The show is a production of WNYC, New York Public Radio. Vocalist and anthropologist Galeet Dardashti is an advocate of Middle Eastern and North African Jewish culture. She founded the all-woman Middle Eastern Jewish ensemble, Divahn, specializes in Mizrahi cultural politics, music and media in Israel, and is a visiting professor at NYU who has begun research on progressive, millennial Sephardi/Mizrahi North American Jews. Her latest recording is Monajat, a Persian word meaning an intimate dialogue with the Divine. The record is also a digital collaboration with the recorded voice of her grandfather Younes Dardashti, a master singer of Persian classical music in 1950s/60s Iran, backed by an all-star ensemble that includes Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz on oud and bass; Max ZT on hammered dulcimer; Zafer Tawi on violin, ney, vocals, percussion; Philip Mayer on drums; and John Stanesco contributing electronics. On Monajat, Galeet Dardashti takes as her inspiration the Hebrew sacred music of the Selihot ritual (or penitential prayers) and merges Persian piyutim (liturgical songs) traditionally chanted as part of the Selihot service, as well as other liturgical and non-liturgical Hebrew and Persian poetry set to new music. “Monajat”, a song likely written by Younes Dardashti, in the style of the 13th century Sufi poet Rumi, is how her grandfather's original recording of Selihot ends. Galeet Dardashti presents selections from Monajat, and talks about "bridging generations and geography" (John Schaefer) for this New Sounds. - Caryn HavlikProgram #4788, With Galeet DardashtiARTIST: Galeet Dardashti WORK: Aneinu [1:32] RECORDING: Monajat SOURCE/INFO: galeetdardashti.bandcamp.com/album/monajatARTIST: Galeet Dardashti WORK: Adon Haselichot [4:54] RECORDING: Monajat SOURCE/INFO: galeetdardashti.bandcamp.com/album/monajatARTIST: Galeet Dardashti WORK: Adonai Hu Ha'elohim [5:13] RECORDING: Monajat SOURCE/INFO: galeetdardashti.bandcamp.com/album/monajatARTIST: Galeet Dardashti WORK: Melekh [5:06] RECORDING: Monajat SOURCE/INFO: galeetdardashti.bandcamp.com/album/monajatARTIST: Galeet Dardashti WORK: Monajat [4:10] RECORDING: Monajat SOURCE/INFO: galeetdardashti.bandcamp.com/album/ARTIST: Galeet Dardashti WORK: Aneinu [4:21] RECORDING: Monajat SOURCE/INFO: galeetdardashti.bandcamp.com/album/monajatARTIST: Galeet Dardashti WORK: The Awakening [6:01] RECORDING: Monajat SOURCE/INFO: galeetdardashti.bandcamp.com/album/monajat

Taking as a starting point Renaissance and Medieval music, Lisel (aka Eliza Bagg – a member of vocal group Roomful of Teeth), creates hybrid music that blends her classical vocal training with electronic production techniques found in hyperpop (like the ‘bass drop' and frequent use of Auto-Tune.) Lisel has absorbed the capabilities of technology into her own music through experiments with Ableton, adding ambient electric sounds and aesthetics, and goes for maximalist sound on Patterns for Auto-Tuned Voices and Delay. Running Ableton, and a Novation Launch Pad for the processing effects, Eliza Bagg, as Lisel, performs some of these studio creations, live on New Sounds. - Caryn Havlik

Disability as a Creative Source with Molly Joyce

The transcript for this episode is available here. About Molly Joyce Composer and performer Molly Joyce has been deemed one of the "most versatile, prolific and intriguing composers working under the vast new-music dome" by The Washington Post. Her music has additionally been described as "serene power" (New York Times), written to "superb effect" (The Wire), and "unwavering" and "enveloping" (Vulture). Her work is concerned with disability as a creative source. She has an impaired left hand from a previous car accident. The primary vehicle in her pursuit is her electric vintage toy organ, an instrument she bought on eBay that suits her body and engages her disability on a compositional and performative level. Her debut full-length album, Breaking and Entering, featuring toy organ, voice, and electronic sampling of both sources was released in June 2020 on New Amsterdam Records, and has been praised by New Sounds as "a powerful response to something (namely, physical disability of any kind) that is still too often stigmatized, but that Joyce has used as a creative prompt." Molly is a graduate of The Juilliard School (graduating with scholastic distinction), Royal Conservatory in The Hague (recipient of the Frank Huntington Beebe Fund Grant), and Yale School of Music. She holds an Advanced Certificate in Disability Studies from CUNY School of Professional Studies and is an alumnus of the National YoungArts Foundation. She has studied with Samuel Adler, Martin Bresnick, Guus Janssen, David Lang, Missy Mazzoli, Martijn Padding, Christopher Theofanidis, and has served on the composition faculty of New York University, Wagner College, and Berklee Online, teaching subjects including Disability and the Arts, Music Technology, Music Theory, and Orchestration. She is currently a Dean's Doctoral Fellow at the University of Virginia, focusing on Composition and Computer Technologies. Nigeria is today the undisputed powerhouse of African pop music. Call it Naija Pop, Afrobeats, Afropop or what have you. The likes of Burna Boy, Wizkid, Yemi Alade and Tiwa Savage are giants on the scene. In this program we hear the latest from these and others, and sample action on the Afrobeat and Alté scene. We also speak with key artists in Nigeria and the U.S. about the rising social activism among Nigerian artists in the era of the EndSARS movement against police violence. Produced by Banning Eyre.

The four members of Combo Chimbita are from Colombia. But they met and formed their band here in New York. From their home base in Queens, Combo Chimbita plays a kind of tropical futurist pop that combines elements of Afro-Colombian spirituality, razor-sharp social commentary, and booty-shaking dance rhythms. Hear their set, live from the New Sounds 40th Anniversary Party from Brooklyn Bowl, and an interview with bass/synth player Prince of Queens.  Set list: "El Camino", "Testigo", "La Perla", "Sin Tiempo", "Ahomale", "Oya" IRE by Combo Chimbita

The party band, Red Baraat, is from Brooklyn, but their music grows out of the hard-partying tradition of Punjabi wedding bands. They're a big band full of brass instruments and drums, rock guitar, jazzy improvisations, occasionally some rap, (both the dhol and drumset keep the groove going), who bring the festivities with them wherever they go. Hear their set, live from the New Sounds 40th Anniversary Party from Brooklyn Bowl, and an interview with drummer and composer Sunny Jain, who leads the band on dhol, the double-sided drum, one which is definitely an “outside” instrument. Hear Jain play his new, bigger, responsive Sufi dhol from Lahore, Pakistan, which suffered a strap malfunction during their set, and the band barely missed a beat. - Caryn Havlik Set list: “Chaal Baby” “Kala Mukra” “Zindabad” “Gaadi of Truth” “Shruggy Ji” “Ishq Tera Tadpave” “Thumbs Up”
