the release of this new single. "Our album as The Natural Lines was one of my favorite experiences in making music,” Matt told Brooklyn Vegan last year. “We thoughtfully built songs and a band that represented the inner world of the post-pandemic return to reality. But as it stands now, I've said everything I can in that incarnation. I gave myself a strange band name back in Philly and it's been impossible to shake. As much as I love to run, there's no running from who I am.” “In the song and video for ‘Imagining Everything,'” he adds, “I can hear the worst thoughts about myself — about all of us. Nevertheless, I want to find a way back to loving this world.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Avenue Red welcomes the second coming of the exquisitely tasteful, refined deep house and techno selector from Paris known as Caillou. Here he has delivered a mix not too dissimilar to his first, but has pushed a little deeper into the dreamier, sleepier territories of his unique record collection. "I'd like to thank Alec for the opportunity to contribute again to Avenue Red. I wanted to do something deep and mellow but with tracks that I actually play at parties when I get early morning slots, just pitched down a bit to have a more home listening feel. So all the tracks in there have been tested on dancefloors, but hopefully this is a mix you can listen to at home if you're stuck inside. Shout out to the bosses Matt Pond (https://soundcloud.com/deepsystems) and Cosmicsou (https://soundcloud.com/souhail88) for coining the term Sleephouse, which I think suits this style of house music, and to all the artists featured in here for their amazing and inspiring work. Retirement was short-lived for Matt Pond PA. The eponymous front man very publicly toyed with the moniker that’s continued to tie him to his home state, but a 20 year run like that isn’t something one walks away from so easy. Pond continues a prolific career, often teaming with producer and guitarist Chris Hansen, a core collaborator and creative life mate. This month, the duo released Songs of Disquiet, a seven-song EP written and produced amid the current pandemic. It’s an album that, among other things, maintains his long standing passion for juxtaposition loving cover songs with originals. Ahead of the pandemic clamping down on travel, Pond came down from his nearby Hudson Valley, NY home to discuss the ups and downs of a life in indie rock.
The Luminous Mind Podcast | A show about you becoming your best self through unconventional thinking
This podcast is with motivational speaker, Matt Pond. Matt was diagnosed with brain cancer at age 35. He had less than a 1% chance of survival. In the next four years, he went through radiation and 8 types of chemotherapy and three surguries. He lost his ability to read and write, and the surgery that saved his life, left him with paralysis of his entire right side. Matt is moving forward with great optimism, as he has conquered challenges as well as becoming creative in relearning skills and joys. Matt's motto is, "I don't have a bad day anymore. I have good days and I have better days”! Check out the show notes page
Racking up an astonishing 13 proper albums within the last two decades -- not including singles or EP releases -- Matt Pond has solidified himself as one of the most prolific singer-songwriters working today. Though the name Matt Pond PA was retired in 2017 (a moniker for his recording and touring band of which he was the sole consistent member), his work over the last 12 years with musician and engineer Chris Hansen has led to film and commercial scoring, as well as An Orchestrated Impulse, a new multi-sensory collaboration with visual artist Eva Magill-Oliver, comprised of twelve paintings each paired with an instrumental composition in a different key. On today's show, Matt muses about The Minutemen's "Double Nickels on the Dime," why he's had to abandon three completely separate record collections over the years, the Beatles-influenced stage name he almost went by when he moved to Brooklyn and how his mom's confusion between John Waite and Tom Waits paved Matt's musical journey. The installation of An Orchestrated Impulse debuts October 11th at the O+ Festival in Kingston, NY with full performance details at orchestratedimpulse.com, and accompanying music available for digital download at anorchestratedimpulse.bandcamp.com. Chubby! on Facebook: www.facebook.com/chubbyrecords Matt Pond on Facebook: www.facebook.com/matt.pond.5 @deepsystems Matt Pond is a man who understands that the gulf in hierarchy between DJs at the top and bottom of the food chain is as vast as it’s ever been. Despite or maybe because of this, he is one of those guys who has picked substance over style: modest and demure in his demeanour, you only have to scratch the surface to realise he’s a seasoned professional who’s been in the business for decades. He’s a humble individual who sees past the glittery awards and their accompanying hubris and has stayed loyal to his loyal stalwarts of underground culture.
On today's episode I talk to musician Matt Pond. Originally from New Hampshire, Matt began writing and releasing music in 1998 as Matt Pond PA. Debuting with the album Deer Apartments, the band quickly gained momentum after claiming top honors in an unsigned bands competition sponsored by CDNOW. Since then, Matt - along with a rotating cast of musical collaborators - has released almost two dozen albums and EPs on labels like Polyvinyl and BMG. His latest, Winter Lives, was just released late last year on Matt's new indie label 131 Records. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.
