Have you believed the lie that if you looked better, your marriage would be better? Have you fallen prey to the marketers who tell you that you'll capture your husband's attention if you just lose some weight or get some surgery? Author and Christian body image coach Heather Creekmore discusses what to do if you really want to get a man's attention in a relationship or marriage. The good news is that her suggestions have nothing to do with changing one's physical appearance. Instead, we have to look at root issues like control and pride and the subtle, insidious ways they hide in the ways we treat our husbands. Even if you don't think you're controlling and have never wrestled pride, you may find Heather's examples helpful. If you feel stuck in your marriage and are wondering how you can change things, Heather's practical suggestions at the end of the episode may help you get your man's attention and get on the path to a healthier marriage. **If you feel afraid in your marriage or are suffering from abuse of any kind, please seek help from a Christian counselor, pastor, or someone who can support and advise you in real life. I've definitely seen this pattern's negative effects on my life and relationships, yet I've experienced the freedom of living—not by fear or unhealthy control, but by faith in a God who keeps his promises. Shannon Popkin is on the show discussing her new book, Shaped by God's Promises: Lessons from Sarah on Fear and Faith. Discover how her life—and yours too—was ultimately shaped not by her hardships or heartaches but by the reliable promises of God.   Tune in to discover how:  ·  God makes promises and keeps promises, and in between he invites us to respond by faith—believing the promises will come true.  ·  Faithfulness isn't demonstrated in a minute. We learn God's faithfulness over time. ·  Self-reliance begins where faith ends. We aren't shaped by God's promises when we think he needs our help.   ·  Control is costly. When we play God, we make everyone (including ourselves) miserable.  ·  Rather than ignoring doubts, faith asks, "Is anything too wonderful for God?"  Let's be women shaped by God's promises in the waiting! https://www.shannonpopkin.com/

For more from Shannon, visit shannonpopkin.com, or connect with her on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube.    Show Summary: What are some promises God gives in His Word that you hold on to? God is a Promise Keeper, but all through Scripture we see examples of His people taking things into their own hands. Author and speaker Shannon Popkin has spent some time looking into how Sarah and Abraham immediately discounted the promises God gave them. Shannon realized that even when God makes His ways known, we tend to want things in our timing. Join hosts Elisa Morgan and Vivian Mabuni as they talk with Shannon about how God is a promise keeper on this episode of God Hears Her.    Notes and Quotes:  “I like to think of God's promises as a set of parentheses, you never have one parenthesis without the other. The first is God makes the promise, the second is God keeps the promise.” —Shannon Popkin  “Most of our [life is spent] living in the parentheses and waiting in the parentheses for the promises to come about.” —Elisa Morgan “We don't learn God's faithfulness in a minute. We see His faithfulness over time.” —Shannon Popkin  “God will be faithful, He is a faithful God. He is a God who makes promises and keeps promises, and He invites us to live like it's true that He will keep these promises to us.” —Shannon Popkin   Verses:  John 3:1-21 Matthew 19:14 Genesis 12 Joshua 24:1-4, 14-15 Genesis 3 Matthew 27 Genesis 50:20 Ruth 4 Hebrews 11 John 15:1-17   Links:  God Hears Her website: https://www.godhearsher.org/ God Hears Her email sign-up: https://www.godhearsher.org/sign-upsfmc  Subscribe on iTunes! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-hears-her-podcast/id1511046507?utm_source=applemusic&utm_medium=godhearsher&utm_campaign=podcast Shaped By God's Promises: https://www.shannonpopkin.com/my-books/ Eryn's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/eryneddy/ Vivian's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/vivmabuni/ Shannon's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/shannonpopkin/   MB01Y1MQUWEIJEH

Episode Summary:  Do you constantly compare yourself with others? On social media, in your neighborhood, at church, or in the school drop-off lane, do you push yourself to prove that you measure up . . . and then feel ashamed when you don't? Measuring yourself against others isn't healthy. And it isn't God's plan. In fact, the way of Jesus is completely upside down from this measure-up world. He invites us to follow him and be restored to freedom, confidence, and joy. Join me with Shannon Popkin as we address how to stop comparing yourself to others. Quotables from the episode: The constant effort to prove that I measure up (or try to hide when I don't), does not lead to a life of freedom and joy. Here's what does: learning to live me-free. At its root, comparison places value on our differences. Comparison is really a pride issue—it keeps us focused on ourselves. When we compare ourselves to others, we focus on how we measure up (or don't) like lines on a measuring glass. But Jesus points out the spout—that place where we pour out on others. Comparison 1) distracts me from my purpose; 2) depletes my productivity, and 3) destroys our potential. When we fall prey to comparison, we need to ask ourselves “Is this something Jesus would say to me?” Comparison is a tactic of the enemy, whether we are comparing our appearance, our status, our sin, or even our ministry for Jesus to others'. Humility is a key to combatting comparison. Comparison is often bred because we don't desire to be “less than” others, but in God's economy those who are the least, are considered the greatest. There is NO exclusivity in the kingdom of God. Healthy comparison includes those times we are inspired and learn from others, and are then encouraged to be and do what I am uniquely called to do. Comparison divides us and causes us to back away, when God is calling us to move toward him! When tempted to compare yourself to others, ask yourself “who am I listening to?” Scripture says “my sheep know my voice,” so be sure you are listening for God's voice.   Scripture References: Philippians 2:5-7 ESV Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,[a] 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,[b] 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant James 3:14-15 ESV But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. 15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. Matthew 20:26-27 ESV But whoever would be great among you must be your servant,[c] 27 and whoever would be first among you must be your slave,[d] 28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve,    Recommended Resources:  Comparison Girl: Lessons from Jesus on Me-Free Living in a Measure-Up World by Shannon Popkin Control Girl by Shannon Popkin The Hem of His Garment: Reaching Out to God When Pain Overwhelms by Dr. Michelle Bengtson YouVersion 5-Day Devotional Reaching Out To God When Pain Overwhelms   Today is Going to be a Good Day: 90 Promises to Start Your Day Off Right by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the AWSA 2023 Inspirational Gift Book of the Year Award, the Christian Literary Awards Reader's Choice Award in four categories, and the Christian Literary Awards Henri Award for Devotionals YouVersion 7-Day Devotional, Today is Going to be a Good Day YouVersion 7-Day Devotional, Today is Going to be Another Good Day Breaking Anxiety's Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises by Dr. Michelle Bengtson Breaking Anxiety's Grip Free Study Guide Free 7-Day YouVersion Bible Reading Plan for Breaking Anxiety's Grip Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor's Personal Journey Through Depression by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader's Choice Award Hope Prevails Bible Study by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader's Choice Award Trusting God Through Cancer 1 Trusting God Through Cancer 2 Revive & Thrive Women's Conference Subdue Stress and Anxiety: Fifteen Experts Offer Comprehensive Tools in Ten Minutes a Day. So Much More: Creating Space for God (Lectio Divina and Scripture Meditation)

Comparison is sneaky. One minute we're humming along, content with our life and calling – then suddenly, comparison sneaks in, making us distracted and discontent. We all deal with comparison, measuring ourselves against others. It's a tactic of our enemy to throw us off course. But Jesus has better for us. Shannon Popkin is the author of Comparison Girl, and host of the Live Like It's True podcast. In this conversation, Shannon challenges us with Jesus's words and actions to help us lay aside destructive comparisons and embrace the freedom of living in our calling and gifts. Some highlights from our conversation: Shannon tells us the three ways comparison can throw us off track. It can distract us, deplete us, and destroy us. Shannon shares how she struggled with comparison and what the Lord started to show her in Scripture. We discuss how Jesus used comparison as a teaching tool. For example, He says Mary chose what was better than Martha, and she holds up the widow who gave her last two coins as an example of generosity. When we compare ourselves to these people, they positively challenge us to be more whom we are created to be. This means not all comparison is bad. So, how do we know the difference? Shannon says it simply: we evaluate if it's pride or humility. We talk about the passage we meditated on from Philippians and how Jesus exemplified laying aside all his advantages in an act of ultimate humility. Shannon shared how she meditated on the passage in a different translation (the CSB), which says, “did not consider equality with God as something to be exploited” instead of “used for his own advantage.” We discussed the word “exploited” and what it triggered for both of us. Finally, Shannon gives us a few practical ways to lay aside comparisons during this Lenten season and beyond.   You can connect with Shannon at: https://www.shannonpopkin.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/shannonpopkin/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/shanpopkin/ Listen to the Live Like It's True Podcast: https://www.shannonpopkin.com/bible-podcast/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“God is God and I am not - and that's a really good thing”. While most of us understand this phrase, can we honestly say it's easy to live like it's true? Jesus exemplified valuing others first. He was God but did not use it for his own advantage. Rather, he laid down his life for us. The ultimate act of humility. Through this act, he showed us how to put others ahead of ourselves. Yet - It's easy to get caught in the vortex of comparison. And as soon as we get sucked in, we stop valuing others. In the comparison twister, we can only see ourselves and how we seem to measure up.   In this meditation, we contemplate Jesus' example of placing others ahead of himself and consider how it should impact our lives today. There are many places the Lord can take you in this familiar passage. In fact, it's probably a good meditation to do more than once. After you've listened to this Scripture Experience podcast, head over to the next episode (releases on March 29, 2023) and listen to the interview with Bible study author and teacher Shannon Popkin. How can you make sure you have a well-spent summer? For today's episode, Stephanie has curated three of her most important not-so-secret secrets for a successful summer in particular, and a successful life in general: - Read your Bible to grow closer to the Lord and develop intimacy with Him; - Don't compare to others, but seek to serve them in humility; - Take time to rest, worship, and laugh. For each of these, Stephanie welcomes a dear friend to highlight each element today. So you're getting THREE conversations in this one episode! It is our special Summer gift to you, our beloved audience. First Stephanie welcomes Shadia Hrichi who shares with us her own journey towards deep intimacy with God. They discuss Hagar, a very special woman in the Bible who gets to give God one of His names - "the God who sees me." They also mostly focus on Tamar, whose powerful story of brokenness is redeemed by the only One who is able to deliver us from our bondage, fear, and trials. Do you need to be reminded that God is FOR you? You are not alone, and He is in every detail of your life. He is especially attentive when things are not going as you want them to - which is probably the case for most of us right now, in this season of the world when everything seems upside down and when it might feel that God is distant! He is closer than ever to the brokenhearted. Then Stephanie welcomes Shannon Popkin who reminds us that we are all attacked by the very real enemy of our soul who seeks to distract us from the Lord. Using the same old tricks that have worked for thousands of years, the devil seeks to entice us to compare to one another because that is exactly what he did with God - he wanted to be better than God Himself. We live in a culture that tells us that, unless we are number one, we are worthless. This is deeply damaging to the very fabric of our soul. With her book "Comparison Girl", Shannon reminds us that the cure towards wholesome healing is simple - yet not easy: we are never happier than when we take our eyes off of ourselves, and focus on another. Humility and other-centered service is the simple yet overlooked secret to a fulfilling life. Jesus role-modeled it for us, and invites us to step closer to His heart through selfless humility. How simple, yet how profound! Finally, Stephanie is thrilled to welcome Marci Seither who invites you to join her for a summer of pondering the goodness of God through rest, laughter and meditation. In her new devotional, Lakeside Retreat, Marci beckons us to experience God in the daily, to embrace Him in the simple, and to delight in Him in every moment. Her book is the perfect summer getaway to come back refreshed, renewed, and more in love with God than ever. MEET MARCI SEITHER Marci Seither's writing career began after her humor article was published in a small-town newspaper. Since then she has authored two books and hundreds of articles for local papers, as well as for Guideposts, Light & Life, and Focus on the Family. She is a creative storyteller who has shared her love of stories with hundreds of schoolchildren as well as those attending one of her workshops. Besides writing, she enjoys trying new recipes, food photography, and capturing drone footage. Her biggest joy, besides being married to John for more than three and a half decades and raising six kids, is being grandma to six of the cutest kiddos in this hemisphere. Marci makes her home in the Nashville, Tennessee, area with John and their very spoiled miniature schnauzer—Pepper. website: http://marciseither.com/ Social Media: https://www.facebook.com/marci.seither  Instagram @marci_seither MEET SHANNON POPKIN Shannon Popkin is a writer, speaker, and Bible teacher who loves to blend her gifts for storytelling and humor with her passion for Jesus.
