In 2002 the first Spiderman film was breaking records at the box office. Studio executives asked themselves how they could squeeze even more money from it and the answer was obvious: a stage musical. But this was no ordinary stage musical. It featured the music of U2, shared the same director as the incredibly successful Lion King stage production and would see Spiderman and the Green Goblin flying through theatres using technology that not only hadn't been invented yet, but hadn't even been tested in a tech rehearsal. What could possibly go wrong? Tens of millions of dollars and several life threatening injuries later, ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark' became the most expensive, and biggest fail, in Broadway history. Nat's What I Reckon: Death To Jar Sauce with Dani Vee and James Layton. Cooking tip, good mental health, what you need to cook from scratch and why jar sauces suck!
CONTENT WARNING: This podcast contains discussion of mental health. If you are suffering from any of the issues that have been discussed or need assistance, please contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636.Few people can claim the prolific surge in popularity that Nat, aka Nat's What I Reckon, experienced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Declaring a public and hilarious war on jar sauce after witnessing the bizarre panic buying that left fresh food untouched on supermarket shelves, while pre-made jars were bought in droves, Nat emerged as the Aussie hero us at home and all over the world needed. But diehard fans will be quick to tell you, Nat has been entertaining and expressing his hilarious take on social commentary for years now, with his YouTube channel and social media pages firmly lampooning everything from preppy boat culture to tissue boxes in the back of cars - but it was his unparalleled knack for fusing profanity, genuine advice and kick ass delicious meals that set his star even further on the rise, going on to claim Dave Grohl as a fan and firmly embraced as the true champion of the people. As if this hilarious human wasn't generous enough with his recipes and sharing his partner Jules's infectious laugh with the world, Nat's also a mental health ambassador, a musician and honestly one of the nicest humans you could ever cross paths with. With 2021 drawing to a close, Nat's now ticked off yet another milestone, with his second book Death To Jar Sauce: Rad Recipes For Champions officially out this week - and to celebrate, he swung by the Green Room to chat about his natural career progression, positive mental health practices and Colgate beef lasagne. We're back for round 2 with Nat's What I Reckon. I caught up with Nat almost a year ago (episode 111) and thought it would be fun to see what he has been up to this year since we last spoke. In 2018, Nat has taken his comedic video commentary to the next level. With a butt tonne of videos put out this year, there are now more 11 million views on Facebook alone. Before he knows it, he'll be a cultural icon and have his own pin ups in the back of TV Week (does that still exist?). Without Nat shining a light on many of life's oddities, I would have never taken notice of tissue boxes resting near the back windshields of a stupid amount of Toyota Camrys or wonder how utterly ridiculous a home display centre truly is. I even look at Jim Beam fondly these days (shock horror), as a symbol of newly acquainted friendships rather than a simple rough as guts bottle of bourbon. It's amazing how much of the absurd consumes our day to day existence without ever taking any notice or just accepting things they way that they are. Luckily we have Nat pointing out the ludicrous and taking the piss out of it for our enjoyment. Have a squiz at some of Nat's videos in the show notes and give him a follow on social media. Good on ya champ! Nat's videos on Facebook alone have totalled nearly 5 million views to date.
