When I open my phone, it explodes in a cascade of fear, fury and furphies. That content does exactly what it is designed to do—leave me spinning in a tizz of powerlessness and desperation. Besides just turning my phone off, I think I have found something that makes that feeling less intense, and instead gives me the feeling that I am actually doing something that will make a difference. Today is January 26th. If you’ve listened to the show for a while you’ll probably have an idea about where I view the significance of this day. If there’s one thing I wish for 2026, it’s that two things can be true at the same time. It is vitally important to celebrate a national identity, the story which binds us together as a community. The current day we’re celebrating this concept causes a great deal of pain to a significant number of people in our country. I’m not putting forward at all that we sholdn’t celebrate who we are as a nation, far from it - i think it’s incredibly important to be proud of who we are, what we’ve become and also to recognise where we’ve come from. We can do that in a way which unites us. The current way we’re going about it doesn’t really do the job. What kind of community do we want? A community divided along ideological lines so stark that we may as well be separate communities? Or a community united by values which we consider at the core of our national identity, and those ideological lines branch from there, as a way to put those values into action in our daily lives? For context, today we’re revisiting one of my favourite people in the world - the incredible Stan Grant. Steven Pinker is a cognitive scientist, bestselling author, and one of the most influential thinkers of our time. His latest book unpacks the concept of 'common knowledge', and how it impacts our social, political, and economic lives. Steven argues that this invisible layer of shared understanding holds societies together. But it can also work in reverse by reinforcing inherent biases as more people silo themselves inside echo chambers. This is a fascinating conversation with a brilliant man, and you can see Steven live in Australia in February. How do you turn life's toughest blows into your greatest source of motivation? After a life-altering brain haemorrhage, Dan MacQueen shares his remarkable story of recovery and reinvention. He speaks candidly about relearning to walk, talk and smile, and the unwavering support of friends, family and self-care that help rebuild his life. Now, as a keynote speaker, Dan encourages others to reframe challenges, lead with compassion and commit to meaningful personal development. Favouring meaningful impact versus traditional metrics, Dan's journey stands as a powerful reminder of perseverance and optimism. When it comes to navigating change and building resilience, Dan's focus remains clear: be better than yesterday. KEY TAKEAWAY 'Better than yesterday is something I really strive myself to abide by and live by. That's what I can pass along–just approach life in that better than yesterday kind of vibe.' BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS The Jack Reacher series by Lee Child. ABOUT THE GUEST – DAN MACQUEEN At 28, Dan was leading a healthy, active life. After an optometrist appointment to identify the cause of his persistent headaches was cut short, he was handed a sealed envelope and told to go directly to the hospital. What followed was emergency brain surgery. On June 21, 2014, Dan's reality was shattered by a devastating brain hemorrhage. With no map to guide him on the gruelling path to recovery, Dan had to rely on his grit, perseverance, and resilience to relearn everything he once knew: how to walk, talk and even smile. Dan has survived two emergency brain surgeries, weeks in a coma, and months in a rehab hospital. What he found out along the way might surprise you: there is nothing like a brain injury to refocus the mind! Have you ever felt completely stuck? Overwhelmed by hopelessness, frustration, or the feeling that life isn't playing fair? In this episode of Healthy Her, host Amelia Phillips sits down with Osher Günsberg, who has faced those very moments, often under the intense scrutiny of the public eye, yet chosen to share his journey publicly with honesty, vulnerability, and courage. Osher’s story is about so much more than celebrity; it’s about resilience, reinvention, and learning how to move forward even after hitting rock bottom. He opens up about his journey to sobriety, navigating public life, and finding ways to get unstuck when life feels impossible. He speaks about his brand new book about getting unstuck 'So What? Now What?', and the deeper reason behind writing it. It's a raw and honest conversation, perfect for anyone who feels ready to get unstuck. About the guest: Osher Günsberg first entered the public sphere as radio host Andrew G in 1994 in Brisbane, before moving on to national programs like Take 40 Australia and The Hot Hits Live from LA. He became a household name on television hosting Channel V, and his breakout role came with Australian Idol, where his warmth and energy made even the toughest eliminations more bearable. Today, Osher is best known as the long-time host of The Bachelor Australia franchise, and a familiar face on shows such as Masked Singer and, most recently, Dancing With the Stars. Beyond television, he has shared his personal journey through his podcast Better Than Yesterday, his memoir Back, After the Break, and his latest book, So What Now What? — a compassionate guide for anyone feeling stuck and looking for ways to move forward. Think for a moment, what would happen if you had a dream career, pilot, engineer, drummer - and your family absolutely did not back you in what you were trying to achieve. You're a teenager. They have your best interests at heart, they love you and just want success for you, but you might have other ideas. Would you try anyway? That's pretty much what happened with Ada Nicodemou. After seeing a poster for a lost cat, Osher wanted to talk about what it means to be a cat owner. As a former owner of two furry, purry executioners, he was shocked at recent research out of ANU which shows that the scale of devastation that domestic, cute, furry pet cats are having on native wildlife is absolutely catastrophic. (Not even sorry for that pun)This is absolutely not a rant against cats. What did you think of this episode?Leave a comment on insta @osher_gunsbergGet tickets to Osher's Live gigs at MICF https://bit.ly/ntnnnnn24Get on the mailing list https://bit.ly/oglinktreeGot suggestions for Better Than Yesterday? Do you talk to yourself harshly? Did you know it's as threatening as if someone else talked to you that way? Parenting expert Gen Muir is my guest today, in an episode packed with tools and techniques to help you (and me) not be so hard about potentially ruining the life of these kids we love so much. Her new book Little People, Big Feelings is an insight into not just powerful, research based tools and techniques - but a real-life reflection that this powerhouse Mum of four boys uses every day with her own family. The great news - apparently we only need to get it right 30% of the time to get an A in parenting. I wish highschool had those pass marks! We cover a lot - the role of self-compassion in parenting and the challenges of step-parenting, the importance of building strong relationships with children and creating a nurturing and supportive environment, self compassion around your own journey as a parent and - a vital discussion about choosing the right vehicle for your family. Enjoy the show. MICF shows on sale now Tickets at oshergunsberg.comhttps://www.comedyfestival.com.au/2024/shows/osher-guensberg-ntnnnnGot suggestions for Better Than Yesterday? MELISSA ETHERIDGE is my guest this week. Yes, THE Melissa Etheridge. She's touring once again, kicking off in Perth in May, then heading east stopping all stations, Adelaide, Melbourne, Gold Coast and Sydney (which is already sold out). She's bringing some family with her as you're about to hear she is very very excited about it. If this is your first time hearing about this remarkable woman, let me bring you up to speed. Melissa Etheridge is a Grammy winning, Oscar winning singer/songwriter superstar. For over 30 years her distinctive voice has told stories of love, passion and heartache. She's publicly lived through challenges that most people experience in private - her journey of coming out, a cancer diagnosis, hair loss from the chemo, and recently the absolutely tragic loss of her son Beckett who passed away from an opioid overdose at just 21. Yeah, heads up - we talk about that, and I end up crying in this chat. Melissa, however, has used her grief to explore ways of treating addiction by supporting world-first research into the use of plant medicines previously associated with sacred ceremony and how they might be able to save lives so affected by addiction.MICF shows on sale now Tickets at oshergunsberg.comhttps://www.comedyfestival.com.au/2024/shows/osher-guensberg-ntnnnnGot suggestions for Better Than Yesterday? Today we're talking to SHARON CALLISTER - she's the CEO of Mission Australia. Sharon is one of these rare humans that's just born to help. Can't stop her, won't stop her. Among the things she's focusing on - is addressing the grim challenge of rising homelessness among women in Australia. You might be confronted by some of the misconceptions about homelessness in Australia. Sharon shares some pretty intense stories of people she's worked with who have experienced homelessness and the challenges they face. Helping an individual is important, however it's treating a symptom not a cause, so Sharon has a lot to say about the need for investment in social and affordable housing and the power of early intervention. We do talk about domestic and family violence and the role of education in changing attitudes and behaviours. I know it sounds grim - but I promise you this is a conversation full of hope. Enjoy this chat with Sharon Callister. MICF shows on sale now Tickets at oshergunsberg.comhttps://www.comedyfestival.com.au/2024/shows/osher-guensberg-ntnnnnGot suggestions for Better Than Yesterday? Taryn Brumfitt is here, she's the 2023 Australian of the Year. Leader of the @bodyimagemovement, an Adelaide-based organisation that teaches people to love and appreciate their bodies. She has made two brilliant films, Embrace and Embrace Kids - the first film explores the serious issue of women's body loathing and Taryn's path to body acceptance, her second film Embrace Kids has a message for nine- to 14-year-olds to move, nourish, respect and appreciate what their bodies can do. She's a four-time bestselling author, two-time marathon runner, lover of life and people, and mum to four children, Taryn is absolutely marvellous. We cover a lot in this conversation. Self Talk, Body Image, Self Acceptance and the problem with comparison. We also pick apart the tricky business of dating in middle age, and realising that someone new is going to see you naked. It's fantastic. Enjoy the show. MICF shows on sale now Tickets at oshergunsberg.comhttps://www.comedyfestival.com.au/2024/shows/osher-guensberg-ntnnnnGot suggestions for Better Than Yesterday?
