This "story of a ship" kicks off the David Lean Directs Noel Coward boxset. Lean was an in-demand film editor (and had previously done some uncredited co-direction), and Noel Coward wanted to make a war propaganda film based on his friend Lord Mountbatten's naval exploits. Thus we get In Which We Serve (1942), a biography of the crew of a doomed destroyer told in flashback after the ship sinks in the Battle of Crete. Ronald Neame acts as cinematographer and the film is produced by Anthony Havelock-Allan, who would stick with Lean to form the powerhouse Cineguild Productions by the time they made next week's film This Happy Breed.

Movie, whenever people say, "Duh--the book is always better than the movie!" the Margos would say, "Yeah--have you ever read Jaws?" Well, now we have another book-to-movie adaptation that features a horrible, racist, sexist, homophobic, and misogynistic novel that became a fun hit film. Sportswriter Paul Gallico helped many stories become excellent films, including Pride of the Yankees, The Snow Goose, and the Musical Stage Carnival! He wrote over 40 books, numerous short stories, and dozens of T.V. and movie scripts. He began his career working for the New York Daily News sports desk and later became a prolific travel writer, spending 10,000 miles on the road in the U.S. for Reader's Digest. In 1969, he published The Poseidon Adventure to little fanfare. The tale of a wayward ship sunk while traveling to Africa features some of the most loathsome characters we have ever had the displeasure of reading. (The audiobook featuring narration by actor Dylan Baker makes it slightly more palatable.)Trigger warning: This story features a character being sexually assaulted who then comforts her attacker and wishes she was pregnant by him. (Seriously!) The movie by producer Irwin Allen and director Ronald Neame became an instant classic that began a slate of many disaster films in the 1970s. It would become the highest-grossing film of 1973, grossing over $125 million worldwide. It won an Academy Award for Best Special Effects and best original song "The Morning After." Our lead actor is Gene Hackman as Reverand Frank Scott, a renegade preacher who turns into a hero for the passengers of the S.S. Poseidon (partly filmed on the RMS Queen Mary.. At the time, he was a hot property after the success of The French Connection, and his performance was very passionate. On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are waging a desperate, death-defying war with an overturned boat. Twice. We watched the Ronald Neame film from 1972, The Poseidon Adventure, AND the Wolfgang Petersen film from 2006, Poseidon. In celebration of the age of the first film we watched, we're doing a disaster movie double feature! We're out at sea and celebrating New Year's Day on a boat that just can't seem to stay afloat. The whole dang thing is a quitter.I mean, what sort of thing capsizes because of a giant wave? If boats are going to defy all logical sense by being behemoths and still floating on water, the least they could do is stand up to a wave or two.But noooooo, these dang things have got to immediately flip over and kill about 98% of its passengers and crew. Many people will blame the wave for this destruction, but maybe we've been looking at it all wrong.I suggest that the boat is the real monster here. Maybe if it had tried harder, then those hundreds of people would still have their lives. What an abject, horrifying monster the S.S. Poseidon is.(Recorded on August 04, 2022)Links to Stuff We Mentioned:The Poseidon Adventure (1972) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Poseidon (2006) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Wolfgang Petersen — The Movie Database (TMDB)Man of Steel (2013) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Grindhouse (2007) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Kevin Dillon — The Movie Database (TMDB)Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser - Walt Disney World ResortStar Wars (1977) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Titanic (1997) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Mortal Kombat - WikipediaChekhov's gun - WikipediaSpeed (1994) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Mission: Impossible (1996) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Emilio Estevez — The Movie Database (TMDB)Armageddon (1998) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Kingsman: The Secret Service (2015) — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Towering Inferno (1974) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Cast Away (2000) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Follow Us:Give us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts! Our Buzzsprout site! Our Instagram profile! Our Twitter profile!

Full Speed ahead, lads, for this week learning about our Third Ernest Borgnine episode, 1972's the Poseidon adventure. We are talking about Roddy McDowell's mixed up accent, so it is! As well as the largest underwater earthquake in history, grassing up Grandpa Joe for being a benefit cheat and why everyone in this hated thier fellow cast Members. --- The Poseidon Adventure is a 1972 American disaster film directed by Ronald Neame, produced by Irwin Allen, and based on Paul Gallico's 1969 novel of the same name. It has an ensemble cast including five Oscar winners: Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Jack Albertson, Shelley Winters and Red Buttons. The plot centers on the fictional SS Poseidon, an aging luxury liner on her final voyage from New York City to Athens before it is scrapped. On New Year's Eve, it is overturned by a tsunami. Passengers and crew are trapped inside, and a preacher attempts to lead a small group of survivors to safety. It is in the vein of other all-star disaster films of the early-mid 1970s such as Airport (1970), Earthquake (1974), and The Towering Inferno (1974). It was released in December 1972 and was the highest-grossing film of 1973, earning over $125 million worldwide. It won two Academy Awards,[3] a Golden Globe Award, a British Academy Film Award, and a Motion Picture Sound Editors Award.[4] A sequel, Beyond the Poseidon Adventure, also based on a novel by Gallico, was released in 1979.

Alec Guinness wrote and starred in this very funny and inspirational film about a painter who is connected to, and driven by, a strange mystical force called art. Directed by Ronald Neame. Starring Alec Guinness, Kay Walsh, Renee Houston, Mike Morgan. Screenplay by Alec Guinness based on the book by Joyce Cary. How is the world wrong about this movie? From Andras: This is my favorite Alec Guinness performance. Even though it was filmed in ‘57 and released in ‘58 “The Horse’s Mouth” feels like the beginning of the 60’s with its anarchic exuberance and rebellion in the name of art. More beatnik than hippie, I can’t help but feel like it influenced, or at least entertained, The Beatles and the rest of that generation of young British rockers and comedians when they were just inspired English kids like the one played by the poor doomed Mike Morgan in this film. Book Vs Movie: “The Poseidon Adventure” (1971) The differences between the super gross book and the really fun movie (We are not going to hide our bias here!) At Book Vs Movie, whenever people say “Duh--the book is always better than the movie!” the Margos would say “yeah--have you ever read Jaws?” Well, now we have another book to movie adaptation that features a horrible, racist, sexist, homophobic, and misogynistic novel that became a fun hit film.  Sportswriter Paul Gallico helped many stories become excellent films including Pride of the Yankees, The Snow Goose, and the stage musical Carnival! He wrote over 40 books, numerous short stories, and dozens of TV and movie scripts.  He began his career working for the sports desk at the New York Daily News and later became a prolific travel writer spending 10,000 miles on the road in the U.S. for Reader’s Digest.  In 1969, he published The Poseiden Adventure to little fanfare. The tale of a wayward ship that is sunk while traveling to Africa features some of the most loathsome characters we ever had the displeasure of reading. (The audiobook featuring narration by actor Dylan Baker makes it slightly more palatable.) Trigger warning: This story features a character being raped who then comforts her attacker and then wishes she was pregnant by him. (Seriously!) The movie by producer Irwin Allen and director Ronald Neame became an instant classic which began a slate of many disaster films in the 1970s. It would become the highest-grossing film of 1973 grossing over $125 million worldwide. It won an Academy Award for best special effects and for the best original song “The Morning After.”    Our lead actor is Gene Hackman as Reverand Frank Scott who is a renegade preacher who turns into a hero for the passengers of the S.S. Poseidon (partly filmed on the RMS Queen Mary.) at the time, he was a hot property after the success of The French Connection and his performance is very passionate.  Co-star Shelley Winters won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Belle Rosen--a middle-aged swimmer who gives her life to protect the survivors. (Spoiler!) Have a listen to find out our real feelings between book & movie as this one will go down as one of our biggest takedowns of a horrible piece of work.  In this ep the Margos discuss: The writing career of Paul Gallico How truly terrible this book is and why you should not read it.  The special effects of the film and how it changed disaster films of the future The cast: Gene Hackman (Reverand Frank Scott,) Ernest Borgnine (Mike Rogo,) Red Buttons (James Martin,) Carol Lynley (Nonnie Parry,) Roddy McDowell (Acres,) Stella Stevens (Linda Rogo,) Shelley Winters (Belle Rosen,) Jack Albertson (Manny Rosen,) Pamela Sue Martin (Susan Shelby,) Eric Shea (Robin Shelby,) and Leslie Nielsen (Captain Harrison)  Clips used: The Poseidon Adventure  trailer  A tidal wave hits the shit The immediate aftermath of the ship turning over Stella Stevens “panties” scene “Lindaaaaaaaaaa!!!” Reverend Scott sacrifices himself for the good of the group The group is rescued  Closing music “The Morning After” written by Al Kasha & Joel Hirschorn and sung by Maureen McGovern Join our Patreon page to help support the show! https://www.patreon.com/bookversusmovie  Book Vs. We talk about why this 4 time Oscar nominated film resonates with Rebecca over any other adaptation of the Dickens classic, we cover some of the differences between the book and the film, and we talk about how the lessons of A Christmas Carol are still relevant today. We also talk about Leslie Bricusse, who created all the songs for this musical adaptation, and we touch on some other famous films he wrote music for. We finally talk about the legendary stars of the film, Albert Finney and Alec Guinness, who would become the iconic Daddy Warbucks of Annie and Obi-Won Kenobi from the original Star Wars trilogy respectively.

The end of 2014, the beginning of 2015. Happy New Year, everybody! And what a better way to celebrate than with Ronald Neame's 1972 disaster classic “The Poseidon Adventure.” Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we enjoy the holiday with a wonderful conversation about this infamous ship. We talk about the nature of disaster movies from the 70s and producer Irwin Allen — the Master of Disaster — and how this genre turned into quite a thing for him. We discuss the ideas within the film, notably the religious elements, and look at what the film might be trying to say about those elements. We walk through each of the cast members — Gene Hackman, Shelley Winters, Ernest Borgnine, Red Buttons, Roddy McDowall, Jack Albertson, and more — and chat about what they each bring to the table. We discuss the amazing production design and the process they went through for flipping the set. We touch on director Neame and look at his history and what he initially thought when brought on to direct this film. And we examine the numbers for this film, looking at how well it did and why it set up the disaster genre for big successes in the 70s. It's a fun film to end one year and begin the next, and we have a great conversation about it. Tune in! Hey! You know what would be awesome? If you would drop us a positive rating on iTunes!
