So does the Little League team fire back up next year or are they suited up for the game this weekend? Maximum Overdrive is one of those movies that feels like two completely different films stitched together. Half the time it's practically a comedy, gleefully embracing the absurdity of its premise as every machine on Earth suddenly decides humans have to go. An angry arcade cabinet zapping Giancarlo Esposito, a Little League kid getting flattened by a steamroller, and the gloriously smug Green Goblin-faced truck all suggest everyone involved knows how ridiculous this is and is having a blast. Then the movie abruptly shifts gears and tries to become a slow-burn, Romero-esque siege horror. The survivors barricade themselves inside a truck stop while the machines patiently surround them, waiting for starvation to do the work. It's a respectable idea on paper, but the film never earns the tension because the premise is simply too goofy to sustain that level of seriousness. Every attempt at suspense is undercut by the fact that the villains are semi-trucks and lawnmowers. That tonal tug-of-war is what ultimately holds Maximum Overdrive back. When it's leaning into its B-movie insanity, it's a delight filled with memorable kills, quotable dialogue, and AC/DC blasting over every chase scene. When it tries to elevate itself into genuine horror, the pacing slows to a crawl and the cracks in the screenplay become impossible to ignore. Emilio Estevez and the cast do what they can, but they're trapped between parody and earnest horror. Even so, there's an undeniable charm to the whole experience. Stephen King's only directing effort is messy, overlong, and often nonsensical, but it's rarely boring. The practical effects, explosive action, and commitment to such a ludicrous concept make it an easy recommendation for fans of cheesy creature features and killer-object movies. It just never quite figures out what kind of movie it wants to be.

Because apparently, someone looked at one of the most beloved comic runs of the 2000s and thought, “You know what this needs? A brawler where Spidey spends most of his time frantically hammering the same three buttons while dodging increasingly ridiculous villain attacks.” Released across Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS, this wasn't your typical web-slinging adventure—it was more like someone distilled all of Ultimate Spider-Man's most explosive moments into a side-scrolling arcade experience where the city itself becomes just as much of an enemy as Green Goblin ever was. With a roster of villains pulled straight from the comics and more “beat stuff up” objectives than you can shake a web at, this game proved that sometimes the best way to honor a beloved comic series is to completely reinvent what it means to be Spider-Man. This week, we're absolutely thrilled to welcome the phenomenally knowledgeable Jarrett Tyree from Has To Do With Spider-Man I Think, who brings an encyclopedic understanding of all things Arachnid and animated to help us untangle whether this game managed to capture the kinetic energy of Bendis's run or if it just left our webbing all tangled in the wrong places. Peter and Bobby go on a double date to a comic book-themed dance where everybody's dressed up as Marvel heroes and heroines, which results in the most confusing possible introduction of Firestar, who's dressed as Spider-Woman and doesn't start using her actual powers until almost halfway through the episode. "The Triumph of the Green Goblin" is extra fun to watch for The Mutant Ages purposes because it's legitimately hard to tell whether Iceman or the Green Goblin is the more queer-coded character. Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends (1981) was not created during a time period when Bobby Drake was canonically gay, but watching "The Origin of Iceman" sure has Maddy and Ryan wondering about that. Thanks to the return of Video-Man (who has his own origin episode earlier in this series), Bobby Drake loses his mutant powers. Under the pretext of researching why this could have happened, Peter Parker straps Bobby into the university lab's memory machine, which allows Angelica and Peter to watch all of Bobby's embarrassing high school social gaffes on a big-screen TV. We soon learn Bobby would rather create a blizzard than dance with a girl, and even now, he can't manage to sit next to a girl on a couch. Also, this episode has some all-time great J. Jonah Jameson comedy in it, so we're excited to see him as a recurring fixture on this show.
