The Lincoln Center revival of Ragtime — with music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and a book by Terrence McNally, adapted from the novel by E. L. Doctorow — has just garnered 11 Tony Award nominations, including Best Revival of a Musical, along with multiple acting nods for its acclaimed cast. This new production feels more timely and resonant than the one that first played on Broadway in 1998. In addition to the fictional Coalhouse Walker Jr. and the archetypal figures known simply as Father, Mother, and Younger Brother, Ragtime brings to life several real celebrities and power brokers from turn-of-the-century New York. Anna Grace Barlow, who portrays Broadway sensation Evelyn Nesbit, and Rodd Cyrus, who embodies legendary illusionist Harry Houdini, join Carl Raymond from The Gilded Gentleman podcast for a behind-the-scenes conversation about their characters and their experiences bringing this revival to the stage. This show is brought to you by The Gilded Gentleman podcast, produced by the Bowery Boys and edited and produced by Kieran Gannon. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Lynn Ahrens is an Academy Award, Golden Globe and Tony nominated lyricist for her work on ANASTASIA, both the original 1997 Twentieth Century Fox's animated film and musical stage adaption and US Associate Director Sarah Hartmann were both in Sydney, the Lyric Theatre for the opening of the Australia premiere of ANASTASIA [Crossroads Live Australia]. What an honour! I was thrilled to be able to speak to them and ask questions about both the film and musical- the historical context, staging, research and more! This was so special, I definitely could've asked more, so I hope you enjoy this exclusive treat! An award-winning lyricist and writer for film, TV, and musical theatre, Lynn Ahrens has collaborated with composer Stephen Flaherty on a slew of popular musicals, including Anastasia for both film and stage, Ragtime, Once on this Island, Seussical, A Man of No Importance, and many others. She's been nominated for two Academy Awards, two Golden Globes and won the Tony for Best Original Score for Ragtime. In this wide-ranging conversation, Lynn reflects on the remarkable journey that took her from a secretary with a guitar to one of musical theatre's most celebrated lyricists. She speaks candidly about the role of luck alongside persistence, from her breakthrough writing for Schoolhouse Rock! to the formative partnership with Stephen Flaherty that began with a chance call across a New York street. Along the way, she shares insights into craft, from the challenge of writing opening numbers to the necessity of constant rewriting, as well as formative encounters with legends like Stephen Sondheim, Comden and Green, and Sheldon Harnick. The conversation also explores the evolution of Anastasia from animated film to stage musical, shaped by a desire to deepen its emotional and historical resonance, and the ongoing life of works like Ragtime, whose themes continue to echo powerfully in today's world. Lynn speaks warmly about mentoring the next generation of writers, the realities of collaboration, and the emotional highs and lows of developing new work.Anastasia, music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, is playing at the Sydney Lyric Theatre, currently booking until July 18, before heading to Adelaide and then Brisbane.

Ron Faber (left) and Stephen Stout (right) in Lucky Stiff. Photo by Peter Cunningham. This episode of Settling Scores dives into the delightfully offbeat world of Lucky Stiff, the cult-favorite musical that helped launch the legendary songwriting team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. With its rapid-fire wit, breakneck(!) farce, and charming score, Lucky Stiff showcases the early sparks of a musical theatre partnership that would go on to create Ragtime, Once on This Island, and Anastasia. We'll attempt to outline the show's wild plot and swoon over some lovely musical moments, all while tracing how Ahrens and Flaherty's unique voice first took shape. Along the way, we unpack behind-the-scenes stories, creative risks, and why this small, zany musical still punches far above its weight. Call it a love letter to joyful absurdity. The new revival of the musical Ragtime, by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens (book by Terrence McNally, based on the novel by E.L. Doctorow), is one of the big hits of the new Broadway season. Lincoln Center Theater has produced the latest rendition, and times have certainly changed since the musical's original Broadway production in 1998. The new revival makes the show's characters and issues even more relevant for our present day. Along with the fictional character Coalhouse Walker Jr. and the archetypal characters Father, Mother, and Younger Brother, the show features several celebrities and power players from turn-of-the-century New York. Anna Grace Barlow, who plays Broadway star Evelyn Nesbit, and Rodd Cyrus, who stars as iconic illusionist Harry Houdini, join The Gilded Gentleman for a behind-the-scenes talk about their characters and their experiences performing in the show. In this episode of Half Hour, Jeff and Richie take a close look at the 2025 Broadway revival of Ragtime at Lincoln Center Theater's Vivian Beaumont Theater, with Joshua Henry, Caissie Levy, Brandon Uranowitz, and Colin Donnell leading the cast. They compare Lear deBessonet's Broadway staging to the earlier New York City Center presentation, weighing the strength of the performances, the impact of a more pared-back production, and how the material lands with today's audiences. The conversation covers the score by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, Terrence McNally's book, design choices that support or undercut the storytelling, and what this revival might mean for the upcoming Tony Awards. Jeff and Richie also discuss how Ragtime's mix of fictional and historical figures speaks to contemporary questions about race, class, immigration, and the American dream. In honor of Pride Month, we hear a 2004 interview with the late Terrence McNally, four time Tony Award winner, who frequently focused on the gay experience in his work. This podcast, unedited from its original posting, was first heard on April1, 2020. Terrence McNally, who died of complications from COVID on March 24, 2020 at the age of 81, was a giant of the American theatre. He received tony awards for his plays Love Valour Compassion and Master Class, and for best book for a musical for Kiss of the Spider Woman and Ragtime. His plays, musicals and operas have been performed around the world. Among his other plays were Lisbon Traviata, Lips Together Teeth Apart, The Ritz, and Frankie and Johnnie in the Claire de Lune. His plays, rich with humor and deft characterization, also were political in nature, and he never shied away and he was always willing to take a stand especially in the area of gay rights and the necessity for community. Richard Wolinsky spoke with Terrence McNally on March 18, 2004 in the offices of New Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco, which was then running the musical, A Man of No Importance, for which he had written the book. The music and lyrics were by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, who he had previously collaborated with on Ragtime. He was in San Francisco as New Conservatory's playwright in residence that spring, working on a play that would eventually become Some Men, a look at gay mens lives over the course of several decades. Terrence McNally's play Some Men played off Broadway in 2007 and would return to its theatre of origin, New Conservatory in San Francisco, in 2009. Over the fifteen years after the interview, he would write several plays that reached Broadway, including It's Only a Play and Mothers and Sons, along with three musicals, the last being Anastasia, based on the animated film, which ran on Broadway for two years, closing in spring, 2019 after 808 performances. "Ragtime: The Musical," with music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and a book by Terrence McNally, is based on the 1975 novel of the same name by E.L. Doctorow. It's two-and-a-half hours of intense beauty and heartbreaking grief, and frankly, all three of us choked up a little while recording this episode. The (incredibly intricate) plot follows the intersecting lives of three groups in the early 20th century: African Americans, upper-class white suburbanites, and Eastern European immigrants. Set against the backdrop of New York City, the story delves into themes of racial tension, social upheaval, and the pursuit of the American Dream, weaving vibrant, moving music with compelling narratives. The characters navigate love, loss, racism, feminism, and the evolving landscape of a dysfunctional nation in flux, all while singing some of the most gorgeous lyrics and music that ever flowed from Ahrens and Flaherty's pens. (And somehow we managed to squeeze in a tribute to the amazing Marin Mazzie, too!) So get yer hanky ready -- it's time to dust off this musical gem and explore the masterpiece that is "Ragtime: The Musical." *We'd love to hear from you! Actor and professor Cindy Gold remembers her friend and colleague Frank Galati, the Academy Award-nominated and multiple Tony Award-winning writer and director who died last January. At a memorial held at Steppenwolf Theatre last Monday, Galati's friends and artistic colleagues (including Mary Zimmerman, Robert Falls; Lois Smith, and Lynn Ahrens & Stephen Flaherty) remembered him as a generous and supportive artist in an event that was an inspiring celebration. Cindy shares her memories of working with Frank on his musical Loving Repeating (for which she won a Joseph Jefferson Award for playing Gertrude Stein); how Frank was a champion of the positive who had the ability to love an actor to a great performance; the joy of experiencing the “full Galati;” her talent to be a muse; and how Frank Galati continues to inspire. Schoolhouse Rock turned 50 years old this year. KEXP's Eva Walker caught up with one of the songwriters and performers of the program, Lynn Ahrens, to talk about the music of the show and the show's legacy. “The original premise of Schoolhouse Rock, the president of that agency, a guy named David B. McCall had five kids and they could not remember their times tables but they could remember the lyrics to songs all the time and it was his brainchild to marry education with pop music and that's how the whole series was born,” Ahrens says. So, why not bring them on to introduce the episode. Mary, from "True Crime in Academia," joins Andrew to deep dive the murder of Stanford White with author Simon Baatz. Simon wrote The Girl on the Velvet Swing: Sex, Murder, and Madness at the Dawn of the Twentieth Century (2018). A few hard hitting questions that Simon helps us answer include: Why did Harry Thaw murder Stanford White? What led Evelyn to the vaudeville stage? Why do so many erroneously think that Evelyn had a love affair with Stanford White? Simon explains why Evelyn's story is so relevant in our current moment and why Stanford White's predatory behavior connects to the #MeToo movement. Simon gives his opinion on how Evelyn, Harry, and Stanford have been represented in pop culture, including Ragtime (the novel and musical), The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing, and the new Gilded Age TV series. And yes, Part 2 of our Gilded Age recap will be coming out on Friday and features a conversation about Stanford White (filmed at a Gilded Age mansion)!
