In this episode, Danny Hurst is joined by Ronnie Golden, aka Tony De Meur, of the post-punk pub rock band The Fabulous Poodles. They had several hits and appeared regularly on TV and radio. The Fabulous Poodles supported many bands including The Ramones and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Later, Ronnie transitioned into stand-up, comedy, acting and song-writing. He worked with Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmondson, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders and was in The Young Ones, The Fourth Protocol and more. Later, he collaborated with comedy legends such as Arthur Smith, Rich Hall and, until his death, Barry Cryer, with whom he performed regularly as a double-act. Ronnie shares some fascinating stories about his career, the people he has worked with and his influences. He also explains how he learned maths through music and how the Comedy Store and The Comic Strip Presents… changed British comedy. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS Despite writing a lot of music Ronnie, like many other musicians, cannot read music. Ronnie learned maths through music, he explains how during the episode. Never turn down the chance to do something new. Repeatedly, Ronnie took on projects despite not having 100% of the skills required. He simply learned what he needed to know. All performers have bad days, including Bob Dylan. Ronnie shares what it was like to see Eric Clapton, Fleetwood Mac, John Lee Hooker, Jimi Hendrix and more perform in small London venues. A lot of the comedy of the 80s came out of people being sick of the Tories. In the 60s, going up west and to Denmark Street was a buzz. Today, London has become so corporate that it has lost much of its character. BEST MOMENTS “From doing comedy songs, I developed repartee, and it became a mix of stand-up and music.” “I recognised the mathematics in music, and I connected with it. 12 bar blues and that kind of stuff.” “I bought myself a harmonica, and I didn't take it out of my mouth for about a week until I learned it.” “You´ve got to trust yourself.” “That´s the way Dylan works – he likes to surprise himself.” “In the 60s, it was a complete buzz.” “I see less of places that I used to love going to and everything’s changed.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://x.com/ronniegolden1 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronnie_Golden HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. Having worked with some of the most difficult people in the UK, he is a natural storyteller and entertainer, whilst purveying the most fascinating information that you didn't know you didn't know. A writer and host of pub quizzes across London, he has travelled extensively and speaks several languages. He has been a consultant for exhibitions at the Imperial War Museum and Natural History Museum in London as well as presenting accelerated learning seminars across the UK. With a wide range of knowledge ranging from motor mechanics to opera to breeding carnivorous plants, he believes learning is the most effective when it's fun. Uniquely delivered, this is history without the boring bits, told the way only Danny Hurst can. This is an extended version of a programme first broadcast on Sunday 17 September 2023.Adrian Edmondson first shot to national fame in 1982, playing the studded punk Vyvyan in the TV sitcom The Young Ones, set in a seedy student flat. The cast largely came from the developing alternative comedy scene, and included Rik Mayall and Alexei Sayle. Adrian was born in Bradford in 1957. He spent time as a child in Cyprus, Bahrain and Uganda, following his father who worked as a teacher for the armed forces. He attended a boarding school in Yorkshire from the age of 11, where he often rebelled against its rules and restrictions, but enjoyed performing in school plays. He headed to Manchester University to study drama, where he soon met Rik Mayall. They bonded over their shared interests in comedy, double acts, violent slapstick and the plays of Samuel Beckett. It was the start of a long performing partnership and friendship, which included the anarchic TV comedy and long-running touring show Bottom and a production of Beckett's Waiting for Godot on the West End stage.Adrian has also worked widely as an actor and musician, including an acclaimed appearance as Scrooge for the RSC, and performances with the reunited Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. Adrian Edmondson first shot to national fame in 1982, playing the studded punk Vyvyan in the TV sitcom The Young Ones, set in a seedy student flat. It was the start of a long performing partnership and friendship, which included the anarchic TV comedy and long-running touring show Bottom and a production of Beckett's Waiting for Godot on the West End stage. Adrian has also worked widely as an actor and musician, including an acclaimed appearance as Scrooge for the RSC, and performances with the reunited Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. Coraline  is a dark fantasy horror children's novel by British author Neil Gaiman. Gaiman started writing Coraline in 1990, and it was published in 2002 by Bloomsbury and HarperCollins. It was awarded the 2003 Hugo Award for Best Novella, the 2003 Nebula Award for Best Novel, and the 2002 Bram Stoker Award for Best Work for Young Readers. The Guardian ranked Coraline #82 in its list of 100 Best Books of the 21st Century. It was adapted as a 2009 stop-motion animated film, directed by Henry Selick under the same name.   Coraline is a 2009 American stop-motion animated dark fantasy horror film written and directed by Henry Selick and based on Neil Gaiman's novella of the same name. Produced by Laika as the studio's first feature film, it features the voice talents of Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French, Keith David, John Hodgman, Robert Bailey Jr., and Ian McShane. The film tells the story of its titular character discovering an idealized parallel universe behind a secret door in her new home, unaware that it contains a dark and sinister secret.   Just as Gaiman was finishing his novella in 2002, he met Selick and invited him to make a film adaptation, as Gaiman was a fan of Selick's The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach. When Selick thought that a direct adaptation would lead to "maybe a 47-minute movie", the screenplay had some expansions, like the introduction of Wybie, who was not present in the original novel. Selick invited Japanese illustrator Tadahiro Uesugi to become the concept artist upon discovering his work when looking for a design away from that of most animation. His biggest influences were on the colour palette, which was muted in reality and more colourful in the Other World, similar to The Wizard of Oz. To capture stereoscopy for the 3D release, the animators shot each frame from two slightly apart camera positions. Production of the stop-motion animation feature took place at a warehouse in Hillsboro, Oregon. Bruno Coulais composed the film's musical score.   The film was theatrically released in the United States on February 6, 2009 by Focus Features after a world premiere at the Portland International Film Festival on February 5, and received critical acclaim. The film grossed $16.85 million during its opening weekend, ranking third at the box office, and by the end of its run had grossed over $124 million worldwide, making it the third highest-grossing stop-motion film of all time after Chicken Run and Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. The film won Annie Awards for Best Music in an Animated Feature Production, Best Character Design in an Animated Feature Production and Best Production Design in an Animated Feature Production and received nominations for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and a Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film. It has since developed a cult following in the years since its release.   Opening Credits; Introduction (1.20); Background History (9.33); Coraline Plot Synopsis (10.37); Book Thoughts (12.26); Let's Rate (31.40); Introducing a Film (33.14); Coraline Film Trailer (36.35); Lights, Camera, Action (38.55); How Many Stars (1:00.24); End Credits (1:02.03); Closing Credits (1:03.30)   Opening Credits– Epidemic Sound – Copyright . Thanks to a little help from comedy trio Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders and Kathy Burke (aka Lananeeneenoonoo), Bananarama's hit streak continued as their remake of The Beatles' "Help!" took them back to the UK top 3 in early 1989. Released in support of Comic Relief, the cover version was true to the song's pop roots musically, but came with added input from the satirical girl group sprinkled throughout. Like the French & Saunders sketch from Christmas 1988 that had inspired the collaboration, the jokes were incredibly pointed, with Jacquie O'Sullivan's role in the group turned into a punchline (with her blessing, it would seem). But following the success of "Help!", Bananarama hit a difficult patch, with their ongoing work with Stock Aitken Waterman unable to deliver anything they were happy with and the trio turning to producer Youth for the bulk of their 1991 album, Pop Life. We look at the troubled SAW sessions from 1988 to 1990 and discuss why fan favourite "Ain't No Cure" was a wasted opportunity, with input from Matt Aitken on the matter. Plus. we hear from Youth about Pop Life, which gave Bananarama their last UK top 30 hits as a trio.Subscribe for bonus material at chartbeats.com.au/sawTwitter: @ChartBeatsAU, @MrMattDenbyInstagram: @chartbeatsauFacebook: Chart Beats: A Journey Through PopEmail: chartbeats.au@gmail.com
