STEMMEN UIT HET GRAF 05 - WARE MISDAADHet is nacht in Gizeh. Nathan Baesel Interview – Behind the Mask II: The Return of Leslie Vernon, Crypticon 2026

The Scariest Things

As soon as I arrived at Crypticon Seattle, I made a beeline to the celebrity meet and greet room, knowing that Nathan Baesel was going to be in attendance. This event is the flagship horror community gathering in the Pacific Northwest. I didn’t know whether I’d get the chance to interview the actor who played one of my all-time favorite slasher villains, Leslie Vernon. The lines for these meet-and-greets can get long, and I might not have enough time for an interview. This day, luck was on my side. It’s the twenty-year anniversary of the cult classic meta-slasher film Behind the Mask: The Legend of Leslie Vernon. Not only did I get the opportunity, but I also discovered that The Scariest Things could do our part to help evangelize by getting the word out about the just-announced sequel, Behind The Mask II: The Return of Leslie Vernon. For those of you unfamiliar with the movie, it is one of the great meta-horror movies in the slasher genre. It stands side by side with Scream, The Final Girls, and Wes Craven’s New Nightmare as a gold standard of meta-horror. Like those peer films, it uses wit and familiarity with slasher film tropes. It winks and nudges, and then gets SERIOUS. The movie also emerged at the dawn of the found-footage horror film. It uses the verisimilitude of the documentary crew following the actions of a serial killer, convinced that by playing to Leslie’s ego, the film crew was immune from his depradations. They couldn’t have been more wrong. And yet, he let them in on all his secrets. It’s an absolute must-watch for fans of knife-wielding maniac movies. For more insight on Leslie Vernon, The Scariest Things previously discussed this film in podcast Episodes 199: Mockumentaries and 130: Masked Killers. The Big Announcement: Time has been kind to Nathan, as he has kept up with his cardio… an important factor for a hard-working serial killer. He is all set to put the mask back on. Now it’s time to get the band back together. Scott Glosserman returns to direct the film, and David Stieve is back to write the screenplay. Nathan will be joined by our final girl, Angela Goethals (Taylor Gentry), returning to do battle with Leslie. The legendary Robert Englund (Doc Halloran) is back to train her. The closing moments of the first movie suggested that a good serial killer is hard to kill. It just took 20 years to get him back on screen! Click here for the movie’s Kickstarter Campaign. It is being scheduled for release in 2027. There are some awesome exclusive add-ons, including a replica Leslie Vernon Mask, a trip to the shoot, a scythe prop, advance cast and crew screenings (That means if you wanted to meet Robert Englund… here’s your chance!), and all the way up to getting a chance to be killed on screen by Leslie in the movie! I mean, come on… how cool is that? They’ve already unlocked a couple of the stretch goals. The next big one ($300,000) is for a new horror icon cameo. Such is the joy of Kickstarter! From my perspective, I’m really hoping they hit the “More Shooting Time” Stretch goal ($500,000). That can mean the world to production quality. Do it! Contribute! The power of the Scariest Things compels you! C’mon, you know you want a T-shirt. It’s for a good horror cause. The Interview with Nathan Baesel: As noted before, I got lucky. Nathan had a free moment, and he was very generous with his time. Needless to say, I got a huge kick out of this chat. Check out my interview with him in this player link: A Message Straight from Nathan: In addition to the interview, he was eager to make a Kickstarter pitch.

Inept cops! A hotdog-shaped hotdog store! A bizarre and touchy acting class/therapy session! Troy McClure's weird Chemosphere house from The Simpsons! An insane Frankie Goes To Hollywood music video in the middle of the movie! Hide and seek-related trauma! A claustrophobic sardine who can't scream! A platinum blonde 80s vampire! Motion sickness-inducing bed drinking! A blatantly labeled door! Cultural insensitivity! A dizzying and confusing makeout session! A disturbing drill with a surprisingly short power cord! The Gone with the Wind of adult films!  A random Nostromo hat from Alien! R-rated end credits! Rear projection and matte paintings! Great cinematography and camerawork, including several split diopter shots! An excellent musical score from Pino Donaggio! A fun cast that includes Dennis Franz, Barbara Crampton in her first role, Craig Wasson being convincingly pervy, and a fearless Melanie Griffith! All that and more in this unapologetically 80s thriller that explores the seedy underbelly of Hollywood, and may be the pinnacle of HitchSchlock! On this week's episode, we honor one of the greatest comedic minds ever to grace the silver screen. Catherine O'Hara. In particular, we explore her wildly impressive improvisational collaborations with Christopher Guest. These films highlight some of the most impressive elements of O'Hara's talents: her improv skills, her dramatic range, her world-building, and her overall magnetic star power. We start with the small-town mockumentary Waiting for Guffman, where O'Hara plays Sheila Albertson, a travel agent with big dreams of Broadway stages and Hollywood lights. Next, O'Hara plays Cookie Fleck in the iconic mockumentary about the highly competitive and cut-throat world of dog shows in Best In Show. Finally, Catherine O'Hara plays Marilyn Hack, a struggling actor looking to climb her way back up the ladder in the biting industry satire, For Your Consideration. Let us know what you think of these films and what is your favorite Catherine O'Hara performance ever?❗️SEND US A TEXT MESSAGE ❗️Support the showSign up for our Patreon for exclusive Bonus Content.Follow the podcast on Instagram @gimmethreepodcastYou can  keep up with Bella on Instagram @portraitofacinephile or Letterboxd You can keep up with Nick: on Instagram @nicholasybarra, on Twitter (X) @nicholaspybarra, or on LetterboxdShout out to contributor and producer Sonja Mereu. In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and returning guest Bill Mueller discuss 2003's awkward attempt to recapture the magic of the surprisingly successful first movie, 2 Fast 2 Furious! An incredible title! Those silly visor hats! Pepsi and NOS product placement! Trying to pick up girls during a dangerous undercover mission! A Sound Designer-approved audio mix! Loud, somewhat gaudy visuals thanks to that clumsy early thousands aesthetic! A possible influence on the Wachowskis' Speed Racer movie! A larger budget but a less tangible story with somehow even cringier lines! A third act you'll barely remember! The introduction of characters who would go on to be staples of the series! John Singleton trying his hand at directing a silly blockbuster! Race obstacles that would lead to expensive automotive repairs! A great car jump stunt that's wasted due to poor editing and unnecessary visual effects! A cast that includes a returning Paul Walker, James Remar, Eva Mendes, a pre-Yellowstone Cole Hauser, Mark Boone Junior, Devon Aoki, Ludacris, and Tyrese Gibson starting out as somewhat of a Dom Toretto wannabe before finding his character as the movie goes on! The entry of the series with possibly the least sense of "family," you never realized you could miss Vin Diesel so much! Poet, playwright and curator Inua Ellams and film critic Hanna Flint join Tom Sutcliffe for this week's reviews. Riding high after the huge success of the Wicked films, actor Cynthia Erivo returns to the London stage for a one-woman production of Bram Stoker's Dracula, in which she plays all the parts. Last summer was dubbed 'brat summer' by the press, with the word 'brat' entering the dictionary as an adjective - all in response to the pop album Brat by singer Charli XCX. In a new mockumentary, The Moment, Charli considers how to follow up on Brat, and how to deal with fame. And Kleber Mendonça Filho's new film The Secret Agent follows a man caught in the turmoil of the Brazilian military dictatorship. With four Oscar nominations and two BAFTA nominations, it's widely tipped to be one of the big winners in this year's awards season. Plus authors Hallie Rubenhold and Jason Sanford tell Tom about a new and troubling marketing scam aimed at authors which promise good reviews and then resort to threats when authors do not respond.Producer: Tim Bano

Hoffman delights with his New Jersey quest for the best cottage cheese in the world -- Israeli -- much to the utter scorn of Borschel-Dan before turning to his scathing review of the new Amazon "documentary" charting the life of First Lady Melania Trump prior to the inauguration. We hear a theory that producer Melania Trump attempted to recapture the Eastern European propaganda look of her youth in the MAGA vehicle probing her napkin choices and Hoffman rates her success. In the same genre of mockumentary, we take a new look at the masterful 1983 "Zelig" by Woody Allen. Check out the one "oy" and one "not baaaaad" film (our highest mark) in this week's The Reel Schmooze. The Reel Schmooze is produced by Ari Schlacht and can be found wherever you get your podcasts. In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and returning guest Matt Naughton discuss Pamela Anderson's somewhat infamous adaptation of the Dark Horse Comics anti-hero, Barb Wire!Heroic partial nudity! Conveniently-placed bubbles! Near-lethal stilettos! Great hero shots and abundant aura farming! Awkward and inconsistent narration! Disturbing cybernetic bikini torture! A blowgun disguised as a cigarette! A motorcycle with missiles! A club full of goths and gangsters! Several discussions about contact lenses! Shocking mockery of the obese and the blind community! Possibly the strangest Casablanca remake you've ever seen! Surprisingly decent stunts and chase scenes, including a climactic aerial battle! An interesting cast that includes Udo Kier in a silly wig, Lifeforce's Steve Railsback, Temuera Morrison, Xander Berkeley, Jack Noseworthy, Clint Howard, Tommy "Tiny" Lister Jr., Victoria Rowell from Dumb & Dumber, and a committed Pamela Anderson as a slightly hotter Snake Plissken/Tom Cody-style hero doing spin kicks and shooting guns in black leather and high heels! A pulpy example of pure 90s sleaze that was merely a better script away from being a camp classic! In addition, Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on Tron: Ares, Matt Damon & Ben Affleck's new crime thriller The Rip, the new Knives Out sequel Wake Up Dead Man, the dog-centric horror movie Good Boy, and some of his favorite recent action/martial arts movies: Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In, Ghost Killer, Bad City, and Baby Assassins 3!You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Jenn was obsessed with the Netflix “Cheer” documentary upon which “Stumble” is based, and she had been a JV cheerleader herself back in the day. Ben and Rob turn it up to eleven with ‘This Is Spinal Tap', Rob Reiner's 1984 mockumentary that permanently rewired comedy, metal, and how musicians see themselves. Starring Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer, This Is Spinal Tap follows England's loudest and least self aware heavy metal band as they tour America, argue about amps, lose drummers at an alarming rate and accidentally create one of the most influential films of all time. How did Rob Reiner and Christopher Guest invent an entirely new comedic language; why is metal as a genre uniquely perfect for satire; and how did This Is Spinal Tap go on to influence everything from The Office to modern mockumentary storytelling? How many real musicians see themselves uncomfortably reflected in this film; why do Ben and Rob have their own deeply Spinal Tap style music industry war stories; and what does This Is Spinal Tap really mean about ego, creativity and the absurdity of chasing greatness?
