Scrooged (1988) is an American Christmas fantasy black comedy directed by Richard Donner and written by Mitch Glazer and Michael O'Donoghue. Inspired by Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, it offers a metafictional modern retelling starring Bill Murray as Frank Cross, a cynical TV executive preparing a live broadcast of A Christmas Carol who is visited by ghosts on Christmas Eve. The supporting cast includes Karen Allen, John Forsythe, Bobcat Goldthwait, Carol Kane, Robert Mitchum, Michael J. Pollard, and Alfre Woodard.Produced on a $32 million budget and filmed in New York City and Hollywood from December 1987 to March 1988, the film marked Murray's return after a four-year hiatus following Ghostbusters. Production was turbulent due to creative clashes between Murray and Donner, though the film featured numerous celebrity cameos, including Murray's brothers. Marketed heavily around Murray's ghost-themed persona, Scrooged was released November 23, 1988, grossed over $100 million worldwide, and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup. Though critics were mixed, it has since become a Christmastime staple and is often cited as an unconventional or ahead-of-its-time holiday classic.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Scrooged, a modern 80s retelling of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" stars Bill Murray as a cynical, mean-spirited TV executive who finally learns the true meaning of Christmas, but its production was marred with difficulties. After a four-year hiatus following the overwhelming success of Ghostbusters, Bill Murray returned to acting for this passion project. But before signing on, Murray literally tore apart the original script with screenwriters Mitch Glazer and Michael O'Donoghue to completely rework it, particularly the romantic subplot and family scenes. What followed was one of Hollywood's most notorious productions. Director Richard Donner and Murray clashed constantly throughout the three-month shoot in New York City and Hollywood. Murray felt Donner rushed through takes and kept pushing him to perform louder and broader, while Donner struggled with Murray's improvisational style. The $32 million production took a physical toll as well. Murray worked on dusty, smoky sets filled with fake snow that made him cough up blood. Co-star Carol Kane accidentally split his lip so badly during a scene that filming had to stop for several days. Co-writer O'Donoghue was equally miserable, claiming less than half the original script survived. The film's iconic ending speech was almost entirely improvised by Murray, who went off-script and received a spontaneous ovation from the crew. O'Donoghue was less than impressed, but the moment became one of cinema's most memorable holiday monologues. Scrooged adds layers of comedy and modern critique to Dickens' original text, showcasing not just the spirit of Christmas but a satirical look at the entertainment industry, and the commercialization of Christmas. The Not Ready for Prime Time Podcast: The Early Years of SNL

We continue to celebrate the holiday season by looking back at a movie that is a must watch this time of year – Scrooged!Bill Murray returns to acting after a four-year hiatus to star in this modern retelling of Charles Dickens' immortal classic, "A Christmas Carol," that's infused with the chaotic energy of the live television and Saturday Night Live. Though originally panned by critics – as well as Murray and others involved in making the film – it has endured as one of the modern Christmas classics. The script, written by SNL's Michael O'Donoghue and Mitch Glazer, famously got reworked during the filming but the final product has stood the test of time.  Murray delivers a layered performance, the supporting cast is stellar, and the blend of dark humor and heart hits just right. If you haven't already, do yourself a favor and (re)watch this movie today!---------------------------------Subscribe today! Hardly the funniest, but it works”  - Types - rottentomatoes.com "A BAD MOMS CHRISTMAS is filled with funny, crowd-pleasing comical vignettes. Some of them are relatively clean and fun, but many of them contain at least some, and often plenty of, lewd, outrageous content. For example, there are two very suggestive dance scenes featuring a professional male dancer. Also, despite some surprisingly heartfelt moments revolving around the joys of family Christmas gatherings, the movie's obscene, crude language and lewd situations overwhelm its good intentions and positive Christmas elements. So, MOVIEGUIDE® deems A BAD MOMS CHRISTMAS unacceptable for media-wise moviegoers and their families."  - Proselytizes movieguide.org “Frank hallucinates that a waiter catches on fire from a baked alaska.”  - Warns Roflpuff098 - doesthedogdie.com Get inspired by our  Top Ten time travel movie lists Check out @time_pop_pod on Instagram, Twitter, & TikTok Please Like, Subscribe, and tell a friend about Time Pop. This week we are getting festive with the spooks and talking Scrooged. Murray worked with Glazer and O'Donoghue on reworking the script before agreeing to join the project. The production was tumultuous, as Murray and Donner had different visions for the film. Murray described his time on the film as "misery", while Donner called Murray "superbly creative but occasionally difficult". Along with Murray's three brothers, Brian, John, and Joel, Scrooged features numerous celebrity cameos. The film's marketing capitalized on Murray's Ghostbusters role, referencing his encounters with ghosts in both films. Scrooged was released on November 23, 1988, and grossed over $100 million worldwide. The film received a positive response from test audiences, but was met with a mixed response upon its release from critics who found the film too mean spirited or too sentimental. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Makeup, but lost to the fantasy-comedy film Beetlejuice. In the years since its release, Scrooged has become a regular television Christmastime feature, with some critics calling it an alternative to traditional Christmas films, and others arguing that Scrooged was ahead of its time, making it relevant in the modern day. Emotional connections are reshaped, and the music of Patrick Neil Doyle helps tell this unusual story. Today I had the chance to speak with Kelly Lynch about her role in KEPLER'S DREAM. We also discuss the documentary film THE OILER HOUSE, the architecture of John Lautner and Richard Neutra, how an early trauma propelled Kelly into her acting career, MAGIC CITY, MR. MERCEDES, THE JACKET, DRUGSTORE COWBOY, and of course how Mitch Glazer is more of a ladies man than Warren Beaty. It was an absolute pleasure to chat with Kelly, her film KEPLER'S DREAM will be in theatres December 1st.

FilmReview.com host and BFCA critic, Marc Eastman, and co-host extraordinaire, Shane Leonard, review Bill Murray's latest, Rock the Kasbah. The film looks custom-made for Bill Murray just by watching a few seconds of the trailer (and it is), but it also doesn't exactly look like something solidly comedic, or dramatic, so what Bill Murray do we get exactly? Barry Levinson isn't quite the name he once was, which makes it more difficult to predict what sort of film this will be, and writer Mitch Glazer doesn't help that much. We'll let you know if this one is worth the trip to the theater. We'll also give you a rundown of the week's news, answer listener questions, and more.
