In the final episode of this series, we bring you inside the towns of Patagonia that have a distinct Welsh falvour. From tea houses to red dragons to an adoration for the game of rugby, we travel to Trelew and Gaiman. In Buenos Aires, we sit down with Marcela Mora y Araujo to take one last look back on the 2022 World Cup triumph, and what it's done for a country that is economically on its knees. She also reveals her own story of FOMO, except it was missing out on her own nation's World Cup win, which soothes the pain of this particular story of missing out.We go to a Boca Juniors game, and we also travel to Rosario to go to a Newell's Old Boys game. It's a club that both Messi and Maradona have played for, but neither is as revered in the stadium as one Marcelo Bielsa. Before all that, there's part ten of the Patagonian hitchhiking journey, as Eoin tries to get himself to his destination of Ushuaia.Follow Eoin…https://www.instagram.com/eoinsheahan/https://x.com/EoinSheahanhttps://www.tiktok.com/@eoinsheahanEmail: eoinsheahan1@gmail.com
Just in time for the pod's 10th birthday, a bucket list guest for the show. We welcome, after two years of trying to line up schedules, Grant Morrison. When we started discussing doing the pod with Grant, it was Animal Man's 35th anniversary. It's now the 37th anniversary, but all that matters is finally having the chat. We talk about the book's creation back in 1988 during the first wave of the British Comics Invasion, when Grant, Gaiman, Milligan and McKean followed Alan Moore in working for DC. This leads to discussing the story that changed the book, issue 5's “The Coyote Gospel.” From there, it's talk about everything from B'Wanna Beast to The Red Bee, Captain Cold to The Inferior Five. That's all leading up to the Psycho Pirate, his trying to undo Crisis and the debut of characters like Overman and Sunshine Superman. And that culminates with looking at the end of Grant's time on the book, when Buddy travels through Limbo to meet … well, a fictionalized version of Grant, when gets to confront his creator about the death of his family and all the other bad stuff that has happened in these stories. There's lots of other stuff in our conversation including Swamp Thing, Sargon the Sorcerer, Doom Patrol, Batman, continuity, metafiction and of course Hypertime, where Grant explains the math behind the idea that most people didn't understand. As you may be able to tell during our chat, Animal Man was a very important book for me, it starting at the same time I was beginning college and being exposed to new ideas and writers like Borges. I'm so happy we were finally able to get this done and thanks to Grant's wife Kristan for all her help over the years trying to balance Trans-Atlantic schedules, natural disasters and various medical issues over that time. But we never gave up, so we hope you like probably one of my favorite episodes of the podcast's lifespan.

MagaMama with Kimberly Ann Johnson: Sex, Birth and Motherhood
In this episode, Kimberly Ann Johnson is joined by journalist, and fellow Jaguar, Kristin Butler to discuss the case of Amanda Palmer and Neil Gaiman: a celebrity couple who are currently both facing charges around Gaiman's ongoing sexual misconduct. Kimberly and Kristin share their own personal reactions to the case, as well as the way the reporting on the story reveals common challenges for women dealing with fallout from sexual boundary rupture, particularly fawning. They explore the complexities of boundary violations, the impact of the #BelieveSurvivors movement on men, and the psychological responses for women searching for agency and empowerment post boundary rupture. The conversation touches on the broader implications of sexual abuse, the role of social media, and the importance of Activate Your Inner Jaguar work in empowering individuals to recognize and assert their boundaries.

I have a soft spot for Wildcat, the Golden Age hero, member of the JSA, and trainer of heroes. And he has a connection to the Bat family, having trained more than one member. So this week we're reading a perfectly whacky issue of Brave and the Bold as only Bob Haney could write it, and two mini-series by Chuck Dixon that feature Bat characters teaming up with Wildcat May the Best Man Die! (The Brave and the Bold V.1 # 118) Batman/Wildcat # 1-3 Catwoman/Wildcat # 1-4 Also, we are adding a fourth story to the Big Board, as we are removing one. Due to the mounting sexual assault allegations against Neil Gaiman, it has become difficult to feature a book that he headlined at the very top of the list. While any other entry on the list that features Gaiman's work is an anthology, "Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?" Is a book that can't be discussed without Gaiman's contribution, and so it has been removed, and we are also reading "Succession" from Detective Comics V.1 Annual #4, by the wonderful and legendary Louise Simonson, so the Board remains evenly divisible by 3. Please listen to the cold open of the show for more details on our thinking. Very rarely does a culty news topic compel us to the mic as urgently as this week's subject, a nerdy literature fandom turned…collective traumatic experience? In the wake of a bombshell Vulture exposé that straight-up reads like a Sounds Like A Cult script, Reese and Amanda are unpacking the nightmarish tale of multi-bestselling-author-turned-sex-abuser-slash-cult-leader, Neil Gaiman. You know this guy's work, even if you don't recognize his name, and the cult he created has so many entry points, if you are a lover of Coraline, American Gods, The Dresden Dolls, or a variety of viral Tumblr DM reply screenshots from @neil-gaiman, there's a chance you've skirted the edge of a few of them. We, along with the rest of the online book-nerd world, were flabbergasted by the release of Lila Shapiro's article “There is No Safe Word” revealing that underneath Gaiman's seemingly wholesome dynamic with his doting fans was a campaign of lovebombing, sexual assault, and bizarre rituals, involving the author's ex-wife Amanda Palmer and a history with the freaking church of Scientology. It's truly a heartbreaking, stranger-than-fiction story. Join Amanda and Reese, as they analyze it chapter by chapter. P.S. While we for the most part try to keep things fairly lighthearted here at SLAC, this week's episode is obviously covering a genuinely dangerous individual, and therefore some very sensitive topics. This is a content warning to maybe skip this week's episode if the following are especially uncomfortable territory for you: sexual assault, emotional and verbal abuse, suicidal ideation, emotional abuse, abuse against LGBTQ+ individuals Subscribe to Sounds Like A Cult on Youtube! Neil Gaiman's career seems very DONE at the moment, after several women came out and accused him of some really nasty stuff. Now even Dark Horse Comics is severing ties with the highly influential comic book creator and author. We talk about the situation and how the comic book media seemingly turned a blind eye to him -- and others -- because they were part of the group. Neil Gaiman, a vocal advocate for cancel culture, faces allegations of sexual assault and non-consensual activity with multiple women, which he denies while admitting to being emotionally unavailable and sexually available. The comic book industry is turning on Gaiman due to the severity and mainstream media attention of the allegations, marking a significant departure from their usual damage control for problematic creators. Inconsistent enforcement of standards in the industry sees male creators like Gaiman and Warren Ellis facing severe consequences, while female creators are protected despite allegations of misconduct. The industry has a history of protecting problematic creators, including those accused of taking advantage of younger women, badgering colleagues, and facing allegations of misogyny, racism, and embezzlement. Gaiman's past behavior of smacking down critics lwas previously cheered on by the industry, now facing criticism for their selective enforcement of standards. The comic book industry's culture of protectionism and selective enforcement is driving talent away and creating a toxic environment unattractive to potential creators and readers.

⚠️ Warning: This episode gets dark. Real dark. Listen at your own risk.More than 15 women have now come forward saying that iconic fantasy writer Neil Gaiman (Coraline, The Sandman, Good Omens, American Gods) either blurred the line of consent, or directly and violently assaulted them. On Monday, New York Magazine and its website Vulture published detailed firsthand accusations from eight women. The explicit details have shocked the literary and music worlds alike, but there's now another question...did his ex-wife, popular indie musician and activist Amanda Palmer know? Was she complicit in some instances of abuse? Let's break it all down. ------------Patreon: http://www.patreon.com/wesawthedevilDiscord: https://discord.gg/X2qYXdB4Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/WeSawtheDevilInstagram: http://www.instagram.com/wesawthedevilpodcastBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/we-saw-the-devil-a-true-crime-podcast--4433638/support.

We're back! For our newest episode Pete and Dan are joined by Aparna Verna, the author of the breakout fantasy novel The Phoenix King, published by Orbit. Originally Aparna was invited onto the show to talk about Neil Gaiman's 1996 hit novel and TV show Neverwhere, but in light of the recent allegations against Gaiman, we've decided not to release that episode, though we may do so in the future as events play out.In this interview we talk to Aparna about how the Phoenix King came to be, about its evolution, its fusion of western fantasy structures and Indian mythological frameworks, and it crosses romance, adventure and fantasy to create a new angle on centuries-old storytelling conventions. We talk about Aparna's excellent social media game, one of the contributing factors to her book's success, and her successful leveraging of crowdfunding to self-publish the original novel on which The Phoenix King is based. Aparna Verma was born in Rajasthan, India, and grew up in the United States. She graduated from Stanford University with Honors in the Arts and a B.A. in English. In 2021, she self-published The Boy with Fire, which quickly went viral on TikTok, and was later republished by Orbit Books as The Phoenix King in 2023.When she is not writing, Aparna likes to lift heavy (arm days are her favorite), dance to Bollywood music, and find cozy cafes to read myths from ancient worlds. You can connect with Aparna on TikTok at @aparnawrites, and Twitter and Instagram at @spirited_gal.

Apocalypse now? This week, V and Emily start out the episode by talking about the super-cool annual convention that Good Omens fans created and host as part of The Ineffable Society: the Ineffable Con, going strong since 2019. Then, we have to delve into the allegations against Good Omens co-author and showrunner Neil Gaiman, former Tumblr everyman and (alleged) total sleazebag. Looking at the Gaiman situation through the lens of, "how are fans reacting, and how are fans treating each other's reactions?" makes us feel a little better than looking too deeply at him as a person. The episode closes out with a reminder that the fannish world moves fast -- when we put this on our calendar, it was supposed to just be a happy episode about awesome Good Omens fans, you know? Sigh. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Why the Best Writers Endure Isolation, published by Declan Molony on July 17, 2024 on LessWrong. Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, was once locked in a room for three weeks until he completed one of his books. Victor Hugo, when faced with a deadline for his book The Hunchback of Notre Dame, locked all his clothes away except for a large shawl. "Lacking any suitable clothing to go outdoors, [he] was no longer tempted to leave the house and get distracted. Staying inside and writing was his only option." Six months later, the book was published. Dozens of famous authors have done the same. Names like Virginia Woolf, Henry David Thoreau, Mark Twain - all of them constructed small writing sheds from which to work. Names like Ian Fleming, Maya Angelou, and George Orwell - the first two penned their novels while locked in hotel rooms, while Orwell isolated himself on a remote Scottish island to write. One explanation for this reclusive behavior comes from author Neil Gaiman in an interview he did with Tim Ferriss a few years ago. Ferriss mentioned Gaiman's most important rule for writing: You can sit here and write, or you can sit here and do nothing. But you can't sit here and do anything else. Gaiman, after a moment of reflection, responded by saying: I would go down to my lovely little gazebo [at the] bottom of the garden [and] sit down. I'm absolutely allowed not to do anything. I'm allowed to sit at my desk. I'm allowed to stare out at the world. I'm allowed to do anything I like, as long as it isn't anything. Not allowed to do a crossword; not allowed to read a book; not allowed to phone a friend. All I'm allowed to do is absolutely nothing or write. What I love about that is I'm giving myself permission to write or not write. But writing is actually more interesting than doing nothing after a while. You sit there and you've been staring out the window now for five minutes, and it kind of loses its charm. You [eventually think], "well actually…[I] might as well write something." Writing is hard. Between writing or doing anything else, most writers - even some of the most accomplished ones - acquiesce to distraction. That's why so many of them construct and work in environments devoid of external stimuli - the better to circumvent akrasia. I do all my writing in coffee shops. Similar to Gaiman, I allow myself to do one of two things: write, or people-watch. I don't bring anything with me except for a pencil, paper, and my research material housed in my journals. That means no phone, no laptop, and no watch (even knowing the time is a kind of distraction and pressure to perform). Within this environment, I end up writing because I've made it the path of least resistance. Thanks for listening. This month, Kyle and Erik discuss the two episodes written by acclaimed novelist/author/showrunner Neil Gaiman. Arguably the biggest guest writer ever to write for the series, Gaiman's stories---"The Doctor's Wife" from series 6 and "Nightmare in Silver" from series 7---have an interesting history, and a diametrically opposed fan reaction at the time. But are either warranted? Have they aged like wine or milk?

Dr. Dan Cassino is back to discuss Netflix's Sandman spinoff (of sorts), Dead Boy Detectives, a ghosty witchy horny procedural. We talked about its Gaiman (and Buffy) DNA, if it's better at being scary or horny, and which tools from the historical "magic on TV" kit it uses best. Later, we went Around The Dial with Hacks, This Old House, and Baby Reindeer before turning our attention to the UN-dead for a The Walking Dead Canon submission. Jason Ritter won, Peacock lost, and Game Time took us on a Roman holiday of sorts. No need to open a portal, just hit play on an all-new Extra Hot Great. GUESTS
Neil Gaiman's complete reinvention of DC's trademark on The Sandman is inarguably one of the most influential comics of the Iron Age…so why haven't we talked about it much yet? And why are we starting with the storyline that's popularly considered “Volume 2” of the series? We're focusing on the collection that introduced The Sandman to the bookshelf market (which originally included the landmark “The Sound of Her Wings” story) and marked an evolution in the comic from a horror reimagining in the vein of Alan Moore's Swamp Thing to a showcase for Gaiman's brand of dark fantasy and his love of the world of stories. We'll also touch on how the series introduced character types not seen in other comics of the time, whether it matters or not that a big part of the story hinges on plotlines from Roy Thomas' Infinity Inc., and how The Sandman went on to give birth to the Vertigo imprint.
In this episode of The Autistic Culture Podcast:Podcast hosts, Matt Lowry, LPP and Dr. Angela Lauria, discuss Neil Gaiman and his recent post identifying himself as autistic. Topics include:* Interception difficulties, etymology fun, and how left-handedness relates to autism.* Gaiman's prolific writing including: “Don't Panic: The Official Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Companion,” “Good Omens,” “Constantine,” “Coraline,” “Doom Patrol,” “Stardust,” and “Babylon 5.” * Sandman: one of the first graphic novels to reach the NYT Best Seller's List. Plus, how Neil Gaiman welcomed a whole new demographic (women) to comic books.* Amanda Palmer: Gaiman's chaotic, quirky, punk, ex-wife who might just be a high masking autistic woman.* Bonus: Neil Gaiman's surprising best friend!Episode Quotes:“He brought a newfound legitimacy to comics.” —Matt“It became very, very ethereal and created this grand mythology that was beyond what other comic writers were doing at the time and created a giant template that brought in a whole new audience.” —Matt“This issue was the first and only comic to ever win the World Fantasy Award for short fiction in 1991, before they changed the rules to make sure comics could never win it again. He broke the system to where they had to patch the hole, because he's so good.” —Matt“If you are autistic—especially as a woman—and you have been masking and scrounging to survive, often there is trauma associated with it.” —Angela“But, I think a lot of it is a trauma response of not knowing how to love her neurodivergent brain.” —AngelaAre you “Team Gaiman” or “Team Palmer”?
