Matt Pond PA - "Imagining Everything" from the 2024 album Call and Response on 131 Records Today's Song of the Day marks a homecoming for singer/songwriter Matt Pond who launched his career in 1998 as matt pond PA, but tried to ditch the name the past few years, releasing an album under the moniker The Natural Lines in 2022. But now, he's re-embraced his original band name with the release of this new single. "Our album as The Natural Lines was one of my favorite experiences in making music,” Matt told Brooklyn Vegan last year. “We thoughtfully built songs and a band that represented the inner world of the post-pandemic return to reality. But as it stands now, I've said everything I can in that incarnation. I gave myself a strange band name back in Philly and it's been impossible to shake. As much as I love to run, there's no running from who I am.” “In the song and video for ‘Imagining Everything,'” he adds, “I can hear the worst thoughts about myself — about all of us. Nevertheless, I want to find a way back to loving this world.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week I'm talking to teachers AND musicians, Shanna and Eric of By Light We Loom, who have their music has been featured in movies and countless stages. We check in about how music can teach us about teaching, focusing in on four areas: presence, process, rhythm, and emergence.  About Shanna and Eric Teaching Bios, first! Shanna Delaney:  Shanna has taught at Lake Local Schools in Hartville, Ohio for the past 14 years.  She pairs a dedication to empowering her students with a passion for social justice to engage her students in meaningful and authentic learning that truly makes a difference.  She currently teaches College Credit Plus British Literature II, College Credit Plus College Composition 1, Public Speaking, and Women's Studies Media and Literature.   Eric Ling: Eric has taught at Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio for the past 13 years.  Eric's passion for education and dedication to his students drives him to design unique courses that engage students in authentic learning.  He has taught history, economics, and business courses. This summer Eric is making a transition into administration as the Dean of Faculty where he will focus on engaging teachers in best practices and driving innovation from an institutional level.     Band Bio:By Light We Loom, a husband and wife indie-pop duo out of Cleveland, Ohio, combines creative beats, vintage synths, soaring vocals, and intimate harmonies with story-folk songwriting sensibilities to deliver high-energy performances that promise to move your heart and feet in equal measures. Since its origin in late 2014, By Light We Loom has toured heavily with highlight stops at MidPoint Music Festival, Brite Winter Festival, NEO Cycle Music Festival, The Heights Music Hop, and opening for notable indie acts: The Paper Kites, Car Seat Headrest, Maps & Atlases, Telekinesis, Lucy Dakus, Sondre Lerche, Deep Sea Diver, The Mynabirds, Twin Forks, The Kin, Kopecky, Radiation City, Matt Pond PA, Frontier Ruckus, and more. By Light We Loom released their debut EP, “The Ignition,” in May of 2015 to critical acclaim and local radio play. Maturing their sound through live performances, they quickly released a more realized EP, “Caught in the Tide,” in January of 2016. “Caught in the Tide” received nationwide radio play, landing the album in the Top 100 of the College Radio Charts. The success of this album resulted in By Light We Loom being named Cleveland Magazine's “Best Indie Rock Artist of 2016” . Songs from “Caught in the Tide” were also featured in episodes of PBS's “Roadtrip Nation” in 2017 and 2018. They followed up this release with an intimate four-song EP "Canopy" that pays tribute to Eric's father who passed suddenly the year prior.  Most recently, By Light We Loom's original music was featured in the award winning film "The Enormity of Life."  Eric and Shanna are currently working hard on a new release due out in October of this year. Retirement was short-lived for Matt Pond PA. The eponymous front man very publicly toyed with the moniker that’s continued to tie him to his home state, but a 20 year run like that isn’t something one walks away from so easy. Pond continues a prolific career, often teaming with producer and guitarist Chris Hansen, a core collaborator and creative life mate. This month, the duo released Songs of Disquiet, a seven-song EP written and produced amid the current pandemic. It’s an album that, among other things, maintains his long standing passion for juxtaposition loving cover songs with originals. Ahead of the pandemic clamping down on travel, Pond came down from his nearby Hudson Valley, NY home to discuss the ups and downs of a life in indie rock.

Racking up an astonishing 13 proper albums within the last two decades -- not including singles or EP releases -- Matt Pond has solidified himself as one of the most prolific singer-songwriters working today. Though the name Matt Pond PA was retired in 2017 (a moniker for his recording and touring band of which he was the sole consistent member), his work over the last 12 years with musician and engineer Chris Hansen has led to film and commercial scoring, as well as An Orchestrated Impulse, a new multi-sensory collaboration with visual artist Eva Magill-Oliver, comprised of twelve paintings each paired with an instrumental composition in a different key. On today's show, Matt muses about The Minutemen's "Double Nickels on the Dime," why he's had to abandon three completely separate record collections over the years, the Beatles-influenced stage name he almost went by when he moved to Brooklyn and how his mom's confusion between John Waite and Tom Waits paved Matt's musical journey. The installation of An Orchestrated Impulse debuts October 11th at the O+ Festival in Kingston, NY with full performance details at orchestratedimpulse.com, and accompanying music available for digital download at anorchestratedimpulse.bandcamp.com. For over two decades, Polyvinyl Records -- which started in the small Midwestern town of Danville, IL -- has been releasing various offshoots of indie-rock with touches of folk, hardcore punk, chamber pop or new wave, including records from Braid, Japandroids, Of Montreal, Joan of Arc, Deerhoof, Alvvays, Beach Slang, Jeff Rosenstock, Matt Pond PA, Owen, Jay Som, Mates of State and countless others. On today's show, Polyvinyl co-founder Matt Lunsford remembers the hands-on DIY nature of the label’s first releases, the early importance of documenting a scene (along with co-founder and wife Darcie), how long their lead time is at pressing plants for a label of their caliber and adapting quickly to how listeners consume music. Plus, we’ll learn more about recent or upcoming Polyvinyl releases from American Football, Pedro the Lion and Rainer Maria. On today's episode I talk to musician Matt Pond. Originally from New Hampshire, Matt began writing and releasing music in 1998 as Matt Pond PA. Debuting with the album Deer Apartments, the band quickly gained momentum after claiming top honors in an unsigned bands competition sponsored by CDNOW. Since then, Matt - along with a rotating cast of musical collaborators - has released almost two dozen albums and EPs on labels like Polyvinyl and BMG. His latest, Winter Lives, was just released late last year on Matt's new indie label 131 Records. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.
