Just a movie check-in of what I have watched over the past couple days. From the 1978 style horror of Piranha to the delightfully violent Guns Akimbo, In between all these I also watched The Old Guard, which I did not like at all and am still SHOCKED that people enjoyed.
Over the past few days I have seen "The Italian Job" (1969), "Bad Education" (2020), "Athlete A" (2020), "Blow The Man Down" (2020). In a nice twist...all of them are really good! "The Italian Job": B "Bad Education": A "Athlete A": A "Blow The Man Down": B+

Book Vs Movie (Replay) “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” The Washing Irving Short Story Classic Vs the Tim Burton Movie The Margos are back and talking about spooky books & movies since, duh--it’s October! This is our favorite month of the year and we have so much fun talking about one of our best-loved stories from our childhood-- The Legend of Sleepy Hollow written by the fascinating Washington Irving. The only hard part about this episode was deciding which version of the movie we should cover (there are several!) In the end, we decided to stick with one of our favorite directors, Tim Burton and his reimaging of the tale-- Sleepy Hollow. We begin by looking at the incredible life of the author and how a yellow fever epidemic (prevalent in his childhood) made him familiar with the ghost stories of Hudson Valley, New York. Also, how the youngest of eleven children named for the first President of the United States took his lifelong love of writing and history to become America’s first famous “man of letters.” (If you are a fan of New York City trivia and/or the origin of Christmas traditions--you will be especially happy with this ep!) After that, we once again go into the film archives of Tim Burton and check out his unique take on not only the character of the historically smarmy, school teacher and not-handsome-at-all Ichabod Crane (played as a hot NYC police investigator by Johnny Depp) and the plot of the story which here centers around magic and spells. So which did the Margos like better? Book or Movie? Check out the link below to find out! In this ep the Margos discuss : The NBC Halloween special which starred Jeff Goldblum and is unfortunately not available by streaming service. The 1949 Disney movie (The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad) that scared both Margos in our childhoods. The opportunity to choose from over 40 different versions of the audiobook. How the term Nickerbocker (“The Nicks,”) Gotham and the phrase “the almighty dollar” are all attributed to Washington Irving. The various interpretations of the short story and the meaning behind Ichabod’s disappearance. The incredible look of Tim Burton movies and the art direction by Rick Heinrichs and Peter Young who won the Academy Award in 2000. The main differences between the short story and movie. Plus, we are movie trivia and our thoughts on the casting including Christina Ricci, Christopher Walken, and Miranda Richardson. Book Vs Movie (Replay) “Carrie” The Margos Take On the Stephen King Classic in this Redo Ep It’s October and the Margos are SO excited to revisit a classic Stephen King tale--Carrie which we originally covered in 2014 (using the old, old way we recorded back in the early days.) This is not only King's first movie adaptation but it is also based on his first published novel. There are so many changes between book & movie that we wanted to give it a modern treatment (meaning better sound and lots of clips!) Just how different is the original novel versus the Brian DePalma masterpiece of horror? Whoo boy---there were some major changes made (and for very good reason in many instances.) So which did the Margos like better? Book or Movie? Check out the link below to find out! Once again, we are SO lucky to have Penguin Books sponsor this episode! The Margos are thrilled to be asked to talk about author Ransom Riggs’ newest “Miss Peregrine’s story”--A Map of Days which is on sale right now. This is the fourth novel in the series and lead character Jacob Portman’s life in the United States is the setting for this newest adventure. Get your copy today! (It makes for a great gift, by the way.) In this ep the Margos discuss : The backstory behind Stephen King’s first novel (and why his wife Tabitha is a hero to King fans everywhere!) Book Vs Movie (Replay) “Coraline” Neil Gaiman’s Classic Novella Vs the Henry Selick Film What would you do if your mother and father all of a sudden became entirely different (and scary) people? Coraline Jones is a young English girl who moves to an old house that is filled with interesting characters (such as Miss Spink, Miss Forcible and Mr. Bobo,) loving (yet kind of absent) parents and a bricked-up door leading to an adventure which tests the might and ingenuity of our heroine. (Spoiler--we really love this book & movie here!) Coraline, written by illustrious author Neil Gaiman, was originally published in 2002 though he had been working on it since the 1980s in honor of his daughters Holly & Maddy. In fact, he originally sent to his editor in 1991 who deemed the theme “too scary” for kids. Thankfully, Gaiman kept working on it and the novel was awarded the Hugo Award for Best Novella in 2003. (The graphic novel featuring illustrations by P. Craig Russell is a real treat as well!) Director Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas and James & the Giant Peach) helmed the 2009 film which was nominated as Best Animated Feature at the 2010 Academy Awards. A visual feast for the eyes, the movie Coraline takes the tale to a whole other level. So which did the Margos like better? Book or Movie? Check out the link below to find out! Also, we are SO lucky to have Penguin Books sponsor this episode! The Margos are thrilled to be asked to talk about author Ransom Riggs’ newest “Miss Peregrine’s story”--A Map of Days which you can pre-order now! (It goes on sale October 2, 2018.) This is the fourth novel in the series and lead character Jacob Portman’s life in the United States is the setting for this newest adventure. Be sure to pre-order your copy today! In this ep the Margos discuss : The incredible career of Neil Gaiman who is a master of short fiction, novels, comics, graphic novels, radio and movies (Whew! When does this man rest?) Key changes in the adaptation including setting it in America and the character of “Wybie Lovat.” The various forms of Coraline including the novel, graphic novel, audiobook read by the author and featuring music by The Gothic Archies. The cast of voices including Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French, John Hodgman, and Keith David. Plus, Neil Gaiman’s current plethora of projects, movie trivia and more! Book Vs Movie “The Shawshank Redemption” (Replay) The Margos Celebrate the 25th Anniversary of this Classic Film If there is one thing we can say about Book Vs Movie fans--they LOVE the Stephen King eps and cannot get enough of them. In particular, we have been getting requests for The Shawshank Redemption since we launched the show and finally had the time to get it together. The story of the bromance between Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) and Red Redding (Morgan Freeman) is considered one of the best movies of all time and has continually been on syndicated TV since its debut on the TNT network in June 1997. (Seriously, this movie is always playing on some channel somewhere!) Unjustly convicted for the murder of his wife and her lover Andy spends decades of his life fighting to clear his name while learning to adapt to life as a prisoner. It’s a story about friendship, survival, revenge, deception, agony, and redemption. Originally published as a novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption in 1982’s Different Seasons the differences between the original story and the movie are plentiful. So which did the Margos like better? Book or Movie? Check out the link below to find out! In this ep the Margos discuss : The 1982 novella from Different Seasons and how it differs from the movie How director Frank Darabont originally paid one dollar (!) to adapt King’s short story The Woman in the Room in 1983 and how after he wrote the screenplay for Nightmare On Elm Street 3--it gave him the confidence to take on this story. The incredible cast including Robbins, Freeman, Bob Gunton (Warden Norton,) William Sadler (Heywood,) Clancy Brown (Captain Hadley) Gil Bellows (Tommy,) and James Whitmore as Brooks Hatlen. Apologies for the the non-ideal audio during the interview and intermittent. A trail run to be improved going forward.
Book Vs Movie “The Shawshank Redemption” The Margos finally take on this classic Stephen King/Frank Darabont movie (you’re welcome!) Song of the Dead is Sarah Glenn Marshall’s followup to her YA hit Reign of the Fallen and will be available on Tuesday, January 29th on Kindle, hardback and on Audible. The story is the continuation of our hero Odessa who is determined to leave the borders of Karthia to mend her broken heart. She is joined on her journey with Meredy and they find a land where the Dead rule at night and dragons roam the streets. Just as they are being enchanted at the new world (and each other) growing political issues bring them back to Odessa where specters from their past haunt their tenuous relationship. As a member of the LGBT community, author Marshall is especially proud of creating an inclusive fantasy world in which race, gender, and sexuality are non-issues.
