Great bands and great records shouldn't come down to a competition, but by way of bringing it to your attention, Tindersticks' Soft Tissue was my choice of 5th best album of 2024. I'm touched that Stuart Staples seems genuinely pleased to be on the list. Alexi Petridis' review of that record in the Guardian was so good I read it a few times. “If the overall message seems to be about noticing beauty in small things as a bulwark against the ghastliness of 21st-century life”.That captures the mood of the album in precious few words. I found myself drawn into Soft Tissue…seduced by it really. From the opening song, New World, and its topline “I won't let my love become my weakness” it got me, and the rest of the record buried itself into my brain even though I couldn't pinpoint why. But as Stuart Staples attests, the best music connects with us in a way that is beyond analysis:“If a record sets things off, gets you searching for something or looking for meaning, then it's doing its job. If we understand it too much, it's kind of dead, whereas if there is mystery to it, space to try and understand it, then it's alive”. Tindersticks music is beyond analysis but that hasn't stopped me consuming everything written about the band over the years with almost as much hunger as their music. What makes them such a well kept secret? In the book Long Players, author Eimear McBride's essay on the second Tindersticks album (the band is rare in every sense, including the dubious accolade of being a band with two self-titled albums, the debut and its follow-up). “There's a true, if disconcerting, magic to the three way wedding of the album's beautiful, intricate scoring, the cigarette-stained, shame-filled intimacy of the lyrics and Stuart Staples' deep, dark, world-weary singing voice”. If the best artists create a world in which their work can come alive and their fans can escape from the humdrum of life and the worries of the world, then Tindersticks are the perfect example. But beware those who enter, this world is not perfect and to overuse typical adjectives, it is dark and as McBride attests, disconcerting. It's also strangely comforting.Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

Go raibh míle, a Sheáin - Thanks a million, Seán. It was brilliant to explore these themes with you. We touch on the enlightening and awakening Gaeilge Revival in all things music, language, culture, and dúchas - a deep sense of respect and honour for heritage. Seán Mulrooney's shift into solo artistry represents a deeply personal evolution, blending his Irish psychedelic folk roots with universal themes of justice, empathy, and healing. Known as the frontman of Tau & the Drones of Praise, he now steps forward with his debut solo album, This Is My Prayer. Mulrooney's artistic achievements include winning the 2023 Edinburgh Fringe Lustrum Award with his sister, Dee Mulrooney (another podcast guest I was privileged to host), for their acclaimed performance of Growler. This new chapter began with the release of "No Two Sides" in December 2023, a haunting track addressing the Palestinian genocide. The song resonated widely, reaching No. 7 on the iTunes charts and sparking a shift in Mulrooney's creative direction. Alongside this, he founded Ómós Records in 2023, based in Ireland, with the label's first release being This Is My Prayer, due out February 2025. Launching his album at Whelan's in one month! 15th February The album emerged from a transformative period of solitude in early 2024 when Mulrooney, following a breakup, retreated to a cabin in Wicklow and wrote six songs in February. Exploring themes of love, heartache, and personal power, the album blends dense Irish folk elements with worldly and otherworldly influences, including a whimsical track about dolphins getting high on pufferfish tetrodotoxin. Recorded with longtime collaborator Earl Harvin of Tindersticks, This Is My Prayer is a spiritually charged, raw, and heartfelt embodiment of Mulrooney's artistic growth. We turn to the (mean-spirited?) You're Going To Lose That Girl this week as JG and Andrew contemplate another one of Lennon's less-than-progressive lyrics. Is the song as sour as the lyrics look on paper? Why is this such a giggly episode? What do the Tindersticks have to do with anything? And how long can a diversion go on for before returning to the actual topic at hand? (Answer: quite long!) Wann eng Band eng kloer Visioun huet, vun där Musek, déi si maachen a wëlle maachen, da schéngt dat ëmmer duerch. Et kann een et zum Beispill un enger konsequenter Diskographie erkennen. D'Tindersticks, de Quintett vun Nottingham, deen 1991 mat der EP “Old Horse” hiren Debut erausbruecht huet, hunn definitiv e roude Fuedem an hirem Schafen. Zanter hirem éischten Debut 1993 hu si ouni midd ze ginn hir Musek weiderentwéckelt a verfeinert. 31 Joer méi spéit si si bei hirem 14. Studioalbum ukomm, d'Plack “Soft Tissue“, erauskomm virun 11 Deeg. An nach un enger anerer Saach weist sech, datt eng Band mengt, wat si mécht: datt et iwwer d'Joren ëmmer méi schwéier gëtt, si an e Genre-Tirang ze quëtschen. D'Tindersticks kléngen ëmmer no sech selwer, a keng aner Band kléngt wéi si. “Soft Tissue“ vun Tindersticks ass eraus op City Slang, de Marc Clement hëlt mat duerch den Album.

For the first episode of 2024 we're going back almost 30 years to 1995 to completely ignore britpop and talk about much, much better music that was happening at the same time. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - At The Gates, Bjork, Cathedral, Clutch, Dubstar, Faith No More, Fear Factory, Foo Fighters, Fugazi, Garbage, Green Day, Emmylou Harris, The Jayhawks, Low, My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Radiohead, The Smashing Pumpkins, Smog, Spacehog, Sparklehorse, Strapping Young Lad, Matthew Sweet, Teenage Fanclub, Therapy?, Tindersticks, Whale, White Zombie, The Wildhearts, & Yo La Tengo. This episode is dedicated to the memory of the legendary music journalist and bloody lovely bloke Neil Kulkarni who sadly and suddenly passed away last week. You may know Neil from the Chart Music Podcast, from his writing for Melody Maker, Kerrang, Vox, The Quietus, Plan B, Metal Hammer, DJ Mag & more, or you may have heard him when he guested on Colin & Ian's other podcast Free With This Months Issue in August last year. Neil's death sadly leaves his two daughters without a parent so his Chart Music & Melody Maker cohost David Stubbs has arranged a crowdfunder. please donate if you're able to do so - https://www.gofundme.com/f/neil-kulkarni?qid=17adb77df59eabad52ce7dca32d49510Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4t3vB1jZf6lxQZMBIuTYhx?si=288cce79f5654ce9Find our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes, you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdg Ian's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqA and Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9Nw The playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Say hello at www.facebook.com/wedigmusicpcast or tweet us at http://twitter.com/wedigmusicpcast or look at shiny pictures on Instagram at http://instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast Part of the We Made This podcast network. https://twitter.com/wmt_network You can also find all the We Dig Music & Free With This Months Issue episodes at www.wedigpodcasts.com

Vocalist/guitarist Brian Krumm formed The Great Crusades more than 20 years ago, following his tenure with The Suede Chain. The Great Crusades' debut, The First Spilled Drink of the Evening was released in 1997, earning the praise of Rolling Stone's David Fricke: “The Great Crusades look at life through a shot-glass lens, mixing anger, muscle and minor-key remorse like a roughneck Tindersticks with the bonus of a singer who's got the tubercular pipes of Tom Waits and Axl Rose's love child.” In 2000, Damaged Goods was released by Glitterhouse Records in Europe and Checkered Past Records in North America. Next, the Never Go Home tour was presented by Musikexpress Magazine and the band appeared on the legendary TV program Rockpalast. (The band also played Rockpalast in 2015—one of only a few bands to play the show twice.) Welcome to the Hiawatha Inn, Four Thirty, Keep Them Entertained, Fiction to Shame, Thieves of Chicago and Until the Night Turned to Day followed, each providing a new focus for Krumm's ever-evolving songwriting and storytelling. Two songs from Keep Them Entertained appeared in the season 4 finale of the HBO vampire series True Blood. In 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic put music venues on hold worldwide, Krumm focused on solo work and began writing the materials that'd wind up on Just Fade Away. With the album set for release, Brian Krumm and His Barfly Friends plans to tour in 2023. http://www.briankrumm.com https://www.instagram.com/barflykrumm/https://twitter.com/BarflyKrummwww.facebook.com/briankrummandhisbarflyfriendshttps://www.bandsintown.com/a/15518730-brian-krumm-and-his-barfly-friendshttps://www.songkick.com/artists/10264541-brian-krumm-and-his-barfly-friends/calendarhttps://pravdarecords.bandcamp.com/artists

I wasn't planning on making a Halloween themed mix but a couple of days ago I heard a new album called "Xiuxiuejar" by Hekla and I knew I had to use some tracks in a mix. Hekla is an Icelandic musician who use the theremin to create haunting, other-worldly soundscapes. Perfect for a Halloween mix. Some of the other tracks follow a similar vibe I have used for creepy mixes in the past, sort of a dark jazz feel. Then I mix in some noisy stuff, some ambient & some other oddities. I don't want these mixes to be ultra dark doom ambient but this is more off-kilter than most Low Light Mixes. After finding the theremin tracks from Hekla I was reminded of a very theremin-like instrument - the Ondes Martenot. It looks like a piano or organ but sounds like a theremin and it's played by sliding a ring attached to wires up and down the keyboard. Check out this video for an idea of how it's played and what it sounds like: There are two tracks in the mix that use the Ondes Martenot. They are Tindersticks - The Strangler & Christine Ott - Pluie. I believe Christine Ott plays the instrument on the Tindersticks track as well as her own. Radiohead is famous for using the Odnes Martenot in a few songs. Maybe I'll make an entire mix featuring the instrument someday.
