Have you ever thought to ask God for just a crumb? Have you considered that the smallest piece of God's mercy is extravagantly more than what you need? Join us on this episode of the Live Like It's True podcast, where Shannon is joined by Erika VanHaitsma, from "The Context and Color of the Bible" podcast, to hear about how Jesus is astonished by the extravagant faith of a Canaanite woman, who is more than happy to beg, like a puppy, for a crumb-sized helping of what Jesus has to offer.Guest: Erika VanHaitsmaBible Passage: The Faith of a Canaanite Woman - Matthew 15:21-28Get your Free Resource: False Narrative WatchlistRecommended Resources: Check out Erika's new book, "Faith Walk; 50 Daily Devotionals" on Shannon's Amazon Storefront HEREJesus's Proof that We'll Get New Bodies in Heaven - Erika's Previous Episode on Live Like It's TrueThe Context and Color of the Bible PodcastResound Media Network: www.ResoundMedia.ccMusic: Cade PopkinErika VanHaitsmaErika is married to Bryan and together they have five children, whom she homeschools. Send us a textAs the book of Micah comes to a close, we see connections being made back to the Joshua and the conquest of the land. But then you can go even further back and see connections to the Exodus and the Song of Moses in Exodus 15. Looking back gives Micah and the people hope as they look at their present reality. We can have that same hope because we find similarities in Revelation 15 that our future will have that same redemption story. Send us a textThe court case came to a close in chapter 6 and now it's time to see what happens. We watch as evil and suffering surround the people. It's not a good time for Jerusalem. BUT Micah makes a statement in verse 7 that we all need to say and remember. Then in verses 8-10 he explains why he has hope. Bryan called this an invitation for us to tell the world why we can hope in the midst of darkness. Bryan VanHaitsma is the digital media director for Revive Our Hearts. Send us a textThere is so much tone and attitude in these verses. You'll miss it though if you don't understand the context of the story. Bryan compares this chapter to the closing argument of the courtroom drama. God is pulling in His witnesses (the mountains), and the people are using logic fallacies when they don't want answer God's questions. Ultimately, God tells the people exactly what He expects of them, and we would do well to listen and obey as well.Want to listen to the different series we mentioned at the end? Episode: Matt Lynch speaks with Jerusalem University College president and Biblical World co-host Oliver Hersey. We discuss study of the world of the Bible and his thesis that the Sinai Covenant can be illuminated through knowledge of ancient marriage customs. Knowing ancient marriage customs can help us understand the plundering of the Egyptians, the birth of Moses, the genealogy in Exodus 6, and the events at Sinai! Enjoy. Guest/Co-Host: Dr. Oliver Hersey is the president of Jerusalem University College in Jerusalem, Israel, an institution committed to helping students engage the geography, history, archaeology, languages, and cultures of the biblical world. He loves providing students opportunities to see the contours of the Holy Land and teaching them about the cultural backgrounds, history, and literary traditions of the ancient Near East, particularly as they inform our understanding of the Bible. His research interests lie in comparing ancient Near Eastern texts with biblical texts. Exemplary of this is his dissertation titled “The Marriage at Mount Sinai: Reading Exodus in the Context of ancient Near Eastern Diplomatic Marriages.” Hersey completed his PhD in Old Testament from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and has taught at North Park University in Chicago. SummaryIn this episode, Alan Briggs and J.R. Briggs discuss the topic of cynicism and its impact on leaders. They explore the cultural prevalence of cynicism and how it can erode trust and hope. J.R. shares his personal experience with cynicism and the pernicious effect it had on his life. The difference between cynicism and skepticism is also discussed. The conversation delves into the challenges leaders face during election season and offers practices for guarding against cynicism. The history of cynicism is explored, highlighting its relevance in today's society. The episode concludes with a reflection on personal cynicism and the importance of self-awareness. About J.R. Briggs Dr. J.R. Briggs lives with a clear and focused calling: to serve, guide, and equip hungry leaders who want to grow healthier and thrive. In 2011, he started Kairos Partnerships, an organization committed to serving hungry kingdom leaders through leadership coaching, consulting, speaking, and teaching. He loves investing in the KP team of equippers so Kairos Partnerships can invest in all leaders who desire care and equipping. For more than 15 years, J.R. served in pastoral roles in mega-churches, church plants, and house church networks. Since starting Kairos Partnerships, he has served and invested in a wide variety of leaders, including business owners, pastors, university administrators, non-profit directors, entrepreneurs, attorneys, Blackhawk army helicopter operators, U.S. Olympic athletes, and Division I college coaches. In addition to coaching leaders and consulting with businesses, organizations, universities, and non-profits, he also speaks and teaches. He has taught in higher education since 2017. Wright Online, Missio Alliance, Boundless.org and Relevant Magazine, and several others. He hosts the Resilient Leaders podcast, a weekly podcast equipping leaders in a wide variety of backgrounds to grow in their resilience and health. He serves on the Board of Directors for Jerusalem University College and the Board of Advisors for the Institute for Bible Reading. J.R. loves swimming, kayaking, hiking, reading, traveling to new places, eating fish tacos, and watching the Philadelphia Phillies. He and his wife Megan have been married for over 21 years and have two teenage sons, Carter and Bennett. They live in Lansdale, PA in the greater Philadelphia area. Takeaways Cynicism is a prevalent issue in our culture and can erode trust and hope. Leaders are particularly susceptible to cynicism and must guard against it. Cynicism is different from skepticism, as it assumes a closed-minded posture. During election season, leaders need to be mindful of cynicism and strive to bring hope. Practices such as gratitude, giving others the benefit of the doubt, and surrounding oneself with hopeful people can help guard against cynicism.

A lot can happen in four centuries. Technologies have skyrocketed, new nations have formed, and yet one book has changed very little in as much time . . . the King James Bible. On today's episode of the Great Stories podcast, Charles Morris returns to a conversation he had with Dr. Donald Brake in 2011 — the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible. They discuss how this longstanding Bible translation revolutionized the English-speaking world by exploring the KJV's mysterious beginnings, the men who translated it, and its incredible impact for many generations. Dr. Brake is an authority on the history of the Bible and has been an avid collector of rare Bibles and manuscripts for more than thirty years. His is one of the most complete private collections of rare English Bibles and Greek New Testaments in North America. He served as President of Jerusalem University College and Vice President and Dean of Multnomah Biblical Seminary. Even if it's been years since you've read the King James Bible, this episode on the fascinating history of the English language's longest-running Scripture translation is something every Christian should consider.

She currently serves as the ministry's USA Director and is a member of the ICEJ's international Board of Directors. Susan's involvement with the ICEJ began as a graduate student at Jerusalem University College in 1980, the same year that the Christian Embassy was first established. Upon completing her master's degree in Judeo-Christian Studies, she returned from Israel with a heart to further the Embassy's mission among fellow Americans. After a season assisting the ministry's international leadership to host a series of high-profile pro-Israel conferences across the USA, she was asked to head up the ICEJ's US Branch. In addition to a master's degree in Judeo-Christian Studies, she holds a bachelor's degree in theology from Oral Roberts University and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws by Piedmont International University in 2018. Susan is an author, gifted teacher, and international speaker. She is often called upon to address complex and sensitive issues such as anti-Semitism, Islam, Jewish-Christian relations, and current events in the Middle East to a diverse range of audiences. Her experience working with Arabs, Jews, and Christians from many national and denominational backgrounds has equipped her to handle delicate topics central to an understanding of Israel with extraordinary clarity and grace. In recent years she has produced a number of educational tools to enable other Christians to do the same. Susan has built the US Branch of the ICEJ into a scripturally sound and reputable ministry, evidenced in its leadership of one of the strongest networks of Evangelical leaders in America—the American Christian Leaders for Israel (ACLI). Susan and her husband lived and worked for many years in Washington, DC, where she developed a close working relationship with the Israeli Embassy and strong connections with the US Jewish community at large. They currently reside in South Florida. Would you be surprised to find that David wasn't the underdog, going up against Goliath? Did you know the Pharisees were not enemies of Jesus, and every single Christmas pageant you've watched was dead wrong about something we all just assumed was true. Our guest today (Marc Turnage) points to a handful of beliefs most people hold to, that the bible simply does not support. Marc who considers Seacoast to be his church from afar, leads educational tours of the Holy Land through his organization Biblical Expeditions. He holds an M.A. in Jewish History and New Testament Backgrounds from Jerusalem University College and is currently finishing his PhD in the Land of Israel Studies Department at a University in Israel. At top of the episode, Kathy Roseborough, Lynne Stroy and Joey Svendsen discuss generosity in the context of tipping and as Kathy and Lynne are both leaders at Seacoast, the three also touch on women leadership in the context of Seacoast Church culture.Stay ConnectedWebsite | Facebook Discussion Page In this episodeMarc Turnage // Website / Podcast / SubstackKathy Roseborough / Instagram Joey Svendsen, host / InstagramLynne Stroy, host / InstagramExecutive Producer: Josh SurrattProducer/Editor: Joey SvendsenSound Engineer/Editor: JT PriceSound Engineer: Katelyn VandiverMusic, theme song: Joel T. Episode: Biblical World co-host Kyle Keimer discusses his research on King Hezekiah's preparations for the Assyrian attack in 701 BCE. How do archaeologists determine the nature and extent of Hezekiah's defensive network? Did the Judeans use fire signals? How did the king prepare for war (and pay for it)? Listen in for a fascinating discussion of Keimer's archaeological, biblical, and geographical thoughts on this crucial event in Judah's history. Guest: Kyle Keimer is Senior Research Fellow in the Department of History and Archaeology at Macquarie University, where he was Senior Lecturer in Archaeology, History, and Language of Ancient Israel. He also lectures at Jerusalem University College. For over 20 years he has been excavating in Israel and Cyprus and was co-director of the Khirbet el-Rai excavations. He loves digging as much as he loves working with ancient texts, especially the books of 1-2 Samuel and Isaiah. His research currently focuses on the early Israelite monarchy in text and archaeology. He's co-edited Registers and Modes of Communication in the Ancient Near East (Routledge) and The Ancient Israelite World (Routledge), and he's published articles in various journals. His UCLA Ph.D. dissertation was on "The Socioeconomic Impact of Hezekiah's Preparations for Rebellion." Give: Help support OnScript's Biblical World as we grow and develop. Click HERE.

Chandler is a Ph.D. candidate at Bar Ilan University in Ramat Gan, Israel. He holds two M.A. degrees in the fields of Semitic languages, Hebrew Bible, and archaeology from Trinity International University in Deerfield, IL. He is a faculty member and the former Dean of Administration at Jerusalem University College. He is also a member of ARCH Jerusalem, an NGO devoted to preserving at-risk cultural heritage in Jerusalem. With Chandler we discussed his work as archaeologist focusing on the Iron Age period, we also discussed questions related various digging and structures of that historical period. Since Chandler was stuck in Jerusalem during Covid, it was very interesting to hear a different view of how to use that time for some new discoveries. Chandler is the author of Approaching Jerusalem which aims to be a trove of accessible writing about ancient and living Jerusalem, including its geographical setting, early exploration, archaeological excavations, architecture, history, people, and more. This newsletter is both an extension of the modern quest to uncover ancient Jerusalem and a self-reflection of how the drive to study Jerusalem has influenced the city we experience today. https://approachingjerusalem.substack.com@chandler_collinsSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/jerusalemunplugged. Welcome to the Love Where You Are podcast! In today's episode I am joined by Author Michelle Sanchez. Michelle is passionate for disciples to be transformed as they transform the world. She serves as Executive Minister of Make and Deepen Disciples for the Evangelical Covenant Church. She has also served on the advisory board of the Institute for Bible reading, ministered to international students with Cru in New York City, and engaged in three global gatherings of the Lausanne Movement. Michelle earned a Master of Divinity and Master of Theology from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, completed spiritual direction training at Boston College, and studied the life and times of Jesus at Jerusalem University College. She has published four books and is a regular columnist with Outreach Magazine. Hey friend, It is difficult navigating the division of our world, and it can be especially confusing for our kids who see it everywhere. As we raise the next generation of Christ followers, we as parents need tools to equip our kids to be a part of the solution to the division we see all around us. In this week's episode I sat down with author, Michelle Sanchez to discuss the beauty of community, how God created community, and how we are all made in the image of God. Michelle reminds us about the importance of communicating with our kids and how it is in fact at the core of scripture. Jesus reached out to the outcasts, so must we; and He gave us the great commission to seek out all people across the world. On this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, take time to listen to this encouraging conversation! You can connect with Michelle through Facebook, Instagram, and her website where you can buy God's Beloved Community or her other resources such as, Color-Courageous Discipleship. FAVORITE TAKE-AWAYS: *What was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s real dream? We remember his "I have a dream" speech but sometimes we forget he was a pastor and his real dream was a spiritual one, for all of us to love one another as a body of Christ. *Our kids are experiencing broken community, and Michelle offers the solution to communicate with them about it. It all begins in Genesis, even with God Himself as the Trinity, Three in One, there was community--likewise, humans were built for community. *Every culture has its strengths and weaknesses. One strength in the United States is our independence, but it also becomes a weakness because we lack a strong sense of community and understand its importance; other cultures may lack individual independence but succeed with community bonds. REMEMBER: *Jesus reached out to the marginalized. "It's all about the heart." - Michelle. *Reconciliation as disciples hasn't been at the forefront of priorities. *We are here to advance the Kingdom of God, all nations like a colorful tapestry.
Dr. Paul Wright talks with us about the fascinating book Rose Guide to the Feasts, Festivals and Fasts of the Bible. Dr. Wright began teaching at Jerusalem University College in 1996. He was the 10th President of Jerusalem University College from 2002 until 2021. Dr. Wright is an ordained minister and published author. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Noah interviews Michelle Sanchez on what color courageous discipleship looks like. Welcome to episode twenty-eight of New Creation Conversations. In today's conversation I am joined by a former colleague from my days at Azusa Pacific University – Dr. Bob Mullins. Bob is an alum of Southern California College, a Master's degree from Fuller Seminary, did Graduate work at Jerusalem University College and completed his PhD at Hebrew University of Jerusalem.Bob came to APU after spending a number of years in Israel. His interests encompass the fields of archaeology, history, geography, and biblical studies in an effort to better understand the ancient Near Eastern world of the Bible. Bob has served on a number of archaeological excavations, but in the last ten years he has been co-leading (with a team from Hebrew University) an excavation project at Abel Beth Maacah, an ancient city mentioned two or three times in the Bible that existed in the northern part of Israel just 1.2 miles south of the border with Lebanon.I got to know Bob well serving on faculty together at APU, but my son Noah and I also had the privilege of traveling with Dr. Mullins to Israel with a group of supporters from the university to explore the Holy Land, but also to get to spend a day seeing and participating in the early stages of the dig at Abel Beth Maacah. In our conversation, Bob and I talk about the exciting things he and the team have discovered over the last decade working on this dig project, we talk about what we learn from biblical archaeology that adds to our faith, and we talk about his work on The Atlas of the Biblical World (published by Fortress Press) and why time and place matter so much in our study of the Scriptures.
Veronica and Erika continue their discussion about life in first century Israel and how Scripture influenced daily life. In this episode they talk about "keshers," hyper links in the text, that relate back to another verse. Erika showed how Jesus used the word "love" and pulled from two different Old Testament verses to answer which is the greatest commandment. Veronica pointed out that on the cross Jesus quotes Psalm 22:1. We also said Luke 23:29-30 connects back to Hosea 10:12.Erika shares an exciting connection found in Matthew 22:15 with the Herodians and paying taxes which relates back to Genesis 1:27. Jesus gave a powerful lesson to the people standing front of Him but also to us today. You can join us on our Facebook page called "The Context and Color of the Bible" as well as Erika's website erikavanhaitsma.com.We didn't reference specific books in this podcast but our research comes from Brad Young, Dwight A. For the summer Veronica and Erika are discussing the lifestyle of the average Jew in first century Israel. For most of this podcast, we will be explaining children's education. Starting at age five, boys and girls begin to memorize and study Scripture. Listen to the podcast to find out which book children started memorizing. Even before children started learning the Scriptures though, parents would give the child a Torah scroll with honey on it. They wanted the child's first impression to be that Scripture is sweet. What are you teaching the children in your life about the study of Scripture? From ages five to ten boys and girls would memorize the first five books of the Old Testament. Then from ages ten to thirteen they would memorize the rest of the Old Testament as well as the discussions and debates that surrounded those books. They were trained how to think and ask questions about the Scripture. They were given a chance to wrestle with the truths found there. This education did not just happen inside school walls though. From morning till night while they worked together, they were reviewing the Scriptures. How would reviewing Scripture affect your attitude and activity? At age thirteen most boys go to work with dad while the girls learn how to run a household from their mothers. Erika points out how women were elevated in that society because of all the roles she filled. We left you with two takeaways from today's show. First you have the ability to influence those around you. Don't underestimate your ability to be light. Second, we need to know our Scripture more and regularly be wrestling with it with those around us. Ask those hard questions and see what your friends and family have to say. While we didn't specifically mention any authors who we've learned from, our information came from Dwight A. Pryor, Lois Tverberg, Brad Young, Kenneth Bailey, First Fruits of Zion, and Jerusalem University College in Israel. How can you live in the tension of the ‘now, and not yet?’ Oliver Hersey and J.R. Briggs, author of The Sacred Overlap - Learning to Live in the Space In Between reflect on the mystery of the Christian life, as it relates to prayer, community and difficult questions we wrestle with. Briggs said “If you think about the overlapped life – it’s kind of like closing one eye. You can still see, but your depth perception and your peripheral vision is skewed significantly. We need both eyes in order to see with sharpness, clarity and depth.” He talks about the “mandorla,” an almond shaped frame of light that surrounds holy persons in Christian art. Briggs said this concept has been around for a long time. He pointed out that the trinity symbol, includes the mandorla, two overlapping circles with a space in between. Briggs argued that Western culture is uncomfortable with the mystery of faith, due to the Enlightenment. He said “Eastern culture is much more comfortable with mystery, and not having everything solved. That’s the world that Jesus grew up in. If we only understand Him on facts, but we don’t let him be God in the mystery, we really miss out.” J.R. Briggs is the founder of Kairos Partnerships. He hosts the Resilient Leaders podcast, and serves on the Board of Directors with Jerusalem University College. Today, we're chatting with Dr. Phil Collins, executive director of Training and Content Development at the Taylor University Center for Scripture Engagement (TUCSE) and general editor for The Abide Bible. As a part of this work, he leads workshops on how to effectively engage with the Bible, having said, “[e]ngaging with Scripture, ever since I was a boy, has been the most powerful and consistent catalyst for spiritual growth that I've experienced. It is as I meet and know God in his Word that I'm inspired to participate fully in his Kingdom.” He has a bachelor's in Bible Literature and Christian Education from Taylor University, master's in Christian Education from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Purdue University. He also did Old Testament graduate studies at the Institute of Holy Land Studies, now Jerusalem University College. Dr. Collins served six years in youth ministry with Youth for Christ as well as 10 years as a youth pastor. Listed twice in Who's Who Among America's Teachers and once in Who's Who in America, Dr. Collins has used his vocational passion to inspire many young lives to read the Bible with critical, discerning eyes and hearts. He is married to Terri, and together they have two adult children, Luke and Katelyn.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Connect with TWU Student MinistriesFollow us on Instagram
