On this episode of Late to the Party, we finally sit down to talk about the 2000 legal drama Erin Brockovich. From award-winning performances to its real-life environmental case, we discuss why this film became such a defining movie of the early 2000s and whether it still holds up today. We break down the story, the performances, and some of the storytelling choices that helped make the film both accessible and impactful.• The powerhouse performance from Julia Roberts that ultimately won her the Academy Award for Best Actress• The simplification of the real-life case the film is based on, and whether that choice made the story more accessible or took away from the complexity of the situation• Underdeveloped relationships with some of the side characters, including Erin's children and George• Why the film works as a classic David vs. Goliath story where the little guy takes on a powerful corporation• Erin's dynamic with Ed Masry, played by Albert Finney, and why we thought the pairing worked so well on screenIf you've never seen Erin Brockovich or you're revisiting it years later like we did, tune in as we break down what works, what doesn't, and whether this real-life legal drama still packs the same punch.Synopsis: A twice-divorced mother of three who sees an injustice, takes on the bad guy and wins – with a little help from her push-up bra. Erin goes to work for an attorney and comes across medical records describing illnesses clustered in one nearby town. She starts investigating and soon exposes a monumental cover-up.

This season I'm blowing the idea that ‘characters need arcs' out of the water. Erin Brockovich is a constant character and she's an underdog. With the odds against her, she does not change instead, she bends the world to suit herself. This is no mean feat, because the villain is powerful and wealthy. In underdog movies the speech in praise of the villain is essential. It's through this speech that we understand how powerful and how unlikely it is for our protagonist to come out on top. Join us as we unpack how a constant character and speeches in praise of the villain work together to deliver a deeply satisfying story. Trailer

Sisters Who Scene It

Send us a textKatie and Bridget sing very loudly and do choreography as they re-watch the Broadway Musical adaptation: Annie! It might have one of the weirdest political messaging of all time, but god damn it do the songs just slap! Come along as we meet Annie, a little orphan with a bad wig and a dream, hoping to escape the orphanage and find her real parents - all while loudly singing about it while everyone's trying to sleep. But when Annie gets adopted (only for a week as a PR stunt LOL) by the rich Daddy Warbucks - real name - she gets to experience what being rich is really about. All while the rest of her friends still at the orphanage with the drunk Miss Hannigan continue to have to do chores and get abused! When Daddy Warbucks offers a reward for Annie's real parents to come forth, the real evil greed of money is shown and Annie almost falls off a building or something. But it's fine because money solves everything and so does SINGING! YAY! We've got hardcore Republican messaging (HELP), gin baths, and banger songs all in this really entertaining movie musical. Released in 1982, it stars Aileen Quinn, Albert Finney, Carol Burnett, Ann Reinking, Tim Curry, and Bernadette Peters.

In this episode, Stuart and Jacob are joined by special guest Hannah as they take on a decade spanning musical, with examinations of the 1982 and 2014 films (and the Disney produced, made-for-TV 1999 version). Charm is explored and nostalgia expounded upon as they look upon the many memorable performances of 1982m, look at how they were done on television with a smaller budget, and then jump all the way ahead to modern times to view a story that could be anything OTHER than Annie! Why does this musical endure for audiences, and how do you iterate on what many consider to be a timeless tale? Is there a place for the whimsical in a world that feels increasingly sterile? And just how many times can one mention "Little Girls" before it gets weird? Also featured in this episode are a brief dive into "Winter Burrow", praise for Carol Burnett and Albert Finney, Jamie Foxx's germaphobia, and some collar-tugging enjoyment of Punjab. EPISODE 111 -  “CELEBRATING DIANE KEATON: THE HIDDEN GEMS OF A HOLLYWOOD ORIGINAL” - 10/27/25 When DIANE KEATON passed away on October 11, 2025, she left behind an incredible legacy of important films and stunning performances that were some of the best of the era. Her youthful effervescence, her fashion style, everything about her belied mortality.  Most people think of her masterful, Oscar-winning performance in Annie Hall, (1977) but her career is so much more than that one role. Over the past five decades, her filmography is a study in contrasts: farce, heart wrenching dramas, rom-coms with a twist — she's taken risks, playing complicated women (even in the lighter faire), and made some really interesting choices. In this episode, we're going to take a look at some of the films Diane Keaton made that don't always get the spotlight they deserve. Watching these films, whether for the first time or a revisit, you realize just how bold and varied her work was. Whether in a quiet drama focusing on an intimate character study, a quirky comedy, or something completely unexpected, Diane Keaton always brought a mix of honesty, humor, and heart that was entirely her own.  So, today we honor the life and legacy of the multifaceted Diane Keaton. Send us a textSPECIAL NOTE: SEASON 15 OF THE GOOD, THE POD AND THE UGLY CELEBRATES THE USE OF THE PRACTICAL AND DIGITAL EFFECT KNOWN AS THE SQUIB. IRL GUN VIOLENCE IS INTOLERABLE AND RENOUNCED BUT... CINEMATIC VIOLENCE WILL BE CELEBRATED IN A WAY THAT MAY DISTURB SOME LISTENERS.  What's the rumpus? This week TGTPTU gives the Coen Brothers movie classic MILLER'S CROSSING (1990) the treatment as part of its Squib Season, see.  Lensed by Barry Sonnenfeld in his last frolic as the brothers' cinematographer, Ethan Coen told the man with a golden eye that Miller's Crossing should be a handsome film about men in hats, and Sonnenfeld delivers the goods with one spectacularly shot period piece from the Prohibition Era.  The picture stars Gabriel Byrne as Tom Reagan, the hard-drinking, harder-gambling Irish consigliere who knows all the angles, who's having an affair with his boss's skirt Verna Bernbaum (played by Marcia Gay Harden, who shortly after filming would originate the role of Harper Pitt in Tony Kushner's two-part play Angels in America, see Season 7 of TGTPTU for more!).  Pod favorite John Turturro plays her brother Bernie, a conniving low-life crook who causes the friction in the ranks and can turn on the waterworks when needed. Jon Polito plays a loving dad allergic to the high-hat and with his right-hand J. E. Freeman playing the Dane (same year he'd star in Wild at Heart, see Season 4) they plan to take over the town from Albert Finney in one of his two roles as Tom's boss Leo (the other appearance uncredited, spoilers during the episode for this Easter egg). Also, director and occasional second-unit-for-the-Coens-director Sam Raimi (and, can you believe it, brother of actor Ted Raimi from Hard Target covered earlier this Squib Games season!) shows up to plug a speakeasy patron grabbing air before himself getting gatted. And if you still haven't had your fill, at this buffet of talent we even get a smattering of Steve Buscemi delivering ratatat dialogue for a scene.   This ep, Jack brings the book report, Thomas the Danish facts, Ken reenacts the experience of watching Miller's Crossing with him by dropping movie quotes throughout the episode, Ryan brings up Gabriel Byrne's acting chops, and all four hosts harmonize on the greater good.   Now get outta here. Caring crusaders are almost their own movie genre and one of the most successful films about such is Erin Brockovich. Steven Soderbergh had a huge year in 2000 with Traffic and also this biopic, turning both into blockbuster Oscar-winners. He won the award for directing Traffic while Julia Roberts won her own gold trophy for playing the brash, real-life, legal assistant who works day and night to expose an environmental cover-up that killed children in a small California town. Albert Finney, Aaron Eckhart and Marg Helgenberger shine too, but this movie belong to Julia…and it might be her signature performance. So, Stick Man, be like Erin and be an empath in provocative clothes as we file a class action lawsuit against those who poison water, but as we also review Erin Brockovich in this 673rd edition of Have You Ever Seen. Working at a small law firm, Erin discovers that Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) has been contaminating the water supply of Hinkley, California, leading to severe health issues for its residents. Despite having no formal legal training, her relentless determination and personal connection to the victims drive her to build a case against the corporation. With her bold personality and refusal to back down, she helps secure a record-breaking $333 million settlement. There have also been some bad ones — don't we all still cringe a little at SALLY FIELDS' “You like me” speech? Big Fish follows the many craftfully told stories of Edward Bloom and how they affected the lives of those who knew him. But this couldn't be further from the truth. At the Colson Center, we believe the Church is God's gift to the world, called to be present and active in this cultural moment without being taken captive by it. In other words, the Church is meant to “move the world,” not move with the world. That's why we equip believers with a Christian worldview through our media, training programs, and events—because a Church that “moves the world” starts with one faithful Christian. We need your help to continue strengthening the Church in 2025. Thanks to a generous matching donation, every gift between now and December 31 will be DOUBLED until we meet the full match. Help us strengthen the Church to move the world in 2025. Make a gift with double the impact at colsoncenter.org/swdecember.    The Strong Women Podcast is a product of the Colson Center, which equips Christians to live out their faith with clarity, confidence, and courage in this cultural moment. The indie filmmaker Alan Rudolph ("Choose Me", "Trouble in Mind") makes his first appearance on the podcast. His 1999 film, originally written for his mentor Bob Altman to direct but ended up in his hands some years later. That film is"Breakfast of Champions" and, after 25 years, is returning to theaters. The film was adapted from the unadaptable novel by Kurt Vonnegut, and stars Bruce Willis and Albert Finney. In this special conversation, Rudolph reflects on his year as Altman's assistant director and his career at large. "Breakfast of Champions" tells the story of a fictional town in the mid west that is home to a group of idiosyncratic and slightly neurotic characters. Dwayne Hoover is a wealthy car dealership owner that's on the brink of suicide and is losing touch with reality. https://youtu.be/SaOQbpBJ6t0 Carrie Rickey is a film journalist and author. Her new book is a biography of the French New Wave filmmaker Agnès Varda called "A Complicated Passion: The Life and Work of Agnès Varda" (W.W. Norton, 2024). Over the course of her sixty-five-year career, the longest of any female filmmaker, Agnès Varda (1928–2019) wrote and directed some of the most acclaimed films of her era, from her tour de force "Cléo from 5 to 7" (1962), a classic of modernist cinema, to the beloved documentary "The Gleaners and I" (2000) four decades later. She helped to define the French New Wave, inspired an entire generation of filmmakers, and was recognized with major awards at the Cannes, Berlin, and Venice Film Festivals, as well as an honorary Oscar at the Academy Awards. In this lively biography, former Philadelphia Inquirer film critic Carrie Rickey explores the complicated passions that informed Varda's charmed life and indelible work. Rickey traces Varda's three remarkable careers—as still photographer, as filmmaker, and as installation artist. She explains how Varda was a pioneer in blurring the lines between documentary and fiction, using the latest digital technology and carving a path for women in the movie industry. She demonstrates how Varda was years ahead of her time in addressing sexism, abortion, labor exploitation, immigrant rights, and race relations with candor and incisiveness. https://youtu.be/DwECtUfablw
