Today, we're delving into the eerie and thought-provoking world of Flatliners (1990), a film that combines psychological thriller and sci-fi elements with a dash of supernatural intrigue. Directed by Joel Schumacher, this movie explores the consequences of toying with life and death through an ambitious group of medical students.Flatliners features an ensemble cast including Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, William Baldwin, Oliver Platt, and Kevin Bacon as medical students who embark on a risky experiment to discover what lies beyond death. They take turns inducing clinical death, experiencing the afterlife for a few minutes before being resuscitated. What starts as a scientific inquiry quickly spirals into a nightmare as their past sins and personal demons begin to haunt them in the real world. The plot thickens as each student experiences death and returns with not only vivid memories but also haunting repercussions. These experiences range from spiritually enlightening to terrifyingly disturbing, affecting each individual differently. As they push the boundaries of their experiments further, the consequences become increasingly severe, forcing them to confront unresolved issues and moral questions about life and death.Flatliners explores profound themes such as the ethical limits of scientific exploration and the idea of redemption. It questions the arrogance of human endeavors to conquer death and highlights the inescapable nature of past transgressions. The characters' confrontations with their personal ghosts serve as a metaphor for facing one's actions and seeking forgiveness.A Dad's Take For a movie night with older kids or teens, particularly those interested in the melding of science and existential questions, Flatliners offers a lot to unpack. It's a film that encourages viewers to think about deep and sometimes uncomfortable questions regarding life, death, and the afterlife. So, join us as we dive into the chilling yet fascinating world of Flatliners, examining how far one can go in the pursuit of knowledge before they've gone too far. Whether you're revisiting this classic or experiencing its thrills for the first time, there's plenty to discover and discuss.

The Film Flamers: A Horror Movie Podcast

Backdraft is a 1991 American film that's part crime thriller, part family drama, part love story, part bildungsroman, and part macho bullshit directed by Ron Howard and written by Gregory Widen. The stacked cast features Kurt Russell, William Baldwin, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Scott Glenn, Rebecca De Mornay, Robert De Niro, J. T. Walsh, and the late great Donald Sutherland. The film is about two estranged firefighter brothers who dodge flaming buildings and family therapy alike while unraveling an arson conspiracy hotter than their sibling rivalry. A podcast investigates CA State Prison, Sacramento - formerly called New Folsom. Also, a Placer County production company makes a film on homelessness starring Billy Baldwin. Finally, the nation's first Black woman cartoonist in the mainstream press. Podcast Investigates CA State Prison in Sac The second season of KQED's investigative podcast On Our Watch debuted this week, focusing on the deaths of two correctional officers at California State Prison, Sacramento - formerly called New Folsom - who reported misconduct, corruption, and abuse by fellow officers. KQED Criminal Justice Reporters Sukey Lewis and Julie Small join Insight to talk about what their investigation uncovered within the walls of “New Folsom,” and the barriers and challenges officers faced when trying to report wrongdoing. The California Dept. of Corrections and Rehabilitation released the following statement in response to the podcast: CDCR takes every allegation of employee misconduct very seriously and has restructured its process to ensure complaints are properly, fairly and thoroughly reviewed. In January 2022, CDCR implemented emergency regulations to improve the investigations process on staff misconduct allegations, and the department received funding in the 2022-23 state budget to support these continued efforts. A system of fixed and body-worn cameras is in place. In September 2022, CDCR announced changes to employee discipline for misconduct directed at incarcerated people, parolees, other employees, or members of the public. CDCR continues to work with outside law enforcement agencies on this case and cannot comment on many specific questions raised by reporters for this story. Placer County Movie on Homelessness There's a lot of movie buzz in Sacramento these days and one of the films that's getting attention is called No Address, starring William Baldwin. The feature movie, along with an accompanying documentary, will tell the story of the homelessness crisis and how so many Americans are one paycheck, one job loss, or one medical emergency away from ending up on the streets. Actor William “Billy” Baldwin, along with Jennifer Stolo, CEO of Placer County-based Robert Craig Films, join us to talk about the movie and why they believe the story of homelessness is an important topic to tackle, especially in light of the situation here in California. ‘STILL: Racism in America, A Retrospective in Cartoons' It's a special bond when a parent and child share a common passion. But one father and daughter took it to a whole other level, pioneering their own groundbreaking paths as Black cartoonists in the mainstream press. And their decades-long work is now on display, with a message that still resonates today. Cartoonist Barbara Brandon-Croft and curator Tara Nakashima Donahue, discuss their new installation at the UC Davis Design Museum “STILL: Racism in America, A Retrospective in Cartoons," which explores racism through cartoons by Brandon-Croft and her late father Brumsic Brandon, Jr. The exhibit runs through April 21.

To paraphrase Nelson Wright's first line in the movie, today is a good day to talk about "Flatliners." This beautiful and bizarre 1990 film directed by Joel Schumacher captivated Sarah and Raf as young adults, and they have a lot to say about it. But does it hold up like the museum's giant sculptures...or more like the leaking ceiling?Stylish and moody, "Flatliners" is the story of five ridiculously good-looking medical students who take turns stopping their hearts to experience the afterlife. They perform their deadly hobby in secret, surrounded by dramatic sculptures and murals of Greek gods in a museum undergoing renovations. So, yeah, it's not exactly realistic. According to Sarah, "It is absolutely gorgeous, and it makes absolutely zero sense." But -- at least to our hosts -- this movie doesn't need to make sense to be enjoyed. Its striking symbolism and what Raf dubs "tasteful excess" still look stunning, especially in the recent 4K transfer. "I recognize its flaws," Sarah admits (and the film does have a lot of flaws, like cultural appropriation and misogyny), "but I also love what works about it." Raf notes, "It is one of the front-line members of the goth army," following on the heels of 80s horror classic and fellow Kiefer Sutherland vehicle "The Lost Boys."With Spooky Season just around the corner (or already here, according to our hosts), now's the time to grab your giant pumpkin mask and consider rewatching "Flatliners." It's not for everyone; but if you're in the mood to see character traits expressed in apartment decor, highly pettable hairstyles, and a lot of eerie-looking steam, you just might enjoy seeing it again. Just please don't celebrate with a bonfire on the museum steps.

How Did They Get There

Alfredo de Villa directs films which layer complex characters onto the backdrop of vibrant emotions; irreverent humor and interweaving narrative themes which take the lead. They carry the weight of strong characters as they brace themselves for the reality they're immersed in after not realizing the fact until someone, or something or their own voice rises to the surface and informs who they really are. His first film, Washington Heights, is a testament to that reality. Alfredo accompanied the juxtaposition of art, comics, familial love and respect with the culturally-diverse eponymous New York City neighborhood which acted as his canvas. The film, which Alfredo co-wrote with Pulitzer prize-winner Junot Diaz, starred Tomas Milian and Manny Perez, and featured Bobby Cannavale and Danny Hoch in supporting roles, and was released at the Tribeca Film Festival where it was acquired by Lionsgate. He next directed the dance-centered Yellow, which featured Roselyn Sanchez, Bill Duke and D.B. Sweeney on which he had mixed experiences; however, it allowed him to finance his third film - the seminal Adrift in Manhattan, which premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival in Dramatic Competition. The film featured riveting performances from Heather Graham, Victor Rasuk and Dominic Chianese alongside Elizabeth Peña, William Baldwin and Marlene Forte. His next film Nothing Like the Holidays, brought him back to his stylistic roots in terms of form and humor, and was made for Overture Films. It featured an ensemble cast helmed by Alfred Molina, Debra Messing, Luis Guzman, Freddie Rodriguez, Jay Hernandez, Melonie Diaz and reunited him with Elizabeth Peña, who played the matriarch of a Chicago, Puerto Rican family in Humboldt Park. Then came the comically-hilarious Fugly, based on John Leguizamo's one-man show, Ghetto Klown, starring Leguizamo opposite Radha Mitchell, Rosie Perez and Griffin Dunne. He is also a prolific commercial director, and graduate of Columbia's MFA program. In our conversation, we discussed his Mexican upbringing; mental health undertones in his work; films which influenced his diverse cinematic palate; and showing his son Pulp Fiction for the first time.Opening Credits: HoliznaCC0 - Sick With Love I CC0 1.0 Universal (CC0 1.0) Public Domain Dedication; Crowander - Sloopy I Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0); Closing Credits: Siddhartha Corsus - The Fire of Your Peace I Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0).

"You go, we go!" - Stephen McCafferty (Kurt Russell) Join our Discord  https://discord.gg/jDrUtNcRq2  And we're back again! This time around on Season 3 we breakdown the '90s films of Kurt Russell (an action star who is both iconic and yet still , we think, oddly underappreciated.) Kicking off the season Scott and Special Guest Caleb Knutson (check out his YouTube Channel Caleb Watches Movies) look at the 1991 Ron Howard *ahem* "classic" "Backdraft."  Ok, ok so we admit this movie is daft as a brush, has way too many subplots and a number of characters who have no right to been there. On saying that, do we think this movie is an enjoyable ride? Hell yeah, we do! Listen as Caleb talks about the special place this film has in his heart and Scott talk about how he assumed he had misremembered from his childhood viewings that fire is presented as a sentient villain (because that is silly right?) and his amusement that he had actually remembered that correctly! Elsewhere in the episode, Caleb and Scott talk about how Donald Sutherland steals the film, how Kurt Russell and William Baldwin actually make really convincing brothers and get into just how wild and woolly the script for this film. Plus, they get into how Ron Howard might be one of the most middle of the road directors in cinematic history, whether or not Scott Glen is actually a vampire and how surprised they were to find out that this movie had a sequel....in 2019!
