Benson and Stabler have an open-and-shut case against psycho killer Peter Harrison. But annoying lab tech Dale Stuckey makes an error with the bloody knife, leaving Judge Donnelly no choice but to set the suspect free. Munch and Fin tail Harrison to Coney Island and "chase" him through a fun house before another body is discovered. Soon the detectives are dealing with booby traps, secret lairs with secret tunnels, poison-filled needles and poison-filled gas. Munch reaches out to his mentally ill ex-wife (Carol Kane) to help capture the elusive culprit. While visiting the crime lab, Stabler discovers the killer's DNA belongs to Stuckey. After taking Elliot hostage, he admits to framing Harrison and targeting those who've embarrassed him. Benson tricks Stuckey into thinking she loves him by slapping the hell out of Stabler. When Olivia goes in for a kiss, Elliot kicks Stuckey and knocks him out. We're going back to our October 11, 2017 episode to look at Special Victims Unit season 10 episode 22 "Zebras." Our name is Praising Kane (the world's greatest chronological Carol Kane podcast), you killed our fathers.. prepare to die! We're finally moving into some iconic films in Carol's oeuvre, and they don't get much bigger than the 1987 fantasy-comedy-romance THE PRINCESS BRIDE, adapted from the beloved William Goldman book of the same name. Everyone loves it.. but did WE? Listen and find out. But before that we have a chat about the very first episode of the short-lived 1986 sitcom ALL IS FORGIVEN, featuring Carol Kane in a supporting role as the head writer of a beleaguered soap opera produced by the inexperienced Paula Russell (played by Bess Armstrong). I'm laughing already! And you'll be laughing too once you start listening. The post Episode 271 – Praising Kane – The Princess Bride (1987) first appeared on Cinema Smorgasbord.
For this cycle's "Mise-Unseen" entry, Julian, Emilio and Madeline fire up 'Hester Street', Joan Micklin Silver's overlooked and under-appreciated film from 1975 depicting the struggles one Jewish family, recently immigrants to the United States, face while assimilating to life in their new homeland at the turn of the century. The trio comment on the film's unique depiction of New York City (particularly in relation to when it was first released), the unusual complexity that most characters are given, how centering Gitl's journey gives the film a strong emotional core, the film's unexpected humor, its portrayal of the working class Jewish immigrant experience class, and why this movie and its story feel so unique. They then have a great chat with Sharyn Rothstein, an accomplished writer who recently adapted 'Hester Street' for the stage, and discuss what was meaningful to her about this story, what details from the film spoke to her, and what the stage production does to modernize and reshape the story for today's audiences. It's a deep dive into an unsung 1970s NYC film you won't want to miss! Sharyn Rothstein is an award winning playwright, teacher, and writer for television. PRAISING KANE returns with the notorious Elaine May-directed, Dustin Hoffman & Warren Beatty-starring bomb ISHTAR from 1986! Featuring those two as hapless songwriters who end up wrapped up in international intrigue in the middle east, it had a famously messy production but is it as bad as its reputation? Or as good as its revised reputation? Also, did you know Carol Kane is in it? SHE IS! But first we have to chat about the 1986 Cinemax comedy sketch special from Bob Goldthwait called DON'T WATCH THIS SHOW, with Whoopi Goldberg, Tim Kazurinsky, Dee Snider, (an uncredited) Robin Williams and - of course - CAROL KANE! It's AWFUL! All this and the latest CK news so LISTEN! The post Episode 264 – Praising Kane – Ishtar (1986) first appeared on Cinema Smorgasbord.
The title says it all - huge week for Carol Kane. We're talking about two of her projects: The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (and how it doesn't hold up) and The Pacifier (and how this genre of movie is gone now). Plus we talk about 50 Cent's The Massacre, which to the best of our knowledge, does NOT include Carol Kane. Maybe we missed something though! Join us for a great week with all of this plus 2025 Oscars reactions.
How long does edge last? What won't you watch Jack Nicholson do? Does realism help or hurt? And how big should a hotel room be? In this episode Sean is joined by Timm and Jeremy to talk about 1973's The Last Detail, an adaptation of the Darryl Ponicsan book about 2 sailors assigned to escort a kleptomaniac, junior sailor to naval prison. Considered at the time to be Jack Nicholson's greatest performance, The Last Detail delivers warmth and humor alongside utter hopelessness in a 104 minute package. email: openmicmovies@latertaterfilms.comwebsite: openmicmovies.buzzsprout.cominstagram: @latertaterfilms

It's the first episode of 2024 and PRAISING KANE is packed with wild Carol Kane content, starting with the hour long episode of Shelley Duvall's TALL TALES & LEGENDS adapting the famous poem "Casey at the Bat".. sort of! With Elliott Gould, Howard Cosell, Bob Uecker, Bill Macy and CAROL KANE! It's plenty odd. Then we look at an episode of the 80s comedy crime series CRAZY LIKE A FOX /w Jack Warden and John Rubinstein, featuring Carol Kane guesting as a beleaguered secretary. Then it's time for the main event, the Penny Marshall directed comedy-thriller JUMPIN JACK FLASH starring Whoopi Goldberg and a slew of famous faces in supporting roles- including Carol Kane! It's a Liam O'Donnell childhood favorite, but does it hold up? Let's find out! The post Episode 255 – Praising Kane – Jumpin Jack Flash (1986) first appeared on Cinema Smorgasbord.

A woman (Carol Kane) is drawn into a neighborhood church by the sound of music beautifully sung. A marriage is taking place within. Do beautiful music and ceremony make a marriage? Reverie, a world premiere written and directed by Oscar, Tony, and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright John Patrick Shanley (Doubt, Brooklyn Laundry, Danny and the Deep Blue Sea), showcases the talents of Carol Kane (The Princess Bride, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”) and Scarlett Strallen (Cole Porter's The New Yorkers, She Loves Me). We're deep into our second annual Christmas movie theme and we haven't mined any material from, or inspired by, the Charles Dickens classic “A Christmas Carol”. Fuck it, this year we'll do two adaptations and maybe catch an old version of the story next year. This particular adaptation was prime basic cable Christmas break material when we were kids and in many ways it holds up and even impresses in certain ways. Bill Murray could carry a comedy in the 80s and his leading role of a stingy TV executive Scrooge-stand-in does deliver some quality jokes bouncing off of an extended comedic cast. Richard Donner's 1988 Christmas comedy “SCROOGED” remains pretty worthy holiday cheer and there's no shortage of prime 80s stars including Bobcat Goldthwait, Carol Kane, David Johansen, Alfre Woodard and Karen Allen. There's also some nice appearances from veteran actors of TV and film such as Robert Mitchum, John Forsythe, John Houseman and Buddy Hackett. Miles Davis is even in this thing. Folks, you gotta bring out the bells and whistles when you're adapting a story that everybody knows. You gotta throw some horror in there. Maybe even a little sadism. Just go with it. "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" is a 2015 Netflix sitcom created by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock. The show follows the life of Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper), a relentlessly optimistic woman who, after being rescued from a doomsday cult where she was held captive for 15 years, decides to start a new life in New York City. After four seasons, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt ended when its creators felt that the story had reached a natural conclusion. Rather than stretching the premise or compromising the quality of the show, they decided to wrap it up while it was still fresh and beloved by fans. Will the S1E1 guys want to bunker up and binge this one? Listen as they deep dive the show's pilot episode, "Kimmy Goes Outside!" and find out. Starring: Ellie Kemper, Tituss Burgess, Carol Kane, Jane Krakowski, Lauren Adams, Sara Chase, Sol Miranda, Matt Lauer & Jon Hamm www.S1E1POD.com MERCH Instagram & X (Twitter): @S1E1Pod

It's the SPOOOoooOOOkiest month, so why not check out the surprisingly un-spooky (and, honestly, pretty unfunny) TRANSYLVANIA 6-5000 on the world's finest chronological Carol Kane podcast PRAISING KANE? Starring Jeff Goldblum and Ed Begley Jr. as two hapless tabloid reporters forced to go to Transylvania to work on a story about monster sightings, the film has supporting performances from Joseph Bologna, John Byner, Michael Richards, Jeffrey Jones (ugh), an extremely underutilized Geena Davis and - of course - Carol Kane! Directed by frequent Mel Brooks collaborator Rudy De Luca and bankrolled by the Dow chemical company (?) it's plenty weird. How weird? Let's find out! Welcome to another episode of "We've Got the Beat." Join hosts Michael and Mindy as they dive into the psychological depths of horror films, exploring the trauma and fear that drive the genre. This episode focuses on the classic horror movies "When a Stranger Calls" and its sequel, analyzing their portrayal of teenage trauma and its long-lasting repercussions. Michael and Mindy discuss the impact of low-budget filmmaking on the horror genre, comparing the raw fear elicited by early slasher films to the polished, yet less terrifying, remakes of the 2000s. They highlight the performances of actors like Carol Kane and Jill Schoelen, emphasizing how their portrayals add depth and realism to the narrative. From urban legends and psychological thrillers to the evolution of horror tropes, this episode delves into what makes these films enduringly terrifying. Whether you're a seasoned horror aficionado or a casual viewer, this discussion promises to offer new insights into the art of scaring audiences.
It's a Jewish-themed episode of the BFG Podcast this week. What else is new, you're asking, and you will be right to some extent, but that's just how the dreidel fell, content-wise. First up, host Neal Pollack visits the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, and finds the Jewish content extremely wanting, particularly in the 'Hollywoodland' exhibit, which purports to be about the Jewish founders of the eight major studios of Hollywood's golden age but quickly descends into stereotypes, calling the studio heads "predators" and tyrants" and not spending any time interested in their actual Judaism. Neal laments the lack of pride in Jewish identity in the exhibit.Special guest Michael Kaplan, a former writer for Roseanne and Frasier (not Friends), part of a group of L.A. writers who have protested the exhibit, laments the obvious tokenism of the museum display, as well as its smallness and lack of consequence. Not once, he points out, does the exhibit celebrate the Jewish tradition of storytelling that led the founders to establish the movie business in the first place. The exhibit is a cryin' shame, and both Neal and Michael worry about the imprint it will have on the many thousands of schoolchildren who march through the museum every year.Speaking of Jewish storytelling, Rebecca Kurson drops in to talk to Neal about 'Between the Temples,' a new movie that celebrates ordinary Judaism in all its messy glory. Becky saw Between the Temples on the date that we learned Hamas had murdered six Jewish hostages, and boy did she need this tonic, which depicts American Jewish life and celebrates it as not only normal, but necessary. Carol Kane, in full Ruth Gordon mode, is an older lady who decides, late in life, to become a Bat Mitzvah. Despite some twitchy direction, this is one of the best and most accurate depictions of Jewish devotional life in recent memory. If only the Academy Museum would have done the same.If you're listening this week, then Mazel tov!

Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy have eight movie reviews for you including two from their fest coverage the past year. Jason Schwartzman and Carol Kane star in a Sundance fave (Between the Temples) and a game of cat-and-mouse between a serial killer and their prey that debuted at Fantastic Fest in 2023 (Strange Darling). Also on tap are three lifelong friends and the hardships they endure over a lifetime (The Supremes At Earl's All-You-Can Eat) while a small town turns to crime over a pile of money (Greedy People). The Adams Family is back with their latest horror offering (Hell Hole) while John Woo remakes one of his all-time classics (The Killer) and Bill Skarsgard steps into the role made infamous by Brandon Lee (The Crow). Finally, Zoe Kravitz makes her directorial debut with an island party that some will want to forget (Blink Twice). 0:00 - Intro 1:27 - Between the Temples 11:00 - Strange Darling 21:28 – The Supremes At Earl's All-You-Can Eat 31:48 - Greedy People 44:01 - Hell Hole 53:49 – The Killer 1:05:42 – The Crow 1:19:00 - Blink Twice 1:33:30 - Outro
This week we're excited to present a conversation with Between the Temples director Nathan Silver and cast members Carol Kane, Robert Smigel, and Cindy Silver. Directed by New York filmmaker Nathan Silver, who co-wrote the screenplay with C. Mason Wells, Between the Temples follows Jason Schwartzman as a bereaved cantor at an upstate New York synagogue, who has lost his wife, can't sing anymore, lives with his two mothers, and has a newfound taste for mudslide cocktails. While he keeps kosher and remains devout, his ennui-addled regression seems all but terminal until his 70-year-old grade school music teacher (played by Carol Kane) walks back into his life and becomes his new adult Bat Mitzvah student… and maybe something more. Something like Harold and Maude by way of Mike Leigh, Silver's ninth feature is perhaps his most accomplished film yet—a portrait of love in a time of loss that is equal parts touching, cringingly hilarious, and effortlessly strange, shot in stunning 16mm by Sean Price Williams and featuring indelible performances by Schwartzman and Kane. This conversation was moderated by FLC Assistant Programmer Madeline Whittle.
This week, Evan talks about BETWEEN THE TEMPLES (2:14), Nathan Silver's Jewish comedy starring Jason Schwartzman and Carol Kane about a man's grade-school music teacher who becomes his adult Bat Mitzvah student. Unfortunately, he wasn't a fan of the humor or awkward scenarios. Then, we (Dave and Megan) review HELL HOLE (13:24), John Adams and Toby Poser's (aka the Adams family) horror film about a fracking crew encountering an 1800s soldier, who's still alive with a parasite inside him. We had mixed reviews: One of us liked it, one hated it. Finally, we all discuss SMOKING TIGERS (34:19), So Young Shelly Yo's moving, sensitive, and insightful coming-of-age drama about a Korean-American teen (Ji-young Yoo) as she navigates attending an elite college prep school amidst her parents' separation. We loved it. And on our Patreon exclusive bonus episode, we cover Jim Jarmusch's NIGHT ON EARTH, in honor of Gena Rowlands, who recently passed away and stars in one of the global anthology's segments.
Visionary Between the Temples filmmakers Nathan Silver (writer/director) and C. Mason Wells (writer) join host Jon Dieringer for a housewarming pod in the new Screen Slate HQ. We speak about the duo's long-running collaboration, the family history that inspired the story of an adult bat mitzvah, and casting Jason Schwartzman and Carol Kane for performances that are standouts in two illustrious careers.Plus: Chris Wells is nearly killed, and (recording on July 30) Jon receives a chilling sign of Alain Delon's impending death.Between the Temples opens today in theaters nationwide.TrailerVenues & showtimesSupport the Show. The Screen Slate Podcast is supported by its Patreon members. McMaster about his 13 months working in the Trump White House; Nancy Giles profiles actress Carol Kane, now starring in the film “Between the Temples”; Lesley Stahl interviews novelist Carl Hiaasen, whose bestseller “Bad Monkey” is now an Apple TV+ series; Ted Koppel examines why coal miners in Appalachia are suffering from black lung disease at increasingly younger ages; and Conor Knighton looks at efforts to protect and rescue wild donkeys.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Who loves Bud Cort? We (being the hosts of Praising Kane, the world's most beloved Carol Kane-themed podcast) do! On this episode we're doing a FULL CORT PRESS with not one but TWO Kane/Cort pairings (and some bonus Bud in the news section). We start with a spooky episode of 80s anthology favorite Tales From the Darkside putting Cort against Kane in a light-hearted magic battle. Then we move onto the startlingly unfunny 1984 comedy THE SECRET DIARY OF SIGMUND FREUD featuring Cort as Freud, Kane as his (eventual) wife and some of the most disturbing IMDB trivia involving Klaus Kinski you're likely to ever hear! Can you resist listening after all that? NOPE! The post Episode 234 – Praising Kane – The Secret Diary of Sigmund Freud (1984) & Tales From The Darkside Season 1, Episode 14 ‘Snip Snip' first appeared on Cinema Smorgasbord.
