60 years ago the Labour Party won the UK General Election, booting the Conservatives out of office after thirteen years. It is not known if Harold Wilson listened to the LP 'How To Win An Election (Or Not Lose By Much)' but even if he had it is highly unlikely he would have found it instructive. Leslie Bricusse brought together Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe to record this album one afternoon in early 1964 after a lunch in which vast quantities of wine had been dispatched. Peter Sellers recorded his parts a number of weeks later and very soon after technically died (he did, however, recover). This week Brett Tremble - @agnes_guano on Twitter - joins Tyler to tell the tale behind the making of the LP. The conversation includes predictions about the forthcoming General Election and as such could leave them with red faces should opinion polls turn out to be wrong! ******** Sign up for Goon Pod Film Club here: www.patreon.com/GoonPod - first episode on Kind Hearts & Coronets out Saturday 6th July! **********

Hey all. This episode was recorded by Doug and myself Tuesday, January 23rd, and I was just finishing the editing and about to distribute it on the morning of Thursday the 25th. This was as the Wall Street Journal and the Affidavit were coming out about Vince McMahon. Together, Doug and I decided to hold off on releasing the episode until Saturday, as it didn't feel right.  That being said, the episode itself is still in its initial edit, and without any knowledge of the civil lawsuit against McMahon, John Laurenitis, and the WWE, we make references to all of them in a similar context to that of the lawsuit. Our intention is not to make light of what the victim went through. In fact, we wholeheartedly comend and support the victim in this case, and any case similar to this, for being strong, and bringing true attention to the heinous acts of deplorable people and institutions. I speak for myself and the podcast that everyone involved, or were complicit in what happened to Ms. Grant, and the numerous other victims of the McMahons and the WWE, in saying that they should rot in whatever speakable form of hell one can believe in. Anyone who comes to the defense of these demons shall also face similar castigation. If you want to skip this episode that is completely understandable, as we will have another one out later. The RSA gang is back with an extra podcast this week! This time the gang visits one of the most classic movies of all time, and one of Gene Wilder's best films, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory! A sweet boy from a poor family dreams of finding one of five golden tickets hidden inside chocolate bar wrappers which will admit him to the eccentric and reclusive Willy Wonka's magical factory. One after another, tickets are discovered by ghastly children - but will the lad find the last remaining one and have all his dreams come true? Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory is a 1971 American musical fantasy film directed by Mel Stuart from a screenplay by Roald Dahl, based on his 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It stars Gene Wilder as candymaker Willy Wonka. The film tells the story of a poor child named Charlie Bucket (Peter Ostrum) who, upon finding a Golden Ticket in a chocolate bar, wins the chance to visit Willy Wonka's chocolate factory along with four other children from around the world. Filming took place in Munich from August to November 1970. Dahl was credited with writing the film's screenplay; however, David Seltzer was brought in to do an uncredited rewrite. Against Dahl's wishes, changes were made to the story, and other decisions made by the director led Dahl to disown the film. The musical numbers were written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley while Walter Scharf arranged and conducted the orchestral score. Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory was released in the United States on June 30, 1971, by Paramount Pictures. With a budget of $3 million, the film received generally positive reviews from critics, but was not a big financial success, only earning $4 million by the end of its original run. It received a nomination for Best Original Score at the 44th Academy Awards and Wilder was nominated for Best Performance in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical at the 29th Golden Globe Awards. The film also introduced the song "The Candy Man", which went on to be recorded by Sammy Davis Jr. and become a popular hit. Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory has since become highly popular on repeated television airings and home video sales. In 2014, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.

The Legacy of John Williams presents a multi-part podcast special dedicated to HOOK - The Ultimate Edition, a 3-CD set of John Williams' magnificent score for the 1991 film directed by Steven Spielberg, now available from La-La Land Records. Hook – The Ultimate Edition is a 3-CD collection from La-La Land Records with a newly restored and expanded presentation of the magnificent score composed by John Williams for the 1991 film directed by Steven Spielberg. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/corgiov/message

We're starting Season 3 with a bang.  Peter McDade is here to talk about his novel ‘Songs by Honeybird', a story that features a fictional integrated rock band from 1960s Macon, Georgia, that fell off the musical map after a fire killed the lead singer and guitarist and also . . . possibly, the band's African American drummer. To put it more succinctly, ‘Songs by Honeybird' is about a band, a romantic break-up, a Ph.D candidate in History's research, secrets, fathers, racism, Atlanta, the sixties and the repercussions the South still feels from that period, and . . . a talking dog. In the last segment of the episode Alan Light joins me to talk about musician, civil rights activist, and my fellow native-North Carolinian Nina Simone. The reason I've roped Alan into popping in is because one of the two main characters in ‘Songs by Honeybird', the piano-playing Nina, is named after the legendary artist. Alan is a rock critic, journalist, former editor-in-chief of ‘Spin' and ‘Vibe' magazines, a former senior writer at ‘Rolling Stone', and author of the book ‘What Happened, Miss Simone?', a biography of Nina Simone inspired by the Academy Award-nominated Netflix documentary of the same title. From ‘60s Southern Rock to Nina Simone's Soul: Peter McDade on His Rock Novel ‘Songs by Honeybird' with Alan Light on His Bio of Nina Simone, ‘What Happened, Miss Simone?'

Competition was tight for the Original Song Oscar for songs released in 1970, as six of the 11 Oscar nominees had already won at least one Oscar. The five songs weren't immensely popular with the public, but they did provide some intriguing storylines as two members of a moderately popular rock and roll band wrote a conventional love ballad and used pseudonyms in case the song was a flop. Henry Mancini found himself writing his first song for Julie Andrews, and Leslie Bricusse was gunning for another Oscar with another song from a British musical. Find out which one wins on The Best Song Podcast!

Fifty Key Stage Musicals: The Podcast

WICKED COMPOSER: Stephen Schwartz LYRICIST: Stephen Schwartz BOOK: Winnie Holzman SOURCE: Gregory Maguire's book Wicked: The Life and Times of The Wicked Witch of The West (1995) DIRECTOR: Joe Mantello CHOREOGRAPHER: Wayne Cilento PRINCIPLE CAST: Norbert Leo Butz (Fiyero), Kristin Chenoweth (Glinda), Idina Menzel (Elphaba),  OPENING DATE: Oct 30, 2003 CLOSING DATE: Still running as of this publication PERFORMANCES: +6000 SYNOPSIS:  Elphaba is a guarded young lady who is inflicted with green skin. Her roommate Glinda is an outgoing, popular student. Together, they navigate life at Oz's Shiz University. Their rocky partnership is made even more tumultuous when they discover they are both in love with Fiyero, a fellow classmate.  Though its tryouts and opening were met with mixed reviews, Wicked has maintained international popularity. Beginning with composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz's first encounter with Gregory Maguire's book, Wicked's path to Broadway included some of the American theatre industry's most notable talents, including Kristin Chenoweth, Idina Menzel, Joe Mantello, and Wayne Cilento. Lauren Haughton makes the argument that the inclusion of screenwriter Winnie Holzman as the librettist for Wicked allowed the show to examine the relationships of adolescent girls in a uniquely authentic way, positing the musical as a pioneering exploration of feminine friendship. The musical's employment and subversion of standard musical theatre conventions is outlined through a feminist lens and broad ideologies of mainstream feminist movements are applied to the show's storyline. Winnie Holzman is an American dramatist, screenwriter, and poet. She is known for having created the ABC television series My So Called Life which led to a nomination for a scriptwriting Emmy Award in 1995, as well as her work writing for thirtysomething and Once and Again Holzman has garnered fame for her work on Broadway, most notably for co-writing the smash stage musical Wicked. Lauren Haughton Gillis is currently an Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre at Indiana University. She has served on faculty at Northwestern University and San Diego State University. As a director/choreographer she recently finished a fellowship at the La Jolla Playhouse on their production of Fly. Earlier this season she choreographed She Loves Me at San Diego Musical Theatre, was the associate director on Jesca Prudencio's PDA at the La Jolla Playhouse Without Walls Festival and directed and choreographed the world premiere of The Magic Hummingbird. As a performer, Lauren appeared on Broadway in Wicked, at the Goodman Theatre in Turn of the Century (with Tommy Tune), at The Old Globe in Sammy (with Leslie Bricusse), and at Maine State Music Theatre in Hans Christian Anderson (with Maury Yeston) Lauren holds an MFA in Musical Theatre from San Diego State University and a BFA in Musical Theatre from Syracuse University.  SOURCES Wicked, Original Cast Recording, Decca (2003) Wicked: The Grimmerie, a Behind the Scenes Look at the Hit Broadway Musical by David Cote and Joan Marcus, published by Hachette Books (2005) Unnaturally Green: One Girl's Journey Along a Yellow Brick Road Less Traveled by Felicia Ricci, published by Felicia/Ricci (2011) A Little Bit Wicked: Life, Love, and Faith in Stages by Kristin Chenoweth, published by Touchstone (2010) How Wicked Made It to the Stage by Jeri Freedman, published by Cavendish Square Publishing (2018) Wicked: A Musical Biography by Paul R. Soundtrack Producer Mike Matessino remembers the legendary Academy Award-winning composer, lyricist and songwriter who collaborated with John Williams on several projects including Superman, Home Alone and Hook Hosted by Maurizio Caschetto and Tim Burden Composer, lyricist, librettist Leslie Bricusse (1931-2021) is one of the most talented and versatile musicians who worked in movies and musical theatre in the second half of the 20th century. His gift both for melody and catchy lyrics kept his works popular throughout the decades. Bricusse is well known to fans and admirers of John Williams for their collaborations on such pivotal and successful projects as Superman: The Movie (1978), Home Alone (1990) and Steven Spielberg's Hook (1991), but also for the film musical Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1969), for which Williams did a magnificent work of adaptation, arrangement and orchestration of Bricusse's lovely song score. Bricusse passed away suddenly last October at the age 90 and we tribute his memory and his artistic achievements with this podcast episode featuring Soundtrack Producer Mike Matessino, who worked on many restorations of Bricusse's scores (Doctor Dolittle and Goodbye, Mr. Chips, among others) and was also a personal friend, offering an in-depth overview of Leslie's career and his collaborations with John Williams. And so I was doing my masters of arts in law. My parents, their hope I think would've been just like most immigrant parents a lawyer, doctor, engineer. And I tried to... I wasn't trying that hard though to really be a lawyer. I really was hiding in school. My goal was to just keep my head down and stay here as long as possible. Because school is awesome, and if you figured out the path, if you know what to do, you attend, you finish the assignments, you hand them in. You do the reading, you get a mark, everybody's happy. That's something that's very doable, I think if you can just follow the script. But real life outside of school is scary. And the music industry, what's the path?” This interview series follows my curiosity about fellow musicians: how did they get to where they are today, what are their perspectives on a life in music? The format is in-depth conversations prepared with lots of research and many episodes also feature the guests playing music. I speak to musicians playing in different styles of music, different instruments, and with really different careers. In Season One,  I spoke with quite famous soloists like violinists James Ehnes and Kerson Leong, and also with erhu player Patty Chan and  composers Hooshyar Khayam  and Roddy Ellias about creativity, carnatic violinist Subhadra Vijaykumar about the Indianisation of the violin, violinist Alicia Svigals about the Klezmer revival, trumpet player Karen Donnelly about women in the brass world,  and so much more,  with 20 full episodes, and many bonus episodes.  Season 2 has a similar diversity of guests, with many topics covered including personal struggles, the entrepreneurial aspects of the music business, advice on how to practice and how better to tap into creativity.  Please follow and stay notified of all the new episodes!  Photo credit: Phantom Productions --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/leah-roseman/message

Chris & Kelsey dip their toes into the race discussion before immediately admitting that they don't have the expertise required to discuss it with any authority. It's fun! The Classic Film: Candyman: Day of the Dead (1999) "The Candyman is back, trying to convince his descendent, an artist, to join him” (IMDb.com). Candyman 3—following another location change to Los Angeles this time—isn't good, but it isn't as bad as you might think. It's certainly no Farewell to the Flesh. The Modern Film: Candyman (2021) "A sequel to the horror film Candyman (1992) that returns to the now-gentrified Chicago neighborhood where the legend began” (IMDb.com). This new Candyman is an updated take on race relations in America and tries to adapt the Candyman mythos to its modern setting, mostly successfully. It's compelling and beautifully shot if not at all scary. In 2010, Polsat did not play Home Alone, which caused over 90 thousand people to protest on Facebook. In 2016, over 4.44 million Poles tuned in to Polsat to watch Home Alone. Since the 2010's it's TV trailers even include a tagline that acknowledges this popularity: translated from Polish bridge troll it says, "Christmas without him? It's absolutely impossible!" At the 12th Youth in Film Awards, Macaulay Culkin won Best Young Actor Starring in a Motion Picture. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards, one for Best Original Score, which was written by John Williams, and the other for Best Original Song for "Somewhere in My Memory", music by Williams and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse, but lost to Dances with Wolves and Dick Tracy respectively. First time you saw the movie? Plot:The film opens as McCallister family is preparing to spend Christmas in Paris, with the large family gathering at Peter and Kate's home on the night before their departure. The youngest son, Kevin, is the subject of ridicule by his older siblings, as well as the rest of the family. A friendly police officer is also amidst the chaos, checking to make sure everything will be secure if they're traveling during Christmas. Kevin inadvertently ruins the family dinner, like a pube in the macaroni, after his brother taunts him and eats the last piece of cheese pizza. In the scuffle, a drink is knocked over and their tickets to Paris are doused, resulting in Kevin being called a jerk by his uncle, and getting sent to the attic as punishment. On his way up he berates Kate and wishes that his family would disappear. During the night, heavy winds damage the power lines, which causes a power outage and resets the alarm clocks, causing the family to oversleep. In the confusion and rush to get to the airport, Kevin is accidentally left behind. S:-I love the reoccurring theme of the statue getting hit-I've yet to have my daughter have an outburst like this, but I'm not looking forward to it.-I remember as a kid, identifying with Kevin, being picked on and so on; as an adult I see where he's kinda being a little shit too. But all the kids could use some better parenting.-Wouldn't it be really weird for a cop to go door to door asking about Christmas security?-The novelization of the movie explains the question of what does Kevins parents do: Dad is a "successful businessman" and mom is a fashion designer, which also helps explain why they had all the mannequins.  Kevin wakes to find the house empty and, thinking that his wish has come true, is overjoyed with his newfound freedom. Que a musical montage of doing all the things he wanted to do without his family around, and calls out thinking it may be a prank. He soon becomes frightened by his next door neighbor, Old Man Marley, who is rumored to be a serial killer who murdered his own family, as well as Harry and Marv, the so called "Wet Bandits," which is what Chris called his moonshine operation during prohibition. No, the "wet bandits" are a pair of burglars who have been breaking into other vacant houses in the neighborhood and have targeted the McCallisters' house. Kevin tricks them into thinking that his family is still home by throwing a fake Christmas party with mannequins tied up and made to look like they're moving, forcing them to put their plans on hold. S:-I can't remember if there was someone like "old man marley" where I came from... Do any of y'all have any urban legends from where you're from?-The whole thing with him doing what he wanted when the family is gone, every kids dream.-I also call bullshit on how clean the house is after the chaos of what happened that morning. Also, you'd think, even in the attic, Kevin would've heard everyone rushing around, or one of the kids would've said something about not seeing Kevin.-This whole movie would be over if Kevin just went to a neighbor who was home. How improbable is it that a WHOLE street of families are ALL out of town around Christmas?  Kate realizes mid-flight that Kevin was left behind, and upon arrival in Paris, the family discovers that all flights for the next two days are booked. Peter and the rest of the family stay in his brother's apartment in Paris, while Kate manages to get a flight back to the United States in Dallas, Texas, but only gets as far as Scranton, Pennsylvania. She attempts to book a flight to Chicago, but again, everything is booked. Unable to accept this, Kate is overheard by Gus Polinski, the lead member of a traveling polka band, who offers to let her travel with them to Chicago on their way to Milwaukee in a moving van, which she gratefully accepts. Kevin goes shopping, and inadvertently steals a toothbrush when Old Man Marley appears beside him. Meanwhile, Harry and Marv finally realize that Kevin is home alone, and on Christmas Eve, Kevin overhears them discussing plans to break into his house that night. Kevin starts to miss his family and asks the local Santa Claus impersonator if he could bring his family back for Christmas. He goes to church and watches a choir perform, then meets Old Man Marley, who dispels the rumors about him. He points out his granddaughter in the choir, whom he never gets to meet, as he and his son are estranged; Kevin suggests that he should reconcile with his son.
S:-I realized watching this time, this whole thing only takes place over 3 days. Travel day, and the subsequent two days, and only 2 nights.-John Candy was so good in this as the Polka King... Wish he were still here.-Marley knows that kids say this random, horrible shit about him, and he does nothing about it? Weird. Also, I get the youthful innocence how Kevin is trying to help Marley, but it comes across a bit snarky/snide  Kevin returns home and rigs the house with booby traps to take on the burglars. Harry and Marv attempt to break in, but Kevin begins the moving mediation on pain, some arguing that it is an expose on mind over matter, and starts by shooting Harry in the nuts with a pellet gun. Marv puts his head through the doggy door to check, and catches a BB to the head. Harry then goes around front and slips on the icy stairs. As Marv does the same down the back stairs. Marv enters, and when he attempts to turn on a light, is hit in the face with an iron. As Harry makes it up the icy stairs, he grabs the red hot door handle and burns an M into his hand. We cut back to Marv, going up tar covered stairs, when his barefoot steps on a nail, and he tumbles backwards down the stairs. Harry, around at the back door again, carefully opens it, triggering a blow torch that sets his head on fire. Marv limps out of the basement, only to slip on the ice again. Harry, angry, kicks the door open and pursues Kevin into the dining room, and into some plastic wrap coated with glue, when he trips a fan that blows feathers on him. Marv, sneaking in through an open window, steps on glass oraments with his bare feet. They meet, and pursue Kevin to the main stair case, where they slip and fall on micro machines. They start to pursue Kevin up the stiars, when the flings tied up paint cans over the railing, first nailing Marv and sending him flying, then Harry. Kevin calls 911 and as they get to the top of the stairs, they're tripped by a wire, but Marv leaps and grabs Kevins leg, but Kevin sees Buzz's escaped tarantula, and puts it on Marvs face, which causes a well deserved scream. Marv throw the spider on to Harry, and then beats him with his crow bar, trying to kill the spider. Meanwhile, Kevin escapes via a rope from the attic to his tree house; when Harry and Marv follow, he cuts the rope, sending them flying into the side of the house. He then lures Harry and Marv into a neighboring home which they previously broke into. They ambush him and prepare to get their revenge, but Marley intervenes and knocks them unconscious with his snow shovel. The police arrive and arrest Harry and Marv, having identified all the houses that they broke into due to Marv's destructive characteristic of flooding them. S:-EVERY KID wants to do this to their house. I remember after this movie, I was so paranoid of burglars in our house, I slept in the hallway and had "bobby traps" set up if I heard anyone.-The different levels of severity in the booby traps is puzzling. From shooting with a pellet gun, to the door knob, and flame thrower, to the glue and feathers? Also, the ornaments wouldn't have been bad if Marv still had shoes on.-Which is the most painful booby trap?  On Christmas Day, Kevin is disappointed to find that his family is still gone. He then hears Kate enter the house and call for him; they reconcile and are soon joined by Peter, Buzz, Jeff, Megan, and Linnie, who waited in Paris until they could obtain a direct flight to Chicago. Kevin keeps silent about his encounter with Harry and Marv, although Peter finds Harry's knocked-out gold tooth. Kevin then observes Marley reuniting with his son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter. Marley notices Kevin, and the pair wave to each other. Fade to black, and credits roll. S:-Biggest issue with this, is how did he clean everything up afterwards? My 8 year old has to be told where to put her crap in her own room.  Top Five Trivia of the movie: 5: John Hughes on developing the concept: "I was going away on vacation, and making a list of everything I didn't want to forget. I thought, 'Well, I'd better not forget my kids.' Then I thought, 'What if I left my 10-year-old son at home? What would he do?'" He imagined that children are naturally most scared of robbers.4: An injury had occurred between Pesci and Culkin during one of the rehearsals for the scene in which Harry tries to bite off Kevin's finger. Culkin still has the scar.3: The McAllister house is located at 671 Lincoln Avenue in the North Shore village of Winnetka (wuh·net·kuh), Illinois, where Hughes's previous films Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Sixteen Candles, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, She's Having a Baby, and Uncle Buck had also been shot2: this film spawned 5 more movies: Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (which the whole cast returned), Home Alone 3, 4, Home Alone: The Holiday Heist in 2012, and Home Sweet Home Alone in 2021.1: Joe Pesci purposely ignored Macaulay Culkin so he would think he was mean. He wanted Macaulay to be scared of him to get the best reaction from him while filming, which Caulkin said worked. BONUS TRIVIA: The McAllister house, built in 1920 and owned by the Abendshien (A-ben-sign) family until in 2012, when it was listed for $2.4M and sold for $1.585 million. Its 4,200 square feet of living space. The house has five bedrooms, including a four-room master suite, and three-and-a-half bathrooms. ALSO, in 2021, the owners recreated the Home Alone vibe and allowed Airbnb to book the house, for 4 guests for only $25 a night, and the actor who played Buzz welcomed the guests to the house. Source: https://www.fancypantshomes.com/movie-homes/the-real-life-home-alone-house-then-and-now/ TOP 5Stephen:1 Breakfast club2 T23 Sandlot4 Back to the Future5 Mail order brides Chris:1. sandlots2.
