Whether the stars aligned or the calendars agree on the coming of Christ, one thing is certain - the place. Another confirmation that Christ has come is the place of his birth, Bethlehem-Ephratah. He came is such a lowly state as to renew our confidence, this is the Christ, the Son of the Living God.
2021.12.19 - Advent: Love - Micah 5:2-5a - Michael Mills, Pastor - Agape Baptist Church - Fort Worth, Texas
Opening Song: O Little Town of Bethlehem by Lewis Henry Redner and Phillips Brooks, arranged by Ross Fishburn and Shane Barnard Lyrics: O little town of Bethlehem How still we see thee lie Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting light The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight For Christ is born of Mary And gathered all above While mortals sleep The angels keep their watch Of wondering love O morning stars together Proclaim the holy birth And praises sing to God the King And peace to men on earth How silently how silently The wondrous gift is given So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of His Heaven No ear may hear His calling But in this world of sin Where meek souls will receive Him still The dear Christ enters in O holy Child of Bethlehem Descend to us we pray Cast out our sin and enter in Be born to us today We hear the Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell O come to us abide with us Our Lord Emmanuel Passage: 2 But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days. 3 Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labor has given birth; then the rest of his brothers shall return to the people of Israel. 4 And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth. 5 And he shall be their peace. When the Assyrian comes into our land and treads in our palaces, then we will raise against him seven shepherds and eight princes of men; (Micah 5:2–5 ESV) Musical Reflection: O Come, O Come Emmanuel (VENI, VENI, EMMANUEL) by Thomas Helmore Reflection Notes: The tune VENI IMMANUEL comes from a 15th century chant and originally served as part of a requiem mass. Thomas Helmore adapted it for congregational use as a hymn in the late 1800s, while still retaining the speech-like flow of the original chant. The text dates back to the 8th century and was translated from Latin to English by J. M. Neal. Prayer: Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and as we are sorely hindered by our sins from running the race that is set before us, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.
Why is there so much injustice in the world, and what hope is there for justice?
To give us hope, Micah answers the questions "Who Is Coming?" "Where Will He Come From?" and "What Will He Do?"
In the book of Micah, things are looking hopeless for the people of Judah. God uses Micah to bring a prophecy about God's Eternal Ruler to be born in little Bethlehem that was meant to keep them hoping in God's promises rather than their circumstances. In dark times, we too can hope in God's Eternal Ruler.
Micah 5:1-5 English Standard Version The Ruler to Be Born in Bethlehem 5 [a] Now muster your troops, O daughter[b] of troops; siege is laid against us; with a rod they strike the judge of Israel on the cheek. 2 [c] But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days. From the beginning God had a plan to give His people a King. A King who would be both a humble servant, and a triumphant conquerer. Our framework for such a one as this is found only in God Himself.

Sermon Series - Hope is on the WayPastor Gary MorelloSermon on 12-12-21
Most would agree that the past two years have been scary. Some people have feared death or sickness from COVID. Others have feared the vaccine mandate. Many have struggled with jobs, relationship issues, and many other things. In our passage in Micah 5, we see that Israel is in a really scary situation as well. They are about to be destroyed by outside nations. But in the midst of this scary time, there is a prophecy of hope. Concluding our study of Christmas through the lens of the Old Testament we look at where the Messiah would be born and why it was so important for us to know.

Micah 5 - 1:09 . Micah 6 - 4:14 . Micah 7 - 8:48 . Isaiah 50 - 13:53 . Isaiah 51 - 16:40 . As we finish out the second half of the book of Micah, we'll immediately see another crystal clear prophecy; this one predicts that the coming Messiah will be born in Bethlehem, a small town that was unlikely to have anything significant take place within it. God promises that one day he will remove those earthly and idolatrous occupations which keep his people from worshipping him rightly, asserting that nations who have not obeyed him will receive his anger and wrath. Finally, Micah looks past the coming destruction of Israel to declare the future hope of redemption for those who repent from their sin and serve the Lord.:::Christian Standard Bible translation. All music written and produced by John Burgess Ross.Co-produced by Bobby Brown, Eric Williamson & the Christian Standard Biblefacebook.com/commuterbibleinstagram.com/commuter_bibletwitter.com/CommuterPodpatreon.com/commuterbibleadmin@commuterbible.org
