With that band on indefinite hiatus, Greep is now focused on his own songs, which range freely across the musical landscape, encompassing jazz-rock and blues, but also country and Brazilian music. Hold on tight, for there are "stop-starts, blasts and bangs, and whispered soliloquies as [the listener] is never quite sure when, or whether, [one is] supposed to be shocked; or laugh", (Rough Trade Records). For the last 5 years, London band Black Midi have pushed experimental rock music to new and thrilling places, inspired as much by jazz fusion as math rock and no wave. But last month, quite unexpectedly, the trio split up. It was meant to be kept a secret, until singer and frontman Geordie Greep announced the news on Instagram. One week later, he announced his debut solo album, boldly titled The New Sound (out this month via Rough Trade Records).  Stu visited Geordie at his home shortly after these two bits of indie-shaking news broke, to discuss the end of the Black Midi and the start of Greep's solo career, as well as his time at the prestigious Brit School, and what makes Angels by Robbie Williams actually a very good pop song.  Also on this week's show, Greg and Stu pick apart the week's headlines, lament being so rubbish at predicting who would win the Mercury Prize, and count down the greatest award show speeches of all time.  You can watch clips of the podcast online now, just give us a follow on Instagram @midnightchatspod.  Further reading/listening/viewing Black Midi Loud And Quiet interview Geordie Greep 'Holy Holy' video Lenny Henry full MOBO 2015 speech Bjork's grateful grapefruit Credits: Editing by Stuart Stubbs  Mixing and mastering by Flo Lines Artwork by Kate PriorSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Why Japan is #1 for students; a new sound coming

Send us a Text Message.Up until now I've been recording most of these episodes speaking into a half-empty clothes cupboard. It's sounded surprisingly good, at least to me, but from next week I will have a slightly more professional setup: a dedicated — though tiny — space, basic soundproofing on the walls, and a new mic. I hope we'll be able to hear the difference. In migration news this week, I came across an article featuring data on students going overseas to study in the past year. I must admit that my western bias shows when I say that I didn't even imagine the country that was the #1 destination — Japan. Why Japan? Thanks to a engaging documentary by Dipesh Kharel, The Japanese Dream: Nepali students in Japan, I learned that there are many reasons. First, visa requirements are  easier for Japan than for some other countries. Once there, students can work part-time — a set number of hours a week — which is also key. By the way, according to the documentary, there were 45,000 Nepali students in the country in 2023. This compares to 5,000 Nepalis in total in Japan in 2005. A fun fact that I learned: there are 600 Nepali restaurants in Tokyo alone.Dipesh follows a handful of students, from when they're studying Japanese in Nepal and planning to migrate, to their arrival in Japan and in later years, juggling responsibilities of work and family. I like that he doesn't paint a fake, rosy portrait, but shows some of their hard times also. There's a particularly poignant scene when he's interviewing the father of Rajkumar, who's now in Japan. The father tells him that the day his son learned that he got his visa he had the equivalent of $18. Six days later he had raised $15,000 so his son could migrate. "I can't pay this back," he told his son, meaning the burden was now shifted to the young man. Welcome to episode 115 of Holly Jolly X'masu! In this episode, I talk about the 1962 compilation, “Young Christmas.” [] I hope you enjoyed “Young Christmas.” It's one of my favorite albums, not just because of the music, but also because of how scarce it is, and how lucky I was to get such an affordable copy. When I started researching this, I didn't realize this would turn into a True Crime episode, at least in part. There was a lot more I could have added to Katsumi Shigeru's story, but after multiple cuts and edits, I still had to adjust the tempo on that part of the episode to get it to fit within the running time of the song. I lost a fair amount of sleep, but I'm glad I was able to get this out before the end of the month. I'm still a little behind schedule, but I'm going to try to get a few things done this week so that I'm not scrambling at the last minute with my Christmas In July episodes. If things work out, I might add another episode to my July schedule. That said, join me back here next month for at least two really fun episodes. Up first is the 1970 album, “X'mas Golden Hits” by the Candle-Light Orchestra and the Singers Three. It has a great New Sound vibe, and if you liked Kayo Ishu's “Scat Christmas,” you're sure to enjoy this one. Then join me on the 25th for my fifth annual Christmas In July special. I'll cover a selection of tropical and summery Christmas songs. It's always an enjoyable episode and you won't want to miss it. As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you'd like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know. Remember, I've added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you'd like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I've also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I'll be trying to add more. Half of any proceeds or donations received will be donated to support the people of Ukraine, while the rest will be used to purchase new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!

We live in a erotically dissonant and carnally confused age. One the one hand, young people are having a lot less sex these days; on the other, they are listening intently to the music of erotically dissonant artists like Billy Eilish and Taylor Swift. I first came across the ideas of “erotic dissonance” and “carnal confusion” in “The New Sound of Sexual Frustration”, an intriguing Atlantic piece by their prolific culture critic Spencer Kornhaber “I've listened to Billie Eilish's "Blue" 400 times already”, the obsessive Kornhaber confesses. So what did the author of ON DIVAS learn about the carnal confusion of today's youth? Is the music of Eilish and Swift just another explosion of youthful sexual frustration? Or is our age of anxiety creating something quite new - a culture of anxiety in which sex is always in our heads but not in our beds. Spencer Kornhaber is a staff writer at The Atlantic, where he covers music and popular culture. Prior to joining The Atlantic as an editor in 2011, he wrote for Spin, The A.V. Club, and OC Weekly. In 2019, he won the Excellence in Column Writing Award from NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. Crashes are a common occurrence in bike races and can have a significant impact on the outcome. Equipment choices, such as helmets, can vary between male and female riders. National championships are a significant achievement and can be earned through individual and team performances. Road races can be challenging, and pacing and strategy are crucial for success. Scott's fourth-place finish at Unbound was a remarkable achievement. The decision to skip important family events for bike races is a personal choice that depends on individual priorities. Alexey's decision to skip Unbound for his brother's wedding sparked a debate about the importance of races versus family events.
